In this study, static pile load tests for instrumented drilled shaft pile and instrumented driven steel pipe pile were performed. Based on the results of pile load test, skin friction of each stratum was compared. Skin friction of drilled shaft were more than those of driven pile at the same settlement. This was based on the difference of surface roughness of piles and pile construction methods.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the settlement characteristics of large drilled shafts embedded into bed rocks. To perform this research, 35 pile load test results for the large drilled shafts are used, because these deep foundations generally used as substructure systems for grand bridges. In case of the yield load can not be easily determined by load(P)-settlement(S) curve from the pile load test at the maximum loads, the standard settlements which can determine a yield load is established. The residual settlement equation of pile embedded in gneiss and igneous rocks is presented in this study. Also a equation is proposed to characterize the relationship between loads and elastic settlements in pile load tests on the large drilled shaft embedded into bedrock. Then, large drilled shaft's settlement characteristics are examined on pile length, pile diameter and pile's socked depth into rock at the pile tip.

Recently construction activities increase in reclaimed onshore areas. It is therefore considered an important factor for the design of pile foundation with problems in terms of settlements due to soft grounds. Nevertheless the design of piles for negative skin friction(or downdrag forces) is probably poorly understood by many engineers. It is mainly because the most of design specification give a way to design pile foundation in bearing capacity aspect although the negative skin friction is related to settlement(downdrag). Under LRFD(load resistance factor design) approach it is to separately consider ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. This paper discusses LRFD approach to the design of piles for negative skin friction and compares this approach to traditional design approach. And also a case history is analyzed in that point of view.

Modeling techniques of piled pier were reviewed and the influences of pile cap's boundary conditions were analyzed in this study. Among various modeling techniques, equivalent cantilever method seems relatively simple for modeling pile groups and it has some problems to determine the virtual fixed points. Through the analyses, it was found that the method of nonlinear p-y model with soil springs was more appropriate than equivalent cantilever method. The method modeling a pile group using stiffness matrix seems useful for practical design, which can represent the nonlinear three-dimensional behavior of a piled pier. In this study, the stiffness matrix of a pile group could be estimated efficiently and precisely using three-dimensional nonlinear analysis programs of pile groups (FBPier 3.0, YSGroup).

Impact-echo test, a kind of simple and economical method to evaluate the integrity of drilled piles has some limitations to use because the stress wave can be generated only on the head of a pile and the wave propagation in the pile with surrounding soils are very complicated. Numerical analyses and model tests in the laboratory have shown that both the ratio of length to diameter of a pile and the stiffness ratio of pile to soil have influence on the resolution of testing results. Full scale testing piles which have artificial defects were used to verify the capability of impact-echo technique as a tool for the pile integrity evaluation. Behaviour of the reflected signal of stress wave was investigated according to the type of defects. Elastic modulus of the pile was calculated using the wave velocity in the pile and the unconfined strength of concrete specimen. Influences of the stiffness difference between the pile and the ground on the characteristics of a wave signal were also examined.

A small scale impact apparatus, pressuremter and soil chamber were used to investigate horizontal behavior and bearing capacity of the steel guardrail post installed in compacted soil. A useful test and data reduction method for pressuremter was developed to evaluate soil parameters of surrounding soil and stability of the post. From the analyses of the PMT, horizontal bearing capacity of the post impacted by a boggie was 12.7% bigger than that of the post with static loading. The increased horizontal bearing capacity is due to generated inertia force that is dependent on the shape of failed soil wedge around the post. P-y curves were obtained from the pressuremeter test and were applied to a finite difference program which predicted a load-deflection and a bending moment contours along the post.

The negative skin friction on piles, which are installed in currently consolidating soft deposits, creates significant problems on the stability of pile foundations. This study investigated whether or not the pile foundation designs were appropriate in soft deposits with large amount of consolidation settlement. The final settlements of the grounds along the pile depth were estimated by the soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests and by the field-measured settlement curves, if they were available. The displacement of the piles along the pile depth was estimated by both the load transfer method and the numerical method. Both methods gave similar locations of neutral points and magnitudes of the maximum axial forces. The movements of the ground and the piles were compared to calculate the down drag acting on piles. For the piles whose bearing capacities were less than the design loads including the down drag, slip layer coatings and/or incrementing of the penetration depth into the bearing stratum were proposed to improve the piles capacities.

Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.

In this study, the large scale model tests were executed to estimate the Load Sharing Ratio(LSR) of raft in a piled footing under various conditions. The conditions such as the subsoil type, pile length, pile spacing, array type and pile installation method etc. were varied in the pile loading tests about the free-standing group piles and a piled footing. As the results of this study, it was found that there were no differences of the load-settlement curves, along with the pile installation method and subsoil type. The piles supported most of the external load until a yielding load of the piled footing, but the raft supported a considerable load after a yielding load. And it was also found that the LSR didn't be affected by the pile installation method and the subsoil type. As the relative density of sands increased, the LSR decreased. As the pile spacing was wider and the pile length increased, there was a tendancy for the LSR to increase.

More than 100 bridges have been annually collapsed or seriously damaged by scouring in Korea. It is extremely hard to understand the complicated scour mechanism and estimate the scour depth with accuracy in fields, however since scouring is a very complex manifestation of sediment transport unable to describe with a simple mathematical tool. In order to obtain the reasonable solution to bridge scouring, therefore, the interdisciplinary co-operation is strongly recommended. In this study the special task force team for the scour problems around Incheon 2nd bridge piers is made, in which all kinds of scour oriented researches such as oceangraphic survey, hydraulic model test, numerical simulation, scour rate test, real-time scour monitoring, etc will be carried out. This paper provides this interdisciplinary procedure in details. -
In soft grounds with deep bearing stratum, the PHC piles are generally joined by welding or prefabricated method. However, the existing joining methods have some problems in a side view of workability, quality and cost etc. In this study, a new joining method of PHC piles, which removes the problems of the existing methods, is developed. Static and dynamic load tests in fields as well as laboratory tests such as tensile and bending tests are conducted to investigate the workability and structural safety of PHC piles joined by the new method. The test results show that tensile and bending resistances of the joint part are higher than those of PHC pile itself. PHC piles with 400mm diameter are joined by the new method within 4 minutes while 25 minutes for welding method. Bearing capacities of the PHC piles joined by the new method are nearly the same as those of jointed PHC piles by welding method.

Preliminary pile load tests for the design of large diameter drilled shaft were performed on two of reduced scale(D=1370mm) test piles. The maximum loads of 2350 tonf in each direction were applied using bi-directional hydraulic jacks(Osterberg Cell) at toe. Neither of the test piles yielded in terms of skin friction and end bearing. Comparisons of the test results with several methods that estimate pile capacity show that the method of Horvath and Kenney(1979) for skin friction and Zhang and Einstein(1998) for end bearing were most appropriate for the site. The test results were directly applied to pile design in case RQD of skin and toe was larger than that of the test pile. It is desirable, therefore, to consider not only unconfined compression strength but also rock mass properties(i.e. TCR, RQD) for skin friction and end bearing evaluation in the future.

본 연구에서는 케이싱을 영구부재로 사용함으로써 기존의 현장타설말뚝과 비교하여 시공 성,품질균일성,경제성, 내구성 등을 검토한다. 연구결과 케이싱을 영구부재로 사용하는 경우, 케이싱의 재사용을 위한 인발작업이 불필요하게 되고,말뚝길이전체에 대하여 케이싱을 사용한다면 R.C.D공법에 서 적용하는 슬러리공벽보호공정이 불필요하므로 시공성이 향상되는 것으로 판단된다. 케이싱을 영구부 재로 사용하는 현장타설말뚝의 지지력은 일반 깊은 기초의 지지력을 산정하는 방법과 동일하게 구해질 수 있다. 대구경의 영구케이싱이 있는 현장타설말뚝을 시공한다면 공내에 간단한 장비와 인력을 투입해서 선단부를 그라우팅방법 등으로 강화시킴으로써 선단지지력을 효과적으로 증대시킬 수 있을 것이다. 또한 케이싱 내부로부터 미리제작한 구멍을 통하여 그라우팅, 전단키(shear key) 등을 주입 또는 압입 함으로써 주면마찰력도 크게 향상될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Road is built continuously along with development of industry and cut slope is happened necessarily in road construction. Geoengineers are executing cut slope stability analysis considering various cut slope condition such as topography, geology, hydraulic condition and so on. The Tertiary Jungja Basin is located in the southeastern coastal area of the Korea Peninsula. Jungja Basin area is created by geotectonic movement of the plate after Early Miocene epoch. The northwestern and southwestern boundary of the basin is fault zone. The Basement rock is hornfels (Ulsan Formation). Basin-fills consist of extrusive volcanic rock(Tangsa Andesites), unconsolidated fluviatile conglomerate(Kangdong Formation) and shallow brackish-water sandstone(Sinhyun Formation). The characteristics of cut slopes in this area is different with cut slopes in the other site. Soil layers in this area is unconsolidated sediments and is not formed the weathering and erosion of the rock. So, the depth of soil layer is very thick. Faults of this area are northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest direction. Expandible clay mineral as smectite, chlorite et al. detected from fault gouge using XRD. Therefore, Jungja Basin area must consider the characteristics of the faults and soil layers thickness necessarily cut slopes stability analysis.

Soil nailing system can be mentioned to a method of supporting as the shear strength of in-situ soils is increased by passive inclusions. In the general soil nailing system, facing walls are used in two kind of a lattice concrete block or a cast in placed concrete wall. A case of lattice concrete blocks is used in slow slopes greater than 1:0.7. Also, a case of a cast in placed concrete wall is used in steep slopes less than 1:0.5. The cast in placed concrete walls are constructed to 30cm thick together with a shotcrete facing. In this study, the assembling soil nailing method as a new soil nailing system is proposed. This method is constructed assembly using precast concrete panels. Therefore ability of the construction and quality of the facings can be modified than a usual soil nailing system. Also, this method can be obtained the effects that a global slope stability increase, as precast concrete panels is put on cutting face after excavating a slope.

This paper introduces a method of predicting the behavior of compacted soil with an unsaturated soil mechanics by considering the effect of suction as an increasing consolidation yield stress. Two kinds of experiments were conducted. One is a series of static compaction tests to monitor the suction, and the other is a series of compression tests on compacted soil without soaking. The results of our tests indicate that it is possible to derive the distribution of suction on compaction curves and to hypothesize the changes in void ratio in the compression tests that depends on the suction. In addition, a new method is proposed to estimate the consolidation yield stress of compacted soil with a simple chart including compaction curves.

The deterministic analysis method has generally used to evaluate the slope stability and it evaluates the slope stability with decision value that is a representative value of design variables. However, one of disadvantages in the deterministic approach is there is not able to consider the uncertainty of soil strength properties, even though it is the biggest influential parameter of the slope stability. On the other hand, the limit state design(LSD) can take a consideration of uncertainties and computes both the reliability index and the probability of failure. LSD method is capable of overcoming the disadvantages of deterministic method and evaluating the slope stability more reliably. In this study, both the mean value and standard deviation of the internal land's representative soil strength properties applied to process the LSD method. The major purpose of this study is to gauge the general applicability of the limit state design in soil slope and to weigh the comparative validity of the proposed partial safety factor. In order to reach the aim of this study, the partial safety factor and resistance factor which totally satisfied the slope's overall safety factor were calculated by the load and resistance safety factor design (LRFD).

Long-term Behaviour Characteristics of Pressurized Grouting Soil Nails from the Field Pull-Out TestsRecently a pressurized grouting soil nail is demanded due to problems beyond of economical and engineering purpose. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PGSN (Pressurized Grouting Soil Nailing) system is respected to reduced displacements of nails and increase of global slope stability. And effects of various factors related to the design of the PGSN system, such as the length of the soil nail, injected pressure and W/C ratio of cement grout in the pressurized grouting soil nail are examined throughout a series of the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests. Displacement-controlled field pull-out tests are performed in the present study and the volume of grouting are also evaluated based on the measurements. In addition, both short-term and long-term characteristics of pull-out deformations of the newly proposed PGSN system are analyzed and compared with those of the general soil nailing system by carrying out the stress-controlled field pull-out tests. From the pull-out characteristics of pressurized grouting soil nails, it is found that the effect of the length of the soil nail, injected pressure and W/C ratio of cement grout are important parameters.

Landslides triggered by rainfall produces severe effects on the serviceability and stability of railway operation. Since small amount of soil mass slipped on the rail can cause derailment which will cause severe danger on the human and trains, slope stability problem is one of the major concerns on the operation of railway. In this study we investigate the some of characteristics of rainfall driven landslide near railroad. A total of 23 sites were visited. From the results four types of landslides based upon the morphology of the slipped slope triggered by rainfall were classified. From the analysis dimensions of slopes (height, length and slope) do not show particular correlation with the types of landslides. In addition, morphological and geological features of slope influence on the occurrence of different types of landslides.

The structural specification of the rockfall prevention fence installed on the road section is computed according to the hypothetic rockfall energy, and the absorbable energy of the rockfall prevention fence is defined as the sum of the absorption energies of the wire rope, one of the components, the steel support and the wire netting. But the results of the field tests confirmed that the absorption energy of the rockfall prevention fence is not the sum of the energies sustainable by the components, but it is affected by the absorbable energy of part of the components. This shows there are problems with the method of computing the absorption energy of the rockfall prevention fence of the road. So in this paper, as a way of solving the problems, the effects of improving the performance through positional changes of the existing components and the effects of improving the performance through structural changes by expanded metal are checked through tests, and a plan was proposed to solve the problems with the standards of installing the conventional rockfall prevention fence.

In this paper, the rock bolts, soil nails with filling grout and the micro-piling with injecting grout by pressure were applied for the stabilization of the cut slopes consisting of sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks respectively. The field measurements and 3-D FEM analyses to find out mobilized tensile stresses of the grouted-reinforcing members installed in the drilled holes were executed on each site. With assuming the increments of the cohesive strength in the improved ground, the back analysis using direct calibration approach of changing the elastic modulus of the ground was used to find out the improved elastic modulus which yields the same tensile stresses from field measurements. The results of back analysis show that the elastic modulus of the improved ground were 4 to 6 times as large as the elastic modulus of original ground. Consequently, the design for slope reinforcement to be more rational, it is proposed that not only the improved cohesive strength is to be used in the incremental ranges on well-known previous proposed data, but also the increased elastic modulus which is about 5 times as large as the original elastic modulus is to be considered in design.

It is unavoidable to be formed slopes under special circumstance of Korea where 70% of the whole area are composed of mountains when civil engineering projects such as roads, site developments are increased with industrial development and horizontal expansions of urban area. Moreover, stability of the slopes become one of quite important issues under special meteorological characteristics that over two-thirds of annual average rainfall are concentrated in summer season and the localized torrential downpour are getting more frequent recently. Resulting in these circumstances, partial slope failures by debris flow of the high water content soils are occurred frequently in cutting soil slopes. In this case of debris flow slope failure, slope declination method are selected for their stable recovery because it is impossible to recover entirely by existing recovery methods. Seeding or special grass planting methods are followed separately without exception. The method by which entire recover with bigger stability ratio would be possible and grass planting work would be done simultaneously is developed. In this study, the results of the tests including a real construction history in a failed slope using developed method are described

Shear strength parameters obtained from filed survey are important factors in the analysis of slope stability. In this study, sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of input parameters on the analysis of slope stability. The input parameters selected for sensitivity analysis were slope angle, cohesion, and friction angle. Monte-Carlo Simulation method was used for calculating input parameters and the factor of safety was computed by means of limit equilibrium method. A rock slope, which has failed in the field, was used for the sensitivity analysis in the analysis of slope stability. The result of analysis shows that the factor of safety of the rock slope was a little low. From partial correlation coefficient(PPC) of input parameters determined from the sensitivity analysis, slope stability was dependant on cohesion and slope angle. The effect of friction angle was lower than that of cohesion and slope angle on slope stability.

In this study, a probabilistic prediction model for debris flow occurrence was developed using a logistic regression analysis. The model can be applicable to metamorphic rocks and granite area. In order to develop the prediction model, detailed field survey and laboratory soil tests were conducted both in the northern and the southern Gyeonggi province and in Sangju, Gyeongbuk province, Korea. The six landslide triggering factors were selected by a logistic regression analysis as well as several basic statistical analyses. The six factors consist of two topographic factors and four geological and geotechnical factors. The model assigns a weight value to each selected factor. The verification results reveal that the model has 86.5% of prediction accuracy. Therefore, it is possible to predict landslide occurrence in a probabilistic and quantitative manner.

Slope failures during heavy rainfall have resulted in death of life and economic loss. In recent years, the research on slope damage assessment using Geographical Information System(GIS) has been actively carried out by researchers of several goverment organizations and schools. The researchers in Highway and Transportation Technology Institute (HTTI) of Korea Highway Corporation has developed the GIS database(DB), including highway, rainfalls, soil or rock geometry, types of damage, etc. and have been working on the damage assessment of highway slopes. The DB has been established and summarized in two different ways, such as highway routes and administrative districts. Grid of rainfall intensity generated by maximum rainfalls of each administrative district has been devloped. It shows good correlation of slope damage with heavy rainfalls. Most of damaged slopes were found in the amount of 100 mm to 300 mm rainfalls.

Engineers have performed slope stability analyses, including Limit Equilibrium Analysis, Finite Difference Analysis and Finite Element Analysis. Each analysis results in different Factor of Safety(FS) for slopes. The comparison of FS results from these stability analyses has been carried out for various conditions, such as geometry of slopes, dry and fully saturated soils, nail and anchor reinforcements. Standard deviations of FS calculated from various slope analyses are 0.03 to 0.04 and 0.22 to 0.48 for the slopes without and with nail or anchor reinforcement, respectively. Construction of tiered concrete retaining wall in addition to nail or anchor reinforcement increases FS of 12% to 29% for fully saturated soils.

This paper presents a case history of a geosynthetics-reinforced segmental retaining wall, which collapsed during a sever rainfall immediately after the completion of the wall construction. In an attempt to identify possible causes for the collapse, a comprehensive investigation was carried out including physical and strength tests on the backfill, stability analyses on the as-built design based on the current design approaches, and slope stability analyses with pore pressure consideration. The investigation revealed that the inappropriate as-built design and the bad-quality backfill were mainly responsible for the collapse. This paper describes the site condition including wall design, details of the results of investigation and finally, lessons learned. Practical significance of the findings from this study is also discussed.

The coefficient of consolidation has been evaluated using the conventional oedometer tests based on the one-dimensional consolidation theory. In the field, however, the actual response of the soil will be subject to the three-dimensional condition during consolidation. In this research, a new estimation method of the coefficient of consolidation for the various stress-deformation conditions was proposed. The good agreement between the computed dissipation of pore pressure and the measured data confirms the usefulness and the applicability of the proposed method to predict the exact rate of consolidation.

The ground excavation causes the deformation of the ground where the neighborhood structure is located. The ground deformation result in the vertical settlement of the neighborhood structure as well as the horizontal displacement of the temporary earth retaining structures. The decreased volume of the soil due to the ground settlement is defined as 'the ground loss quantity' or 'the ground loss'. When excavation is performed nearby existing structures, retaining walls should be designed and constructed to minimize the ground loss. Among various methods for reducing the ground loss, this study introduces the pre-loading method which has been recently developed. The reduction effect of the ground loss by pre-loading has been found to be larger as using a wall with relatively smaller rigidity.

Recently geosynthetics that can be constructed on soft ground have been used for reinforcement and separation in various ways. Through laboratory model tests and numerical analysis, in this study, estimated the suitability of cable elements and appropriate input factors considering loading effect in modeling of geosynthetics. First, in laboratory model tests, geosynthetics were constructed on the clay, and covered with the thickness, 7.5cm of sand mat. And then static and dynamic model tests were performed measuring loading, settlement, ground lateral displacement, and displacements of geosynthetics, but, for cyclic loading, bearing capacity increased linearly with stiff slop because cyclic loading with constant cyclic pressure compacted the ground. Numerical analysis were performed with FLAC 4.0 2D using Mohr-Coulomb and Modified Cam-Clay models, and they compared with the results of model tests. Cable elements of FLAC in modeling geosynthetics couldn't consider the characteristics of geosynthetics that increase shear strength between geosynthetics and clay according to the loading increase. Therefore, in this study, appropriate equation that can consider loading effects in Cable elements was proposed by Case Study.

In order to analyze effects of strain rate on consolidation characteristics on Busan clay, a series of constant rate of strain(CRS) consolidation tests with different strain rate and incremental loading test(ILT) were performed. From experimental test results, it was found that the preconsolidation pressure was dependent on the corresponding strain rate occurred during consolidation process. Also, consolidation curves normalized with respect to preconsolidation pressure gave a unique stress-strain curve. Coefficient of consolidation and permeability estimated from CRS test had a tendancy to converge to a certain value at normally consolidated range regardless of strain rate. An increase in excess pore pressure without change of total stress was noted on the incremental loading test after the end of loading.

Compressibility and deformability of clays change greatly when the clays are subjected to disturbance. These tendencies have been studied. However, the effect of the disturbance on the permeability that consists of consolidation properties has not yet been studied. In this study, relationship between permeability and volume ratio under the different degree of disturbance are experimently obtained. The results indicate that the relations are less influenced if the disturbance is less depending on the kind of soils.

There were no cases to use CJM Grouting to Reduce the Permeability of open-cut in Alluvium adjacent to Han River. In this paper, the applicability of CJM Grouting to Reduce the Permeability in Alluvium is reasonably estimated by in-situ Permeability test and coring. It is known that the range of improvement is decided by injection pressure, time of high pressure water and by slump, injection pressure of injection materials.

Sand pile method, such as sand drain method and sand compaction pile method, has been popularly used as an improvement method for soft clay grounds. The effect of accelerating consolidation of soft clay grounds has been evaluated with Barron's solution. By the way, the consolidation behavior of soft clay ground with sand piles strongly depends on both the nonlinear mechanical interaction between sand piles and surrounding clays and the degradation permeability of clays. In this paper, the method for determining consolidation parameters of soft clay ground with sand drains by using Barron's solution was proposed, through a series of numerical simulations. Through the method, the change in both volume compressibility and permeability during consolidation was reasonably evaluated.

This paper introduces a new method of improvement for marine soft ground, MLPP(Marine Large Pack Pile). The MLPP is a reinforcement technique for the conventional SCP or GCP piles by confining with geotextile pack. A pilot project at Busan New Port site and laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate the settlement reduction and bearing capacity enhancement effect of pack pile. The results of field and laboratory tests show that MLPP method can be a safe and economic alternative method for SCP and GCP.

At present, there are several problems related with sand mat which is used as a way to accelerate consolidation settlement, act like an underground drainage layer and increase trafficability simultaneously. First of all, the unbalance oft he demand and supply of sand is the one of the biggest problems, which makes not only price advance of sand but also delays a term of total construction work. Secondly, the damage of ecosystem and scenery is triggered by thoughtless sand dredging or mining. So, the need that the sand for sand mat should be replaced with a new environmental friendly material has been increased. Fiber mat may be one of the proper materials that suits the need. Therefore, we intended to compare the drainage properties of sand mat with those of fiber mat by experimental model tests. On the basis of the test results, fiber mat took shorter period of consolidation than sand mat and it's amount of settlement showed a little bit bigger than the other. In conclusion, the substitutability of fiber mat for sand mat could be placed highly in view of drainage efficiency. Furthermore, when Fiber mat is used, it has an advantage that spoil soil of the construction site or nearby site can be used for the purpose of increasing trafficability in addition to a role of drainage layer.

In soft ground the settlement criterion usually governs. Therefore, it is very important not only reasonable assessment of the allowable bearing capacity of the soil but also reasonable assessment of settlement. In the previous studies by many other researchers, load concentration ratio and settlement reduction factor are usually proposed for estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles. In the previous studies, the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as composite ground and the analysis is performed with in the basis of this assumption. However, the lateral deformation of granular compaction pile could not be considered and only the relative vertical strength between pile and soils could be considered in the analysis. In this study, a method adapting the Tresca failure criterion is proposed for calculating settlement of granular compaction pile. Proposed method can be considered the strength of pile material, pile diameter, installing distance of pile and the deformation behavior of vertical and horizontal directions of pile. In the presented study, large-scale field load test is performed and the results are described. Also, predictions of settlements from the proposed method are compared with the results of the load test. In addition, a series of parametric study is performed and the design parameters are analyzed.

Ground response analysis is one of the most important and most commonly encountered problems in geotechnical earthquake engineering. It is a prerequisite step for liquefaction assessment of saturated soil or the pseudo-static and dynamic analysis of geotechnical structures. A number of techniques have been developed for ground response analysis. In this study, ground response analyses were performed using the computer programs that are currently being used domestically. From these analyses, the analysis techniques applied to the programs were compared and analyzed. The results of ground response analyses were compared as follows: 1) 1-dimensional analysis vs. 2-dimensional analysis; 2) equivalent linear analysis vs. nonlinear analysis.

Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave which makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis which is used both Love wave dispersion information and Rayleigh wave dispersion information was proposed. Purpose of the joint inversion analysis is to improve accuracy and convergency of inversion results utilizing that frequency contribution of each wave is different. This analysis technique is consisted of the forward modeling using transfer matrix, the sensitivity matrix determined to the ground system and DLSS(Damped Least Square Solution) as a inversion technique. The application of this analysis was examined through the field test.

Piezo-ceramics are special materials which transform energy between mechanical and electrical forms. Bender-elements are composite materials consisting of thin piezo-ceramics and elastic shims, and are widely used as actuators and transducers in the field of electronics, robotics, autos and mechatronics utilizing the effectiveness of energy transformation capability. In geotechnical engineering, commercial bender-elements are used in laboratory as source and receiver in the measurements of soil stiffness. The elements were built by using various metal shims sandwiched between piezo-ceramics and coating over the composite in the research. A pair of elements were buried in a concrete block and used as source and receiver to measure the stiffness of the concrete. The test results were verified by comparing with the resonant column testing results. In a preliminary stage of the development of an in-situ seismic testing equipment using bender-elements for soft clay materials, shear waves were generated and measured by burying the elements in the barrel of kaolinite and water mixture. The measured shear wave signals were so distinct for the first-arrival pick that applicability of the elements in the field measurements is very promising.

Liquefaction characteristics of saturated sand under various dynamic loadings such as sinusoidal, wedge, increasing wedge and real earthquake loading are investigated focusing on the excess pore water pressure build up instead of liquefaction resistance strength in this paper. There are large differences between two types of earthquake loading - impact and vibration in liquefaction characteristics. The angle of phase change line of sinusoidal loading is very close to the vibration type, whereas the cumulative deviator stress and cumulative plastic strain are larger than two types of real earthquake loadings. On the other hand, the liquefaction characteristics of increasing wedge loadings are located in the range between vibration and impact earthquake loadings. It is concluded that the sinusoidal loading overestimates the resistance of soil under real earthquake loading. Based on results obtained, the increasing wedge loading can reflect the liquefaction behavior under real earthquake loadings more efficiently than sinusoidal loading based on equivalent uniform stress concept.

This work reports results of our study on the dynamic responses of the buried pipelines both along the axial and the transverse directions under various boundary end conditions. We have considered three cases, i.e., the free ends, the fixed ends, and the fixed-free ends for the axial direction, and three more cases including the guided ends, the simply supported ends, and the supported-guided ends for the transverse direction. In order to investigate the effect of the boundary end conditions for the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline, we have devised a computer program to find the solutions of the formulae on the dynamic responses (displacements, axial strains, and bending strains) under the various boundary end conditions considered in this study. The dynamic behavior of the buried pipelines for the forced vibration is found to exhibit two different forms, a transient response and a steady state response, depending on the time before and after the transfer of a seismic wave on the end of the buried pipeline. The former is identified by a slight change in its behavior before the sinusoidal-shaped seismic wave travels along the whole length of the pipeline whereas the latter by the complete form of a sinusoidal wave when the wave travels throughout the pipeline. The transient response becomes insignificant as the wave speed increases. We have observed a resonance when the mode wavelength matches the wavelength of the seismic wave, where the mode number(k) of resonance for the axial direction is found to be
$\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V+1/2$ for the fixed-free ends,$\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V+1$ for the free ends, and$\overline{\omega}/{\pi}V$ for the fixed ends, respectively. By adding 10 more modes to the mode number(k) of resonance, we were able to study all the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline for the axial direction. On the other hand, we have not been able to observe a resonance in the analysis for the transverse direction, because the dynamic responses are found to vanish after the seventh mode. From the results of the dynamic responses at the many points of the pipeline, we have found that the responses appeared to be dependent critically on the boundary end conditions. Such effects are found to be most prominent especially for the maximum values of the displacement and the strain and its position. -
Recently, surface-wave methods have been widely used for site investigation due to economic advantage and improved reliability. Specially, the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Wave (SASW) method has been used to evaluate soil properties in geotechnical engineering. In determination of subgrade stiffness by SASW measurements, only the vertical Rayleigh waves have been used. This study proposed a framework to determine shear-wave velocity profiles by using vertical and horizontal Rayleigh waves and Love wave all together. In addition, the Common-Array-Profiling(CAP) SASW method was employed, which subgrade stiffness of profile the local material under two fixed receivers. The procedure proposed in this study was verified by comparing the shear-wave velocity profiles with the shear-wave velocity profiles of downhole testing at two geotechnical sites.

Track substructure(ballast, subgrade) should have sufficient strength and adequate stiffness to fully support track superstructure(rail, fastener, sleeper). Vertical support stiffness of track comes from the sufficient thickness, adequate strength and stiffness of material of substructure layers. Since the vertical support stiffness of track substructure is closely related with the track geometry, the evaluation of the stiffness is very important to understand the track states. This paper introduces the system, which are composed of Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR), Portable Ballast Sampler(PBS), and Light Falling Weight Deflectometer(LFWD), to evaluate substructure condition and summarizes the field test results performed with the reliable system.

Physical parameters such as porosity and effective porosity are important physical parameters that determine the transfer and movement of water and solutes in porous media. Various methods of determining these parameters have been developed, with varying degrees of accuracy and applicability. Most of the existing methods produce static results. They do not produce instantaneous and real time of porosity and effective porosity in a porous media. In this study, a new permittivity method called Frequency Domain Reflectometry with Vector analyzer (FDR-V) is proposed to determine the porosity and effective porosity of some sand samples in the laboratory. The advantage of the FDR-V method is that it instantaneously determines the temporal variation of dielectric constants of porous media. Then, the porosity and the effective porosity of porous media are computed using well established empirical equations. Results obtained from the FDR-V method compared favorably with results from other permittivity methods such as gravimetric, injection and replacement tests. The ratio of effective porosity to porosity was
$85{\sim}92%$ , when FDR-V was used. This value compared favourably with 90%, which has been usually quoted in previous studies. Considering the convenience and its applicability, the measurement system of FDR-V permittivity holds a great potential in porous media and contaminant transport studies. -
Studying unsaturated soil mechanics, determination of soil water characteristic curve and permeability equation is an essential factor but it is not easy. In this research a new testing apparatus was developed to determine soil water characteristic curve and permeability equation. The testing to get saturated permeability coefficients and soil water characteristic curves for two soils was performed by using the developed testing apparatus. First, a saturated permeability testing was performed and then the testing to get soil water characteristic curve of a drying process was performed. Next, the testing to get soil water characteristic curve of a wetting process was performed. Testing results showed hysteresis phenomena between soil water characteristic curve of a drying process and soil water characteristic curve of a wetting process. The permeability equations were determined by a theoretical method where a saturated permeability coefficient and a soil water characteristic curve were used.

This paper describes a systematic way of identifying the horizontal coefficient of consolidation for clayey soil under undrained condition and silty soil under partial drained condition by applying an optimization technique to the early part of dissipation data measured from the self-boring pressuremeter strain holding test. An analytical solution developed by Randolph & Wroth (1979) was implemented in normalized form to express the build-up and dissipation of excess pore pressures around a pressuremeter as a function of the rigidity index. Horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined by minimizing the differences between theoretical and measured excess pore pressure curves using optimization technique. It was found that the proposed optimization technique can evaluate in-situ horizontal coefficient of consolidation rationally, which is similar with that obtained from the piezocone dissipation test. Furthermore, proposed method can evaluate appropriate coefficient of consolidation for soil under partially drained condition.

In this study, we conducted geophysical investigations for the organization of integrated geophysical methods to detect underground cavities of ground subsidence area at the field test site, located at Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun. We examined the applicability of geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity, electromagnetic, and microgravity to cavity detection with the aid of borehole survey results. Underground cavities are widely present within the limestone bedrock overlain by the alluvial deposits in the area of the test site where the ground subsidences have occurred in the past. The limestone cavities are mostly filled with groundwater and clays in the test site. Thus, cavities have low electrical resistivity and density compared to the surrounding host bedrock. The results of the study have shown that the zones of low resistivity and density correspond to the zones of the cavities identified in the boreholes at the site, and that the geophysical methods used are very effective to detect underground cavities. Furthermore, we could map the distribution of cavities more precisely with the test results incorporated from the various geophysical methods. It is also important to notice that the microgravity method is a very promising tool since it has rarely used for the cavity detection in korea. Beyond the investigation of underground cavities, the geophysical methods are required to provide useful information for the reinforcement design for the ground subsidence areas. It is, therefore, necessary to develop integrated geophysical technique incorporating different geophysical methods to precisely map underground cavities and image the subsurface of the ground subsidence areas. -
Three dimensional finite difference elastic wave model was developed to estimate the feasibility of surface wave applications in geotechnical problems. The wave motions calculated by the developed program in this study shows good agreement with well known analytic solutions. The surface wave motions calculated from layered dam type structure can be interpreted as a infinite layer structure using dispersion curve but it is need a special source of which high energy in frequency band lower than 10 Hz to get information of physical properties in few tens meter deep. The source which has high energy in the low frequency band, however, can give defect on dam and this will make some limitation in real field applications. The dispersion curves calculated from the surface wave motion of homogeneous and center core type dam models will give rise to fatal errors if the conventional infinite layer structure used in their interpretation because the surrounding materials and boundaries of dam make some distortion in dispersion curve of surface wave. So it is strongly recommended to use three dimensional inversion model for correct interpretation and estimation of physical properties of dam materials.

Shear modulus (or rigidity) of dam material is an important parameter which can be directly associated with the deformation of dam. Seepage or leakage of water can cause the defects or cracks of dam body. The existence of cracks and rigidity of dam body are decisive information for the estimation of dam safety. Rigidity of material is mainly determined from S-wave velocity and the defects of dam body can be detected by seismic reflection survey. Therefore, seismic reflection survey will be a desirable method which can give a solution about dam safety problem. Among various physical properties of dam body, S-wave velocity is the most important information but it is not easy to get the information. In this study, diverse measuring techniques of S-wave reflection survey were attempted to get the information about S-wave velocity of dam body. Ultimately, S-wave velocity could be estimated by the analysis of SH reflection events which can be easily observed in shot gather data obtained from SH measuring technique. Meanwhile, P-wave reflection survey was also performed at the same profile. P-beam radiation technique which can reduce the surface waves and reinforce the P-wave reflection events was applied for giving a help to analyse P-wave velocity. In the end, P-and S-wave velocity, Vs/Vp, Poisson's ratio distribution of the vertical section under the profile could be acquired.

Recently shield TBM tunnellings are being applied to subway construction in Korean cities. Generally these kinds of tunnellings have the problems in the stability of ground such as subsidence because urban subway is constructed in the shallow depth. A sinkhole occurred on the road just above the tunnel during tunneling in Kwangju, so a survey for upper layer of the tunnel was needed. But conventional Ground Probing Radar can't be applicable due to the presence of steel-mesh screen in the shield segment, so no existent geophysical method is applicable in this site. Because the outer surface of each shield segment is electrically insulated, dipole-dipole resistivity method which is popular in engineering site investigation, was tried to this survey for the first time. Specially manufactured flexible ring-type electrodes were installed into the grouting holes at an interval of 2.4 m on the ceiling. The K-Ohm II system which has been developed by KIGAM and tested successfully in many sites, was used in this site. The system consists of 1000Volt-1Ampere constant-current transmitter, optically isolated 24 bit sigma-delta A/D conversion receiver - maximum 12 channel simultaneous measurements, and graphical automatic acquisition software for easy data quality check in real time. Borehole camera logging with circular white LED lighting was also done to investigate the state of the layer. Measured resistivity data lack of some stations due to failing opening lids of holes, shows general high-low trend well. The dipole-dipole resistivity inversion results discriminate (1) one approximately 4 meter diameter cavity (grouted but incompletely hardened, so low resistivity - less than
$30{\Omega}m$ ), (2) weak zone (100-200${\Omega}m$ ), and (3) hard zone (high resistivity - more than 1000${\Omega}m$ ) very well for the distance of 320 meters. The 2-D inversion neglects slight absolute 3-D effect, but we can get satisfactory and useful information. Acquired resistivity section and video tapes by borehole camera logging will be reserved and reused if some problem occurs in this site in the future. -
Design analysis for underground spaces requires evaluating stability related to tunnel collapses. A failure mode is one of the critical factors in the conventional methods of stability analysis. Therefore identification of failure modes is essential in securing safe construction in the phase of design analysis, instrumentation planning and implementation of reinforcing measures. In this study failure modes at the tunnel heading in granular soils are investigated using physical model tests and numerical simulation for various tunnel depths and ground surface inclinations. Test results indicated that the effect of depth and inclination of ground surface on a failure mode are significant. It is identified that, with an incase in depth, failure modes become localized in a region close to the tunnel. It is also known that an increase in the inclination of ground surface results in inclined and wide failure modes.

The appropriate ventilation system in vehicular tunnel should be the most economical solution with regard to both construction and maintenance. The damages on tunnel lining was affected by formula of ventilation system in long vehicular tunnel. In this study, carbonation, one of main experimental items in precision safety diagnosis, was analyzed by contouring damage area with ventilation system. Considerations of carbonation were also given to the design and maintenance which manage the long-term safety in tunnel.

Fire accidents in underground space may bring much loss of lives as well as properties and result in catastrophic disasters. This study aimed to manufacture the high-temperature furnace capable of simulating fire scenarios (RABT and RWS) and carry out the preliminary fire tests to evaluate fire-induced damage in underground structures. Specimens used in the fire tests were the concrete segments generally used in shield TBM tunnels. The simulated fire scenario was set to the RABT curve that is the most representative fire scenario in underground space. From the fire tests, the spalling was estimated to reach approximately 20cm from the surface exposed to fire. In addition, from the observation of core specimens obtained after fire tests, the deteriorated zone of unspalled specimens amounted to approximately 10cm from the surface of spalling.

In this paper, the characteristics of excessive horizontal stress components in Korea were studied using the in-situ hydraulic fracturing stress measurement data over five hundred in 110 individual test boreholes. Based on the in-situ testing data, the magnitude and orientation of the horizontal stress component and variation of stress ratio (K) with depth were investigated. And also horizontal stress magnitude versus depth relationships and distribution limits of stress ratio components were suggested. For the subsurface space above 310 m depth in the entire territory, the stress ratio has a tendency to diminish and be stabilized with depth, but for some areas, it was revealed that the excessive horizontal stress fields with stress ratio close to 3.0 below 200 m in depth have formed. The result of investigation for excessive horizontal stress regions indicates that there exist several regions above 300 m in depth where localized excessive horizontal stresses enough to induce potentially brittle failure around future openings have formed.

Shotcrete lining is likely to be deteriorated due to the ground water which the lining is exposed to. Some tunnel collapses seemed to be affected by shotcrete degradation were reported. But there isn't any assessment method of shotcret long-term degradation. So, Experimental technology for shotcrete long-term degradation modeling was developed in this study. The shotcrete long-term degradation modeling, developed in other study in Korea Institute of Construction Technology, require the time-history of volume change. Digital strain observation system was used to acquire the time-history of volume change. To verify the Strain Observation Digital System, the measurement using the system was compared to the one using a micrometer. Through this process, The experiment for shotcrete long-term degradation modeling was set up.

The research concentrates on improving the in-hole seismic probe, which has been developed in past five years, to be used in stiffness measurements of tunnel-face materials. The probe was down-sized to be fit in 45-mm diameter holes(or BX) drilled by a jumbo-drill, which is used to drill holes to install explosives for tunneling. Also trigger system was improved by using a down-speeding motor for operating convenience and air packing system was replaced with a set of plate-springs to eliminate supply of compressed air. These modifications are to adjust the probe for the unfavourable environment inside of tunnels and to test without any further drilling cost. The probe and testing procedure were successfully adopted with horizontal holes drilled by a jumbo-drill at a tunnel-face to evaluate the stiffness of rock mass. The measured shear wave velocities can be used to estimate deformation properties of rock mass for tunnel analyses.

In the case of tunneling, the equilibrium state of hydro-geologic environments destroy and change abruptly in some section of whole works. Specially, it's very possible for seawater to intrude toward the site of tunnel if the field is nearly located in a costal region. In this study, we have evaluated the mechanism related between groundwater flow and seawater intrusion that by impacts of tunneling. Various hydro-geological field tests have performed for getting four representative hydrogeologic properties of geologic formations such as transmissivity (T), storativity(S), longitudial dispersity(${\alpha}_L$ ), and effective porosity($n_e$ ). For the effect of tunneling, the numerical model was first simulated based on the governing equation of groundwater flow. The results showed that the maximum drawdown was 17.2m and the total inflow into the tunnel had the range from 0.48 to$3.63m^3/day/m$ . Secondly, the three dimensional numerical model was analyzed to investigate a characteristic of seawater intrusion based on the previous simulated results of groundwater flow. The results showed the seawater moved as the range of$200{\sim}220m$ from the initial interface between seawater and groundwater toward the tunnel. -
This paper presents the interaction effect between tunneling and groundwater on tunnel behavior. A parametric study is then conducted on the various tunneling situations frequently encountered in Seoul area using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element model with emphasis on the effects of ground and lining permeabilities. It is shown that the ground and lining responses are significantly influenced by the relative permeability between the ground and the lining, and that the circumferential pre-grouting is effective in minimizing the tunnelling and groundwater interaction.

Many public facilities including roadway, railway, and embedded pipe lines in this country have been damaged by the repeated freezing and thawing of the soil during winter and spring every year. However, there are only few research results in field of frozen ground in this country. Also, there are no the formulation of the reasonable equation for frost penetration depths and of the criterion for identifing potentially frost-susceptible soil in design manual of pavement yet. Through this study it is anticipated to asses the frost action problem in roadway, railway, and water suppply lines and to establish the design criterion about pavement in seasonal cold region.

At present around 50 companies have their own crushing plants, which manufacture rock into crushed sand, over around 350 different quarry throughout the nation. However, in most plants the stone dust sludge is left as it is in their plants so that they have difficulty to utilize. Furthermore, environmental pollution may be even caused due to dust generated when it is dried. Recycling is starting capturing the attention of the people working over the quarry due to the reasons described above. This research has studied in the quarters the usability as landfill liner of the stone dust sludge, which is industrial waste. We investigated what technological properties it would have after mixing the stone dust sludge with SM(sandy soil) first and then with blast furnace slag or reject ash, which is waste, and cement as the stabilizer. As the result of three tests; compacting test, strength test, and permeability test; to satisfy the regulatory guideline of the government that is the compress strength over 5
$kgf/cm^2$ , the flexibility over 1$kgf/cm^2$ , and the permeability under$1.0{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ From this research, we could confirm that stone dust sludge would be used as waste landfill liner if it were mixed with other waste by the proper mixing ratio. -
Acid Rock Drainage(ARD) is the product formed by the atmospheric(i.e. by water, oxygen and carbon dioxide) oxidation of the relatively common iron-sulphur minerals pyrite(
$FeS_2$ ). ARD causes the acidification and heavy metal contamination of water and soil and the reduction of slope stability. In this study the generation characteristics and the prediction of ARD of various road cut slopes were studied. An attempt to classify the rocks into several groups according to their acid generation potentials was made. Acid Base Accounting(ABA) tests, commonly used as a screening tool in ARD predictions, were performed. Sixteen rock samples were classified into PAF(potentially acid forming) group and four rock samples into NAF(non-acid forming) group. The chemical analysis of water samples strongly suggested that ARD with high content of heavy metals and low pH could pollute the ground water and/or stream water. -
지반오염조사에 대한 유전상수 측정기법의 적용성을 평가하기 위하여 중금속 오염도에 따른 흙의 유전특성 변화를 분석하였다. 유전상수의 실수부와 허수부 모두 체적함수비에 따른 증가경향을 나타내었으며, 특히 MHz 범위에서 유전상수 실수부는 쌍극자모멘트에 비례하기 때문에 흙의 유전상수는 체적함수비에 따른 선형적인 증가경향을 나타내었다. 중금속 용액은 50kHz 이하의 저주파영역에서 전극 분극효과에 의해 농도 증가에 따라 유전상수 실수부가 증가하는 경향을 나타내었으나, 고주파 영역에서는 이온의 수화작용에 의한 물분자의 배향분극 발현 감소로 인하여 유전상수 실수부가 감소하였다. 유전상수 허수부의 경우에는 모든 주파수 영역에서 중금속 농도 증가에 따른 전도손실에 의하여 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 흙과 중금속 혼합시료의 경우 함수비가 큰 시료에서는 중금속 용액 자체의 유전특성이 그대로 발현되었으나, 함수비가 작은 시료에서는 공간전하분극의 영향이 우세하여 유전상수 실수부가 10-20%정도 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 유전상수 허수부의 경우에는 중금속 농도 증가에 따른 뚜렷한 증가경향을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과에 의하면 중금속의 오염감지에 대해서는 유전상수 실수부보다는 허수부의 적용성이 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 현장에서의 정확한 오염도 평가를 위해서는 함수비에 대한 평가가 선행되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.

$K_{30}{\geq}20kgf/cm^3$ in plate bearing test.$K_{30}$ to be acquired 100% compaction degree of upper subgrade is confirmed to about$31kgf/cm^3$ from correlation$K_{30}$ vs relative compaction degree. -
The behavior of jointed rock mass is much different from that of intact rock due to the presence of joints. Similarly, the characteristics of elastic wave propagation in jointed rock are considerably different from those of intact rock. The propagation of elastic waves in jointed rock is greatly dependent on the state of stress. The roughness, filling materials, and spacing of joints also affect wave propagation in jointed rock. If the wavelength of elastic waves is much larger than the spacing between joints, wave propagation in jointed rock mass can be considered as wave propagation in equivalent continuum. A rock resonant column testing apparatus is made to measure elastic waves propagating through jointed rock in the state of equivalent continuum. Three types of wave, i.e, torsional, longitudinal and flexural waves are monitored during rock resonant column tests. Various roughness and filling materials are applied to joints, and rock columns with various spacings are used to understand how these factors affect wave propagation under a small strain condition. The experimental results suggest that the characteristics of wave propagation in jointed rock mass are governed by the state of stress and influenced by roughness, filling materials and joint spacings.

The evaluation process of rock mass properties intrinsically contains some uncertainty due to the inhomogeneity of rock mass and the measurement error. Although various empirical methods for the determination of rock mass properties were suggested, there is no way of integrating various information on rock mass properties except averaging. For these reasons, this research introduces evidence theory which can model epistemic uncertainty and yield reasonable rock mass properties through combining various information such as empirical equations, in-situ test results, and so on. Through the application of evidence theory to the real site investigation and in situ experiment results, an interval of deformation modulus, cohesion and friction angle of rock mass were obtained. The ratios between lower and upper bound of those properties ranges from 1.6 to 3.6. Numerical analyses of circular hole using the properties for TYPE-2 rock mass were carried out. The magnitude or size of plastic region and radial displacement in case of lower bound properties is about 4 times larger than that of upper bound properties.

Based on an estimating method for post-cyclic strength and stiffness with cyclic triaxial tests, Direct Simple Shear (DSS) tests were carried out to confirm whether the method can be adapted to DSS test on fine-grained soils: silty clay, plastic silt, and non-plastic silt. Results from post-cyclic DSS tests were interpreted by a modified method as adopted for post-cyclic triaxial tests. In particular, influence of plasticity index for fine-grained soils was emphasised. Findings obtained from the present study are: (i) the higher the plasticity index of fine-grained soils is, the less not stiffness ratio but strength ratio decreases with increment of a normalised excess pore water pressure; and (ii) post-cyclic strength and stiffness results from DSS tests agree well with those predicted by the method modified from a procedure used for triaxial test results.

We find out many soft ground deep excavation cases where results of careless overexcavation accelerate the advance of loosening zone of adjacent ground, bucklings of struts and bottom heaves happen due to delayed supporting time. This article introduces a soft ground deep excavation case where steel pipe sheet piles were used with struts as an earth retaining system. There were 2 times of buckling in the supporting system and heaving of bottom ground due to overexcavation and insufficient penetration depth of the steel pipe sheet piles. The effort of this article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in the coming projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

An Experimental Study on Seepage Characteristics of Embedded Gravel and Rock Layer in the EmbankmentFor the purpose of studying on the seepage characteristics of embedded gravel layer in embankment, laboratory model tests were carried out. The embedded layer under embankment was
$19{\sim}26mm$ diameter of gravel and those embankment materials were Saemangum dredged sand, river sand and mixed(1:1) sand with dredged and river one. Those permeability coefficients of three different sands are$5.00{\times}10^{-5}$ ,$3.00{\times}10^{-4}$ ,$7.50{\times}10^{-5}m/s$ , respectively. Seepage characteristics of these results are as follows; 1) The Reynolds number of water flow through embedded gravel layer in three different permeable soils is less then 10, it is laminar flow. 2) These flow velocities through embedded gravel layer in soils are in proportion to these hydraulic gradients, it is Darcy flow. 3) These Darcian permeability coefficients of water flow through embedded gravel layer in soils show as$2.95{\times}10^{-3}$ ,$1.38{\times}10^{-2}$ ,$3.33{\times}10^{-3}$m/s , respectively, by varying permeability of embankment soils and embankment lengths. It is approximately 100 times of those permeability coefficients of embankment materials. -
An experimental investigation was carried out to study recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions from piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this paper is to develop eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to investigate their reinforcing effects for dredged soil improvement. A series of laboratory tests including compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate strength characteristics of soils treated by developed binder with varying water content of dredged soils, mixing rates of binder, and different curing days. Based on laboratory test results, eco-friendly binders developed here using waste oyster shells were found as good resource materials for soft soil improvements.

The factors affecting the long-term design strength of geogrid can be classified into factors on creep deformation, installation damage, temperature, chemical degradation and biological degradation. Especially, creep deformation and installation damage are considered as main factors to determine the long-term design strength of geogrid. Current practice in the design of reinforced soil is to calculate the long-term design strength of a reinforcement damaged during installation by multiplying the two partial safety factors,
$RF_{ID} and RF_{CR}$ . This method assumes that there is no synergy effect between installation damage and creep deformation of geogrids. Therefore, this paper describes the results of a series of experimental study, which are carried out to assess the combined effect of installation damage and creep deformation for the long-term design strength of geogrid reinforcement. The results of this study show that the tensile strength reduction factors, RF, considering combined effect between installation damage and creep deformation is less than that calculated by the current design method. -

In this study, a concrete faced rockfill dam constructed by stages was numerically analyzed, and the numerical results were compared with in situ measurements. The simple incremental elastic and isotropic hyperbolic model was employed to characterize the nonlinear deformation behavior of rockfill material and computational procedure followed construction sequence. A series of large triaxial tests for rockfill material were carried out to obtain mechanical input parameters. According to the analysis results, relative great additional deformation was introduced at the surface of stage-I dam body due to the loading by stage-II construction. The results reveal that numerical analysis can effectively simulate the construction processes, and some meaningful insights about the behavior of CFRD during construction were gained.

The public has negative understanding about dam construction nowadays although dam plays an important role in water supply to satisfy essential demand for living. Dam rehabilitation, in this actuality, has been recognized as an alternative to expedite continuous water policies related to irrigation and flood control. This study focused on dam rehabilitation and included its necessity and discussions on case histories associated with increasing reservoir capacity, spillway modification, overtopping protection, seepage control and improving stability of old dam. This paper, in geotechnical aspects, presents discussions of various rehabilitation methods and factors to be considered in designing dam rehabilitation.

The present precast top-base method create many problems of requiring it plant facilities, transportation and installation, due to the heavy weight of and it takes too long time to set it up on site. In order to improve and solve these problems, in-situ Top-Base method is developed. It include processes that install Top-Base mold made of poly-ethylene into ground, then pouring concrete into the mold, and fill the rest gaps with broken stones. Considerable advantages can be obtained by applying in-situ Top-Base method in aspects of the stability, economical and construction efficiency. In this research, model tests for in-situ Top-Base system are carried out in other to the investigate the load delivering mechanism and the effect of bearing capacity.

The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the mass conditions of rock with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. However, there are few available data and little guidance in the prediction of the end bearing capacity of drilled shafts socketed in weathered/soft rock, considering rock mass weathering. Therefore, a database of 13 load tests was constructed first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions(e.g. Em, Eur, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greather than 0.7 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.

In this research, the effect of rock mass weathering on the side shear resistance of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, a database of 23 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters varying from 400mm to 1,500mm were socketed into weathered igneous/meta-igneous rock at four different sites. The static axial load tests were performed to examine the resistant behavior of the piles, and a comprehensive field/laboratory testing program at the field test site was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the side shear resistance of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g.
$E_m,\;E_{ur},\;_{plm}$ , RMR, RQD, j) was found to be highly correlated with the side shear resistance, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the side shear resistance of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data. The existing empirical relations between the compressive strength of intact rock and the side shear resistance(Horvath (1982), Rowe & Armitage(1987) etc.) appeared to overestimated the side shear resistance of all piles tested in this research unless additional consideration on the effect of rock mass weathering or fracturing was applied. The existing methods which consider the effect of rock mass condition were modified and/or extended for weathered rock mass where mass factor j is lower than 0.1, and RQD is below 50%. -
This work aims at studing the stress-strain-strength behavior of an CSG(cemented sand and gravel) materials. An analysis of the mechanical behavior of the CSG is performed from the interpretation of results by unconfined compression test, large triaxial compression test in which the influence of both the degree of cementation and age. For CSG, It was concluded that the characterristics of compression are direct measurment of the degree of cementation and age. In addition, hyperbolic model is adopted to express the relation between elastic moduli and cementation, age, confined stress in small strain. The results of the test show that clear correlation with each other

In this study, a series of large-scale oedometer tests was performed to investigate the compressibility of rock fill materials. The testing samples were prepared to have three different grain size distributions and for each distribution, exist in two different states(dried and saturated). The test results indicated that particle breakages occurred mainly for the particles larger than 4.75mm in size and increased with increasing grain sizes. Also, it was found that, for a dry sample as it became well-graged, its compressibility decreased and accordingly, its tangent constrained modulus increased. A comparion between the samples in dry and saturated states revealed that compressibility of the materials increases with increasing water content. The values of tangent constrained modulus calculated for the tested dry samples were larger by about 10 to 20%, on average, than those for the saturated samples.

Most existing methods for the footing settlement estimation are for either isolated or strip footings. No sufficient details are available for settlement calculation of footings with different shapes and multiple footing conditions, which are commonly adopted in actual construction projects. In this paper, estimation of footing settlements for various footing conditions of different shapes and multiple conditions is investigated based on Schmertmann's method with focus on values of the strain influence factor
$I_z$ . In order to examine the effect of multiple footing conditions, field plate load tests are performed in sands using single and double plates. 3D non-linear finite element analyses are also performed for various footing conditions with different footing shape and distance ratios. Results obtained in this study indicate that there are two significant components in the strain influence diagram that need to be taken into account for settlement estimation of rectangular and multiple footings: depth of$I_{zp}$ and depth of strain influence zone. Based on results from experimental and 3D non-linear finite element analyses, improved strain influence diagrams available for various footing conditions are proposed. -
In this paper, the Coefficient of Subgrade Reaction was analyzed from the data which were the results of lateral pile loading tests and pressuremeter tests on construction sites. The prediction method with N-value was compared with lateral pile loading tests and the results of lateral pile loading tests were compared with the prediction method considering diameter of a pile. Also, the results of lateral pressuremeter tests were compared with those of lateral pile loading tests. As a result, consideration for a diameter and lateral deformation of a pile was needed when the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction is presumed. Therefore, a formula which is taking into account the allowable deformation of a pile was suggested from lateral pressuremeter tests in this study.

This study applied the NDS method to the creek levee and the foundation of a building, for the purpose of ground improvement and cut-off. The conclusions are shown in the following. (1) The results of the field tests in the creek levee are as follows; the N value of the standard penetration test is
$2{\sim}3$ before NDS grout and$9{\sim}21$ after NDS grout; in the alluvial layer,$7{\sim}11$ before NDS grout and$14{\sim}23$ after NDS grout. This confirms increasing ground strength with consistency ranging from stiff to very stiff. (2) The result of the permeability test in the creek levee shows that the ground had a great hydraulic conductivity with complete leakage before ground improvement but that the hydraulic conductivity has significantly increased to$3.17{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}4.65{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$ after ground improvement by the NDS method. (3) The result from the field test of the foundation of the building confirms great reinforcing effects, showing that the allowable bearing capacity has increased from Pa = 5.0$t/m^2$ before reinforcement to Pa = 25.0$t/m^2$ after reinforcement. -
시멘트밀크(저압이나 고압에 의한 선단확근말뚝공법)나 쏘일시멘트(SIP말뚝공법) 위에 안치된 말뚝기초의 선단지지력과 확대기초를 지지하는 시멘트밀크 고결체 기둥 기초의 연직지지력 공식을 알아보기 위하여 총 14개의 시험체에 대하여 정재하시험 및 하중전이시험을 실시하였다. 그 결과에 의하면, 고결체 주변지반의 구속효과가 없는 8개의 시험체는 말뚝선단보강형태와는 무관하게 말뚝선단 아래의 시멘트밀크 고결체의 강도와 면적이 클수록 크게 나타났으며, 평균구속계수는 자유표면의 영향으로 1 보다 적은 0.43(D+1)이었다. 그리고 고결체 주변지반의 구속효과를 받는 6가지 지반조건에서 설치된 말뚝의 구속계수는 말뚝선단 아래 시멘트밀크 고결체를 주변지반의 구속효과로 1 보다 큰 평균 2.1의 값을 나타내었다. 그리고 지반의 구속효과를 고려한 말뚝기초와 직접기초 아래에 설치된 시멘트밀크 고결체의 이론적인 (선단)지지력 공식을 제안하였다.

In this research, the reasonable local scour estimates considered conditions of the bed material and the flow was accomplished on two piers P14 and P17 of Il-san bridge. Especially, the Il-san bridge was located on the lower Han-river where is influenced by the tides of In-chon, and it has hydraulic condition that can cause the bridge piers local scour because of tides at ordinary times, as well as a flood. Therefore, the local scour depth has been presented influenced by the maximum velocity of the flow when a flood after construction and the tides on construction on the basis of the standards of river design and road design, furthermore, the results was made a comparative analysis. According to the results, the local scour depth on the basis of the standards of river design was higher than it on the basis of the standards of road design(SRICOS), and the local scour depth influenced by the maximum velocity of the flow when a flood after construction was determined the final local scour depth of P14 and P17 at the Il-san bridge. It was ascertained that the local scour depth did not exceed the inserted depth of bridge foundation.

The allowable bearing capacity of a pile, the most important factor in stability estimation, is determined by applying safety factor to the ultimate load or yield load. There are several but contradictory methods available in current design codes to estimate the allowable bearing capacity and the safety factor. This paper analyzes load-settlement curves obtained from 19 static load tests measured from 11 sites. At all tests, the load is applied until apparent failure is observed. The validity of the ultimate and yield load estimation method and load caculated from the settlement criterion is investigated through comparison with the measured data. In addition, a new procedure to estimate allowable load and safety factor is proposed. Additional data from field static load tests, such as those incorporated in this study, are needed to more reliably apply the proposed method in design practice.

Safety diagnosis was conducted to evaluate the long-term stability evaluation of power transmission tower of which deformation of the upper structural elements occurred. To assess the cause of the structural deformation, field investigation including BIPS, down-hole test, concrete pile coring and finite element analysis were carried out. From these studies, the major cause of deformation was found due to the heavily fractured layer and weathered soil topography at the pile tip area. The cement-milk grouting method was proposed to reinforce these weak zone around the pile tip area. Also, the increase of cross-section and stiffness for steel members of upper tower structures was suggested. Instrumental monitoring was proposed as well to verify reinforcing effect.

The objective of this study is firstly to frame up the seismic safety of rock-fill dams. It is necessary to analyze seismic response and evaluate seismic performance of rock-fill dams during earthquake. In this study, seismic damage and dynamic analysis of rock-fill dams using structural analysis package such as FLAC were performed. According detailed analysis, the vibration through the dam structure seems to be very critical depending on the shape of the dams. For more precise evaluation of seismic fragility of rock-fill dams, further research is still needed.

Among soft ground treatment methods with granular soil used in domestic, the sand compaction pile method has been utilized greatly, but, as a result of exhaustion of sand and increase of unit cost, a necessity of an alternative method is suggested. In this study, the static load tests for group crushed-stone compaction piles which were constructed at in-situ site were performed. Pile diameter was 700mm and area of loading plates were changed. The static load tests of single and group piles were performed for area replacement ratio of 20, 30 and 40%. Based on test results, bearing capacity of group crushed-stone compaction pile were estimated. The more both single pile and group pile increase, the more yield bearing capacity tended to increase. Also, the yield bearing capacity of a group pile is about 50% less than the yield bearing capacity of a single pile. If the ground reinforced with the crushed-stone compaction pile is replacement ratio of
$20{\sim}40%$ , RIYB of both single pile and group pile increases qualitative tendency of linear more than original ground -
A methodology is developed to evaluate the vulnerability of bridge piers to scour and to help establish effective disaster measures, taking into account the locality and scour characteristics in Korea. Based on the bearing capacity of bridge foundation-ground integrating system changed by scour, this methodology is able to prioritize bridge foundations reflecting on the geotechnical factors as well as hydraulic ones. The bridge foundation vulnerability to scour is categorized into 7 groups considering the concise information of the bridge foundation-ground integrating system. A case study of implementing this method which includes the analysis of the scour depth and evaluation, and categorizing the scour vulnerability of bridge foundation is presented.

In case of the national roads which is opened in the past, there are carried out the expansion and improvement for enlargement of the traffic demand by industrial development and safety road operation to narrow of road width and serious change of the road alignment with effect of topography and graphical features of a mountain. A protection method using vegetation in the cut-slope has been constructed for harmony of ambient environment after cutting the slope recently. But it requires a study because the surface lose and the failure have been occurred in the large cut-slope which is covered by vegetation. In this study it was presented a countermeasure and examined a stability of contained uncertainty in the cut-slope according to the failure example of the cut-slope which is covered by vegetation. The additional research will be necessary against the development of the investigation technique which executes the stability investigation of the cut-slope which is covered by vegetation.

Cut slopes are collapsed in Korea every year. Cut slope collapses cause a loss of lives and assets. Many researchers make clear collapse factor of cut lope. Fresh rock weathered through reaction undergroundwater and groundwater. During weathering process, weathered minerals are created. Weathered minerals are analysed by X-ray diffraction meter. X-ray diffraction meter make possible quantity assessment of degree of weathering and indicator of potential collapse possibilities. This paper discuss possibilities of cut slope dangerous with analysis of weathered minerals of cut slope.

The purpose of this study is the infiltration characteristics of soil cut-slope by rainfall. Stability analysis of soil cut-slopes has been conducted by limit equilibrium method on Seep/w and finite element method on Slope/w. Result is same as following. First. the hour when seepage line and groundwater in contact is proportionate from rainfall rate condition and upper natural slope gradient condition which is identical. Second, when seepage line and groundwater is contact, seepage line moves gradually at soil cut-slope surface. Finally, seepage line is formed similarly with soil cut-slope gradient. Third, when rainfall is ended, from the recording upper natural slope where the hour will pass it is stabilized

Therefore ground reinforcement for slope stabilization has been increasingly used during the past few decades with a wide variety of techniques including soil nailing, rock bolt, anchor and different types. But in some cases which applied slope reinforcement construction by badness or mistake. So this paper is the study of construction badness for slope reinforcement.

The demand of tunnels has been increased for the linear improvement of general national highway, and road construction and/or enlargement in Korea. Also, the collapses of tunnel portal slope have been increased in recent due to heavy rain caused by global warming. Therefore, it has been risen the requirement of system for the stability of tunnel portal slope in Korea as well as all over the world. The objective of this research is to develop an effective maintenance system for supervising the tunnel portal slope. This paper is a basic proposal to execute a survey on the current status and state of the tunnel portal slopes that were already installed along general national highways.

In this study, the Discrete Element Code was applied to the analysis of falling rock blocks. The simulation was performed using the PFC2D computer code. Falling rock blocks should be applied as additional force to each others. The force affect the motion of falling rock blocks. This was used to find out the behavior of each blocks. This study revealed that the DEM can successfully capture the behavior of falling rock blocks.

As a result of industrial advancement and land development, a number of highway slopes have been gradually formed and numerous problems related to their stability have been frequently caused. Generally, major factors for rock slope stability are lithology, slope inclination, slope height, degree of weathering, precipitation, condition of groundwater and so onl. Many complex factors are mostly involved in the collapse of rock slopes. In this study, a database for 94 collapsed Jungang highway slopes were set up using GIS program through literature search, site investigation, geological map and Korea tectonic province map. The analyses for the collapsed factor including sort of rock(by origin), tectonic province, highway direction, slope gradient and direction, degree of weathering, slope height were carried.

In this study, the progressive failure and creep of the traditional ground anchor structure were decreased and a new ground anchor that can attain the required pull-out resistance even in soft sandy soils with low confining pressure was developed. Ground anchors are classified depending on the kind of stress the grout is subjected. If the grout material is subjected to tension then it is classified as tension anchor while when the grout material is subjected to compression it is classified as compression anchor. The ground anchor that possesses both the tension and compression mechanism mentioned above is known as composition anchor. It is the objective of this study to develope this type of composition anchor. The structure of the newly developed ground anchor was presented. Pull-out test in different types of soil and the behaviour during Pull-out test was also presented.

Also, function of rockfall prevention net depend on setting needle and the wire net and perpendicular and horizontal wire rope are fixed by setting needle. when unreasonable load is offered setting needle, rockfall prevention net can lose the function and happen continuous falling off of rockfall prevention net. Because rockfall prevention net have a such structural defect, improvement had been required in reply. So in this paper, spot application of Rock Bolt & Net Connection method and falling rock support ability are estimated by numerical analysis. As a result, when Rock Bolt & Net Connection Method is applied to cutting slope, decreases of stress and displacement is examined than current rockfall prevention net.

Stability analyses on the 17 railroad cut-off soil slopes were carried out. The influences of rainfall infiltration on the slope stabilities were taken into account by seepage analyses using finite element method and by assuming ground water tables to be located adjacent to soil surface. The validity of those analyses were evaluated by comparing the slope failure characteristics between analysis results and the past failure records. The analyses were not appropriate to estimate the failure surface and the method considering only the increase of pore-water pressure (reduction of matric suction) as the influence of rainfall cannot appropriately estimate the surficial failures that occurred most of the cut-off soil slopes. For the better estimation of the surficial failure, the influence of water flows over slope surface which erode soil mass and/or increase driving force, should be evaluated and considered.

Anchor system is widely used in construction works to support retaining structures. The compression anchor is characterized by excellent mechanism of pullout resistance, as well as less probability of progressive failure than a tension anchor. This paper presents the mechanical characteristics of a newly developed compression anchor(JR-2000). Field tests were performed to investigate characteristics of the pullout resistance of compression anchor.

In this study, a computer program to predict the behavior of laterally loaded single pile and pile groups was developed by using a beam-column analysis in which the soils are modeled as nonlinear springs by a family of p-y curves for subgrade modulus. The special attention was given to the lateral displacement of a single pile and pile groups due to the soil condition and the cap rigidity. The analysis considering group effect was carried out for
$2\;{\times}\;2\;and\;3\;{\times}\;3$ pile groups with the pile spacing 3.0B, 4.0B and 5.0B. Based on the results obtained, it is found that the overall distributions of deflection, slope, moment, and shear force in a single pile give a reasonable results irrespective of cap connectivity conditions. It is also found that even though there are some deviations in deflection prediction compared with the observed ones, the prediction by present analysis simulates much better the general trend observed by the centrifuge tests than the numerical solution predicted by PIGLET. -
Slope stability analyses have been carried out to investigate surcharge loading effects. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) involves the stress-strain behaviour of soils achieving reasonably accurate and useful results of slope stability analysis. Therefore, in this study, one of well known FEA programs, SIGMA/W, has been used to do slope stability analyses with respect to various upper slope angles and surcharge loadings. Factor of Safety(FS) exponentially decreases and significantly good correlation with the increased slope angle for upper slopes. As the surcharge loading increases from 10 t/m to 90 t/m for nail-reinforced slopes, the FS in fully saturated condition decreases from 42% to 47% and from 17% to 25% for relatively low and high strength of soils, respectively, than in dry condition.

The whole death by disaster is totalized to 1,515 person from 1993 to 2004 year in our country. In this section life damages by landslide is totalized 357 people(about 24% of whole life damage). About 36 people are died by landslide(such as cutting area failure every year). Kangwon-do need a lot of interests and prevention because dangerous area that landslide occurrence is more than other area at summer localized downpour or thawing season and there is landslide occurrence possibility area more than other area. Kangwon-do area is higher than other area in natural disaster incidence and damage scale because topography and a lot of rainfalls by summer localized in Kangwon-Do than other area. In this study, dangerous area of landslide occurrence possibility is analyzed and compared Kangwon-Do with other areas in our country. as a result, every year we have experienced landslide occurrence and natural disaster. accordingly, we urgently need to prevent landslide occurrence and natural disaster by analy-zed source about landslide occurrence and condition of disaster in Kangwon-Do and suitable engineering method and construction work.

Studied accuracy and practical use possibility of joint measurement that using 3D laser scanner to rock slope. Measured joint of Rock slope and comparison applied 3 dimension laser scanner and clinometer. 3D laser scanning system preserves on computer calculating to 3 dimension coordinate scaning laser to object. and according to laser measurement method of interior, produce correct vector value from charge-coupled device(CCD) or laser reciver and telegram register and time measuring equipment. Create of object x, y, z point coordinates to 3 dimension space of computer. Such 3 dimension point datum (Point Clouds) forms relocate position informations that exist to practical space to computer space. Practical numerical values related between each other. Compared joint distribution and direction that measured by laser scanner and clinometer. By the result, Distribution of joint projected almost equally. Could get more joint datas by measurement of 3 dimension scanner than measured by clinometer. Therefore, There is effect that objectification of rock slope investigation data, shortening of investigation periods, investigation reduction of cost. could know that it is very effective method in joint measuring.

This study examined 233 cut slopes in Gyeongnam region; evaluated hazards and slope conditions involved in the slope; and determined the priority order for reinforcement. The conclusions are summarized in the following. (1) The slopes that need reinforcement or maintenance are 153, accounting for 65.6% of the entire slopes. Slopes with a length of
$0{\sim}200m$ account for 70.9%; slopes with a height of$10{\sim}20m$ account for over 50%. (2) Slopes with slope of more than 1:0.5 account for 70.9% of the entire slopes. The steepness of the slope is owing to more rock slopes than soil slopes. (3) The percentages of rock slopes, soil slopes, complex slopes mixed with rocks and soil, and slopes comprised of igneous rocks are 54.4%, 24.9%, 20.7%, and 54.1%, respectively. (4) In the rock area occurred cave-in, plain failure, wedge failure, and overturning failure, in order. Slopes with volcanic rocks are the most unstable, while sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks are relatively stable. (5) When the slope height is over 20m, low grade slopes are more than 80%; leading to the conclusion that the higher the slope height is, the more unstable the slope is. -
This study examined a case of collapse and reinforcement of the colluvial deposit slope in Kyeongnam Geoje Area. The reason for the collapse was found first in the reduction of the resistant force due to slope-cut for constructing retaining walls. This decreased the resistant force against sliding, which enabled precipitation during the rainy period to seep into the ground in the upper colluvium, resulting in increase in porewater pressure. This leads to decreased shear strength and increased sliding force, which ultimately caused the collapse of the slope. For the long-term stability, methods attained for stability reinforcement are summarized in the following table.

This paper describes the effect of acid rock drainage(ARD) produced from the cut slope on the slope structures. Acid rock drainage is originated from a rock quarry located in coal mine zone and mineralization belt of Chosen Supergroup and Ogcheon group, andesite with the pyrite, and acid sulfate soils of Tertiary in Korea. The cut slope, where acid rock drainage comes out, almost has been constructed by shotcrete and planting works. According to the field observation results, in most cases, the acid rock drainage has an adverse effect on slope structures. The shotcrete, anchors and rock bolts produced corrosive action, and bad germination and growth diseases of covering plants of the slope planting construction due to ARD.

A lot of landslides were occurred in Gangnung, Macheon and Geochang areas by Typhoons such as RUSA(2002) and MEAMI(2003). Soil properties of these areas are investigated regarding geological conditions in this study. The shallow plane failure were occurred in Gangnung and Geochang areas, whereas the deep circle failure were occurred in Macheon area. The matrix in Gangnung and Geochang areas was composed of Granite, and the matrix in Macheon area was composed of Gabbro. The disturbed and undisturbed soils were sampled in these areas. As the results of laboratory tests using sampled soils, the coefficient of permeability in Granite region is lower than that in Gabbro region. In the cases that the silt and clay contents are included less than 4% for the soils of Granite region and less than 7% for the soils of Gabbro region, the coefficients of permeability are rapidly increased for both soils. In addition, the simple equations for predicting the coefficients of permeability are proposed using the effective particle size and the silt and clay contents according to geological condition.

Stability of embankment is influenced on landfill condition, permeability, shear strength and soil engineering propensity and so on, and need examination in reply because is different according to change of soil property of foundation ground and permeability condition. Analyzed seepage behaviour by finite element method for embankment, and change permeability of base to analyze effect that permeability of ground water table formation before embankment and analyze seepage behaviour to typical embankment in this research. In the case of permeability of foundation ground is 10 more than landfill permeability, rise of groundwater table was changed slightly. Pore water pressure was decreased slowly in landfill after rainfall. The effect of permeability of foundation ground was effected in change of pore water pressure. For permeability of foundation ground is 10 more than landfill, stability of road landfill was small changed during rainfall. But in the case of permeability of base soil similar to landfill permeability, road landfill stability was large decreased during rainfall.

The settlement of embankment on soft clay includes shear settlement due to shear deformation. Even though the consolidation settlement is not related to lateral displacement, but shear settlement makes the embankment unstable because it deforms ground and decreases the ground strength. In order to determine the shear deformation behaviour during embankment construction, 3 cases (1B, 2B, and 3B) of rapid undrained loading tests on soft clays were performed. Shear settlement is consist of elastic settlement, plastic settlement and viscous settlement. Elastic settlement isn't considered because the range is small, therefore the first is the range of plastic displacement, and the second is that of viscous displacement in the displacement-time curve for each loading stage. After determining that the change in the inclination of the viscous displacement range is larger than in the plastic displacement range after the ground failure occurs for the loading stage, the stability management methods were suggested considering that it is hard to divide the plastic displacement range and the viscous displacement range. The stability management method was based on the ratio of the plastic displacement range's inclination and the viscous displacement range's inclination. A stability management method based on the ratio of the total inclination for each loading stage compared to the whole inclination in the initial loading stage was also recommended.

The purpose of this paper is to study on the construction of roadbed with environmental friendly soil amendment agent and reinforced fiber. The special amendment agent and fiber used in this study has a function of soil-cement-agent solidification and reinforcement. A series of laboratory experiments including unconfined compressive strength, tensile strength, compaction test were carried out to investigate the physical and mechanical characteristics of roadbed treated by solidifying agent and fiber. The results of this research showed that the roadbed using poor soil could be efficiently constructed by treatment of this amendment agent and fiber.

In this study a series of tests(bench scale test) are carried out for increasing in strength of clayey soil by EK-Injection method. In addition, the effects of strength increase in the treated sample are measured by operating the vane shear test device during 25 days at 5 days intervals in order to estimate the effect of ground improvement caused by diffusion. The test results show that the strength increase was developed approximately double to 7 times in comparison to initial shear strength, and outstanding strength increase was created as much as 7 times while injecting the sodium silicate and phosphoric acid in anolyte and catholyte. In addition, the measured shear strength with the influence of diffusion and reduction of water-content had a tendency to converge in constant value in proportion to elapsed time. As a result of this study, strength increment developed by the influence of EK-Injection and diffusion rather than the reduction of water-content were high as 1000% on average

In this study, to observe aging effect of undrained shear behavior for Nak-Dong River sand, undrained static and cyclic triaxial tests were performed with changing relative density (
$D_r$ ), consolidation stress ratio($K_c$ ) and consolidation time. As a result of the test, the modulus of elasticity to all samples estimated within elastic zone by the micro strain of about 0.05% in case of static shear behavior increased with the lapse of consolidation time significantly, so aging effect was shown largely. Also strength of phase transformation point(S_{PT}$ ) and strength of critical stress ratio point($S_{CSR}$ ) increased with the lapse of consolidation time. Undrained cyclic shear strength($R_f$ ) obtained from the failure strain 5% increased in proportion to relative density($D_r$ ) and initial static shear stress($q_{st}$ ),$R_f$ of consolidated sample for 1,000 minutes increased about 10.6% compared to that for 10 minutes at the loose sand, and$R_f$ increased about 7.0% at the medium sand. In situ application range of$R_f$ to the magnitude of earthquake for Nak-Dong River sand was proposed by using a increasing rate of$R_f$ as being aging effect shown from this test result. -
In this study, we intended to compare and examine several settlement management methods by analyzing measurement results of a site of the industrial complex at
${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ province. We predicted and analyzed the amount of final settlement by using generally used final settlement methods as like Hyperbola method, Hoshino methods and Asaoka method. And then, We compared the predicted results with that of measurement. On the basis of comparison of the three methods, Hyperbola method was the most convenient and accurate method of the three methods and if a sufficient time was given enough after embankment construction, the use of Hoshino method was possible. In the case of the Asaoka methods, it was possible to know that it had an approaching tendency to the measured one with increasing time interval spent on analysis. Therefore, in order to predict settlement behavior more accurately it is needed to understand their advantages and shortcomings sufficiently and pay attention to application to the real site. -
Recently, the lateral displacement of the passive piles which installed under the revetment on soft ground is very important during the land reclamation work along the coastal line. The revetment on the soft clay develops the lateral displacement of the ground when the revetment loading is exceeded a certain limit. The lateral displacement of ground causes an excessive deformation of under structure itself and develops lateral earth pressure against the pile foundation as well. Especially passive piles subjected to lateral earth pressures are likely to have excessive horizontal displacement and large bending moment, which induces structural failure of pile foundation and harmful effects on superstructure. The subject of study is to investigate the later displacement of pile foundation during the construction of container terminal at the south port of Incheon. Actual field measurement data and finite element method(FEM) by AFFIMEX Ver 3.4 were used to analyze the displacement of pile and the vertical settlement of soft ground. This analysis was carried out at each sequence of construction work.

In this study, model tests of soft silt soils(ML) and silt soils was polluted with wastewater and waste oil from factories(
$ML_p$ ). Distribution of displacement, bearing capacity comparing the test results with existing theoretical expressions and analyzing the test results, the following conclusions were obtained. It was found out that in soft silt soils the relationship of critical surcharge and undrained cohesion is$q_{cr}=4.14C_u$ and polluted silt soils$ML_p$ those are$q_{cr}=1.78C_u$ , respectively and the relationship of ultimate capacities$q_{ult}=9.53C_u$ and undrained cohesion in polluted silt soils are$q_{ult}=4.39C_u$ . Critical surcharge and ultimate capacity is less in polluted silt soils than in soft silt soils. -

Recently, Hyperbolic method, Hoshino method and Asaoka method are used mostly in prediction of final settlement and this paper, Comparing a result of Final settlement, used to Artificial Neural Network. The structure of Dynamic Artificial Neural Network which predicted Final settlement, has application to Young_Jong Island other site, If new investigation data will be added. Also, It is expected to save measuring_system cost in soft ground. -
In this paper, the effect on the forced replacement depth of the revetment in soft soil with inter sand layer is analyzed by model test. In the result, the forced replacement occur in 60 second from filling the embankment material. The shape of the forced replacement depth is like to punching shape. Then, in case of thin inter sand layer and near the embankment, the forced replacement depth of inter sand layer case is more than only clayed soil case.

The stress concentration ratio in accordance with area replacement ratios were considered as core elements of design. However, the stress concentration ratio will be vary depends on progress of consolidation in clay ground. And, since it is not sure to know the affecting factors accurately, the value is decided based on field experiences. To use SCP method more effective and correspond to soil improvement, the decision on proper area replacement ratio through the exact stress concentration ratio is very important. Accordingly, a numerical analysis on influence of various factors that needed to make rational designing guide for decision of proper area replacement ratio to stress concentration ratio was executed in this study.

Because general laboratory tests for sand compaction pile method including unit-cell test device have fixed outside diameter, as area replacement ratio increase, diameter of sand pile increase. These condition can bring about overestimation of stiffness of composite ground. In addition, existing large soil box which consist of bellows type loading plate can occur serious mistake in checking the amount of drained water because there are additional drainage along the inside wall in device. Overcoming these shortcoming, this paper developed modified large scale soil box consist of piston type load plate. In this study, using this device, series of modified large scale soil box tests were performed, and investigated the settlement and stress transportation characteristics with area replacement ratio in sand compaction pile method.

In this study, a series of laboratory tests based on 'Unit-cell concept' are performed to investigate improvement characteristics of clay ground in sand compaction pile method. Settlement reduction characteristics of composite ground and improvement characteristics of clay part could be qualified. In these procedure, the new strain-compression index(
$C_{\epsilon}$ ) of composite ground are adopted to show compressibility of composite ground according to the area replacement ratio, which is similar to the compression index($C_c$ ) in pure clay ground. Also, using normalization of reduction of water content in composite ground to the initial water content, improvement characteristics of clay part are investigated. -
In this paper, the measured results obtained from the ground improved by SCP method at quay-wall caisson foundation in Pusan New Port 1-1 phase are analyzed and then compared with the values predicted by a consolidation theory. The measured settlement is generally smaller than the predicted settlement. For consolidation velocity, the measured velocity is later than the predicted value. According to the execution of caisson placing phases, the predicted value shows higher settlement than the measured one with time being.

U.J.S.(Ultra Jetting System) is a new ground improvement method registered as a Utility Model No.0205798, which has fundamentally improved the existing jetting method of J.S.P.(Jumbo Special Pattern System). In this study, the uniaxial compressive strengths of improved soil-grout structures by U.J.S. and J.S.P. which have been conducted on the construction site are compared. Also, the differences between the U.J.S. and J.S.P. are analyzed by considering the role of the auger bit, the injection distance measured from the axis of boring tubes, and angle of injection measured from the horizontal. The specimens of soil-grout structures are taken from the improved soils by using the U.J.S. and J.S.P. The uniaxial tests for the samples are conducted after the curing period of 28 days. The uniaxial compressive strengths and the coefficients of elasticity of surface and distance from the axis of boring. This study shows that the mean strength of the improved structure by J.S.P. is 1.9 times greater than by J.S.P.

Shell-sand mixtures are commonly used for reclamation projects. This study presented the engineering properties of shell-sand mixtures. Shell shows higher specific gravities and less compressibilities than quartz sand. From large shear box tests, it can be seen that the shear strength increased with the increase of shell mixtures. At 30% shell mixtures showed about 6 increase in shear friction angle.

Because depth of deposit is deeper as well as compressibility is very larger than the other regions in Korea, behaviour of settlement at Nak-Dong river estuarine causes hot issue at ground improvement. Defined properties for design differ from measurement. Therefore it affects cost of construction. This study presents design standard to engineers as it defined properties of compressibility at Jangyu Area of Nak-Dong river estuarine. To search value of representation for region, back analysis was performed using the measurement. To verify that, the measurement of recently designed site was confirmed, and the cost of construction with properties of consolidation was calculated.

This study is an experiment paper about the ground improvement material which using the waste residual(slag and paper fly ash) by fire. we are research to concern according to the soil to mix the ground improvement material at show strength effectiveness. Also, we can expect a long time strength increase effectiveness as reduce the dryness contraction. They are distinguished to the clay of the reclamation ground and silty sand soil. We examined around an uniaxial compress test and scanning electron microscopy. The uniaxial stress increases according to the increase of the mixed ratio of ground improvement material and the water contents have been reduced the strength value. A clay's improvement effectiveness is big but in the silty sand soil to express small effectiveness. A ground improvement material mixing of the quantity to write can not expect the effect of Ettringite.

Recently, due to lack of sand suppy, the cost of sand has increase. Therefore, alternative materials are needed. So, in this study the Crush Stone Compaction Pile used in America and Europe has been compared and analyzed Sand Compaction Pile used in Korea. Tests were performed at various sizes of Crush Stone and replacement ratio. Frist, it was compared and analyzed with low and high replacement ratio with the same size of crush stone. Second, it was compared and analyzed with different size of crush stone at constant replacement ratio. The result of these tests were compared with sand of the same replacement ratio. Here, the properties that were comares and analyzed are the ultimate bearing capacity and quantity of ground upheaval.

After clay particles have been sediment isotropically, the clay deposits have been consolidated under
$K_0$ -stress system. Therefore, in order to predict the behavior in-situ of normally consolidated clays, the laboratory test should be enforced under$K_0$ -stress system and should obtain the characteristics of normally consolidated clays. And relationship of stress-strain on clay is effected on not only method of consolidation but also characteristic of visco-plastic behavior. Saturated clay is effected more this trend. So, rate of strain is considered to understand exact stress-strain relationship. In this study, the series of undrained triaxial compression tests were preformed on remolded specimens which was made by slurry of clay, consolidated under$K_0$ -stress systems. And the undrained triaxial compression test were preformed to examine behavior of stress-strain relationship due to rate of shear strain relationship due to rate of shear strain. -
The purpose of this study is the understanding to changes in the characteristic of soil structure and classification, atterberg limits, undrained shear strength and consolidation of clayey soil dependent on pH of soil pore water. A series of tests including consistency tests, uniaxial compressive tests, vane tests and oedometer tests are performed on. The test results indicated that pH changes in the soil pH resulted in changes in the soil structure and classification, stress-strain behavior. Specially, when pH is conditioned to 7, liquid limit, undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure are the largest.

In evaluating the stability of underground structures and designing prevention methods against the lateral flow, it is necessary to predict the amount and the distribution of the lateral earth pressure acting on these retaining structures. However, because the lateral deformation of real ground is a very complex phenomenon influenced by interaction between volumetric deformation bringing an increase of stability of ground and shear deformation causing failure of ground, any appropriate methods for estimating the lateral earth pressure in consideration of the geotechnical properties of ground and the construction conditions in embankment have not been developed as yet. Therefore, a prediction method, which considers effects of a construction speed of embankment, using the Boussinesq's solution based on the elasticity theory without using complex numerical analyses such as finite element analyses is proposed in this research.

다짐화강풍화토의 강도와 변형특성을 조사하기 위하여 불포화배수 삼축압축실험을 실시하였다. 본 실험을 위하여 야마구치현의 시모네세키에서 화강풍화토를 구하였으며 주응력방향과 다짐방향을 0, 45, 90도의 세가지 방향성을 갖도록 하였다. 등방압축시 발생하는 압축변형률은 다짐각도에 따라 크게 영향을 받는다. 이차압축시의 변형거동에 관한 시간의존성은 다짐각도와 관계가 없다. 다짐각도가 압축강도와 변형에 미치는 영향은 특히 낮은 구속압력시에 크다. 다짐각도가 다르다 하더라도 다일러탄시 비율은 다일러턴시로 인한 강도증가와 상관하여 변화한다. 따라서 다짐풍화토는 초기 비등방성 조직을 갖고 있는 모래와 같이 비등방성 역학적 성질을 갖는다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to establish a proper criterion for the constant rate of loading consolidation(CRLC) test which is a kind of the continuous loading consolidation(CLC) and widely used as alternative methods to the incremental loading consolidation(ILC)test. With those results, the preconsolidation pressure estimated by the CRLC test turned out to be comparatively larger than that of the ILC test, and it is increased in proportion to the applied loading rates. However, the compression index in the CRLC test is less influenced on by the loading rates. The coefficient of consolidation and permeability in the CRLC test are dependent on excess pore pressure ratio mainly. In other words, if the pore pressure ratios are too low, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become smaller than those of the ILC test. On the other hand, if the excess pore pressure ratios are too high, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become so larger than those of the ILC test. Therefore, loading rates should be carefully determined to generate proper excess pore pressure ratio inside the soil specimen. From this study, good results are obtained from the CRLC test if the excess pore pressure ratios were in the range of 2.5 to 6.0 %, performed with loading rates between 0.0015 and 0.005
$kgf/cm^2/min$ . -
1990년 이래 낙동강 하구 서쪽지역인 서부산과 인근 지역에서는 대단위 지반조성공사가 수행되었다. 이 지역에서는 부산점토라고 명명된 점성토가 20-70m의 두께로 상당히 두텁게 형성되어있다. 최근에 들어 정교한 지반조사가 수행됨에 따라 이 지역의 점토에 대한 공학적 특성이 효과적으로 밝혀졌지만, 점토의 특성을 면밀히 규명하기 위해서는 여전히 많은 과제가 남아있다. 본 논문에서는 부산신항 지역에서 점토에 대하여 다양한 방법으로 투수계수를 구하여 투수특성을 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 수평 및 연직방향의 배수에 의한 일정변형률(CRS) 압밀실험, 표준압밀실험 및 압밀 중에 변수위 투수실험이 실내실험으로 이루어 졌으며, 현장실험으로 CPTU에 의한 소산실험 및 Casagrande형 피에조미터에 의한 소산실험이 실시되었다.이들 결과를 서로 비교하여 합리적인 실험결과를 분석하며, 이점토에 대한 깊이별 투수계수 및 투수 이방성을 규명하고자 하였다.

In soft ground, consolidation settlement is mainly consider. The primary consolidation settlement which is the time when the excess pore water pressure is completely dispersed and the secondary consolidation settlement which follows. Recently as the depth of consolidation layer increases the consideration of not only the primary consolidation settlement but also of the secondary consolidation settlement becomes a very important element. But up to the present there were only a few in-depth study of the secondary consolidation settlement performed. At present there are a lot of methods available when it comes to the improvement of soft soil. In this study, Preloading Method which is the most commonly used soft soil improvement method locally was used in order to investigate the method for the reduction of secondary consolidation settlement. The objective of this study is to determine the amount of preloading required to reduce secondary consolidation settlement and to determine whether secondary consolidation settlement using standard consolidation test.

The stability of embankment on the soft ground has included problems on stabilities of embanked body and soft soil, which related with vertical displacement and lateral movement of the soft ground especially. The judge methods for the potentialities of lateral movement have been used in order to stabilization assessment during and after construction of the embankment. In this study, the judge methods on the improved soft ground suggested, which compared with exist judge methods on lateral movement. It is due to recent trend using embanked structures on the soft ground most of improved.

In this study, a specification for the filter system of plastic board drain using in korea. When PBDs was installed in the soft ground, bridging, blocking, blinding and clogging phenomena could be appeared near the PBD. Especially, clogging phenomena near the filter of PBD is very important factor to determine the life span of the vertical drainage system. Therefore, in this study, we proposed the specification on the filter of PBD considering the size of soil particle. To verify the proposed specification, model tests were conducted by using filter seepage tester. From the model test, newly proposed specification which considered the size of soil particle maintained the ability of seepage of the filter system of PBD.

RAP(rammed aggregate pier) method which is intermediate foundation of deep and shallow foundation is used to improve the ground with high compaction energy. This method is widely spread around the world, but there are few examples and systemic researches for failure mechanism and bearing capacity of this method are not organized yet. In this paper, soil laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate the applicability of RAP method as the foundation of a structure. And the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of RAP method were studied with respect to various relative densities(35%, 65%, 90%), diameters(45mm, 60mm) and lengths(20cm, 30cm, 40cm). As results, stress concentration ratio decreased as diameter of RAP was increasing or length of RAP was decreased or relative density was decreased. however these results were not always constant. because systematic interaction between relative density and diameter and length of RAP can affect stress concentration ratio, more studies on stress concentration ratio are needed throughout laboratory and field tests.

In this study, seismic safety of CFRD(Concrete-Face Rockfill Dam) type "D" dam in operation is evaluated from the results of 1-g shaking table test using similitude laws. Model dam is made by similitude law considering the grain size of prototype dam component. After the model dam is impounded to the normal water level(N.W.L), it is excited by artificial earthquake wave corresponding to standard design respond spectrum of the "D" dam site. Displacement response behavior of the dam is examined through the measurement of vertical and horizontal displacement of dam crest. Also, amplification characteristics of acceleration with dam height is examined through the measurement of acceleration with dam height. Finally, the purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic safety of "D" dam in operation. From the results of acceleration measurement, it was found that acceleration of dam crest was amplified about 1.52 times compared to the acceleration of dam bottom and amplification phenomenon is outstanding at three quarters of dam height from the bottom of dam. From the analysis of displacement behavior, it was estimated that vertical displacement of prototype dam is 6.8cm (0.1% of dam height) and horizontal displacement 12.3cm(0.2% of dam height). These percentages is much lower than 1% of dam height(general stability criteria). Therefore, it was concluded that seismic stability of "D" dam against an estimated earthquake is guaranteed.

The effects of mean particle size and uniformity coefficient of dredged soils to the liquefaction resistance strength and dynamic characteristics are experimentally studied in this paper. Representative 4 mean particle sizes and 3 uniformity coefficients were selected and 12 representative particle size distribution curves which have different mean particle sizes and uniformity coefficients, were artificially manufactured using the real dredged river soil. Cyclic triaxial tests and torsional shear tests were carried out to analyze the effect of mean particle size and uniformity coefficient to the liquefaction resistance strength and dynamic characteristics of soils.

Seismic motion amplification owing to the input motion level at bedrock is one of the important topics to understand various geomaterials behavior. The extremely valuable borehole records at Port Island were obtained during the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake and also before and after the main event. In this study, the seismic motion amplification at the soft reclaimed ground was discussed. Comparison of measured records with numerical simulation results were made with focus on seismic motion amplification characteristics at the soft reclaimed ground.

The objective of this study was to identify the effect of the degree of saturation on the resilient modulus of cohesive soils as subgrade. Six representative cohesive soils representing A-4, A-6, and A-7-6 soil types collected from road construction sites across Ohio, were tested in the laboratory to determine their basic engineering properties. Resilient modulus tests were conducted on unsaturated cohesive soils at optimum moisture content, and samples compacted to optimum conditions but allowed to fully saturate. The subgrade compacted at optimum moisture content may be fully saturated due to seasonal change. Laboratory tests on fully saturated cohesive soils showed that the resilient modulus of saturated soils decreased to less than half that of soil specimens tested at optimum moisture content. The reduction of resilient modulus would possibly be caused by the buildup of pore water pressure. In resilient modulus testing performed in this study on saturated samples, pore water pressure increases were observed. Pore water pressure and residual pore water pressure gradually increased with an increase in deviator stress.

This work reports results of our study on the dynamic responses of the buried pipelines both along the axial and the transverse directions under various boundary end conditions. We have considered three cases, i.e., the free ends, the fixed ends, and the fixed-free ends. We have studied the seismic responses of the buried pipelines with the various boundary end conditions both along the axial and the transverse direction. We have considered three cases, i.e., the free ends, the fixed ends, and the fixed-free ends for the axial direction, and three more cases including the guided ends, the simply supported ends, and the supported-guided ends for the transverse direction. The buried pipelines are modeled as beams on elastic foundation while the seismic waves as a ground displacement in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The natural frequency and its mode, and the effect of parameters have been interpreted in terms of free vibration. The natural frequency varies most significantly by the soil stiffness and the length of the buried pipelines in the case of free vibration, which increases with increasing soil stiffness and decreases with increasing length of the buried pipeline. Such a behavior appears most prominently along the axial rather than the transverse direction of the buried pipelines. The resulting frequencies and the mode shapes obtained from the free vibration for the various boundary end conditions of the pipelines have been utilized to derive the mathematical formulae for the displacements and the strains along the axial direction, and the displacements and the bending strains along the transverse direction in case of the forced vibration. The negligibly small difference of 6.2% between our result and that of Ogawa et. al. (2001) for the axial strain with a one second period confirms the accuracy of our approach in this study.

In the present study, a series of laboratory tests with sands of different silt contents, are conducted and methods to assess non-linear behaviors based on in-situ test results are proposed. Modified hyperbolic stress-strain model is used to analyze non-linearity of silty sands in terms of non-linear degradation parameters f and g as a function of silt contents and relative density
$D_R$ . Stress-strain relationship results were obtained from a series of triaxial tests on sands containing different amounts of silt. Initial shear modulus which was applied to normalize modulus degradation of silty sands were determined based on the resonant column test results. From the laboratory test results, it was observed that, as the relative density increases, values of f decrease and those of g increase. Cone resistance$q_c$ for silty soil condition used in the triaxial tests were estimated based on the cavity expansion analysis. A suggestion to make an estimation of degradation parameters f and g as a function of fine contents is addressed in terms of cone resistance$q_c$ . -
This paper describes on the volume change of Sewage Dredged Soils by using laboratory test and volumetric change test. The tremendous change of Moisture Content occured in the Sewage Dredged Soils during the Elapsed Time. The Unit Weight increases during the normally shrinkage limit void ratio and then the unit weight decrease. A volume of Sewage Dredged Soils according to the moisture content is a difference maximum 2.5 times. And there is the difference 3.5 times according to the change of unit weight. Therefore, the moisture content and unit weight computation are very important for the computation on the volume of Sewage Drdeged Soils.

Using KUCCS, which enables real-time monitoring and controlling, the various boundary condition and in-situ field stress condition was simulated, to derive the correlation among
${{\sigma}_v}'-Dr-N$ in domestic sandy soils. Soil specimens, having various relative density and confined stress, were formulated to evaluate N-value from the SPT. and Pile Driving Analyzer, PDA, was employed as a measuring device for the energy transfer efficiency in the rod. From the quantitative analysis of N-value, the correlating equation,$N_{60}/{D_r}^2=16.35+14.45{{\sigma}_v}'$ was obtained on the basis of Skempton's method(1986). More reliable soil parameters can be obtained from the N-value by using this study which considered regional characters and the correlation among${{\sigma}_v}'-Dr-N$ . -
본 논문에서는 백령도 사곶해수욕장의 지반지지력 변화를 알아보고자, 평판재하시험(이하 PBT로 표시함)을 실시하였다. 시험에서 얻어진 데이터는 최대곡률법, logP-logs법,
$P-{\triangle}s/{\triangle}(logt)$ 법을 종합적으로 분석 검토하여 결과값을 산출하였고, 시료를 채취하여 실내실험을 한 결과 통일분류법상 SP의 상태를 나타내었다. 재하시험과 실내실험의 데이터를 비교 분석한 결과, 물다짐의 상태에 따라 침하량의 차이가 2배 가까이 차이를 보였으며, 물다짐이 이루어진 곳의 침하량값이 작고, 허용지지력이 높은 것으로 산출 되었다. -

The purpose of field monitoring system in KHC-Test Road located at Joongbu-Inland Highway, is to provide the performance data for traffic and environmental loadings from pavement surface. Among them, water content reflectometers(WCR) are used to measure the volumetric water content of subgrades soils used in test roads. However, most of the WCRs are not well-calibrated based on the field conditions. In this study, the laboratory based test is performed at various density conditions to evaluate the volumetric water content in subgrade Soils with a WCR. Based on the laboratory testings, the effect of density on WCR measurement are well evaluated for predicting the volumeric water content.of subgrades soils in KHC-Test road.

The behavior of rock mass and solute(e.g. groundwater, radioactivity) flow in fractured rock can be directly influenced by joint roughness. The characteristics of joint roughness is also a main factor for the rock classification(e.g. RMR, Q system) which is usually used in tunnel design. Nevertheless, most of JRC estimation has been carried out only by the examination with the naked eye. This JRC estimation has a lack of objectivity because each investigator judges JRC by his subjective opinion. Therefore, it will be desirable that the assessment of JRC is performed by a numerical analysis which can give a quantitative value corresponding to the characteristics of a roughness curve. Meanwhile, roughness curves for joint surfaces which are observed in drill cores have been obtained only along linear profiles. Although roughness curves are measured in the same joint surface, they can frequently show diverse aspects in a standpoint of roughness characteristics. If roughness curves can be measured along the elliptical circumferences of joint surfaces from core scanning images or Televiewer images, they will certainly be more comprehensive than those measured along linear profiles for roughness characteristics of joint surfaces. This study is focus on dealing with (1) extracting automatically roughness curves from core scan image or Televiewer image, (2) improving the accuracy of quantitative assessment of JRC using fractal dimension concept.

Temperature variation according to space and time on the inner parts of engineering constructions(e.g.: dam, slope) can be a basic information for diagnosing their safety problem. In general, as constructions become superannuated, structural deformation(e.g.: cracks, defects) could be occurred by various factors. Seepage or leakage of water through these cracks or defects in old dams will directly cause temperature anomaly. Groundwater level also can be easily observed by abrupt change of temperature on the level. This study shows that the position of seepage or leakage in dam body can be detected by multi-channel temperature monitoring using thermal line sensor. For this, diverse temperature monitoring experiments for a leakage physical model were performed in the laboratory. In field application of an old dam, temperature variations for water depth and for inner parts of boreholes located at downstream slope were measured. Temperature monitoring results for a long time at the bottom of downstream slope of the dam showed the possibility that temperature monitoring can provide the synthetic information about flowing path and quantity of seepage of leakage in dam body.

In this study, crest settlement characteristics of CFRD (Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) and ECRD (Earth Cored Rockfill Dam) were analysed through the instrumentation data from representative 7 large dams in Korea. Also, We have studied the effect of valley shape and uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock to better understand the impact of the parent rock strength and the valley shape on the long term crest settlement of CFRDs. From the results, we found that the valley shape and strength of intact rock on crest settlement of dams are an important parameters. As a result, we obtained that the maximum crest settlement of CFRD is larger than that of ECRD and long term crest settlement rate per dam height of rockfill dams is less than 0.60% during service period.

This study carried out unconfined compression tests to identify deformation and strength characteristics of clay. The conclusions are presented in the following. (1) The comparison of unconfined compression strengths according to specimen disturbance showed great differences, except for a few data. (2) The comparison of
${E_{50}}'s$ according to specimen disturbance proved that the two values were similar in general. (3) The comparison of strains at the peak according to specimen disturbance showed that non-shaped specimens had been slightly more disturbed in general. (4) The comparison of$E_{50}/q_u$ also suggested that non-shaped specimens had been slightly more disturbed in general. -
As the geotechnical technologies have grown, the size of civil structures has become bigger than before, thereby requiring large-scale geotechnical testing equipments which can evaluate the mechanical behavior of large size testing materials such as gravel, crushed rock and so on. These kind of large testing equipments are usually used to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of large size material which are applied in the large infra structures like dam, seashore structure, coastal landfill, soil-structure interaction and seismic response of large-scale structure. In this research, state-of-the-art information in the field of geotechnical engineering was collected and summarized for such large-scale experimental equipments as large-scale geo-centrifuge, large-scale triaxial testing machine, large-scale direct shear testing apparatus and large-scale oedometer.

In this case study, the field investigation work on soft soils like a reclamation area with dredged-clay or intertidal mud flat which has not enough strength to resist the load of surveying machines, the amphibious barge(modified AMFIROL) which travels on land and water was adopted to the field investigation work. Despite of slight increase of cost, it was found that the adoption of amphibious barge in field investigation could improve the quality of test results and avoid the waste of time and some effort.

The deformation modulus is an important variable which can be used to predict settlement of structures, analyze horizontal directions of piles and design roads. Though to predict deformation modulus relationships using standard penentration test N-value and undrained shear strength were suggested , these relationships are not appropriate in domestic areas because these relationships are based on foreign areas. Therefore, in this study, with field test results, reasonable equations in domestic area are suggested to estimate deformation modulus.

The coarse grained materials which is produced in the domestic stony mountains are used as principle materials in the construction sites such as dams, ports, pavement structures and etc. Despite using of various fields like this, There is few apparatuses to experiment these materials in the country. some design parameters of the structures until these days was used from the result of former research abroad. Hereupon, We have developed the large scale direct shear test apparatus and we conduct research in order to get a shear strength of the coarse grained materials from the domestic stony mountains in Kyuong-gi, Choong-chung and Kyoung-sang province. As results of the test, it was revealed that the internal friction was ranging from
$38.6^{\circ}$ to$44.5^{\circ}$ and the cohesion was from$1.1kg/cm^2$ to$1.7kg/cm^2$ depending on the local rock conditions. -
In a NATM tunnel, fully grouted bolts are widely used as part of supporting system. Grouted bolts play an important role not as to take some parts of load acting on a tunnel lining but as to reinforce the ground adjacent the tunnel. In conjunction with tunnel construction, the presence of groundwater may pose a number of difficulties. With respect to tunnel design, influences of groundwater on tunnel behavior have been considered in many aspects. However, the effect on grouted bolts has been rarely investigated. In this study, the behavior of grouted bolts, which are affected by the seepage forces, was examined. To investigate the effects of seepage forces, the theoretical solutions for a drained condition were also found. Based on the theoretical solutions, ground reaction curves considering seepage forces were obtained. By comparing the ground reaction curves supported by grouted bolts with those for the unsupported cases, the effect of reinforcement was evaluated. Finally, through comparison between supported ground reaction curves in the drained condition and those in the case of groundwater flow, it was found that the grouted bolts are more structurely beneficial when the seepage occurs towards the tunnel than when there is no groundwater flow.

The system which can manage and analyse the tunnel information in design and construction stage was developed through several years' research named ITIS(Intelligent Tunnel Information System). Now, the system is being modified and improved for the use of international tunnel construction information sharing. Some countries have their own management system for tunnel construction, and one of them, called DEST(Data Evaluation System for Tunneling), is adopted for the international cooperation for this research of development. The aimed system is operated under world wide web environment. -
This paper deals with the numerical study for excavation crossing the fault zone and the change of support pattern in field. The numerical analyses by FLAC program were performed to evaluate the suitable support pattern influenced by the width of Fault Zone, considering rock mass condition(RMR classification). Based on the results, it is found that partial reinforcement or degrading support pattern is suitable, when the width of Fault is under 3m. But when the width of Fault is more than 6m(0.5D), extra support pattern for fault zone is acceptable. At field, this result is generally used as a guide in the construction of roadway tunnel, but it is also possible to vary this assessment along the condition of fault.

A thixotropic grout has been newly developed for the use of back-filling a tail void in the shield tunnel and filling up ground voids. The grout developed in the study is a mixture of colloidal silica, cement and some functional additives. Its engineering characteristics was investigated by measuring a viscosity and unconfined compressive strengths. The optimum mixing proportion for an effective thixotropic grout was proposed through several repeated laboratory tests. The various physical properties such as thixotropy, unconfined compressive strengths, and durability of the thixotropic grout and the gels produced from the grout were compared with those of the well-known waterglass grout such as L.W.. The thixotropic grout developed in the study exhibited an excellent performance for back-filling of tail voids, based on experimental results compared to the existing waterglass grout.

Shotcrete for the support of tunnel can contact with groundwater. The hazardous components in the groundwater cause the corrosion of shotcrete. Also, the hazardous components may deteriorate the engineering properties of shotcrete, such as compressive strength, bond strength, and flexural strength. The more the effect of the hazardous components on the shotcrete may increase, the more the stability of tunnel structure may decrease. It was analyzed to find the hazardous components in the ground water. The uniaxial compressive strength test, XRD, SEM were conducted to evaluate the durability and corrosion of shotcrete. These tests were performed on shotcrete specimens at 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeks. The specimens were immersed in various chemical solutions including hazardous components after the specimens were made at the construction site.

The introduction of geodetic methods of absolute displacement monitoring in tunnels has improved the value of the measurements significantly. By using this method, structurally controlled behavior and influences of an anisotropic rock mass can be determined and the excavation and support adjusted accordingly. In this study cases of tunnel monitoring in anisotropic/heterogeneous rock masses are analyzed, and various anisotrpic behavior of tunnel can be estimated. Because rock anisotropy and heterogeneity can have great influence on tunnel behavior, tunnel design considering rock anisotropy and heterogeneity is needed. Also under construction, feedback must be performed by using face mapping and monitoring to prevent over-deformation and tunnel collapse.

Korean shotcrete technology has been developed by constructing underground space, roads and rails for expanding SOC project. To late, importance of shotcrete is raised due to the efforts for semi-permanent use of underground structure and a long term safety. Shotcrete method and quality criterion have been developed continuously in abroad, but there are no standard and quality criterion of shotcrete in Korea. International quality criterion has been used to domestic conditions, so various problems are occurred in construction field, material, mixture, equipment, and so on. In this study, to establish standard of domestic shotcrete, both internal and external quality criteria were investigate and opinion poll was performed in the construction field. Field test was performed to propose a quality improvement on the shotcrete material.

Most tunnel lining material which has been used in the domestic is a concrete. But many problems as the construction period, the cost, and the crack occurrence for the design, construction, and management were happened in the concrete lining. For this reason, many research institutes like the Korea Highway Corporation recognize the necessity of an alternate material development and grow on the interest for that. So in this study, the behaviour characteristics for the application of the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining in cut-and-cover tunnel are evaluated as several conditions for the backfill height, the cutting slope, and the relative density of backfill soil are changed. In addition, through using that conditions, CHBDC(2000, Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code) is evaluated if it could be applied to the design by comparing with the numerical analysis results. As the behaviour characteristics of the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining by CHBDC and the static numerical analysis are analyzed, both the methods show the same linear increases of the compressive stress according to the increase of the backfill height. The CHBDC of the dead load condition has very similar tendency by comparing with the result of the static numerical analysis. -
This study investigated the applicability of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique for prediction of tunnel behavior. For training data collection, a series of finite element analyses were conducted for actual tunnel project site. Using the data, optimimzed ANNs were developed through a sensitivity study on internal parameters. The developed ANNs can make tunneling related predictions such as tunnel crown settlement, shotcrete lining stress, ground surface settlement, and groundwater inflow rate. The results indicated that the developed ANNs can be used as an effective and efficient tool for tunnelling related prediction in practical tunneling situations.

In this paper, there is intended to introduce the new tunnel face shape, that is concave shaped face, and discusses its effects on the tunnel stabilization. Therefore, a comparative analysis in which the stability of a concave face was compared to that of a conventional plane face on the basis of displacement patterns in the tunnel face was conducted using a model test. In order to check and confirm displacement patterns on the concave face according to the radius of curvature as well as those around the face according to lateral pressure coefficient(k), two experimental concave models, produced at a scale of 1:2 and 1:5(tunnel radius), of the forefront of the curved area extended from plane face was built and tested.

In this study, the whole deformation conditions of domestic old tunnels and reinforcement methods for deformation tunnels were investigated and analysed, and the present conditions, occurrence cause and reinforcement methods of cavity behind the tunnel lining were investigated and analysed comprehensively. The deformation causes of domestic old tunnels could be classified in three kinds : change of earth pressure operating tunnel ground, material problem of concrete lining, mistake of design and construction. As a result of analysis, the tunnel deformation was occurred by not specific cause but various cause As a result of investigation for 455 domestic tunnel data, more than 70% of the tunnel deformation was related to leakage and the other deformation cause also accompanied leakage mostly. An applied reinforcement method was related to leakage and flood prevention measures, but application of reinforcement method for boundary area between tunnel and ground and tunnel periphery which influence on the tunnel stability was still defective. The cavity of domestic old tunnel occupied about 16% of the total tunnel length and about 68% of cavity was located in the crown of tunnel, and besides, the occurrence cause of cavity was analysed to design, construction and management cause. The filling method for cavity using filling material was comprehensively appling to cavity behind tunnel lining.

New construction for public transport in congested urban areas will involve tunnel construction adjacent to existing building or bridge foundations and services due to the lack of surface space. Therefore, careful assessment of the important underground structure-soil-tunnelling interaction is relatively new, currently only limited information is available. In this study, the authors carried out FE analysis and the laboratory model test using the photogrammetric technique and suggested the influence zones associated with the normalised pile tip settlement during new tunnel construction.

In this paper, the theoretical method of measuring the tunnel convergence and underground displacement, the objective indices of assessing safety for tunnel construction, using the fiber optic sensor is studied by developing the program to automatically measure them. The model test of Con'c beam is conducted to evaluate reliability of the fiber optic sensor. Furthermore, using the RS232 communication protocol as well as Visual C# and Visual C++, the programming tools, the program was developed to detect automatically the measured value of the fiber optic sensor, calculate the tunnel convergence and underground displacement, predict the deformed shape of the tunnel, and evaluate loosening zone due to the tunnel excavation.

In case of the drainage type tunnel, the residual water pressure is likely to act on the tunnel lining due to the decrease of water-passing capacity of the filter material. Therefore, this study discussions a method to predict the lining load with the consideration of water passing capacity of the filter material through the literature review and numerical analysis. It is expected from the results of case studies that the design load acting on the concrete lining in the drainage type tunnel could be assumed to be about 50% of the hydrostatic water pressure in steady-state ground-water condition.

Mechanical properties of Municipal Solid Wastes(MSW) and their influencing parameters were studied by using a series of triaxial compression tests and resonant column tests. The shear strength of MSW can be modeled by a bilinear failure criterion. As the unit weight increasing, cohesion and internal friction were increased linearly on semi-log scale. As the proportion of waste to soil increases, maximum shear moduli tend to decrease whereas minimum damping ratios increase. Shear moduli and damping of degradable waste are higher than those of non-degradable MSW.

A real-time monitoring system for in-situ soil remediation technologies is developed and then applied to electrokinetic remediation technique in the field trial tests during 150days. The developed system is consisted the controlled program based on internet web page, data logger, measurement instruments and so on. In the measured items there are pH, temperature, electrical current and potential, vacuum pressure. The results indicated that the system is successively applied to electrokinetic remediation technique, and further research considering economic view and multi purpose system for in-situ soil remediation technologies is needed.

To analyze the effects of oyster shell particles, inserted in the self-hardening matrix such as cement paste, on strength, homogenization analysis using micro structure was used to estimate and assess the apparent elastic modulus of oyster shell particle. DIB modeling technique was used to represent of the micro structure of oyster shell mixed concrete. The results showed that the apparent elastic modulus of LOS (large oyster shell particle) was changed with the amount of LOS inserted. In particular, when the amount of LOS was 200% of the weight of cement, the apparent elastic modulus of LOS tended to decrease rapidly. This could mean that the strength of oyster shell mixed concrete is much affected by LOS inserted material in mixed ratio of 200%.

Gas permeability of the solidified sewage sludge needs to be characterized in order to use as a large-scale landfill cover material. Four different types of the samples were prepared for gas permeability experiments: (1) granite soil, (2) dried sewage sludge, (3) solidified sewage mixed with slag and (4) solidified sewage mixed with granite soils. The experimental instrumentation and measurement devices were newly designed and created to effectively evaluate gas permeability of the samples.

There are a number of approaches to in situ remediation that are used at contaminated sites for removing contaminants from the contaminated zone without excavating the soil. These include soil flushing, dual phase extraction, and soil vapor extraction. Of these techniques, soil flushing is the focus of the investigation in this paper. The concept of using prefabricated vertical drains(PVDs) for remediation of contaminated sites with fine-grained soils is examined. The PVD system is used to shorten the drainage path or the groundwater flow and promote subsurface liquid movement expediting the soil flushing process. The use of PVDs in the current state of practice has been limited to soil improvement. The use of PVDs under vacuum conditions is investigated using sample soil consisting of silty sand.

The purposes of daily cover are to control odor and volatile organic compound emissions, to control litters, to mitigate rainfall infiltration. Under usual operation of landfill, the soil layer of 15cm thick is used for daily cover, but about
$20{\sim}$ 25% of landfill capacity is consumed by daily cover volume. Considering our limited land and difficulty in getting landfill site, developing an alternative daily cover material which usually occupies much less volume than soil will be very significant. Also, if we can use waste material for alternative daily cover, we can get additional benefit of recycling waste. -
Preventing the infiltration of rainwater into the landfill site is the main purpose of the final cover in landfill sites. Compacted clay layer or geomembrain have been used as a conventional landfill final cover. But they have several disadvantages when damages might occur due to puncturing, differential settlement and desiccation or freeze and thaw. For this reason, as an alternative method SRSL(Self Recovering Sustainable Liner) has been developed. Adopting the precipitation reaction of two chemical material, by forming precipitates that fill the pores, and lower the overall permeability of the liner. The advantage of this method is that when fracture of the liner occurs the remaining reactants of the two layers form precipitates that fill the fracture and recover the low permeability of the liner. In this study, the recovering ability of the SRSL with a crack due to the seasonal variation or differential settlements was investigated by permeability tests. And in order to estimate the durability of the SRSL after freeze/thaw and desiccation, uniaxial compression strength tests were performed.

In a case of an example in Korea, some areas of Yangsan near Busan which exist on soft ground with aquifer, showed us some difficulties of the preparing for housing site and earth structures. From these experiences, recently, the development and research of technology is getting increased, which minimize the influence to the environment from construction work, which is in an agreement with eco-friendly construction in terms of the reasonable processing of ground water. On this case study, one area of Japan that has many site on soft ground with aquifer, is introduced as the reasonable processing of ground water. The applications of the technology for ground water in Korea are discussed.

In this paper, reliability analysis of surface settlement by ground water drawdown is performed using a reliability-groundwater flow numerical model. The result is compared with that of the deterministic model to evaluate the influence of the uncertainty from hydraulic conductivity in the soft ground as well as to determine the range of hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground. From the analyses, it was found that probability of failure to exceed the tolerable settlement was very high, if the hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground is decided from the deterministic flow model only. Reliability analysis which evaluates variance of hydraulic conductivity should be used together with the deterministic model for grouting design of tunnels to prevent ground water drawdown.

For anchored system applications, each ground anchor is tested after installation and prior to being put into service to loads that exceed the design. This load testing methodology, combined with specific acceptance criteria, is used to verify that the ground anchor can carry the design load without excessive deformations and that the assumed load transfer mechanisms have been properly developed behind the assumed critical failure surface. After acceptance, the ground anchor is stressed to a specified load and the load is locked-off. The two types of load tests conducted during the research program included performance test and creep test which were carried out in accordance with testing procedures by AASHTO(AASHTO 1990) and FHWA(Weatherby 1998) at Samsung-Dong 00 Site. Form the measurements, ultimate load and creep rate of anchors are proposed for straight shaft pressured grouted anchors in waste landfill. The load distribution on the grout was obtained from the measured strain data at each fraction of the ultimate load during the load tests.

Based on the field measuring data obtained from excavation sections in Inchon International Airport project, the relationships between the horizontal displacement of sheet-pile walls and the deformations of soft ground around the excavation were investigated. The horizontal displacements of walls according to supporting method are largely occurred in order of anchors, anchors with struts, and struts. The depths of maximum horizontal displacement are varied with supporting systems. If the stability number shows lower than
${\pi}$ , the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity of maximum horizontal displacement are respectively developed less than 1% of excavation depth and 1mm/day. When the stability number shows lower than${\pi}+2$ , the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity are respectively developed less than 2.5% of excavation depth and 2mm/day. Also, when the stability number shows more than${\pi}+2$ , the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity are rapidly increased. -
Horizontal displacement of slurry wall with strut is analyzed using 2-D numerical stress-displacement program, FLAC. Validation of the program results are performed using the pre- and ongoing excavation sections and further displacement is predicted in the stage of strut removal. The result show that the calculated displacement was very close to the measured displacement when 40% in-situ strut preloading is applied to the strut loading of the program considering the horizontal spacing of struts in the field. It was found that construction efficiency can be improved by partially removing the struts before putting slabs in the stage of subway structure construction.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the ground deformation by trench excavation for Diaphragm Wall construction. The model tests are performed to investigate the back ground deformation by lowering of slurry level in trench after excavating. Through these, the deformation characteristic of the back ground due to stress release of excavated space was investigated. This study considered relative density of soil mass and the distance between trench and surcharge. An experiment was performed in order to observe the failure pattern of a slurry-supported trench excavated in sandy ground. From model tests, in order to predict reasonably the deformation behavior of the adjacent ground due to the underground excavation, it is significantly recommended that the ground settlement by trench excavation should be considered.

In this study, a new earth retention system has been developed and introduced. This system is a self-supported earth retaining wall without struts. The new earth retention system consists of connected double H-pile and wale. This system provides a larger spacing of support, economical benefit, construction easiness, good performance and safety. This paper explains basic principles and mechanism of self-supported earth retaining wall. In order to investigate applicability and safety of this system, numerical analysis was performed. The finite differential method program, FLAC3D is used. The predicted performances of this system were presented and discussed.

In this study, the effects of temperature on loading of long-span strut were studied by using field monitoring and numerical analysis. For the field monitoring, several sensors, such as stain gages, temperature gages and load cells, were installed on the struts. From the monitoring results, the relation between temperature and axial force of the struts was analysed. By numerical analysis, the changes of axial force of strut and lateral displacement of wall due to temperature change were described with the strut length and ground conditions.

This paper presents the results of small scale model tests on the behavior of propped wall and ground movements during deep excavation. Small scale model tests were performed in order to investigate the effects of various influencing factors on the deep excavation, such as stiffness of ground and unsupported span length. The results of model tests indicated that the wall behavior is significantly influenced not only by the stiffness of ground but by the over-excavation, and that the wall behavior can be reduced by decreasing the unsupported span length and increasing the stiffness of ground.

An inhomogeneous and anisotropic rock has different properties at different location. Thus, this refers to any of the properties which we may be measuring. There are two concepts of rock mass, namely, CHILE(Continuous, Homogeneous, Isotropic, Linear Elastic) material and DIANE(Discontinuous, Inhomogeneous, Anisotropic, Non-linear Elastic) rock. The former is essentially the properties of intact rock, the latter is essentially the properties governed by the structure of rock. In geotechnical aspect, the most important parameter is strength of rock or rock mass. In particular, characteristics of strength of rock mass depend upon the orientation of discontinuities And this orientation of discontinuities has different properties at different direction of excavation. Therefore, it needs for characterization of different properties of discontinuity orientation against different direction of excavation.

In this study, Model test of concrete frame structures with various shapes and locations are carried out by means of applying Peck's(1969) settlement method. The results of the model test indicated that important correlations existed between the behavior of frame structure and ground movement. Also, the damage level of frame structure closely influenced by the phase of excavation. Therefore, prediction of damage level at early phase of construction should be very precise. The damage level graph by Cording et al.(2001), the angular distortion provided gradually more serious damage to frame structures for the all cases. But the damage level graph by Burland(1997), was difficult to confirm because of very small amount of deflection ratio.

The study on the lateral earth pressure is briskly preformed for various conditions such as type of retaining walls, ground condition, and type of supporting systems. It is not simple to determine the distribution of lateral earth pressure accurately, however, because the lateral earth pressure is affected by various factors. This study is performed to analyze the behavior of earth retaining walls for new excavation contacting with existing excavation by comparing with the site measuring values before and after new excavation. On the base of observation, the distribution of strut axial forces is similar to that of ganeral earth retaining walls, but strut axial forces is increased by removal of existing earth anchors. When new excavation is performed contacting with existing excavation, the axial force of strut is decreased because of soil exclusion in the behind walls, but that force is increased after new exeavation. The analysis result show that the installation of strut in middle part makes a effect to not only 1 adjacent strut, but 3-5 adjacent struts. Also during new excavation strut axial forces is decreased by relaxation of total earth retaining wall system.

The efficiency of the hydraulic transport of soil-water mixtures is an important factor in designing and operating a pump & pipeline system and is directly connected with dredging cost and working period. However, the hydraulic transport mechanism in the slurry flow inside the pipeline such as frictional losses, specific energy consumption, deposition velocity has not been well established. In this study a new dredging test loop system was designed and built. It is composed of a slurry pipeline with pipes of different diameters, a centrifugal slurry pump and a diesel engine connected with the slurry pump. and equipped with modern measuring facilities that enable to measure all important characteristics of a transportation system. The objective of this paper is to discuss the efficiency of the hydraulic transport of the Jumoonjin sand-water mixtures in the dredging test loop and to present simple equations induced from the test results of the loop that can express the transport product and the transport productivity.

In this study, the potential for liquefaction in the Incheon international airport was calculated by appling the standard penetration test data and laboratory test data to the modified Seed & Idriss(2001) method. The analysis was performed on the non-plastic silty layer and silty sand layer which within the depth of 20m, below 20 of the standard penetration value(N), and the ground water level. Also, each set of data was mapped by using GIS(geographic information systems) and the factor of safety for the potential for liquefaction was obtained by overlapping those layers. As a result, it was found that there exist potential hazard zone for the liquefaction partially. So, the additional detailed assessments for those are thought to be necessary.

In order to investigate the effect of improvement with bamboo mats on dredged fills, several tests were performed with different widthes (0.0B, 0.5B, 1.0B, 2.0B). The results indicate that the failure modes of the models without bamboo mats are close to local shear failure, and change to general shear failure as the width of a bamboo mat increases. A series of tests with four different widths (0.0B, 0.5B, 1.0B, 2.0B) were carried out on the models which have no desiccated surface layers, to find out the width that the general shear failure might occur. Finally, a series of tests with this width were performed on the models with three different desiccated surface layers (3cm, 5cm, 10cm). Throughout the tests, strength and deformation according to the thickness of desiccated surface layer was investigated.

The purpose of this study is investigated the method for estimation of the liquefaction on the reclaimed land, located in Incheon and assessed the ability of liquefaction under the condition of criteria, which is the magnitude '6.5' of seismic on the basis of the domestic seismic characteristics. Performed not only field test but the experiment as well to study how the fine content would affect into the dreging and reclaimed land and also estimated the safety factor through the empirical method and anticipated detail method based on the results. Within the reclaimed land, there are many sized soils which are almost extended from well-graded silty sand(SM) to poor-graded fine grained sand, and which have the condition, so called, the liquefaction which is easily to bring into under the circumstances within the ground. However, partly, now that the soil is mixed with silt and silty clay which include the content of fine grained dust quite a bit, the difficulties and inconveniences has been expected while trying to find the ratio of cyclic resistance, but finally Seed and Idriss method showed the most way when we estimate the safety factor on the liquefaction.

Theoretical and experimental result studies of the unconfined penetration test (UP) method are conducted to suggest a new test method by improving the UP method for determination of the tensile strength of compacted fine-grained soils. From the theoretical aspect, the tensile strength of the specimen is estimated from the maximum load by the theory of perfect plasticity with assumptions, sufficient local deformability and modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Experimentally, some factors including relative size of specimen-disc, disc diameter, and loading rate are needed more study, because these factors significantly affect the results of tensile strength. Improvement of the alignement between two discs and specimen in the UP test is also necessary to eliminate the error due to eccentrically loading.

In this study, geotextiles was applied on the selected track-bed, which is relatively economical and efficient way to prevent the problem of mud-pumping and settlement. Field testing sections from Mock-haeng to Dong-ryang in the Chung-buk lines in Korea were selected to investigate the state of track and roadbed. And three places were chosen among 1,700 spots where mud-pumping was frequently occurred and maintenance required. At the curved section with radius of 500m between Mock-haeng and Dong-ryang, we divided this testing site into 5 section and 4 different types of geotextile were installed and left the last section with no reinforcement. Total length of the test site was 200m and individual length of each site was 40 m. In order to understand the state and the strength of prepared roadbed, stiffness and physical properties of the roadbed soil were evaluated and analyzed. Also, after the installation, mud-pumping, settlement of elastic or plastic sleeper, failure of track, wheel-loads, lateral force and earth pressures were investigated.

Geotextiles form one of the two largest groups of geosynthetics and it is consisted two major types of synthetic material (Woven, Non-woven). The functions of geotextiles are separation, reinforcement, filtration, drainage and as a moisture barrier. Within these functions, however, there are a large number of applications or use areas. Although the many research scholar and engineer developed and established the design criteria and construction methodology of geosynthetics filter layer, because the lack of suitable design terminology and uncertainty of long term durability, sustainable research still needed for optimum design methodology to the complicate field conditions. Especially, more intensive research needed about under the cyclic flow condition and fine silty sand base material. In this paper, the filter model test performed under cyclic flow with various boundary conditions (period and frequency of cyclic flow, types of geosynthetic filter material, surcharge etc.).

The use of geogrid for SRW systems and bridge abutment has increased rapidly over the past 10 years in Korea. The concept of segmental retaining walls and reinforced soil is very old and for example The Ziggurats of Babylonia(i.e. Tower of Babel) were built some 2,500 to 3,000 years ago using soil reinforcing methods very similar to those described in current design. Modern SRW(Semental Retaining Wall) units were introduced in 1960's as concrete crib retaining wall systems. In this paper, the friction properties between segmental concrete units and geogrid are investigated by performing various tests.

New procedure for evaluation of creep reduction factor using performance limit strain concept was introduced and confirmed through the creep test results. To determine the performance limit strain of the textile geogrid used in this study, the Sherby-Dorm Plots were applied and the results were compared with the results that applied existed limit strain criteria (GRI test method GG-4). The limit creep strain of the geogrid samples that determined by using the Sherby-Dorm Plots were all 11%. This value is more higher than the existed criteria as 10%. From this 11% limit strain the creep reduction factors were calculated at 100,000 hours design. It was resulted in 1.45 for all of the geogrid samples(8t/m, 10t/m). Finally, when it was compared with the creep reduction factors that using 10% criteria, there were some decrease of reduction factor values about
$0.06{\sim}0.14$ . -
To calculate the long-term allowable strength of geosynthetic reinforcement, replacement method was recommended. The isochronous creep curve by S. Turner was used to define the relation between creep strain and allowable strength. In isochronous curve at given time, one can read the allowable strength at allowable creep strain. The allowable strain gets from specification by directors or manufacturers according to the allowable displacement of reinforced structures. The allowable strength can be determined in relation to the allowable horizontal displacement each structures case by case. The effect of install damage on isochronous behaviors of geosynthetic reinforcement was little. In previous study, install damage increase the creep strain slightly. And the degradation was not identified. But it is supposed that degradation increase the creep strain. In conclusion, The recommended model to determine long-term allowable strength of geosynthetic reinforcements considering tensile deformation of reinforcement and soil is fit for proper, correct and economic design for reinforced earth walls.

In this study, the installation location of accelerometer and accelerograph for dam are investigated in the field to establish of emergency action against dam failure when earthquake occur and to guarantee the results of seismic stability of dams which are analysed with dynamic analysis method during 1999 to 2003 by KOWACO. By a comparative study concerning of domestic and foreign guidelines of seismic strong motion instrumentation for dams, "Guidelines of Seismic Strong-Motion Instrumentation Installation, Operation and Maintenance for Dams" is established to set up the standard of seismic strong-motion instrumentation for dam, are supervised by KOWACO There is some problems in taking a measure of stability of dams when earthquake event occur because the existing seismic strong motion instruments are operated independently. This make difficult to confirm the occurrence of seismic event. For that reason, in this study the plan of unified operation and maintenance system for strong-motion instrument for dams is designed. It will make possible real-time seismic monitoring, data transmission and receiving, giving warning for earthquake, and exchanging data with national seismic network.

Recently, the probable maximum precipitation (PMP) of dam sites has been greatly increased, compared to that in design, due to a rise in precipitation by abnormal weather, which led to an increase in National interest for dam safety. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a management system of dam safety. The main contents of the first stage(
$'03{\sim}'04$ ) of the project consisted of determining the object of management system of dam safety through researched present situation of dam safety management in domestic and reviewing operation for management system of dam safety in abroad. In the second stage($'05{\sim}'06$ ), the study pursues constructing a basis process of synthetic safety management system through dam safety program and developing a system that can judge dam safety with an improve in reliability of measurement data. -
In this study was investigated and analyzed of damage characteristics for infrastructures by typhoon that have been many occur. The objective Structures were the road and hydraulic structure. The road structure was included the cut-slopes, retaining walls and bridges. The hydraulic structure is divided with the dike, small-scale dam, reservoir and floodgate. The analysis result of the bridge damage cause is river bottom height increase and passage ability decrease. The principal damage reasons of the cut-slope structure are weakening the ground due to the localized torrential downpour and drainage defective. Also, the principal damage reasons of the small-scale dam, reservoir, dike and the floodgate are continuous collapse of dike beside the floodgate.And we divided a typhoon damage occurrence cause with artificial and natural. As the result of analysis, the many damage occurrence cause will be removed by system improvement and technical development.
