Anisotropic consolidation, shear, a transportational component during or after deposition each may produce anisotropic fabrics, which result in the anisotropic properties of soils. Nevertheless, the isotropically consolidated compression triaxial tests are commonly used in practice to determine the strength of the anisotropically consolidated soils because of their practicality and simplicity. In this paper the effects of anisotropic consolidation on the strength properties of soils are discussed. For the sandy soils consolidated under a constant vertical consolidation pressure, the deformation modulus decreases with decreasing consolidation pressure ratio(
$\sigma$ $\sub$ 3c/'/$\sigma$ sub 1c/'), but the liquefaction resistance increases. For the saturated cohesive soils, both the undrained shear strength and undrained creep strength decrese with decreasing the consolidation pressure ratio. When the in-situ strength properties of the anisotropically and normally consolidated soils are determined by the isotropically consolidated tests, the undrained shear strength and creep strength of saturated cohesive soils as well as the deformation modulus of sandy soils are measured to be higher than the rear in-situ values. This, therefore, could lead to a dangerous judgement in stability analysis -
Hardening agent has been the traditional material for surface soil stabilization of soft ground. This study aims at determining optimal mixture ratio of hardening agent in accordance with the required design specifications. Hardening agent is properly mixtured with Fly ash, Gypsum, Slag and Cement for the ettringite hydrates which is effective for early stabilization of unconsolidated soil. The treated soil is the clay which are widely found here and there in Korea. In this study, preliminary tests were performed to get optimal mixture ratio of stabilizer ingredient, and marine clay in Jin-Hae was used to get physical and chemical properties. Laboratory tests of 50 stabilized soil were peformed to get optimal mixture ratio for 16 stabilizer material of 6 type, and stabilizer mixing was determined.

In order to analyze the behavior of piled abutment adjacent to surcharge loads a numerical study was conducted. In 2D plane stalin analysis, the distribution of lateral soil movement was investigated by varying the thickness of clay layer and the magnitude of surcharge loads. In 3D analysis, the magnitude and distribution of lateral pile-soil movement were studied for different cap rigidity. Based on limited parametric studies, a simple method is proposed to identify the lateral pressure of piled abutment adjacent to surcharge loads.

The horizontal drain method is one of the soil improvement methods in reclamation works using dredged soils. In this method, plastic drain boards are installed horizontally in the ground, and a seepage pressure or negative pressure is applied through one end of these drains. In this study, a basic consolidation test using horizontal drains was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of this method. The configuration of soil box which was used in this test is 100cm(B)
${\times}$ 100cm(L)${\times}$ 85cm(H). The drain board was reduced to 25mm${\times}$ 5mm. The variations in settlement and volume of drain water during the consolidation process were measured, and the distribution of water content and the transpormation of horizontal drain were investigated. -
Most land development projects and large scale civil works require a great amount of sand. And sand is also the most favorable material for soft ground improvement. The demand for sand is soaring rapidly due to increased number of projects regardless of its limited supply. Therefore, it is not difficult to predict that sand may become depleted and no longer be available as ground improvement material in the near future. Against this backdrop, developing an inexpensive sand-substitution material with an efficient accessibility will be necessary and urgently called for. So quick lime could be recommended as the substitutional material for sand. Quick lime is now preferred by forward developed nations. If Korea is able to take advantage of its abundant supply, economical efficiency could be achieved through massive production as well as being able to take advantage of utilization of natural resources. In this respect the purpose of this paper was to estimate improvement effect of soft ground though in-situ construction of quick lime pile. In-situ construction was peformed in road construction site of soft clay and in this study quick lime from Dan-yang that was estimated prominently in aspect of engineering characteristics was used. Quick lime piles were installed by 1.5m, 2.0m, 3.0m spacing to confirm improvement effect according to spacing and installed piles are 0.4m in diameter, up to 5m in length and the density of quick piles installed is 1.4 t/㎥. Vibrating wire pore water pressure cell was installed to confirm consolidation characteristics in surrounding of quick lime piles and both laboratory test and field test were carried out to confirm strength increase. In conclusion, soft ground improvement by quick lime piles was confirmed.

Several soil parameters can be calculated for results of Piezocone test; sensitivity, soil classification, OCR, undrained shear strength, coefficient of consolidation etc., and used to analysis geotechnical problems. Particularly, the coefficient of consolidation which is related to degree of consolidation varies according to rigidity index(I/sub r/). In this study, rigidity index(I/sub r/) was analyzed by Roy's formula. Trixial tests and unconfined compression tests data in the ten sites was analyzed. In conclusion, rigidity index(I/sub r/) was suggested such as rigidity index(I/sub r/) = 15∼60, average rigidity index value(I/sub r/) of approximately 33 within a country.

In this paper, a laboratory investigation was carried out to estimate the strength improvement of quicklime mixture with fly ash and rice husk ash for the effective use of surplus soils, and the shear strength with curing time was estimated at lime 10 percent with the change of fly ash and rice husk ash content. The effect of strength improvement has been established through the change of fly ash and rice husk ash content from the samples taken at Samsan region, Ulsan. The test results indicated that the presence of lime with fly ash and rice husk ash encouraged the stabilization efficiency of lime with fly ash and rice husk ash, and increased shear strength. Furthermore, it is necessary for inquiring into the relationship between the characteristics of strength and the chemical components.

In 1925, H.J. Joosten was the first in the world to use chemical injection grouts composed of sodium silicate and calcium chloride. This unique development prompted the introduction of other chemical grouting techniques. Among these chemical grouting techniques, sodium silicate based grout has been the most widely used in the world, but it has not been generally considered to be a permanent material. Therefore, studies to improve the weak points of sodium silicate based grout have been conducted, and new applications of grout were recently developed. We also developed the micro fine hybrid silicate grout of suspention type which properties are sepecialized as the high strength and durability, according to the reactant of special sodium silicate grout and the high strength hardener. As the results of this study we could derive the 2 times over high strength of Micro fine hybrid Silicate grouting method(MS method) more than that of the ordinary sodium silicate grout. And also we could confirm that the alkali leakage of micro fine hybrid silicate grout is less than that of ordinary sodium silicate grout. So we could get the high strength and durability of hybrid silicate grout are superior to those of ordinary sodium silicate grout.

In generally, grouting consists of injecting a suspension or solution into the voids of soils. The low slump mortar grout has been used in America since 1950's. The Compaction Grouting, the injection of a very stiff under relatively high pressure, form a cylinderical grout support pile. The grout generally does not enter soil pores but remains in homogeneous mass that gives controlled displacement either to compact loose soils, or for lifting of structures, or both. In this paper, on the case of the reinforcement construction of 00 plant that the foundation's bearing capacity is insufficient and is to reinforce the foundation, a study has been peformed to analyze the effectiveness of the ground improvement. The bearing capacity of the Compaction Pile has been verified by the S.P.T and the settlement of the improved ground has been monitored rising the magnetic extensometer.

Recently, application of the reinforced earth wall is in increasing trend. Although many investigations on the influence of the length and spacing of reinforcement and the values of surcharge load has been carried out in the past, but the research about the influence of the location and value of surcharge loads has been scarce. Therefore this study was necessitated. The model test were carried out by varying the location and value of surcharge loads for two types of the backfill soils.

This paper concerns the distribution of earth pressures on a cantilever wall with unattached reinforcements in the backfill. This type of walls is different from the existing reinforced earth walls in that unattached reinforcements are placed in the backfill of rigid retaining wall such as gravity wall and cantilever wall, instead of connecting reinforcements to the wall segments. Two large-scale prototype tests have been carried out with a 4m high cantilever wall; one with unreinforced backfill, the other with unattached strips in the backfill. The reinforcing effect of unattached strips are discussed based on the earth pressure distribution measured in two large-scale prototype tests. Also, the comparison between measured and predicted earth pressure on a wall with unattached strips are discussed herein to confirm the validity of analytical prediction.

When compared with conventional retaining wall system, there are many advantages to reinforced soil such as cost effectiveness, flexibility and so on. The use of reinforced soil have been increased in the last 17 years in Korea. In this study, a full-scale reinforced soil with rigid facing were constructed to investigate the behavior of reinforcing system. The results of soil pressure and strain of reinforcement during construction are described. The influence of compaction on soil pressure and strain of reinforcement is addressed. The results show that lateral earth pressures on the wall are active state during backfill. It is obtained that the lateral soil pressure depends on the installation condition of pressure cell and construction condition. It is also observed that maximum tensile strains of reinforcement are located on 50cm to 150cm from the wall. Long-term measurement will be followed to verify the design assumptions with respect to the distribution of lateral stress in the reinforcement

Finite Element Analysis of Soil-Reinforced Segmental Retaining Walls Subjected to Earthquake LoadingThis paper presents the results of finite element analysis on the seismic response of a soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall subjected to a prescribed earthquake record. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the maximum wall displacement occurs at the top, exhibiting a cantilever type of wall movement. Also revealed is that the increase in reinforcement force is more pronounced in the upper part of the reinforced zone, resulting in a more or less uniform distribution. None of the design guidelines appears to be able to correctly predict the dynamic force increase when compared with the results of finite element analysis. The results demonstrated that there exist critical stiffness and length of reinforcement beyond which further increase would not contribute to additional reinforcing effect. Based on the findings from this study, a number of implications to the current design methods are discussed.

This paper presents the results of investigation on the effects of surface loading on the performance of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls using the finite element method of analysis. A parametric study was performed by varying location of surface loading. The results of the analyses indicate that the increment of the reinforcement tensile load due to the presence of surface load may be significantly over-estimated when using the conventional approach. Furthermore, the external stability should be carefully examined when a surface loading is present just outside the reinforced soil zone. The implications of the findings from this study to current design approaches are discussed in detail.

As the reinforced earth wall is constructed with step by step backfill compaction method, the accumulative horizontal deformation is inevitable. It has been reported that about 80% of horizontal deformation is occurred during the construction stage of reinforced earth retaining wall. To reduce the horizontal deformation, an isolated-reinforced earth wall method(KOESWall system) was newly developed. In this system, the reinforced earth is constructed first with reinforcements and backfills only, and then facing blocks are installed after the horizontal displacement of reinforced earth is fully occurred. To evaluate the effect of a construction method and the performance of KOESWall system, two cases of full scale field performance was monitored during and after the construction stages.

Soil nailing is in-situ ground improvement technique of reinforcing soils using passive inclusions for the purpose of slope stability. Also soil nailing, in general, was used and studied as a reinforcement technique at cut slope, but this paper presents the results of study for soil nailing application as a reinforcement technique at the banking over slided slope. In-situ pull-out tests of nails, instrumented with strain gauges, were performed to investigate the maximum pull-out load and to calculate the unit side resistance in each different layer. And the apparent average unit side resistance of this study was compared with that of other sites installed at cut slope.

A framework alternative to that of classical slope stability analysis is developed, wherein the soil mass is treated as a continuum and in situ soil stresses and strengths are computed accurately using inelastic finite element methods with general constitutive models. Within this framework, two alternative methods of stability analysis are presented. In the first, the strength characteristics of the soil mass are held constant, and the gravitational loading on the slope system is increased until failure is initiated by well-defined mechanisms. In the second approach, the gravity loading on the slope system is held constant, while the strength parameters of the slope mass are gradually decreased until well-defined failure mechanisms developed. Details on the applying both of the proposed methods, and comparisons of their characteristics on a number of solved example problems are presented.

A field test performance of FRP-Grouting method at a collapsed slope were carried out to verify the improving effect. The results are summerized in this paper.

A database program, named SLOPMAN, was developed to collect all the information on the slopes with potential hazard around railroad and to setup the effective management system. SLOPMAN is composed of three modules: data control, search and analysis. The program is able to store both text and image data and operated with tabs for the users' ability and convenience. Drop-down menu is equipped to reduce errors and the number of key strokes when inputting data. Searching data is made by codes automatically given to slopes or key words. In the analysis module, RMR and SMR values can be obtained to estimate the stability of slopes.

A new method of estimating axial nail force is proposed. An instrumented soil nail wall is selected to investigate the effectiveness of the new proposed method. The new method includes effect of creep and age of cement grout surrounding the steel bar, The new method also considers cracks in the grout generated during and after the end of the wall construction. It is found from this study that a reduced grout stiffness due to creep with age and crack of the grout must be considered for estimating correct axial nail forces. The reduced grout stiffness is considered also providing significant part of axial nail load compared to that of steel bar.

Profiles of discontinuities through scanline method were investigated for the analysis of rock slope stability. Lower hemispheric projection method was used to evaluate the geometric stability and failure potential of these discontinuities. Also, safety factor was evaluated for the discontinuities of failure potential using by limit equilibrium analysis. Then, displacements of rock block due to the discontinuities were displayed by using the program UDEC(Universal Distinct Element Code) which applied the Distinct Element Method. When we determine the cut-slope in design, the characteristics of discontinuities is not represented only by strength parameters of intact rock. Therefore it is more reasonable method in assuring stability that first, construction would be preceded by the cut-slope of preliminary design, and then, cut-slope would be redetermined by elaborate site investigation in processing construction.

Geotube is a tube made of geotextile and hydraulically filled with dredged soil. This technological method has been widely used in the advanced countries of the world to build the shore protection embankment. The dredged contaminated sediments from the lake, river, and harbor can be pumped into the geotube by using the hydraulic pump. So, environments effects can be minimized and enhanced by using this method. This paper presents a field test result of a geotube in the land reclamation project for the Songdo New City construction site. The dredged silty clay was dredged by the dredging ship and hydraulically pumped into the geotube. The height of geotube was measured at every filling stage and also measured width and diameter of geotube with the elapsed time. The unit weight of soil and undrained shear strength of filled soil in a tube were measured at the various locations and heights of geotube with the elapsed time. Geotube technique can be effectively implemented for the silty clayey soil with using the dredging ship.

Recently, the hydraulic fill method is commonly used in many reclamation projects due to lack of fill materials. The method of hydraulic fill in reclamation is executed by transporting the mixture of water-soil particles into a reclaimed land through dredging pipes, then the dredged soil particles settle down in the water or flow over an out flow weir with the water. In the present study, practice each three method in order to suggest method of determining the loss rate of the dredged fills. The first sieve and hydrometer analysis were performed with the soil samples obtained before and after dredging and then apply theory of particle breakage, the second compare with the volume of dredged soil between at the dredging area and the target pond and the last compare with weight of dredged soil between before and after dredging at the dredging area and in the target pond for estimating the amount of soil particles residual at the reclaimed area and the loss of soil particles passed through the weir. In addition to compare with the loss ratio between as using Marsal's modified theory of particle breakage and measured weight and volume in the field.

Numerical analysis of slope stability is presented using slice method, static seismic analysis methods, and earthquake response analysis methods. Static seismic force is considered as 0.2g while vertical static seismic force is not considered in analysis. For earthquake response analysis, Hachinohe-wave is applied. Safety factor calculated using slice method for failure surface. Calculating methods are Bishop's method and Janhu's method. Static seismic analysis was applied using Mhor-Coulomb model and earthquake response analysis was applied using non-linear elastic model.

In this study, the behavior of saturated sandy soils under dynamic loads - pore water pressure and effective stress - was investigated using Disturbed State Concept(DSC) model. The model parameters are evaluated from laboratory test data. During the process of loading and reverse loading, DSC model is utilized to trace strain-hardening and cyclic softening behavior. The procedure of back prediction proposed in this study are verified by comparing with laboratory test results. From the back prediction of pore water pressure and effective mean pressure under cyclic loading, excess pore water pressure increases up to initial effective confining pressure and effective mean pressure decrease close to zero in good greement with laboratory test results. Those results represent the liquefaction of saturated sandy soils under dynamic loads. The number of cycles at initial liquefaction using the model prediction is in good agreement with laboratory test results. Therefore, the results of this study state that the liquefaction of saturated sandy soils can be explained by the effective tress analysis.
-
When subjected to earthquake shaking, saturated sandy soil may generate excess pore pressure. And a time may come when initial confining pressure will equal to excess pore pressure. Depending on the characteristics of the soil and the length of the drainage path, excess pore pressure was dissipated after earthquake. For this reason, it was induced settlement in grounds and fatal damage of various structures. In this study, settlement in silty sand grounds induced earthquake was evaluated using post-liquefaction constitutive equation between volumetric strain and shear strain from previous study. Using that, it was proposed that simplified estimation of settlement in silty sand grounds induced liquefaction.

An understanding of the behaviour of soft clay soils is important in a large number of civil engineering applications, including dredging operations, land reclamation and slurry management such as disposal and storage. Although the details of the behaviour depend on parameters such as the soil mineralogy, the pore water chemistry, the organic content and the microbiology, there are general features that are typical in many cases. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss some of evaporation and desiccation observed in laboratory experiments under controlled conditions. Desiccation of dredged material is basically removal of water by evaporation which is controlled by weather and material type, etc. This study shows that (1) solar radiation, (2) wind velocity, (3) material depth, (4) trench depth are important factors in desiccation of dredged ultra soft clay.

The current slope stability analysis of a filldam is based on the limit equilibrium method, and in calculation of safety factor during earthquake, adopts the seismic intensity method in which it considers a uniform seismic force from dam foundation to crest. However the observed behaviour of filldam during earthquake shows some different behaviour in that at the crest the measured acceleration is usually several times the ground acceleration. In this study, slope stability calculations of a filldam are provided based on the modified seismic intensity method, which can take into account the amplification phenomena of acceleration in the upper part of dam. And also the results of calculations are compared with that of current seismic intensity method.

In order to predict depth of the pile forward modeling and inversion of magnetic logging data was conducted by using a finite line of dipoles model. The horizontal component as well as the vertical component of magnetic fields can be measured in the borehole, and the magnetic anomalies can be obtained by subtracting the Earth's magnetic field from the measurement. The magnetic anomalies of the pile are considered as vector sum of induced magnetization due to the Earth's magnetic field and remnant magnetization possessed by steel strings in the pile. The magnetic anomalies are used as input data for inversion from which the length, the magnetic moment per unit length, and the dip angle of the pile can be obtained. From the inversion of synthetic noisy data, and the data obtained from the field model test it is found that the driving depth of the pile can be determined as close to the order of measuring interval (5∼10㎝). It is also found that the resultant magnetic anomalies due to an individual steel string in the pile are almost same as those due to a group of steel strings located at the center of the pile. The magnetic logging method also can be used for locating reinforced bars, pipes, and steel casings.

Piles are often subjected to both axial and lateral loads. The nonlinear subgrade reaction method is widely used for the design of laterally loaded piles and in this approach the soil reaction is replaced with a series of independent nonlinear Winkler springs. In this study, Laterally loaded high strength H-piles were analyzed using a finite difference solution, and three p-y curve models with different k values(the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction, [FL
$\^$ -3/]) were evaluated using data obtained from various field tests, and another analysis method using Q$\sub$ g/ - y$\sub$ g/ curve was developed. The results of this analysis were compared with the measured values to assess their applicability. -
Model tests on free standing pile groups and piled footings with varying a pile spacing in two layered soils are carried out. The influence of pile cap on the behaviors of end bearing pile groups is analyzed by comparing the bearing behavior in piled footings with those in a single pile, a shallow footing(cap alone) and free standing pile groups. From the test results, it is found that the bearing characteristics of cap-soil-pile system are related with load levels and pile spacings. Before yield, the bearing resistance by cap is not fully mobilized, however, as the applied load increases, the bearing resistance of cap approaches to that of cap alone and settlement hardening occurs after yield due to the compaction caused by the contact pressure between cap and soil. By the cap-soil-pile interaction, shaft friction and point resistance of piles considerably increase with dependency of pile spacings. In two layered soil, the increasing effect of dilatancy in dense sandy soil adjacent to pile tips, increases the point resistance of pile.

Pile foundations have been widely used in civil engineering construction for many years. Structures subjected to large lateral loads usually have pile foundations as shallow foundations cannot sometimes support the moments on these structure. The purpose of this paper is to propose the p - multiplier factor (P
$\sub$ M/) based on the characteristics of behavior of laterally loaded group pile in homogeneous sand. For this, a series of model tests are performed and the composite analytical method proposed by author is used to the propose P$\sub$ M/. Based on the model test results of the large number of laterally loaded group piles, p - multiplier factors for homogeneous sand are proposed by back analysis under various condition of soil density, spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, number of pile, and spacing-to-diameter of pile. P - multiplier approach provides a simple but sufficient tool for characterizing the shadowing group effects of laterally loaded group pile. -
In this study the bearing capacity of the eccentrically loaded shallow footing is estimated by means of the upper bound method of limit analysis. In the case of applying the upper bound, the results depend on the failure mechanism. So the failure surface is correctly studied through the model test using sand. New method is proposed to estimate the bearing capacity of the eccentrically loaded shallow footing by means of the upper bound method to apply the failure mechanism based on the model test. The propriety of new method is verified by the results of various methods. And the influences of the variables eccentricity, embedment depth, variations of contact width factor by model test using sand are also studied in this paper

Granular compaction piled raft systems have been effectively used in soft ground foundation to improve not only settlement but also bearing capacity. In the present study, to examine the behavior characteristics and bulging failure zone on granular compaction piled raft system, carbon rod tests have been performed. The test results are compared with the zone of bulging failure and the effects of pile-pile interaction obtained from the analytical approaches. In addition, parametric studies are peformed with considering pile slenderness ratio, Poisson's ratio and load sharing ratio.

Using the large diameter (D = 2,500mm, L = 40m) batter steel pipe piles, designed as compression piles but used as reaction piles during the static compression load test of socketed test piles (D = 1,000mm, L = 40m), static pile load tests for large diameter instrumented rock-socketed piles were performed. The reaction steel pipe piles were driven 20m into the marine deposit and weathered rock layer and then l0m socketed with reinforced concrete through the weathered rock layer and into hard rock layer. Steel pipe and concrete in the steel pile part, and concrete and rebars in the socketed parts were instrumented to measure strains in each part. The pullout amounts of reaction pile heads were also measured with LVDT. During the static pile load test, total compressional load of about 20MN was loaded on the head of test piles, but load above 20MN was not loaded due to lack of loading capacity of loading system. Over the course of the study, maximum pullout amount up to 7mm was measured in the heads of reaction piles when loaded op to 10MN and 1mm of pullout amount was measured. More than 85% of pullout load was transfered in the residual weathered rock layer and about 10% in the soft rock layer, which was somewhat different transfer mechanism in the static compressional load tests.

Though there has been increasing use of large diameter drilled shaft as a foundation structure of bridges, current practice for quality control is to confirm the minimum required load carrying capacity during construction stage. For economic and appropriate design of drilled shaft, it is necessary to evaluate the load transfer mechanism by pile load tests during initial stage of construction and to use the test results as a feedback to a revision of initial design. In this paper, results of load tests peformed at several domestic sites are presented to investigate the load transfer characteristics of large diameter drilled shaft. It was found that most of the load on piles is sustained by shaft friction and that only small portion of the load reaches the bottom of the drilled shaft. Some test results of drilled shaft by Pile Driving Analyzer performed at same sites are also presented to compare the load transfer characteristics interpreted from static pile load tests.

Earthquakes not only produce additional load on the structures and underlying soil, but also change the strength characteristics of the soil. Therefore, in order to analyze soil structures for stability, the behaviour after earthquake must be considered. In this paper, a series of cyclic triaxial tests and monotonic triaxial tests were carried out to investigate the undrained shear strength and liquefaction strength characteristics of Nak-Dong River sand soils which were subjected to cyclic loading. The sample was consolidated in the first stage and then subjected to stress controlled cyclic loading with 0.1Hz. After the cyclic loading, the cyclic-induced excess pore water pressure was dissipated by opening the drainage valve and the sample was reconsolidated to the initial effective mean principal stress(p/sub c/'). After reconsolidation, the monotonic loading or cyclic loading were applied to the specimen. In the results, the undrained shear strength and liquefaction strength characteristics depended on the pore pressure ratio(Ur=U/p/sub c/'). The volume change following reconsolidation can be a function of cyclic-induced excess pore water pressure and the maximum double amplitude of axial strain.

A new stress path testing scheme with back pressure equalization process is proposed, to compute the settlement of clay soils based on their probable deformation mode. The proposed testing scheme minimizes the efforts for testing, otherwise numerous testing works are required to simulate the probable stress paths in the field. Furthermore, the proposed testing scheme can supply anisotropic stress paths for consolidation which cannot be possible in a conventional way. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed testing scheme was investigated and confirmed with test results on remolded kaolinite clay soils. Conclusively, it is suggested that the proposed testing scheme is a very effective tool to compute settlement of clay soils and it is also very useful to investigate the anisotropic characteristics of deformation of clay soils.

In constructions of dams and ports structure, gravels are used as principle structural materials. Gravels have different material property compared with other materials like soil and concretes, etc. For example, material properties of gravels obtained from normal triaxial compression test are usually overestimated due to scale and penetration effects. Also, material properties of gravels under dynamic loads are the main interest when structural behavior of rockfill dam under earthquake loads is analyzed. The development of large triaxial compression apparatus is needed for the better estimation of material property of gravel. This paper reports work in progress to development of large triaxial compression apparatus.

In this study, the swelling characteristics of reconstituted clayey soil were investigated by STD and CRS test. The strain rate during loading was constant i.e. 0.05 %/min, 0.03 %/min and during unloading was varied in proportion to 1/1, 1/5, 1/10 and 1/15 of strain rate during loading. From this study the following conclusions were obtained; (1) There were similar values, especially, during unloading in case of 1/10 or 1/15 of strain rate during loading and the test results between STD and CRS were much to be alike. (2) The cross point of effective stress versus excess pore water pressure ratio curve, was increased during unloading, while the stress level of the cross point was decreased. The stress level can be separated into two zones according to the swelling index named Cs1 and Cs2. From the test results, the values of Cs1 were approximately constant irrespective of strain rate during unloading, but the values of Cs2 were much influenced by strain rate. (3) In CRS consolidation tests, it was found that unloading strain rate did not affect on the existence of zone.

It is very important to evaluate the reliable nonlinear modulus characteristics of soils not only in the analysis of geotechnical structures under working stress conditions but also for the soil dynamic problems. For the evaluation of modulus characteristics of soils, various tests have been mostly employed in laboratory. However, different testing techniques are likely to have different ranges of reliable strain measurements, different applied stress level, and different loading frequencies, and the modulus of soils can be affected by these variables. For reliable evaluation, therefore, those effects on the modulus need to be considered, and measured values should be effectively adjusted to actual conditions where the soil is working. In this paper, to evaluate the modulus characteristics of soils, laboratory testing such as free-free resonant column (FF-RC), resonant column (RC), torsional shear (TS), static TX, and cyclic M/sub R/ tests were performed. The effects of strain amplitude, loading frequency, loading cycles, confining pressure, density, and water content on modulus were investigated. It is shown that the FF-RC test, which is simple and inexpensive testing technique, can provide a reliable estimation of small strain Young's modulus (E/sub max/), and the modulus evaluated by various laboratory tests are comparable to each other fairly well when the effects of these factors are properly taken into account.

We developed large diameter sampler (we called KICT type large diameter sampler) to obtain undisturbed clay and sand samples. In-situ test carried out in the In-Chon international airport and Kim-Hae. Also we obtained undisturbed sample with a hydraulic piston sampler in the nearly site and carried out unconfined compression test, consolidation test and triaxial test. The result, unconfined compression strength, secant modules, preconsolidation pressure and undrained shear strength of samples to obtain KICT type large diameter sampler are larger than that of samples to obtain hydraulic piston sampler. But failure strains and volume changes at the consolidation of samples to obtain KICT type large diameter sampler are smaller than that of samples to obtain hydraulic piston sampler

In other to examine the compressibility characteristics of cohesive soils in the mouth of the Nakdong river, the oedometer tests were peformed on undisturbed and reconstituted samples obtained by continuous boring typically at 3 different sites. It is meaningful to compare the consolidation behavior of natural clays with a reference state because the natural clays are depending on the stress history, sedimentary environment and geological history. In this study, the insitu state of the Pusan clays was investigated using the concepts of ISL(Nagaraj, 2000) and ICL and SCL(Burland, 1990). And for the purpose of confirming the existence of the underconsolidated clays, a standpipe type piezometer test and a dissipation test by piezocone were performed at their sites. Consequently, the Pusan clays were evaluated as normally consolidated clays.

Parameters that represent the characteristic of consolidation have been determined by the oedometer tests. They are varied by the process of sampling and transportation, accuracy of apparatus, process of sample trimming and the skill of engineers. Also, it is difficult to grasp what factor exert a influence on the parameters. In this study, Slurry Rowe Cell Tests were peformed to evaluate the disturbance. Using the plot of e - log p which obtained from Rowe Cell test results, we compared the swelling indexes at the stress relief and the last loading stage. With that result, we tried to presume the disturbance of the 330 oedometer tests. The plot of compression-swelling index at the stress relief considerably scattered but at the last step of load shows a correlations between them. And the plot of depth-p
$\sub$ c/ shows a correlation with the different swelling indexes, but not in the LL-p$\sub$ c/. Consequently, it is considered that the disturbance of the consolidation tests can be presumed by the comparison of the difference of swelling index. -
The characteristics and prediction model of the shear strength for unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the initial water content on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests were carried out varying the initial water content, and the applicability of existing prediction models for the unsaturated shear strength was testified. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the initial water content. A sample compacted in the lower initial water content needs a higher suction to get the same degree of saturation while the shear strength of a sample with the lower initial water content displays a lower value. In order to apply the existing prediction models of the unsaturated shear strength to granite residual soils, a correction coefficient, α, on the internal friction angle, ø'was added.

In this study, the Non-Destructive Testing Equipment was introduced for the compaction control and the evaluation of pavements properties and the developing process was showed. Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD) is a system for performing non-destructive testing of pavement and the other foundation structures. The system develops forces from the acceleration caused by the arrest of a falling weight and these forces are transmitted onto the surface of a structure causing it to deflect much as it would due to the weight of a passing wheel load. The structure will bend downward and exhibit a deflection basin. FWD uses a set of velocity sensors to determine the amplitude and shape of the deflection basin. The deflection response, when related to the applied loading, can provide information about the strength and condition of the various elements of the test structure. In this study, a computer program was developed that can be used to evaluate pavement and foundation structures from the data produced by FWD. The Falling Weight Deflectometer, non-destructive testing equipment, is increasing used at the whole world.

The index properties of cohesive soils play an important role to examine entire tendency of soil properties. Especially, the Atterberg limits have a good correlation with compression and shear strength of cohesive soils. However, these values strongly depend on their testing methods. In this study, for Pusan clays the Atterberg limits were peformed under different conditions; for example, four kinds of specimen preparation, two kinds of testing equipment, and four kinds of estimating method. And a laboratory vane test was peformed to compare the undrained shear strength with that of the fall cone test. As experimental results, the value of liquid limit performed for oven-dried sample, followed in ASTM D4318, underestimated by about 10% compared to those of another three methods, irrespective to the used equipments. But the value of plastic limit was not influenced by sample preparation methods and equipments. The liquid limits by one-point methods(Leroueil et al., 1996; Nagaraj et al., 1981) were agreed well with those of different methods. Finally, the undrained shear strength by laboratory vane test was relatively larger than that of fall cone test, and the relationship between both showed a bad trend.

Spilling of petroleum hydrocarbons such as gasoline, motor oils, and diesel fuel from underground storage tanks (USTs) is a major source of contamination to ground water and soils. In response to the need of developing an effective and economical cleanup technique, this study investigates the effectiveness of using sonication to enhance the soil flushing method. The study involves laboratory testing, and the testing was conducted using a specially designed and fabricated device to determine the effect of sonication on contaminant removal. The sonication was applied at 20 kHz frequency under different power levels. Test soil was Joomoonjin Sand, and diesel fuel was used as a contaminant of soil flushing test. The results of the investigation show that sonication enhanced the contaminant removal from soils significantly, and the degree of enhancement varied with power levels of sonication. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that the flushing method with sonication has a great potential to become an effective method for removing petroleum hydrocarbons from the contaminated ground.

This paper presents measured deformation of geomembrane installed on slopes of a landfill. The layout of geosynthetics installed on landfill slopes as required by regulations is composed of, in typical, geocomposite, geomembrane, geosynthetic clay liner in turn from the slope. An effort was made to better understand the sources of external forces acting on geosynthetics and their interactions. The results of a field observation indicated that tensile stresses induced on geomebrane were far less in magnitude than predicted by the design method employing mass equilibrium of waste. This was mainly because external forces acting on slopes were not transferred from geocomposite to underlying geomembrane. A simple, but rather rational method for assessing the stability of geosynthetics against tensile stresses was proposed. This method is based on a hypothesis that external forces acting on geosynthetics are the results of downdrag of waste during waste compaction.

There has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering projects where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns. Many of these projects involve some investigation on contaminant around unplaned waste landfill. In this study, investigation and test on contamination characteristics of wastes dumped at municipal site were carried out. Testing wastes were sampled at this site. Sampled wastes were divided into waste itself and soil to analysis the characteristics of waste and soil. As a result of this study, the concentration of soil and waste were investigated. And measured concentration were compared with related concentration criteria.

Waste landfill consists of cover layer, glass, robber, sheet, food waste, etc and is in very loose state. So, the proper method must be applied to ground improvement of waste landfill according to its characteristics and conditions. In this paper, analysis for field tests as static loading test, bearing capacity test were peformed. In result, PG pile method proved to be effective and economic, because it affected increase of end bearing capacity, the prevention of differential settlement and over 20% increase of density by expansion of pile.

Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement was measured as a function of some selected construction variables that are often encountered in practice. They are initial (or compaction) water content, delayed compaction after mixing, and repeated freezing and thawing. Sandy and clayey soils were used. The hardening agent used was a cement based soil stabilizer consisting of 80% of ordinary Portland cement and 20% of a combination of supplementary materials. Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement with varying initial water content was, in trend, similar to that of compacted clay. Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement decreased with increasing initial water content and reached its minimum when compacted wet of optimum water content. Pore size distributions of soil cement at different initial water contents were analyzed using mercury intrusion porosimetry. The analysis showed that dryer condition led to the formation of larger pores with lesser total pore volume; smaller pores with larger total pore volume at wetter condition. Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement increased by orders in magnitude when specimen underwent delayed compaction of longer than 4 hours after mixing and repeated freezing and thawing.

Batch test and column test were performed to develop the design factors for permeable reactive barriers(PRBs) against ammonium and heavy metals, Clinoptilolite, a kind of natural zeolites having excellent cation exchange capacity(CEC), was choosen for the reacting materials through the ion-exchange mechanism. In the batch test, the reactivity of clinoptilolite for ammonium, lead, and copper was examined varying the initial concentration of contaminants(ammonium: 20, 40, 80 ppm, heavy metals: 10, 20, 40 ppm) and the particle size of clinoptilolites(0-0.15, 0.42-0.85, 1-1.25 mm). The reactivity is increasing as the initial concentration decrease and particle size decrease. In the column test, the permeability and the reactivity of the specimens were examined using flexible-wall permeameter. Specimens were made of clinoptilolite and Jumunjin-sand with 20 : 80 weight ratio varying particle size of clinoptilolite. The maximum permeability(1
${\times}$ 10$\^$ -4/-5${\times}$ 10$\^$ -5/cm/s) was achieved in the specimen made of 0.42-0.85 mm clinoptilolite and sand. -
The feasibility study on paraffin binder as a solidifying agent of digested sewage sludge cake was peformed. The availability of paraffin binder as a solidifying agent was investigated by several tests. Based on the tests, it is ascertained that paraffin binder with a small amount of quicklime and fly ash enhances the solidification of digested sewage sludge cake. Paraffin binder shortened the drying time of digested sewage sludge cake and solidified sludge with paraffin was not dissolved in water again. Also, the unconfined compressive strength of solidified sludge with paraffin increases.

This paper presents fundamental characteristics of a copper slag when used geotechnical materials. For this study, it was conducted laboratory tests such as compaction, large direct shear, hydraulic conductivity, leaching, TDR, frost heave test and so on. The results of laboratory tests shown gradually increase in draining capacity and shearing resistance more slag mixing. The unfrozen water in temperature changes and frost heave amounts in condition of -17
$^{\circ}C$ appeared to decrease. Also, toxicity tests based on the domestic solid waste regulations were satisfied with nonhazardous. By this research results, a copper slag mixed with granite soil may been used as granular base and embankment materials, fill etc. -
This research is about the relationship of electroosmotic drainage and zeta potential. Two laboratory experiments were conducted, at first a constant 16 voltage was applied to the cylindrical consolidated specimen of 10cm in diameter, 16cm in length at the concentration of 0, 500, 3000ppm Pb(II) and electroosmotic flow was measured for 12days. Then, zeta potential of kaolinite suspension was measured at the same concentration of electroosmotic permeability experiments in the range of pH from 2 to 14. From the result of this study, it was shown that zeta potential was dependent on the concentration of electrolyte and pH, was proportional to coefficient of electroosmotic permeability. According to the compared result of electroosmotic drainage, as the concentration of Pb(II) was low, the negative value of zeta potential was high and electroosmotic total flow was much.

In tunnel excavation by blast beneath the surface structures in urban area, the characteristics of ground vibration induced by blast and its influence on surface structures are analyzed by the field test and the numerical analysis on dynamic behaviors of the structure. According to the field test on the propagating characteristics of blast vibration through the rock mass and the concrete foundation pile. the attenuation index of peak particle velocity with distance shows the range of 1.7∼2.0 for the rock mass and the range of 2.0∼2.3 for the concrete pile. This shows that the blast vibration reduces more rapidly in the concrete pile. It is known from the numerical analysis on dynamic behavior of the structure that the coefficient of response, velocity ratio of structure response to input wave, is different according to the story of the structure. It can be said from this research that the characteristics of the ground vibration and the dynamic behavior of the structure should be well evaluated and be considered as important factors for safe blasting design especially in underground excavation at shallow depth in urban area.

Ground movements are inevitably caused by tunnel construction in soft ground. In the design and construction of tunnels in urban areas, the potential effects of buried pipelines by ground movements are one of the important design cosiderations. Generally, the most common modes of failure of buried pipelines due to ground movements are tensile fracture of main pipelines, rotation angle and pull-out displacement at joints. In the parametric study, a wide range of conditions were considered, including tunnel diameter(D), tunnel depth(Z
$\sub$ 0/), volume loss(V$\sub$ ι/) and inflection point(i). Based on this results, design charts, which are applicable to assess potential damage of buried pipelines associated ground movements due to tunnelling, are developed. -
The reliable estimation of the system parameters and the accurate prediction of the system behavior are important to design tunnel safely and economically. Therefore, the back analysis using the field measurements data is useful to evaluate the geotechnical parameter for tunnel. In the back analysis method, the selection of initial value and uncertainty of field measurements influence significantly on the analysis result. In this paper, to overcome uncertainty of field measurements, we performed the back analysis using the displacement data gained at each step of excavation and support.

Current design practice for the prediction of tunnelling-induced ground movements depends on empirical methods, which are based on many assumptions and simplification of the modeling. Some discrepancies between the predictions and the measurements of ground movements regarding adjacent structures are inevitable. In order to investigate tunnel-induced ground movements affect on the settlement of existing structures as well as existing structures affect tunnel-induced ground movement, 2-D elasto-plastic finite element analysis are performed. The following influencing factors such as load of the structures, the width of structures, its bending and axial stiffness, its position relative to the tunnel are considered in the numerical analysis.

Rock Mass Rating has been widely applied to the underground tunnel excavation and many other practical problems in rock engineering. However, Rock Mass Rating is hard to make out because it is difficult to estimate each valuation items through all kind of field situations and items of RMR have interdependence. So the experts of tunnel assessment have problems with rating rock mass. In this study, using multivariate analysis based on domestic data(1011EA) of water conveyance tunnel, we presented rock mass rating system which is objective and easy to use. The constituents of RMR are decided to RQD, condition of discontinuities, groundwater conditions, orientation of discontinuities, intact rock strength, spacing of discontinuities in important order. In each step, we proposed the best multiple regression model for RMR system. And using data which have been collected at other site, we examined that presented multiple regression model was useful.

Characteristics of joint orientation, length, spacing and their distribution are very important factors for slope stability, Especially, the effect of joint spacing is an essential factor of slope stability. This study is to analyze the effect of joint spacing in cases of sliding and toppling, which is a typical failure mode. Joint spacing can divided into vertical spacing(spacing) and horizontal spacing(gap). And then, the spacing/length ratio of joint directly affect rock slope failure. When the ratio is below 0.05, the possibility of failure is rapidly increased. In case of toppling, the possibility of failure depends on the ratio of spacing to height of slope ratio slope. As the ratio decreases, the possibility of toppling failure increased. The critical ratio of spacing to height of slope is determined by the dip angle of the slope and the orientation of joint sets.

136 cut slopes which extends from Namyangju to Chunchon city along the 46th national highway were investigated to analyze the influence factors affecting slope instability. Geologic and geotechnical conditions were examined and the detailed investigation were carried out for fifty five failed slopes. failure mode (wedge failure, planar failure, circular failure, sheet eroison and rock falls) are examined with respect to slope inclination, rock type, weathering grade and discontinuity patterns. It is suggested that the failure modes and their dimensions have relations to the morphology and geologic conditions of the slopes. Wedge failure has highest is the most frequent failure mode and falls, sheet erosions, planar failures and circular in descending order of failure percentage. Wedge failure is most dominant failure type over all lithology except quartzite formation. In slopes of well foliated and banded gneiss, failure ratio of wedge is up to 50% ca. Failure ratio(number of rock fall/number of total failure) of rock fall increases with increase fo slope inclinations and decrease of weathering grade. Dimension analyses of failed slopes shows wedge and circular failure has higher value of D/L and D/H than planar failure and sheet erosion.

The investigated cut-slope is located in Odong-Ri, Hoebuk-Myun, Boeun-Gun and composed of quartzite and phyllitic rocks (approximately 80 meters in length and 25 meters in height). During the investigation, the groundwater which was inferred to the natural pipe of slope was continuously flowing in the upper part of slope. The investigation for discontinuity properties in this area was carried out to decide the rock mass rating and strength parameters. To analyze the stability of cut-slope, lower equal-area hemisphere projection method was used. And laboratory test was done to evaluate engineering properties of soil which was sampled in the non-failure and failure area The inferred causes of cut-slope failure are the geometric relationship between the orientation of cut-slope and geological structures such as joints, faults which is distributed in the slope. And direct cause of failure is the increase of water content due to the heavy rainfall.

Rock slopes along the road or railroad are affected by temperature and therefore experienced iterative freezing-thawing process between winter and early spring. The purpose of this study is to analyze the stability of rock slopes which are influenced by the deterioration due to the freezing-thawing. The analysis is the homogenization method which evaluates the strength property of discontinuous rock mass, and as a strength failure criterion, Drucker-Prager failure criterion is used. The deterioration property of real rock is obtained by a freezing-thawing laboratory test of tuff and this property of deterioration is quantitated and used as a basic data of stability analysis for rock mass. To evaluate the deterioration depth due to the freezing-thawing in situ rock slope, one dimensional heat conductivity equation is used and as the result I can find that the depth of which is affected by a temperature. After the freezing-thawing depth of model slope is determined, we analyze the pattern of rock mass stength value of rock slope model which excesses the limit of self-load.

This study performs a series of Triaxial Compression Test for clay-sand composite specimens changing area replacement ratio. Purpose of the test is to conform the propriety of weighted average method in estimating shear strength of the composite ground. The test results show that measured values of shear strength of composite specimens are larger by 20∼30% than those from estimation using the current weighted average method. It is thought that the differences are from pseudo-overconsolidation behavior of composite specimens.

Seismic refraction survey was peformed for 10 lines along NE-SW and NW-SE directions above Nampoong gallery at Makyo-ri, Dogye, Samcheok, Kangwon-do. 48 geophones were laid in line with the interval of 1m, and a 5Kg hammer was used as a source at 5 points for each line. Data processing was done using reciprocal time method, GRM, and traveltime tomography which utilizes wavefront expansion method for forward process and SIRT for inversion. The result shows that the first layer has its lower boundary between 3.49m and 8.88m. The P-wave velocity of the first and the second layer were estimated as 270 360m/s and 1550 1940m/s respectively. When the boundary of the first and second layer is smooth enough and the velocity difference is large enough, GRM has little advantage over reciprocal time method. The result of reciprocal method and traveltime tomography shows consistency. The northeast part of the boundary has syncline structure, which is similar to the topography above. This implies that the collapse of the cavities of Nampoong gallery result in the subsidence of the ground surface. The subsidence is in progress across the Youngdong railroad, therefore a proper reinforcement work is required.

The cost needed for the construction and management of highways in the whole nation is rapidly growing so the research that can decrease the cost is required. However, most of the highway specs have simply converted from those of other countries, including USA. Therefore, some of our design and construction specs were not the optimum ones based on our own situation, requiring a research under the actual traffic and environment of our nation. The use of test road develops many aspects of highway engineering. Those are evaluation of construction materials, a general overview of korea pavement design and serviceability under the actual traffic and environmental condition of the nation. It is also economical and efficient compared to the trial construction of each item in spreaded form. A test road, 7.7km long with two lanes, is being constructed on the Inner Central Expressway. In this test road, 2.7km is planned for asphalt pavement and 3.4km is planned for concrete pavement. Three test bridges and five earth retaining structures will be included in the test road. Based on the master plan, the major performance was progressing such as detailed research modules of each area, preliminary research for the future research, sensor surveys for the behavior analyses of pavements and structures with installation methods and data acquisition systems, the foundation research of Integrated Instrumentation System and the Management Plan for automated measurement. Some area(structure research division, geotechnical research division) was designed the instrumentation plan because some instrument sensors must be installed during the construction of the test road. And then the instrumentation plan of each area was enforcing because a large majority of the instrument sensors must be installed after the construction of the test road. The field surveys with material property tests and pilot instrumentation test with sensor tests was also performing in accordance with the construction in the field.

The strength properties of Light-Weighted Soils(LWS) mixed with Expanded Polystrene(E.P.S) are studied. Test results show that when the initial water contents of dredged soils are under 135% and the cement contents are above 1%, Light-Weight Soils are in the appropriate strength range of 2.0 to 4.0kg/㎠. However, E.P.S contents had a little affects on the strength properties of LWS. In the view of E.P.S diagram's effects on LWS, which have expand ratio of 25, 35, 45 and 60, further studies considering of physical properties of original E.P.S beads are needed.

In this study, the influence of groundwater variation and surface settlement adjacent to the excavation site of subway station on
$\bigcirc$ $\bigcirc$ Gas station and the$\bigcirc$ $\bigcirc$ building is analized. Measurement data of surface settlement, horizontal deformation and groundwater level are used to verify the results of Caspe analytical method and FLAC numerical analysis. Variation of groundwater level adjacent to the excavation site is modelled by the 3-D groundwater flow program, MODFLOW. The results of both the analytical method and the numerical method were quite close to the measurement data of surface settlement. -
Rockfall protection fence which is used for mitigation of rockfall hazard, has been constructed without consideration of lithology, height and dip angle of rock slope. However, those factors should be considered for the construction of the protection fence. In addition, the protection fence should be evaluated its performance by in-situ test in order to utilize the fence effectively. This is the first full sized rockfall test in Korea. For this test, the rock cut slope whose height is about 20 m and dip angle is 65
$^{\circ}$ has been chosen. Based on the preliminary simulation procedure, four different concrete balls (0.5 ton, 1.0 ton, 2.0 ton and 5.0 ton) were prepared and four different types of protection fence were constructed. The results of this test will be utilized in the establishment of rockfall protection fence construction manual. -

The horizontal drain method by installing drains horizontally in the ground is often used to expedite the dispersion of pore water and to increase the strength of dredged soft clay under the action of gravity or vacuum. In this study a numerical analysis method is developed to predict the consolidation process of soft ground with horizontal drains. One-dimensional self-weight consolidation theory is extended tn three-dimensions] theory with appropriate boundary conditions of horizontal drains. In the condition of pore water drainage by gravity, the behavior of the dredged clay with horizontal drains is compared with that of the clay without drains. The influence of design factors of drains on consolidation process is also analyzed.

Consolidation of the ground surrounding the sand piles is delayed by well resistance and smear effect. This study is executed to understand the factors that affect the characteristics of consolidation. This was accomplished by utilizing the estimated and measured values of the soil properties through the monitoring of the ground surrounding the sand piles. When it is assumed that the horizontal coefficient is equal to the vertical coefficient of consolidation, the estimated values is exceedingly similar to the measured values. The properties of the initially disturbed soil by the sand pile installation seemed to improve through the process of consolidation with the passage of time. From the results of the analysis of the settlement measurement, the measured values occurred about 60~90% of the predicted values. Considering the initial radical compression deformation, according to the theory of cavity expansion, the difference between the two appears to be in good agreement. In this study, to understand the behavioral characteristics of the ground surrounding the sand piles requires estimation through considering the initial radial compression as well as smear effect of the soil disturbance and well resistance.

Weak and soft compressible clay deposits are commonly found in natural subgrade soils. These Soils need to be stabilized for using the subbase materials of highway constructions. This paper presents that a chemical treatment using chemical additives comprised of sulfate(SO
$_4$ ) and chloride(Cl) is evaluated for stabilizing soft clay deposits and lime. The physical and mechanical characteristics of soil-lime and additives are described by means of a laboratory study. The study results indicate that the presence of chlorides encouraged the efficiency of lime stabilization, and the use of calcium chloride with quicklime is the best additive for improving soil behavior. The treated soil with lime-calcium chloride can have the adaptability to the subbase materials of highway constructions. -
The problems of discontinuous layer interface are very important in the algorithm and programming for the analysis of multi-layered consolidation using a numerical analysis, finite difference method(F.D,M.). Better results can be obtained by the process for discontinuous layer interface, since it can help consolidation analysis to model the actual ground Explicit method is simple for analysis algorithm and convenient for use except for applying the operator Crank-Nicolson method represents implicit method, which have different analysis method according to weighting factor. This method uses different algorithm according to dimension. And, this paper uses alternative direction implicit method. The purpose of this paper provides an efficient computer algorithm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method which account for multi-layered soils with confined aquifer to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically.

Artificial neural networks are efficient computing techniques that are widely used to solve complex problems in many fields. In this study, a back-propagation neural network model for estimating a consolidation behavior of clay from soil parameter, site investigation data and the first settlement curve is proposed. The training and testing of the network were based on a database of 63 settlement curve from two different sites. Five different network models were used to study the ability of the neural network to predict the desired output to increasing degree of accuracy. The study showed that the neural network model predicted a consolidation behavior of clay reasonably well.

This study presented the new method for evaluating the coefficient of consolidation by using inflection point method which was based on the fact that time factor, T corresponding to the inflection point of a semilogarithmic plot of a time curve is fixed and equals to T = 0.405 at 70% consolidation. In the proposed method, the next load increment is applied as soon as the necessary time required to identify the inflection point. Thus, the coefficient of consolidation may be easily evaluated. The time required to complete the testing using this rapid consolidation method could be as low as 1.5-3 hours compared with 1 or 2 weeks in the case of the conventional consolidation test.

The traditional concept after Terzaghi was that consolidation was the dissipation process of pore water pressure compatible to external loading which was generated immediately after the loading. However, a theory of one-dimensional consolidation based on elasto-viscous liquid model proposed by Yoshikuni(1994) explained that the process of primary and secondary consolidation was considered to be not a simple process of dissipation of pore water pressure but a simultaneous process of dissipation and generation by external loading. This study attempts to demonstrate general consolidation behaviour of clayey soils including effects of consolidation history, load increment and thickness of cohesive layer by one-dimensional Finite Difference Method(F.D.M) analysis from the viewpoint of elasto-viscous consolidation theory.

This study presents methodology and tools for remote measurement of the orientation of the rock parting surfaces. Two close circuit video camera capture the pictures of a rock excavation surface while a laser beam scans the surface. Positions of the laser beams in the two digital images are recognized by image processing. Using the stereoscopic concept, three dimensional coordinations of the rock surface and the orientation of the rock parting planes are calculated. Point, cross and line type laser beams are tested for better image processing results and measurement accuracy of the coordinates. According to a simple accuracy test, cross beam show better results than the point beam. However, line beam show more promising results for the measurement of the rock parting surfaces.

The fluid generally flows through fractures in crystalline rocks where most of underground storage facilities are constructed because of their low hydraulic conductivities. The fractured rock is better to be conceptualized with a discrete fracture concept, rather continuum approach. In the aspect of fluid flow in underground, the simultaneous flow of groundwater and gas should be considered in the cases of generation and leakage of gas in nuclear waste disposal facilities, air sparging process and soil vapor extraction for eliminating contaminants in soil or rock pore, and pneumatic fracturing for the improvement of permeability of rock mass. For the purpose of appropriate analysis of groundwater-gas flow, this study presents an unsteady-state multi-phase FEM fracture network simulator. Numerical simulation has been also conducted to investigate the hydraulic head distribution and air tightness around Ulsan LPG storage cavern. The recorded hydraulic head at the observation well Y was -5 to -10 m. From the results obtained by the developed model, it shows that the discrete fracture model yielded hydraulic head of -10 m, whereas great discrepancy with the field data was observed in the case of equivalent continuum modeling. The air tightness of individual fractures around cavern was examined according to two different operating pressures and as a result, only several numbers of fractures neighboring the cavern did not satisfy the criteria of air tightness at 882 kPa of cavern pressure. In the meantime, when operating pressure is 710.5 kPa, the most areas did not satisfy air tightness criteria. Finally, in the case of gas leaking from cavern to the surrounding rocks, the resulted hydraulic head and flowing pattern was changed and, therefore, gas was leaked out from the cavern ceiling and groundwater was flowed into the cavern through the walls.

The directional response of strength and deformation on the rocks acting by external loads is called by strength and deformability anisotropy, respectively. Peak strength and its failure criteria of anisotro rocks have been studied and reported. Many authors have investigated in detail the behavior of triaxial peak strength of anisotropic rocks(Jaeger 1960, McLamore & Gray 1967, Hoek & Brown 1980, Ramamurthy & Rao 1985). They concluded that the triaxial strength of anisotropic rocks varies according to the inclination of discontinuity in specimens. And, the minimun triaxial strength occurs in the specmen with 60° of inclination angle ; and specimens with 0° or 90° inclination have maximum triaxial strength. Based on the experimental result, the behavior triaxial strength is investigated. The triaxial compression tests due to the angle bedding plane have been conducted and the material constants, 'm' and 's', cohesion and angle of friction and nonlinear strength parameters to fit for the failure criterion were derived from the regression analysis. And, the experimental date are employed to examine three existing failure criteria for peak strength, provided by Jaeger, McLamore and Hoek & Brown and Ramamurthy & Rao. For a shale, the suitability of the failure criteiria of triaxial peak strength for anisotropic rocks is discussed.

The shear behavior of sawtoothed artificial joints grouted with cement milk was investigated in the laboratory under constant normal stress conditions. Tests were conducted on joints with asperities having inclinations of 16.7
$^{\circ}$ and 26.6$^{\circ}$ , compresive strengths having 15MPa and 47MPa under a given range of normal stresses varying from 0.76 to 1.91 MPa and at a free condition of pitching, rolling and dilatancy. Results show that the effect of asperities on shear strength increase is significant up to asperity height to grout thickness (t/a) ratio of 0.3∼1.0. Increase of cohesion is the main cause of shear strength increase in cement grouted sawtoothed artificial joints. -
For nonhomogeneous and anisotropic rocks such as schist, shale, etc, a method to determine the anisotropic elastic constants was proposed. Many authors have investigated in detail the behavior elastic constants of anisotropy rocks(Pinto 1970, Amadei 1983, 1992, Amadei & Savage 1989). They concluded that equations of elastic constants E
$_1$ , E$_2$ and G$_2$ can be derived from the measured strains in arbitrary three directions. And, modulus of elasticity varies according to the inclination of discontinuity in specimens. If we attach three strain gages in accordance with the directions of anisotropy on the rock specimen under uni-axial compression and diametral compression tests, anisotropy elastic constants can be determined by these equations. With this method, the degree of anisotropy will be easily evaluated by simple laboratory test. This paper presents the results of elastic constants due to the angle of bedding planes of anisotropic rock, such as shale, in uni-axial compression and diametral compression tests -
This paper resorts to rock mass rating and rock mass quality to draw value based on the evaluation of rock and to draw interrelation formula in relation to rock mass quality, A comparative analysis was given of survey values reported in the existing documents. This paper has tried to find out the relationship between RMR and Q System for the sake of choosing rational reinforcing patterns and of the safety of tunnels. The results run as follow: RMR=8.251n(Q)+43.83. This paper has also tried to find out the relationship between RMR and Q System by using Fuzzy Approximate Reasoning Concept. We suggest that those in charge should not depend on a single system only after evaluating the classification of rocks, and compare one result with another for the good of keeping track of the condition of base rocks in a better way.

The shear strength of rock discontinuities is very important in many rock engineering project including analysis of tunnel and slope. But shear strength of rock that acquired through discontinuity shear test is different from soil shear test and more complex. Shear strength is effected by the factors which are various, but it is the best influence of filling material and joint roughness. In this research, we studied shear strength characters of natural joint of phillite that was placed importance on joint roughness, JRC is less low than 8.
