Methods to prepare novel second-order nonlinear optical (2O-NLO) materials composed of all-silica zeolite (silicalite-1) and a series of 2O-NLO molecules having high second order hyperpolarizability constants (${\beta}$ values) are reviewed. These methods include the development of novel methods to incorporate a series of hemicyanine (HC) molecules into the channels of silicaite-1 films in uniform orientations. The first method is to incorporate HC molecules tethered with long alkyl chains (octadecyl or longer) into the silicalite-1 channels with the long alkyl chain side first through the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the long alky chains and the silicalite-1 channels. The second method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with a medium length alkyl chain (nonyl) into the silicalite-1 channels with the medium length alkyl chain side first through hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the medium length alky chain in the photoexcited state and the silicalite-1 channels. The third method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with propionic acid into the silicalite-1 channels with the propionic acid side last mediated by a tetrabultylammonium cation ion-paired to the propionate unit. A method to prepare a novel third-order nonlinear optical (3O-NLO) material composed of zeolite-Y and PbS or PbSe quantum dots is also reviewed. This Account thus describes a promising new direction to which the search for highly sensitive 2O-NLO and 3O-NLO materials has to be conducted and a new direction to which zeolite research and applications have to be expanded.

In this study, a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres was fabricated using emulsion solvent evaporation technique. During the procedure fabrication, some parameters process have effected on the formation of micro-carriers. The structure and morphology of micro-carriers were evaluated by SEM observation. Beside, heparin incorporated into microspheres was determined using toluidine blue method. Specifically, the effects of some parameters process such as ultrasonic levels, PLGA concentrations and freeze-dry times on the size, structure, porous formation and heparin entrapment of micro-carriers were studied carefully. We found that, the morphology and structure of carriers were influenced by the all above parameters. The diameter of the carriers varied from 20 to 400 ${\mu}M$ depending on experimental conditions. At suitable freeze-dry time, the pores were automatically formation on surface of microspheres with a significantly in the numbers of pore. After heparin incorporated porous PLGA microspheres, it was suggested that the highly heparin incorporated into porous PLGA microspheres could enhance of angiogenesis for tissue regeneration easily.

A series of new polymers containing 1,2,3-triazoles were synthesized and their structures and properties were characterized by FT-IR, $^1H$ NMR, TGA, DSC and GPC. The results showed that the polymers modified by alkyl groups had good solubility, thermal stability and reasonable molecular weights. It was also demonstrated that the properties of fluorine-containing polymers were seriously affected by fluorine atoms with hydrophobic and chemical proof properties.

New spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluorene] (SBFF)-based blue host materials, 9-phenyl-SBFF (BH-4P) and 5,9-diphenyl-SBFF (BH-6DP), were successfully prepared by spiro-formation of 9-phenyl-7H-benzo[c]fluoren-7-one with 2-bromobiphenyl via lithiation and reaction of 5,9-dibromo-SBFF with phenylboronic acid through the Suzuki reaction, respectively. Diphenyl-[4-(2-[1,1;4,1]terphenyl-4-yl-vinyl)-phenyl]-amine (BD-1) and N,N-diphenyl-N',N'-diphenyl-SBFF-5,9-diamine (BD-6DPA) were used as dopant materials. Blue OLEDs with the configuration ITO/N,N'-bis-[4-(di-m-tolylamino)phenyl]-N,N'-diphenylbiphenyl-4,4'-diamine (DNTPD)/bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenyl]benzidine (NPB)/host:5% dopant/SFC-137/Al-LiF were prepared from the two host materials doped with BD-1 and BD-6DPA dopants and the devices composed of BH-4P and BH-6DP doped with BD-6DPA showed blue EL spectra at 458 and 463 nm at 7 V and luminance efficiencies of 4.58 and 4.88 cd/A, respectively.

The protection effect of a $ZrO_2$ coating layer on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film was characterized. A wide and smooth $LiCoO_2$ thin film offers sufficient opportunity for careful observation of the reaction at the interface between cathode (coated and uncoated) and electrolyte. The formation of a $ZrO_2$ coating on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film was confirmed by secondary ion mass spectrometry. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the surface morphologies of coated and uncoated films before and after cycling. A $ZrO_2$-coated $LiCoO_2$ film showed a higher discharge capacity and rate capability than an uncoated film. This may be associated with a surface protection effect of the coating. The surface of a pristine film was damaged during cycling, whereas the coated film maintained a relatively clear surface under the same measurement conditions. This result clearly demonstrates the protection effect of a $ZrO_2$ coating on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film.

Lithium vanadium phosphate, $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ was prepared by a simple solid state route. It was found that making a fine powder of $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ by the mechanical milling is very effective for increasing the insertion/extraction of lithium from $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ structure. In charge/discharge test, the ball-milled $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ sample exhibited a higher initial discharge capacity of 174 mAh/g in the voltage range of 3.0-4.8 V, compared with pure $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ sample (152 mAh/g). Furthermore, the ball-milled $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ presented not only higher cycle retention rate after 50 cycles, but also better rate capability compared with pure sample in the whole region (0.1-7 C).

A solution processable polymer was synthesized, by incorporating pyrene groups into the backbone of the polyaniline chain, and used as an emissive layer in an organic light emitting diode. The polyaniline base was reacted with acid chloride of pyrene butyric acid to form pyrene-functionalized polyaniline chains. The source of pyrene moiety was acid chloride of pyrene butyric acid. The formation of polymer from acid chloride of pyrene butyric acid and polyaniline was confirmed by the FTIR and $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed high glass transition temperature of 210 $^{\circ}C$. Due to the presence of pyrene moieties in the backbone, the polyaniline synthesized in the present study is solution processable with light emitting property. The photoluminescence spectrum of the polymer revealed that emission lies in the blue region, with a peak at 475 nm. The light emitting device of this polymer exhibits the turn-on voltage of 15 V.

Tyrosinase is a widespread enzyme with great promising capabilities. The Lineweaver-Burk plots of the catecholase reactions showed that the kinetics of mushroom tyrosinase (MT), activated by $Co^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ at different pHs (6, 7, 8 and 9) obeyed the non-essential activation mode. The binding of metal ions to the enzyme increases the maximum velocity of the enzyme due to an increase in the enzyme catalytic constant ($k_{cat}$). From the kinetic analysis, dissociation constants of the activator from the enzyme-metal ion complex ($K_a$) were obtained as $5{\times}10^4M^{-1}$ and $8.33{\times}10^3M^{-1}$ for $Co^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ at pH 9 and 6 respectively. The structural analysis of MT through circular dichroism (CD) and intensive fluorescence spectra revealed that the conformational stability of the enzyme in these pHs reaches its maximum value in the presence of each of the two metal ions.

In this study, mercury vapor adsorption behaviors for some kinds of porous materials having various pore structures were investigated. The specific surface area and pore structures were studied by BET and D-R plot methods from $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms. It was found that the micropore materials (activated carbons, ACs) showed the highest mercury adsorption capacity. In a comparative study of mesoporous materials (SBA-15 and MCM-41), the adsorption capacity of the SBA-15 was higher than that of MCM-41. From the pore structure analysis, it was found that SBA-15 has a higher micropore fraction compared to MCM-41. This result indicates that the mercury vapor adsorptions can be determined by two factors. The first factor is the specific surface area of the adsorbent, and the second is the micropore fraction when the specific surface areas of the adsorbent are similar.

A series of 1,4-disubstituted octahydroquinoxaline-2,3-dione derivatives was prepared through two steps reaction. The latter involves the formation of N,N-disubstituted cyclohexane-1,2-diamine derivatives (la-j) through reductive alkylation of 1,2-cyclohexanediamine with different aldehydes in presence of sodium cyanoborohydride. Fusion of compounds (1a-j) with diethyl oxalate affording the target compounds (2a-j). Elucidation of structures of compounds (2a-j) was based upon different spectral data as well as the elemental methods of analyses. In addition, mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analyses were carried out. Moreover, the lipophilicity of the target compounds as expressed from the Clog P. Most of the test compounds (2a-j) showed weak to moderate antibacterial and antifungal activities against most of the used bacterial and fungal strains in comparison to chloramphenicol and clotrimazole as reference drugs respectively.

A previous study (Lee, C. W. J. Phys. B 2010, 43, 175002) that isolated the overlapping resonances in the photoionization spectra using multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) in systems involving a single open channel was extended to manage many open channels when the closed channels are degenerate. The theory was applied to the dipole allowed J = 1$^{\circ}$ spectra from the ground state with excitation energies lying between the lowest ionization thresholds for rare gas atoms, Ar, Kr, and Xe, and also for group IV elements, Ge, Sn and Pb.

The reaction of gas-phase atomic hydrogen with oxygen atoms chemisorbed on a silicon surface is studied by use of the classical trajectory approach. We have calculated the probability of the OH formation and energy deposit of the reaction exothermicity in the newly formed OH in the gas-surface reaction H(g) + O(ad)/Si${\rightarrow}$ OH(g) + Si. All reactive events occur in a single impact collision on a subpicosecond scale, following the Eley-Rideal mechanism. These events occur in a localized region around the adatom site on the surface. The reaction probability is dependent upon the gas temperature and shows the maximum near 1000 K, but it is essentially independent of the surface temperature. The reaction probability is also independent upon the initial excitation of the O-Si vibration. The reaction energy available for the product state is carried away by the desorbing OH in its translational and vibrational motions. When the initial excitation of the O-Si vibration increases, translational and vibrational energies of OH rise accordingly, while the energy shared by rotational motion varies only slightly. Flow of energy between the reaction zone and the solid has been incorporated in trajectory calculations, but the amount of energy propagated into the solid is only a few percent of the available energy released in the OH formation.

Uniform, hollow nanosilica spheres were prepared by the chemical coating of cationic polystyrene (cPS) with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), followed by calcination at 600 $^{\circ}C$ under air. cPS was synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization using 2,2'-azobis (2-methyl propionamidine) dihydrochloride as the cationic initiator, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) as a stabilizer. The resulting cPS spheres were 280 nm in diameter, and showed monodispersion. After coating, the hollow silica product was spherically shaped, and 330 nm in diameter, with a narrow distribution of sizes. Dispersion was uniform. Wall thickness was 25 nm, and surface area was 96.4 $m^2/g$, as determined by BET. The uniformity of the wall thickness was strongly dependent upon the cPS surface charge. The effects of TEOS and ammonia concentrations on shape, size, wall thickness, and surface roughness of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres were investigated. We observed that the wall thicknesses of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres increased and that silica size was simultaneously enhanced with increases in TEOS concentrations. When ammonia concentrations were increased, the irregularity of rough surfaces and aggregation of spherical particles were more severe because higher concentrations of ammonia result in faster hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS. These changes caused the silica to grow faster, resulting in hollow $SiO_2$ spheres with irregular, rough surfaces.

The aminolysis of O-methyl S-aryl thiocarbonates with benzylamines are studied in acetonitrile at -45.0$^{\circ}C$. The ${\beta}_X$(${\beta}_{nuc}$) values are in the range 0.62-0.80 with a negative cross-interaction constant, ${\rho}_{XZ}$ = -0.42, which are interpreted to indicate a concerted mechanism. The kinetic isotope effects involving deuterated benzylamine nucleophiles ($XC_6H_4CH_2ND_2$) are large, $k_H/k_D$ = 1.29-1.75, suggesting that the N-H(D) bond is partially broken in the transition state by forming a hydrogen-bonded four-center cyclic structure. The concerted mechanism is enforced by the strong push provided by the MeO group which enhances the nucleofugalities of both benzylamine and arenethiolate from the putative zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate.

N-Bromosaccharin/$Mg(ClO_4)_2$ is an effective and regioselective system for ${\alpha}$-monobromination of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. A wide variety of ${\beta}$-keto esters and 1,3-diketones in reaction with this system afforded a regioselectively ${\alpha}$-monobrominated products. The bromination reaction can be conducted at 0-5 $^{\circ}C$ either in solution or under solvent-free conditions.

An effective analytical method of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed for the rapid determination of essential oils in the crude extract of Acorus species (Acorus gramineus, Acorus tatarinowii, and Acorus calamus). Major phenypropanoids (${\beta}$,${\alpha}$-asarone isomers, euasarone, and methyleugenol) and ${\beta}$-caryophyllene in Acorus species were used as marker compounds and determined for the quality control of herbal medicines. To extract marker compounds, various extraction techniques such as solvent immersion, mechanical shaking, and sonication were compared, and the greatest efficiency was observed with sonication extraction using petroleum ether. The dynamic range of the GC/MS method depended on the specific analyte; acceptable quantification was obtained between 10 and 2000 ${\mu}g/mL$ for ${\beta}$-asarone, 10 and 500 ${\mu}g/mL$ for ${\alpha}$-asarone, 10 and 200 ${\mu}g/mL$ for methyleugenol, and between 5 and 100 ${\mu}g/mL$ for ${\beta}$-caryophyllene. The method was deemed satisfactory by inter- and intra-day validation and exhibited both high accuracy and precision, with a relative standard deviation < 10%. Overall limits of detection were approximately 0.34-0.83 ${\mu}g/mL$, with a standard deviation (${\sigma}$)-to-calibration slope (s) ratio (${\sigma}$/s) of 3. The limit of quantitation in our experiments was approximately 1.13-3.20 ${\mu}g/mL$ at a ${\sigma}$/s of 10. On the basement of method validation, 20 samples of Acorus species collected from markets in Korea were monitored for the quality control. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were performed on the analytical data of 20 different Acorus species samples in order to classify samples that were collected from different regions.

A novel and efficient method for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydrofurans bearing a variety of substituents on the dihydrofuran ring was achieved by the reaction of cyclic diazodicarbonyl compounds with styrene and vinyl acetate. The key strategy was AgBF$_4$/[Bmim]BF$_4$-catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition. The synthesized dihydrofurans with an acetate group were further converted to the corresponding 3-acylfurans.

Thermal hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PA, $C_8H_6$) to styrene ($C_8H_8$) on pre-$C_xH_y$- and C-covered Cu(111) single crystal substrates has been studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) mass spectrometry. Chemisorbed PA with an acetylene group has been proved to be associated with hydrogen of pre-adsorbed $C_xH_y$ to form styrene (104 amu) on Cu surface. For the parent (PA) mass (102 amu) TPD profile, the TPD peaks at 360 K and 410 K are assigned to chemisorbed vertically aligned PA and flat-lying cross-bridged PA, respectively (J. Phys. Chem. C 2007, 111, 5101). The relative $I_{360K}/I_{410K}$ TPD ratio dramatically increases with increasing pre-adsorbed $C_xH_y$ before dosing PA, while the ratio does not increase for pre-C-covered surface. For PA on pre-$C_xH_y$-covered Cu(111) surface, styrene desorption is enhanced relative to the parent PA desorption, while styrene formation is dramatically quenched on pre-C-covered (lack of adsorbed hydrogen nearby) surface. It appears that only cross-bridged PA associates with adsorbed hydrogen to form styrene that promptly desorbs at 410 K, while vertically aligned PA is less likely to participate in forming styrene.

A solvent extraction separation, preconcentration and determination of thorium with a new crown, 2-ethyl-N-benzyl-4,7,10,13,16-pentaoxa-1-azacyclooctadecane (MACE), is described in the study. The amount of thorium in the aqueous phase and organic phase was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy and Ultraviolet-Visible, respectively. Thorium loaded organic phase was quantitatively stripped in a stage by using 1.0 M $HNO_3$. Thorium was effectively extracted with MACE in the pH range of 6-7 to produce a 3:2 complex ratio in the chloroform. A highly sensitive and rapid spectrophotometric method was described for determination of trace amounts of thorium with MACE. The effective molar absorption coefficient at 281 nm is $1.98{\times}10^3\;mol^{-1}cm^{-1}$, and the system complies with Beer's law in the range from 0.464 to 2.32 ${\mu}gm\;L^{-1}$ of thorium. Thorium was also determined in standard and environmental samples.

The presence of replication-competent adenovirus (RCA) subpopulations in adenoviral vector products raises a variety of safety issues for development of therapies based on gene therapy. To analyze the differing effects of adenoviral vector and RCA in vivo, we examined alterations in amino acids (AAs) using rat plasma following injection of ${\beta}$-galactosidase expressing recombinant adenovirus (designated rAdLacZ) or RCA. Plasma AAs were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 16 AAs were positively measured. In the rAdLacZ group compared to the control group, the level of aspartic acid was significantly increased (Student's t-test), while the level of glutamic acid was significantly reduced. Additionally, in the RCA group compared to the control group, the level of four AAs, valine, leucine, and isoleucine as branched-chain amino acids, and proline were significantly increased, whereas the levels of three AAs, glycine, threonine, and glutamic acid were significantly reduced. Altered plasma free AA metabolic patterns in rAdLacZ and RCA groups, compared with the control group, may explain the disturbance of AA metabolism related to viral infection.

Antimony trichloride (SbCl3) was demonstrated to be an effective catalyst for the cyanosilylation of a wide variety of carbonyl compounds under solvent-free conditions. The reactions proceeded smoothly at room temperature to afford the corresponding cyanosilylethers in good to excellent yields.

Alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets were prepared by calcining aluminum nitride powders under a mixed gas flow of carbon monoxide and argon. The graphene sheets were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The few-layer graphene sheets, which wrapped around the alumina particles, did not exhibit any diffraction peaks in the XRD patterns but did show three characteristic bands (D, G, and 2D bands) in the Raman spectra. The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) with the alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets exhibited significantly improved overall energy-conversion efficiency, compared to conventional DSSC, due to longer electron lifetime.

Silver nanoparticles (<10 nm) were prepared in ultrasonic vibration-induced nanodroplets of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) in combination with hydrophobic room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The Ag-precursor used were silver (I) complex, Ag$_2$(ehac)$_2$(eha)$_2$ (ehac = 2-ethylhexylammonium carbamate; eha = 2-ethylhexylamine), in IPA, while 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids bearing $SbF_6^-$, $PF_6^-$ and $NTf_2^-$ as counter anions were used as RTILs. During sonication for 10-90 min at room temperature, uniform silver nanoparticles with mean sizes of 2 to 8 nm were rapidly synthesized. Transmission electron micrographs also confirmed that silver nanoparticles have a spherical shape and diverse sizes depending on the reaction time (10-90 min).

The aim of the present study was to improve the solubility and bioavailability of a poorly water-soluble drug in human body, using a solid dispersion technique (hot melt extrusion). The solid dispersion was prepared by cooling the hot melt of the drug in the carrier (Vitamin E TPGS and PVP). The dissolution rate of formulation 1 from a novel formulation prepared by solid dispersion technique was equal to release of formulation 6 (40% of eprosartan mesylate is in contrast to teveten$^{(R)}$) within 60 min (Table 1). The oral bioavailability of new eprosartan mesylate tablet having vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29 was tested on rats and dogs. Of the absorption enhancer and polymer tested, vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29, resulted in the greatest increases of AUC in animals (about 2.5-fold increase in rat and dog). When eprosartan mesylate was mixed with the absorption enhancer and polymer in a ratio of 2.94:2:1, vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29 improved eprosartan mesylate bioavailability significantly compared with the conventional immediate release (IR) tablet Teveten$^{(R)}$ (formulation 7). These results show that solid dispersion using vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29 is a promising approach for developing eprosartan mesylate drug products.

Blue fluorescent materials based on 9,9'-diethyl-2-diphenylaminofluorene derivatives were synthesized and characterized. These materials were used as the blue dopant materials for the emitting layer of organic light-emitting diode devices with the following device structure: ITO/DNTPD (40 nm)/NPB (20 nm)/MADN: dopants (2%, 20 nm)/$Alq_3$ (40 nm)/Liq (1.0 nm)/Al. All devices exhibited highly efficient blue emission. One of these devices exhibited a maximum luminance, luminous efficiency, power efficiency and CIE x, y coordinates of 8400 $cd/m^2$, 8.10 cd/A at 20 $mA/cm^2$, 3.36 lm/W at 20 $mA/cm^2$ and (0.151, 0.159), respectively. A deep blue device with CIE coordinates of (0.152, 0.139) showed the maximum luminance, luminous efficiency and power efficiency of 8630 $cd/m^2$, 6.31 cd/A at 20$mA/cm^2$ and 2.62 lm/W at 20 $mA/cm^2$, respectively.

Novel chemosensors based on 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)quinoline were prepared and evaluated for sensing metal cations. The photophysical properties of chemosensors 1-3 were examined and their ion-selectivity was evaluated by measuring their fluorescent emission responses to alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metal ions. Chemosensors 1, 2 and 3 show ratiometric and enhanced fluorescence changes with transitional metals that are efficient fluorescence quenchers, especially 3 has a high binding constant with $Hg^{+2}$ in $CH_3CN$.

We developed three-dimensional quantitative structure activity relationship (3D-QASR) models for 17 adamantyl derivatives as P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibitors. Eighteen different partial charge calculation methods were tested to check the feasibility of the 3D-QSAR models. Best predictive comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) model was obtained with the Austin Model 1-Bond Charge Correction (AM1-BCC) atomic charge. The 3D-QSAR models were derived with CoMFA and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA). The final CoMFA model ($q^2$ = 0.764, $r^2$ = 0.988) was calculated with an AM1-BCC charge and electrostatic parameter, whereas the CoMSIA model ($q^2$ = 0.655, $r^2$ = 0.964) was derived with an AM1-BCC charge and combined steric, electrostatic, hydrophobic and HB-acceptor parameters. Leave-five-out (LFO) cross-validation was also performed, which yielded good correlation coefficient for both CoMFA (0.801) and CoMSIA (0.656) models. Robustness of the developed models was checked further with 1000 run bootstrapping analyses, which gave an acceptable correlation coefficient for CoMFA (BS-$r^2$ = 0.997, BS-SD = 0.003) and CoMSIA (BS-$r^2$ = 0.996, BS-SD = 0.018).

A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-[(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

Homologated analogues 3a and 3b of potent and selective A3 adenosine receptor ligands, IB-MECA and dimethyl-IB-MECA were synthesized from commercially available 1-O-acetyl-2,3,5-tri-O-benzoyl-${\beta}$-D-ribofuranose (4) via $Co_2(CO)_8$-catalyzed siloxymethylation as a key step. Unfortunately, homologated analogues 3a and 3b did not show significant binding affinities at three subtypes of adenosine receptors, indicating that free rotation, resulting from homologation, induced unfavorable interactions in the binding site of the receptor maybe due to the presence of many conformations.

Kinetic studies of the reactions of O,O-diphenyl Z-S-aryl phosphorothioates with X-benzylamines have been carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide at 55.0 $^{\circ}C$. The Hammett (log $k_2$ vs ${\sigma}_X$) and Bronsted [log $k_2$ vs $pK_a(X)$] plots for substituent X variations in the nucleophiles are biphasic concave downwards with a maximum point at X = H, and the unusual positive ${\rho}_X$ and negative ${\beta}_X$ values are obtained for the strongly basic benzylamines. The sign of the cross-interaction constant (${\rho}_{XZ}$) is negative for both the strongly and weakly basic nucleophiles. Greater magnitude of ${\rho}_{XZ}$ value is observed with the weakly basic nucleophiles (${\rho}_{XZ}$ = -2.35) compared to with the strongly basic nucleophiles (${\rho}_{XZ}$ = -0.03). The deuterium kinetic isotope effects ($k_H/k_D$) involving deuterated benzylamines [$XC_6H_4CH_2ND_2$] are primary normal ($k_H/k_D$ > 1). The proposed mechanism is a concerted $S_N2$ involving a frontside nucleophilic attack with a hydrogen bonded, four-center-type transition state for both the strongly and weakly basic nucleophiles. The unusual positive ${\rho}_X$ and negative ${\beta}_X$ values with the strongly basic benzylamines are rationalized by through-space interaction between the ${\pi}$-clouds of the electron-rich phenyl ring of benzylamine and the phenyl ring of the leaving group thiophenoxide.

Electroless plating of metallic nickel on carbon fiber surfaces was carried out to control specific electric resistivity of the fibers, and the effects of the nickel content and coating thickness on the electric properties were studied. The structural and surface properties of the carbon fibers were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The specific resistivity of the fibers was measured using a four-point probe testing method. From the XPS results, the oxygen and Ni atomic ratio of the fibers was greatly enhanced as the plating time increased. Additionally, it was observed that the specific electric resistivity decreased considerably in the presence of metallic nickel particles and with the formation of nickel layers on carbon fibers.

An efficient and novel positive charge-doping on the sidewalls of multi-walled carbon nanotubes has been achieved in the presence of tetrahydrofuran as a dopant and Lewis acidic ionic liquids, [bmim]$Sb_nF_{5n+1}$ (n ${\geq}$ 2; bmim = 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium), as an activator, leaving air-stable derivatives having positively charged sidewalls and the counter anions, [MWCNT$^{y+}$][SbF$_6^-$]$_y$ (MWCNT = multi-walled carbon nanotube). The derivatization took place very fast in one-pot and under mild reaction conditions. The ionic structure enabled a tunable dissolution of the derivatives in various solvents through anion exchange.

Water-soluble mutant of intrinsically insoluble protein, crambin, was produced by mutagenesis based on the sequence analysis with homologous proteins. Thr1, Phe13, and Lys33 of crambin were substituted for Lys, Tyr, and Lys, respectively. The resultant mutant was soluble in aqueous buffer as well as in dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelle solution. The $^1H-^{15}N$ spectrum of the mutant crambin showed spectral similarity to that of the wild-type protein except for local regions proximal to the sites of mutation. Solution structure of water-soluble mutant crambin was determined in aqueous buffer by NMR spectroscopy. The structure was almost identical to the wild-type structure determined in non-aqueous solvent. Subtle difference in structure was very local and related to the change of the intra- and inter-protein hydrophobic interaction of crambin. The structural details for the enhanced solubility of crambin in aqueous solvent by the mutation were provided and discussed.

[ ${\beta}$ ]Ketoacyl acyl carrier protein synthase I (KAS I) is involved in the elongation of unsaturated fatty acids in bacterial fatty acid synthesis and a therapeutic target of designing novel antibiotics. In this study, we performed receptor-oriented pharmacophore-based in silico screening of E. coli KAS I (ecKAS I) with the aim of identifying novel inhibitors. We determined one pharmacophore map and selected 8 compounds as candidates ecKAS I inhibitors. We discovered one antimicrobial compound, YKAe1008, N-(3-pyridinyl) hexanamide, displaying minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 128-256 ${\mu}g/mL$ against MRSA and VREF. YKAe1008 was subsequently assessed for binding to ecKAS I using saturation-transfer difference NMR spectroscopy. Further optimization of this compound will be carried out to improve its antimicrobial activity and membrane permeability against bacterial cell membrane.

A series of potent tricyclic derivatives with a non-aromatic amide as potent PARP-1 inhibitors were successfully synthesized and their PARP-1 inhibitory activity was evaluated. Among the derivatives, 2-(1-propylpiperidin-4-yloxy)-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrophenanthridin-6(5H)-one 23c displayed potent activity in a PARP-1 enzymatic assay and cell-based assay ($IC_{50}$ = 0.142 ${\mu}M$, $ED_{50}$ = 0.90 ${\mu}M$) with good water solubility. Further, molecular modeling studies confirmed the obtained biological results.

In this study, CdSe-$TiO_2$ photocatalyst were synthesized by a facile solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by degrading methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution under irradiation of UV light as well as visible light. The absorbance of degraded MB solution was determined by UV-vis spectrophotometer. The results revealed that the CdSe-$TiO_2$ photocatalyst exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than $TiO_2$ both under irradiation of UV light as well as visible light.

Steric and electronic parameters of 4'-substituents play significant roles in steering the conformation of nucleoside analogues. In order to investigate the relationship of 4'-substituent with antiviral enhancement, novel 4'-phenyl-5'-norcarbocyclic adenosine phosphonic acid analogues were racemically synthesized via de novo acyclic stereoselective route from propionaldehyde 5. The phenyl substituted cyclopentenols 15a and 15b as key intermediates were successfully constructed via reiterative carbonyl addition of Grignard reagents and ring-closing metathesis of corresponding divinyl 14. The synthesized nucleoside phosphonic acids analogues 19, 20, 21, and 23 were subjected to antiviral screening against HIV-1.

Six new binuclear copper(II) complexes have been prepared by template condensation of the dialdehydes 1,8-[bis(3-formyl-2-hydroxy-5-methyl)benzyl]-l,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (PC-a) and 1,8-[bis(3-formyl-2-hydroxy-5-bromo)benzyl]-l,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (PC-b) with appropriate aliphatic diamines, and copper(II) perchlorate. The structural features of the complexes have been confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis and mass spectra etc. The electrochemical behavior of all the copper(II) complexes show two irreversible one electron reduction process. The room temperature magnetic moment studies depict the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction in the binuclear complexes. The catechol oxidation and hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenylphosphate were carried out by using the complexes as catalyst. The antimicrobial screening data show good results. The binding of the complexes to calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) has been investigated with absorption and emission spectroscopy. The complex [$Cu_2L^{1a}$] displays significant cleavage property of circular plasmid pBR322 DNA in to linear form. Spectral, electrochemical, magnetic and catalytic studies support the distortion of the copper ion geometry that arises as the macrocyclic ring size increases.

Interfacial reactions kinetics often differ from kinetics of bulk reactions. Here, we describe how the density change of an immobilized reactant influences the kinetics of interfacial reactions. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates on gold were used as a model interface and the Diels-Alder reaction between immobilized quinones and soluble cyclopentadiene was used as a model reaction. The kinetic behavior was studied using varying concentrations of quinones. An unusual threshold density of quinones (${\Gamma}_c$ = 5.2-7.2%), at which the pseudo-first order rate constant started to vary as the reaction progressed, was observed. This unexpected kinetic behavior was attributed to the phase-separation phenomena of multi-component SAMs. Additional experiments using more phase-separated two-component SAMs supported this explanation by revealing a significant decrease in ${\Gamma}_c$ values. When the background hydroxyl group was replaced with carboxylic or phosphoric acid groups, ${\Gamma}_c$ was observed at below 1%. Also, more phase-separated thermodynamically controlled SAMs produced a lower critical density (3% < ${\Gamma}_c$ < 4.9%) than that of the less phaseseparated kinetically controlled SAMs (6.5% < ${\Gamma}_c$ < 8.9%).

The molecular structures of thiacalix[4]biscrown-5 (1) and p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]biscrown-5 (2) and their alkali-metal-ion complexes were optimized using the DFT BLYP/6-31G(d) and mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) (hybrid HF-DF) calculations. The total electronic energies, the normal vibrational modes, and the Gibbs free energies of the mono- and di-topic complexes of each host with the sodium and potassium ions were analyzed. The $K^+$-complexes exhibited relatively stronger binding efficiencies than $Na^+$-complexes for both the monoand di-topic complexes of 1 and 2 comparing the efficiencies of the sodium and potassium complexes with an anisole and phenol. The mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) calculated distances between the oxygen atoms and the alkali metal ions were reported in the alkali-metal-ion complexes ($1{\cdot}Na^+$, $1{\cdot}2Na^+$, $1{\cdot}K^+$, $1{\cdot}2K^+$, $2{\cdot}Na^+$, $2{\cdot}Na^+$, $2{\cdot}K^+$, $2{\cdot}2K^+$). The BLYP/6-31G(d) calculated IR spectra of the host 1 and its mono-topic alkali-metal-ion complexes are compared.

The reactions of 1H-1,2,4-triazole (Htr) with $MX_2$ ($ZnCl_2$ for 1; $CdBr_2$ for 2) resulted in two coordination polymers, [Zn(tr)Cl]$_n$ (1) and $[Cd(Htr)_2Br_2]_n$ (2). The structural analyses indicate that 1 and 2 feature a 2D layer and 1D triple chain, respectively. In 1, neighouring Zn atoms are connected by ${\mu}_3-1$ ${\kappa}N$: 2 ${\kappa}N$: $4{\kappa}N-tr^-$ anionic ligand into 6- and 16-membered rings, further grow into a 2D sheet. Cd atoms in 2 are bonded by two ${\mu}_2-Br^-$ bridges and neutral ${\mu}_2$-1 ${\kappa}N$: 2 ${\kappa}N$-Htr to form a 1D triple chain. The fluorescent characterizations of 1, 2 and the free Htr ligand feature simlilar emission peakes at 444, 446 and 423 nm respectively, which can be assigned to intra-ligand ${\pi}-{\pi}^*$ transition of (H)tr. The energy gaps of 5.90 eV for 1, 5.16 eV for 2, and 5.93 eV for Htr suggest that the compounds behave as insulators.

A facile, green, efficient and environment-friendly protocol for the synthesis of 14-aryl- or alkyl-14Hdibenzo[a,j]xanthene, 1,8-dioxooctahydroxanthene and 12-aryl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthene-11-one have been developed by one-pot condensation of various aldehydes with (i) ${\beta}$-naphthol (ii) cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and (iii) ${\beta}$-naphthol and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, in the presence of 1,3,5-trichloro-2,4,6-triazinetrion (trichloroisocyanuric acid, TCCA) as catalyst under solvent-free conditions. The present approach offers the advantages of clean reaction, simple methodology, short reaction time, easy purification, and economic availability of the catalyst.

ZSM-5-$SO_3H$ efficiently catalyzed the one-pot three-component Mannich reaction of aldehydes, anilines, and ketones. ${\beta}$-Aminocarbonyl compounds were obtained in reasonable yields and excellent stereoselectivities when the reaction was carried out at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. Simple experimental conditions and product isolation procedure makes this protocol potential for the development of clean and environment-friendly strategy for the synthesis of ${\beta}$-amino-ketones. The catalyst was recovered and reused for subsequent runs.

KIST301135 was semi-synthetically prepared by the reaction of Staurosporine with triphosgene in anhydrous dichloromethane. The structure of KIST301135 was confirmed by $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, and high resolution mass spectrum. KIST301135 was initially tested in a single dose duplicate mode at a concentration of 20 nM over a panel of 53 kinases against Staurosporine as a positive control. KIST301135 has showed inhibitions above 75% in only 2 kinases (FLT3 and JAK3 kinases) of the 53 tested kinases, while Staurosporine has showed inhibitions above 80% in about 62% of the tested kinases. KIST301135 was retested at a 5-dose testing mode over the 9 kinases inhibited by percentages over 20 at the single dose testing in order to determine its $IC_{50}$ values. KIST301135 has shown much improved kinase inhibitory selectivity relative to Staurosporine in its potency at JAK3 kinase and CAMK2b kinase.

Nanoporous structured tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) is characterized and its application in the photocatalytic destruction of endocrine, Bisphenol A, is examined. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals irregularly shaped nanopores of size 2.0-4.5 nm. This corresponds to the result of an average nanopore distribution of 4.5 nm, as determined by Barret-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) plot from the isotherm curve. The photoluminescence (PL) curve, corresponding to the recombination between electron and hole, largely decreases in the $TiO_2$/nanoporous $SnO_2$ composite. Finally, a synergy effect between $TiO_2$ and porous $SnO_2$ is exhibited in photocatalysis: the photocatalytic destruction of Bisphenol A is improved by combining the nanoporous structured $SnO_2$ with $TiO_2$, and 75% decomposition of 10.0 ppm of Bisphenol A is achieved after 24 h.
