Spinel $CoFe_2O_4$ solid solutions containing up to 50 mol% CoO were synthesized with spectroscopically pure CoO and ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ polycrystalline powders. The spinel structures of the $CoFe_2O_4$ solid solutions were analyzed from XRD patterns and the Mossbauer spectra showed that the quenched $CoFe_2O_4$ had a partially inversed spinel structure ($Co_{0.23}Fe_{0.77}$) < $Co_{0.77}Fe_{1.23}$ > $O_4$, while the slowly cooled $CoFe_2O_4$ was completely inversed spinel ($Co_{0.04}Fe_{0.96}$) <$Co_{0.96}Fe_{1.04}$ > $O_4$. The $CoFe_2O_4$ specimens containing 10, 20, 30 and 40 mol% CoO turned to be a mixture of corundum and spinel structures. Electrical conductivities were measured as a function of temperature from 300 to $900^{\circ}C$ under oxygen partial pressures from $10^{-3}$ to 1 atm. The temperature dependencies of the electrical conductivity show different behaviors in the low- and high-temperature regions. The average activation energies are 0.23 eV and 0.80 eV in the low- and high-temperature regions, respectively. It is suggested that $Co^{2+} {\to} CO^{3+} + e^-$ and $Fe^{2+} {\rightleftharpoons} Fe^{3+} + e^-$ are the main conduction mechanisms responsible for the electronic conduction in the low- and high-temperature regions, respectively.

Two crystal structures of fully dehydrated silver and potassium exchanged zeolite A, stoichiometries of $Ag_{9.3}K_{{2.7}^-}A$ (${\alpha}$ = 12.282(2) ${\AA}$) and $Ag_{10.7}K_{{1.3}^-}{\AA}$ (${\alpha}$ = 12.287(2) A) per unit cell, have been determined from 3-dimensional x-ray diffraction data gathered by counter methods. All structures were solved and refined in the cubic space group Pm3m at 21(1)$^{\circ}C$ . The crystals of $Ag_{9.3}K_{{2.7}^-}A$ and $Ag_{10.7}K_{{1.3}^-}A$ were prepared by flow method using exchange solutions in which mole ratios of $AgNO_3$ and $KNO_3$ were 1:10 and 1:5, respectively, with total concentration of 0.05M. The structures of the dehydrated $Ag_{9.3}K_{{2.7}^-}A$ and $Ag_{10.7}K_{{1.3}^-}A$ were refined to yield the final error indices $R_1$ = 0.037 and $R_2$ = 0.040 with 321 reflections, and $R_1$ = 0.042 and $R_2$ = 0.043 with 371 reflections, repectively, for which I > 3${\sigma}$(I). In both structures, eight $Ag^+$ ions are found nearly at 6-ring centers and each $Ag^+$ ion is nearly in the (1 1 1) plane at its O(3) ligands. The 8-ring sites are preferentially occupied by $K^+$ ions in both structures. 1.3 and 1.7 reduced silver atoms per unit cell were found inside of sodalite units of $Ag_{9.3}K_{{2.7}^-}A$ and that of $Ag_{10.7}K_{{1.3}^-}A$, respectively. These reduced silver species were presumably formed from the reduction of $Ag^+$ ions by oxide ions of residual water molecule or of the zeolite framework. These two crystals may be presented as hexasilver cluster in 21.7% and 28.3% of sodalite unit cells for $Ag_{9.3}K_{{2.7}^-}A$ and $Ag_{10.7}K_{{1.3}^-}A$, repectively.

Separation of optical isomers of dansyl amino acids by a reversed phase liquid chromatography has been accomplished by adding a copper (II) chelate of N-benzyl-L-proline to the mobile phase. The pH, the eluent composition and the concentration of copper (II) chelate all affect the optical separations. The elution orders between D and L DNS-amino acids were consistant except dansyl phenylalanine showing that D forms of DNS-amino acids elute earlier than L forms. These behaviors are different from the results obtained by the use of copper (II) proline. The retention mechanism for the optical separation of the dansyl amino acids can be explained by the equilibrium of liqand exchange and by hydrophobic interaction.

The polycrystalline powder of (CaLa) (MgMo)$O_6$ has been prepared at $1350^{\circ}C$ in $H_2/H_2O$ and $N_2$ flowing atmosphere. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern indicates that (CaLa) (MgMo)$O_6$ has a monoclinic perovskite structure with the lattice constants $a_0=b_0=7.901(1){\AA}$, $c =7.875(1){\AA}\;and\;{\gamma}=89^{\circ}$16'(1'), which can be reduced to orthorhombic unit cell, a = 5.551(1) ${\AA}$, b = 5.622(1) ${\AA}$ and c = 7.875(1) ${\AA}$. The infrared spectrum shows two strong absorption bands with their maxima at 590($ν_3$) and 380($ν_4$) cm, which are attributed to $2T_{1u}$ modes indicating the existence of highly charged molybdenum octahedron $MoO_6$ in the crystal lattice. According to the magnetic susceptibility measurement, the compound follows the Curie-Weiss law below room temperature with the effective magnetic moment 1.83(1)$_{{\mu}B}$, which is well consistent with that of spin only value (1.73 $_{\mu}_B$) for $Mo^{5+}$ with $4d^1$-electronic configuration within the limit of experimental error. From the thermogravimetric analysis, it has been confirmed that (CaLa) (MgMo)$O_6$ decomposes gradually into $CaMoO_4,\;MoO_3,\;MgO,\;La_2O_3$ and unidentified phases due to the oxidation of $Mo^{5+}$ to $Mo^{6+}$.

[(Benzene)Mn$(CO)_3$]$^+$ reacts with NaP(O) (OR)$_2$ (R = Me, Et, Ph) to give the phosphonate compound 1. Compound 1 reacts with R'Li (R = Me, Ph, $^nBu, ^tBu$) to yield the isomerized compound 2 and the alkylated compound 3. [(Toluene)Mn$(CO)_3$]$^+$ reacts with NaP(O)$(OMe)_2$ to give the phosphonate complexes 1-A and 1-B. Treatment of 1-A with $^tBuLi$ in THF affords complexes 3-A and 3-B with the later major. With 1-B only the complex 3-C is formed. [(Anisole)Mn$(CO)_3$]$^+$ reacts with NaP(O)$(OMe)_2$ to give the phosphate complex 1-C, which on treatment with $^tBuLi$ and then $H_2O$ yields compound 3-D. After demetallation of compound 3-D, meta-tertbutyl-anisole is obtained in a reasonable yield.

${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives such as esters, amides, and nitriles are readily reduced to the corresponding saturated derivatives by potassium triphenylborohydride, $KPh_3BH$, in the presence of phenol, a quenching agent, in excellent yields.

The Pfeiffer effect was examined on the systems of racemic [$Co^{II}(acac)_2$(diamine)] with d-cinchonine and l-cinchonidine as chiral environment substances in methanol, ethanol, chloroform and methanol-chloroform mixture solvents. It was found that the ${\Delta}$-enantiomer is enriched for the [$Co^{II}(acac)_2$(diamine)]-d-cinchonine system, but the Λ -enantiomer is enriched for the [$Co^{II}(acac)_2$(diamine)]-l-cinchonidine system. The complexes having no N-H protons such as [$Co^{II}(acac)_2$(bpy)] and [$Co^{II}(acac)_2$(phen)] were Pfeiffer-inactive in alcoholic solvents, where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline. This was interpreted to mean that the hydrogen bonding between N-H proton of diamine ligand and C-9 hydroxyl group of alkalid plays an important role in the chiral discrimination. And the rate of antiracemization ($k_{anti}$) by the Pfeiffer effect was also measured for the [$Co^{II}(acac)_2$(diamine)]-d-cinchonine system in alcoholic solvents. It was found that the rate of appearance of the Pfeiffer effect was enhanced as the concentration of added chloroform is increased.

The condensation of 1-amino-1,2-dihydro-3,6-pyridazinedione (1) and 2-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione (2) with 1,3-diketones or 1,3-dialdehydes in polyphosphoric acid gave 6,9-dihydro-6,9-dioxopyridazino [1,2-a][1,2,3]triazines (3-6) and 6,11-dihydro-6,11-dioxo[1,2,3]triazino[1,2-b]phtha lazines (7-10), respectively. The condensation of 2 with 2,4-pentanedione in acetic acid gave N-alkylidene intermediate (11), which was cyclized to 9 by treatment with polyphosphoric acid.

Reaction of Keggin- or Dawson-type heteropolyanions containing two adjacent vanadium atoms with acetic anhydride in the presence of acid produced acylated anions. Heteropolyanions with one or no vanadium atom do not react under the same conditions, indicating that the acyl group is attached to the bridging oxygen atom between the two vanadium atoms. A characteristic infrared band at 1760 $cm^{-1}$ was observed for the acylated anions. The 8-line EPR spectrum shows that one of the vanadium atoms is reduced to V(IV ). The acylated heteropolyanions are easily hydrolyzed, and its acyl group can also be transferred to aniline.

Coordination chemistry of organotin(IV) dithiocarbamate complexes has been examined in terms of far infrared and $^{119}Sn$-NMR spectroscopies. Although the Sn-S stretching vibrational bands of the complex could not be correlated with the bonding nature of the dithiocarbamate ligand, $^{119}Sn$ chemical shifts were sensitive enough to distinguish clearly the coordination number of tin, and as such the bonding mode of the dithiocarbamate ligand could be indentified to be monodentate or bidentate. Thus the $^{119}Sn$-NMR study on new cyclohexyltin(IV) dithiocarbamate complexes along with the known complexes suggests that the bonding mode of the dithiocarbamate ligands and the consequent coordination number of tin are determined mainly by the inductive effects of the organic groups attached to the tin atom.

Transition metal PSSA ionomers containing Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III), Ru(III), and Rh(III) are investigated by IR, Far-IR, UV-Vis and DSC. Reliable IR Spectroscopic criteria are established for assessing the degree of ion-exchange of PSSA ionomers and the local structures around metal cations in them. In the hydrated transition metal PSSA ionomers, the ionic groups are solvated by water molecules and there is no significant interactions between sulfonate group and metal cations. The visible spectra indicated that metal cations are present as [M$(H_2O)_6$]$^{n+}$ with Oh symmetry. Their $T_g$ values increase as the extent of ionic site concentration increases, but there is no direct dependence of $T_g$ on the nature of metal cations or their oxidation states. Thus, the water content in PSSA ionomer is found to have dominant influence on $T_g$ of hydrated transition metal PSSA ionomers. Dehydration of the hydrated transition metal PSSA ionomers results in direct interaction between ionic groups and significant color changes of the ionomers due to the changes of the local structures around metal cations. On the base of spectral data, their local structures are discussed. In case of dehydrated 12.8 and 15.8 mol % transition metal PSSA ionomers, no glass transition is observed in 25-$250^{\circ}C$ region and this is believed to arise from the formation of highly crosslinked structures caused by direct coordination of sulfonate groups of metal cations. In the 6.9 mol % transition metal PSSA ionomers, the glass transition is always observed whether they are hydrated or dehydrated and this is though to be caused by the sufficient segmental mobility of the polymer backbone.

Results of kinetic studies on the reactions of benzyl chlorides with anilines and benzylamines are reported. Analyses of the cross interaction constants relevant to the degree of bond formation, ${\rho}_{XY}$ and ${\lambda}_{XY}$, are carried out. The magnitudes of the two parameters indicated that the degree of bond formation in the transition state is the typical of that expected for an $S_N2$ reaction, but the reactions with benzylamines appear to have a slightly less degree of bond formation compared with the reactions with anilines.

Racemic nuciferal(1) and nuciferol(2), the terpenic natural perfumeries, have been synthesized by a simple procedure. The benzylic halide 6; 1-(1-chloroethyl)-4-methylbenzene, was prepared by converting p-tolualdehyde(4) into 1-(p-tolyl)-1-ethanol(5), followed by convertion of 5 into corresponding chloride. The Grignard reagent of 6 was reacted with the bromoacetal 7, 2-(2-bromoethyl)-1,3-dioxolane, to give a crosscoupling product 8, which was hydrolysed to 4-(p-tolyl)-pentanal (9). The Wittig reaction of isopropylide 10 with 9 yielded arcurcumen(11). The stereospecific allylic oxidation of the gem-dimethyl olefin 11 with selenium dioxide afforded a trans-aldehyde, (${\pm}$)-1, which was reduced to corresponding alcohol, (${\pm}$)-2.

The explicit form of time correlation function between fluctuating concentrations is obtained for the model of metabolic system with negative feedback near a stable(or marginally stable) steady state.

New methods of the reduction of carboxylic acid salts to aldehydes with 2 equiv of thexylbromoborane-dimethyl sulfide (ThxBHBr${\cdot}SMe_2$) or 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) are described. Both these reagents provide the corresponding aldehydes from various as sodium and lithium salts of carboxylic acids in high yields both at room temperature. Such facile reductions are explained as the simple substitution for the bromo group of ThxBHBr by a carboxylate to form thexyl(acyloxty)borane followed by reduction with excess reagent and the formation of an ate complex followed by reduction with excess 9-BBN.

The chemisorption of CO molecules on polycrystalline nickel surface has been studied by investigating the resulting chemisorbed species with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at temperatures between 300K through 433K. It is found that the adsorbed CO molecules are dissociated by the simple C-O bond cleavage as well as by the disproportionation reaction at temperatures above 373K. The former type dissociation is more favored at low coverages and at elevated temperatures. The isotherms of CO chemisorption are obtained from the xps intensities of C 1s peaks, and then the activation energy of the dissociative adsorption is estimated as a function of the CO exposure. These activation energies are extrapolated to zero coverage to obtain the activation energy of chemisorption in which thermal C-O bond cleavage takes place. The value obtained is 38.1 kJ/mol.

Unusually high reactivity was found in peptide bond formation between p-nitrobenzophenone oxime resin (I) ester and amino acid 4-(methylthio)phentyl (MTP) esters. A charge-transfer complex between the two phenyl rings of the oxime resin (I) and the incoming amino acid MTP esters was considered to be responsible to accelerate the aminolysis reaction of the peptide oxime resin ester. Several di-, tri-, and pentapeptide fragments for preparing enkephalin and glutathione oligomers were successfully prepared in short times.
