Kinetic studies on the water-gas shift reaction catalyzed by magnetite/chromium oxide and copper/zinc oxide were carried out by using an in situ photoacoustic spectroscopic technique. The reactions were performed in a closed-circulation reactor system using a differential photoacoustic cell at total pressure of 40 Torr in the temperature range of 100 to $350^{\circ}C.$ The CO2 photoacoustic signal varying with the concentration of CO2 during the catalytic reaction was recorded as a function of time. The time-resolved photoacoustic spectra obtained for the initial reaction stage provided precise data of CO2 formation rate. The apparent activation energies determined from the initial rates were 74.7 kJ/mol for the magnetite/chromium oxide catalyst and 50.9 kJ/mol for the copper/zinc oxide catalyst. To determine the reaction orders, partial pressures of CO(g) and H2O(g) in the reaction mixture were varied at a constant total pressure of 40 Torr with N2 buffer gas. For the magnetite/chromium oxide catalyst, the reaction orders with respect to CO and H2O were determined to be 0.93 and 0.18, respectively. For the copper/zinc oxide catalyst, the reaction orders with respect to CO and H2O were determined to be 0.79 and 0, respectively.

A procedure for preparing semiconductor/metal nanowire arrays is described, based on a template method which entails electrochemical deposition into nanometer-wide parallel pores of anodic aluminum oxide films on aluminum. Aligned CdS/Co heterostructured nanowires have been prepared by ac electrodeposition in the anodic aluminum oxide templates. By varying the preparation conditions, a variety of CdS/Co nanowire arrays were fabricated, whose dimensional properties could be adjusted.

It is very difficult to measure the fluid viscosity at the critical point, there are seldom found experimental values of fluid viscosity at the critical point. Few theories can explain the critical viscosity quantitatively. A theory of viscosity previously proposed by authors10 is applied to the fluid at the critical point. This theory can be simplified as a simple form with no adjustable parameters, allowing for easy calculation. Viscosities at the critical point for some substances have been calculated, and calculated results are satisfactory when compared with the observed values.

1,12-diazacyclodocosane-2,11-dione was first isolated from a plant Phyllanthus niruri Linn. Its structure has been determined by means of spectroscopy methods and X-ray crystallography. Two peptide groups in the big ring (lactam) are the main factors influencing intermolecular contacts. The hydrogen-bond interaction of these hydrophilic groups is observed in the crystal structure. Meanwhile, C-H···O hydrogen bonds in molecules contribute to the formation of the whole crystal. These two kinds of hydrogen-bond form six- member rings among molecules. This compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P-1 with a= 9.588(1) $\AA$, b= $9.850(1)\AA$, c = $11.810(1)\AA$, $\alpha=$ 68.18(1)$^{\circ}C$ , $\beta=$ 84.98(1), $\gamma$ = 86.03(1)$^{\circ}C$ , V = $1030.66(17)\AA3$ , Z = 2. A disorder of five-member carbon chain in the whole ring is observed in the title compound. The bond angle 105.8(4) is determined for a extreme configuration C(14)-C(15)-C(16), and 117.7(10) for another extreme configuration C(14')-C(15')-C(16'). In this crystal, two molecules are tied each other by short intermolecular hydrogen bonds, the oxygen atom being tied by hydrogen bond to nitrogen atom of another two molecules. The NMR and IR spectral data coincides to the structure of the compound.

With the invention of the inlaying technique for celadon in the latter half of the 12th century, the Koryo potters reached a new height of artistic and scientific achievement in ceramics chemical technology. Inlaid celadon shards, collected in 1991 during the surface investigation of Kangjin kilns found on the southwestern shore of South Korea, were imbedded in epoxy resin and polished for cross-section examination. Backscattered electron images were taken with an electron microprobe equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer. The spectrometer was also used to determine the composition of micro-areas. Porcelain stone, weathered rock of quartz, mica, and feldspar composition were found to be the raw material for the body and important components in the glaze and white inlay. The close similarity between glaze and black inlay in the microstructure suggests that the glaze material was modified by adding clay with high iron content, such as biotite, for use as black inlay. The deep soft translucent quality of celadon glaze is brought about by its microstructure of bubbles, remnant and devitrified minerals, and the schlieren effect.

The concentration of B in steels is important due to its influence on mechanical properties of steel such as hardenability, hot workability, and creep resistance. An analytical method has been developed to determine B in steel samples by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). National Institute of Standard and Technology Standard Reference Material (NIST SRM) 348a was analyzed to validate the analytical method. The steel sample was digested in a centrifuge bottle with addition of aqua regia and $^{10}B$ spike isotope. Sample pH was then adjusted to higher than 10 to precipitate most matrix elements such as Fe, Cr, and Ni. After centrifugation, the supernatant solution was passed through a cation exchange column to enhance the matrix separation efficiency. B recovery efficiency was about 37%, while matrix removal efficiency was higher than 99.9% for major matrix elements. The isotope dilution method was used for quantification and the determined B concentration was in good agreement with the certified value.

A new insecticide, bistrifluron acts as an inhibitor of insect development and interferes with the cuticle formation of insects. Since it shows low acute oral and dermal toxicities, it can be one of potent insecticides. Based on X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling, the structural studies of bistrifluron have been carried out.

$(-)-\beta-Narcotine$ (6), a phthalideisoquinoline alkaloid, was synthesized conveniently by the direct condensation of cotarnine (1) and iodomeconine (2) prepared by aromatic iodination using thallium trifluoroacetate/KI and by the successive reduction of resulting $iodo-{\beta}-narcotine$ (5) with aluminum amalgam. Its structure including a stereochemistry was confirmed by instrumental analyses. This synthetic alkaloid was degraded with ethyl chloroformate at room temperature to afford the chloro-carbamate 6b as a crystalline intermediate, which was unexpectedly converted into the carbinol 8 by exchange of Cl with OH of water contained in the solvents and the ethoxy-carbamate 9, probably because of ethanol added to chloroform as a solvent stabilizer during the purification by column chromatography.

Calculations are presented for the molecule HC2N and its geometrical isomers. The structures, harmonic frequencies and dipole moments are reported. The potential energy surface of the [H,C,C,N] system is investigated in detail, and the transition states, intermediate complexes, and the energies of barrier for the isomerization and dissociation reactions are computed in order to determine the reaction paths and to estimate the stability of the isomers. The barriers of isomerization among HCCN, HCNC and HNCC are computed to be rather large and dissociations of these molecules are highly endothermic, indicating that these molecules are kinetically stable. The association reactions HC + CN→HCCN, HC + NC→HCNC, and HN + CC →HNCC are barrierless and very exothermic, suggesting that they may be considered as efficient means of producing the HCCN and the isomers in the laboratory and in interstellar space.

The transformation devised by Lecomte and Ueda for the study of resonance structures in the multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) is used to analyze partial photofragmentation cross section formulas in MQDT analogous to Fano's resonance formula obtained in the previous work for the system involving two open and one closed channels. Detailed comparison of the MQDT results with the configuration mixing (CM) ones is made. Resonance structures and their geometrical relations in the MQDT formulation are revealed and classified by combining Lecomte and Ueda's theory with the geometrical method devised to study the coupling between background and resonance scatterings.

Since surfactant or emulsifiers remained on the nanoparticle surface significantly affect the physicochemical properties, the biodegradation rate, the biodistribution, and the biocompatibility of nanoparticles, surfactant-free nanoparticles should be good candidate. surfactant-free PLGA nanoparticles were successfully prepared by both the dialysis method and the solvent diffusion method. The PLGA nanoparticles prepared using the solvent diffusion method has a smaller particle size than the dialysis method. The solvent diffusion method was better for a higher loading efficiency than the dialysis method but the nanoparticle yield was lower. Testosterone (TST) release from the PLGA nanoparticles was dependent on the particle size rather than the drug contents. Testosterone release from the PLGA nanoparticles prepared by the solvent diffusion method using acetone was faster than those prepared by the dialysis method. TST release from the PLGA nanoparticles prepared by the solvent diffusion method using acetone and the dialysis method using dimethylformamide (DMF) was completed for 4 days while the PLGA nanoparticles prepared by the dialysis method using acetone showed approximately 80% TST release after 4 days. Since the PLGA nanoparticle degradation ratio was below 20% within 5 days at all samples while TST release completed within 4 days, TST release was dependent on the diffusion mechanism rather than degradation.

Two novel calixarene-based fluoroionophores were synthesized. Their conformations were confirmed to 1,3-alternate by X-ray crystal structures. From CHEF by blocking the PET mechanism in fluorescence spectra, we observed $In^{3+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ selectivity over other metal ions. For $In^{3+}$ion, calix[4]-bis-azacrown-5 showed about 20 times more sensitive than calix[4]-mono-azacrown-5 because the source of the binding selectivity comes from the calixarene framework and azacrown ligand by controlling the fluorescence and PET mechanisms as-sociated with the amine moiety.

Liquid chromatography/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-APCI-MS) has been used for the determination of sulfonamides in meat. Five typical sulfonamides were selected as target compounds, and beef meat was selected as a matrix sample. As internal standards, sulfapyridine and isotope labeled sulfamethazine (${13}^C_6$-SMZ) were used. Compared to the results of recent reports, our result have shown improved precision to a RSD of 1.8% for the determination of sulfamethazine spiked with 75 ng/g level in meat.

In this paper we have presented the results of diffusion behavior of model systems for eight liquid n-alkanes ($C_{12}$-$C_{44}$) in a canonical (NVT) ensemble at several temperatures using molecular dynamics simulations. For these n-alkanes of small chain length n, the chains are clearly <$R_{ee}^2$>/6<$R_g^2$>>1 and non-Gaussian. This result implies that the liquid n-alkanes over the whole temperatures considered are far away from the Rouse regime, though the ratio becomes close to the unity as n increases. Calculated self-diffusion constants $D_{self}$ are comparable with experimental results and the Arrhenius plot of self-diffusion constants versus inverse temperature shows a different temperature dependence of diffusion on the chain length. The global rotational motion of n-alkanes is examined by characterizing the orientation relaxation of the end-to-end vector and it is found that the ratio ${\tau}1/{\tau}2$ is less than 3, the value expected for a isotropically diffusive rotational process. The friction constants ${\xi}$of the whole molecules of n-alkanes are calculated directly from the force auto-correlation (FAC) functions and compared with the monomeric friction constants ${\xi}_D$ extracted from $D_{self}$. Both the friction constants give a correct qualitative trends: decrease with increasing temperature and increase with increasing chain length. The friction constant calculated from the FAC's decreases very slowly with increasing temperature, while the monomeric friction constant varies rapidly with temperature. By considering the orientation relaxation of local vectors and diffusion of each site, it is found that rotational and translational diffusions of the ends are faster than those of the center.

In the present work, we studied thiram on silver surface by SERS. Investigations of disulfides with SERS revealed that the molecules undergo a surface reaction on silver, namely easy cleavage of the S-S bond. We believe that the two S atoms of resonance formed from the thiram may be chemisorbed strongly on Ag sol. This resonance form adheres perpendicularly to the Ag surface via the two S atoms, since the ${\delta}(CH3)$ and n (CN) mode perpendicular to the surface showed strong enhancement. The important roles of halide anion adsorption have been discussed and the pH effects of thiram on Ag sol in acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions were examined.

The ring opening of epoxides with elemental iodine and bromine in the presence of three diamine podands 7-9 as new catalysts affords vicinal iodo alcohols and bromo alcohols in high yields. This new procedure occurs regioselectively under neutral and mild conditions in various aprotic solvents even when sensitive functional groups are presented.

If the surfaces of vesicles are chemically modified so that they can be dispersed in organic solvents, the application of vesicular colloids may be expanded. A polymerizable surfactant (BDAC) and nonpolymerizable bipolar surfactant (BPAS) were synthesized in multi-steps. Large vesicles composed of BDAC and BPAS with embedded a cross-linking agent (divinylbenzene) underwent a radical polymerization. BPAS was extracted out using methanol (skeletonization). The headgroup of BDAC was cleaved off via hydrolysis in an acidic condition to yield vesicles where surfaces were covered with -COOH groups. There was no significant change in the overall shape. The skeletonized vesicles appear to have many holes with diameters up to about 25 nm. The holes retained even after hydrolysis. The hydrolyzed vesicles were not dispersed in water and most organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and chloroform, but dispersed in methanol.

Tetracyclic pyrido[2,3-b]azepine derivatives 4a-d and 4f as analogues of mirtazapine were synthesized via N-acyliminium ion cyclization by using aromatic rings such as benzene and thiophene ring as a ${\pi}-nucleophile$, and evaluated for the binding affinity for ${\alpha}2-adrenoceptor$. Among tested compounds, 2,3,9,13b-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[f]pyrrolo[2,1-a]pyrido[2,3-c]azepine (4a) was the most potent (Ki = 0.26 ${\mu}M)$ but showed about 3-fold less binding affinity than mirtazapine (Ki = 0.08 ${\mu}M)$ for a2-adrenoceptor.

Reaction of tetrahomodioxa p-phenylcalix[4]arene with alkyl halide and NaH in DMF leads to the title tetra-alkylated derivatives, 7,13,21,27-tetra-phenyl-29,30,31,32-tetraalkyloxy-2,3,16,17-tetrahomo-3,17-dioxacalix [4]arenes, their preferred conformations were determined by NMR spectra as C-1,2-alternate. The molecular structure of allyl derivative has been solved by X-ray diffraction methods. The molecules have a conformation with pseudo center of symmetry. The benzene ring A is up, ring C is down, B and D rings are flat with respect to the plane of the macrocyclic ring.

A new solvent polymeric membrane sensor based on tetra(p-chlorophenyl)porphyrinato manganese (III) acetate is described which demonstrates excellent selectivity toward the triiodide ion. The electrode has a linear dynamic range between 1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M and 7.0 ${\times}$$10^{-6}$M with a Nernstian slope of $-59.6{\pm}1$ mV per decade and a detection limit of 5.0 ${\times}$$10^{-6}$M. The proposed sensor revealed good selectivities for triiodide over a wide variety of other anions and could be used in a pH range 2-9. The electrode can be used for at least two months without any considerable divergence in potential. It was applied as indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of the triiodide and As(III) ions.
