To examine the irrigation water uses in Sunjin river basin, existing status and operation records of headworks facilities including reservoirs, pumping stations, tube wells, and diversion dams were surveyed and analyzed for the period of 1994∼1998. Daily irrigation demand and water use were estimated for the irrigated paddy field using penman equation, Thank model, reservoir water balance model and daily pumping rate of pumping stations. Irrigation water use from multi-purpose dams in the basin was not included in this study.

GPS(Global Positioning System) surveying is an effective method using satellite measurement system and can be applied to construction of digital map of irrigation canal networks. In this study, GPS surveying method for irrigation structures was developed. A selected main canal of an irrigation district were surveyed by GPS. The obtained surveying results were corrected by post-processed DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) and imported to GIS for the digital map construction.

A decision support system for determining reservoir capacity, named as KORESIDSS (KOwaco's REservoir SIzing Decision Support System), was developed. The system is composed of three subsystems; a database/information subsystem, a model subsystem, and an output subsystem. This system is operated using MS-Windows with a GUI (Graphic User Interface) system developed using Visual Basic 5.0. As a continuous runoff model, the DAWAST model (DAily WAtershed STreamflow model) developed by Noh(1991) was and its analysis module was developed. This system was applied to a newly-planned dam, the Cheongyan Dam, Which will be located in Cheongyang-Gun, Chungcheongnam-Do and it was proved to be applicable in determining reservoir storage.

A system for evaluating streamflow data (KORSAS) was developed, and is operated using PC based Windows to help the hydrological observation practitioner's working in Korea Water Resources Corporation (KOWACO). This system has modules including; DB access and data management, flow measurement arranging, H-Q relation deriving, area rainfall calculating, flow calculating, and flow evaluating modules. Evaluation of observed streamflow is accomplished through the following processes. First, hourly streamflow data is calculated from water level data stored in a DB server by applying the rating relationship between water level and flow rates derived from the past flow measurements. Second, hourly areal rainfal data is calculated from point data stored in the DB server by applying Thiessen networks. Third, hydrographs are displayed on a daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonal duration basis, and are compared to hydrographs of reservoir inflow, hydrographs at water level observation stations and hydrographs derived from simulated results using models.

Regulated Deficit Irrigation (RDI) is one of the most important measures for the water-saving and high yield of crops. RDI is based on the crop and water relations. The theories of RDI were analyzed using the experiment data in Shaanxi and Gansu Province. There are several problems of RDI in practical use, which include; the uncertainty of crop-water relations, the proper growth stages and water deficit degree of RDI applied, and the requirements of RDI to irrigation system and irrigation techniques.

Two application rates (9 and 18 t/ha) of poultry litter and a recommended rate of commercial fertilizer were studied to determine their effects on nutrient (N and P) losses in surface and subsurface runoff and loadings in soil layers from conventionally-tilled com by the treatments. The model predicted higher sediment losses than observed data from all treatments. The overpredicted sediment losses resulted in overprediction of organic-N and sediment-P losses in surface runoff. Simulated soluble-P losses in surface runoff were close to observed data, while NO3-N losses in surface runoff were underpredicted from all treatments. Observed NO3-N concentrations in leachate at 1.0-m depth from commercial fertilizer treatment were fairly well predicted. But the concentratins were overpredicted from poultry litter treatments due to high simulation of organic-N mineralization simulated by the model.

In this presentation I would like to introduce the Rural Sewerage Project, subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), for the purpose of water quality conservation and improvement of life in rural areas of Japan. Specifically, it will cover background information on the inauguration of the Project, its strong points, wastewater technology and some of its problems, system of the Project, etc.

Composting of hog manure amended with sawdust trials lasted three weeks and used pilot-scale in bin composting system. Results showed that the rise temperature and carbon dioxide evolution in compost during the composting decomposition process were affected by the aeration method, pH, C/N, moisture content, bulk density and particle size distribution. No significant differences existed in biophysical properties of the composit produced from the continuous and intermittent aeration method. The intermittent aeration was very successful in compost odor control and required less time to reach stability than the continuous aeration.

Analyses, in which load was regarded as instant load and gradual step load, respectively, were performed with data measured on a gradually loaded field, and the results were inspected to find the effect of load conditions, and the final settlements which were predicted by Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, and Monden's methods were compared with each other. Settlement curves in which load was regarded as instant load and gradual step load being to coincide at twice the time of duration of embankment. On the ground installed vertical drain, from the results of Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, Monden's, Curve fitting I, and Curve fitting II (simple, carrillo) methods it was concluded that Asaoka, Curve fitting I, and Curve fitting II methods are reliable for prediction final settlement with back analysis.

Permeable polymer concrete can be applied to roads, sidewalks, river embankment, drain pipes, conduits, retaining walls, yards, parking lots, plazas, interlocking blocks, etc. This study is to explore a possibility of utilizing industrial by-products, a blast furnace slag and a fly ash, as fillers for permeable polymer concrete. Different mixing proportions are tried to find an optimum mixing proportion of permeable polymer concrete. The tests are carried out at 20$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ and 60$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$ relative humidity. At 7 days of curing, compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strengths and water permeability ranged between 239~285kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 107~133kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 37~46kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 4.612~5.913$\ell$/$\textrm{cm}^2$/h, respectively. It is concluded that the blast furnace slag and fly ash can be used in permeable polymer concrete.

Dwindling supplies and increasing costs of conventional highway materials used in road construction as well as concerns over shrinking landfill spaces prompt researchers to investigate the use of waste products, such as fly ash, as substitute materials in highway construction. The highway industry is capable of utilizing waste materials in large quantities if their effect on pavement performance proves to be technically, economically and environmentally satisfactory. This research examines the effects of fly ash when used as partial replacement of aggregate in asphaltic concrete mixtures. And measuring the effect of fly ash on bulk specific gravity, air void, indirect tensile strength (ITS) under dry and wet conditioning as well as the tensile strength ratio (TSR) of asphaltic concrete mixture. The results indicated that asphaltic concrete mixtures containing 2% and 5% fly ash produced about the same TSR value as control mixture. And all of the mixtures met the minimum ITS and TSR requirements established by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SC DOT) for Type 1A surface courses. At this point and with this limited study, these asphaltic concrete mixtures is recommended in several applications such as parking lot, secondary roads and driveways.
