This paper presents an automatic tele-inspection scheme for the remotely manufacturing process. The remote-manufacturing process is continuously monitored and a crucial process is captured by CCD Camera. The captured image is compressed by neural network and JPEG, and it is sent directly to the assembly plant for incoming inspection. Massive image data require broadband channel to transmit them to remote distance, but sender is able to transmit them to receiver in use common channel by compressing massive image data in the high ratio. After the receiver reconstructs the compressed image to be transmitted, the reconstructed image is also directly used for automatic inspection of the process. The Experimental results show that the proposed inspection mechanism could be effectively implemented for real applications.

In the hot strip mill, not only the chatter vibration of finishing stands has a great influence on the surface quality of hot products, but also that is the major factors to shorten the life of rolling mill housings or to create the machine troubles. As long as the mill has been operating, the low frequency chatter at the early mill stands (No.2 and No.3) of POSCO's Kwangyang No.2 hot strip mill had been detected when rolling certain types of products, e.g., thinner gage, hard grade products. For several years, the experimental study was undertaken to analyze the cause of the chatter vibration and establish the methods to avoid the vibration to acceptable levels. The analysis and solution to the vibration problem with recommendations and revised maintenance practice are the subjects of this article.

Since 1980, Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) have performed 8 round robin tests in gauge block measurement in order to evaluate the measurement capability and the state of environment control of National Calibration and Test Institutions. Two sets of five gauge blocks (nominal size : 1, 3, 10, 25, 100 mm) having different thermal expansion coefficients for each set were circulated for the measurement, and the measurement results were collected and analyzed to evaluate the traceability to the standard of KRISS. The method and results of the test are presented.

More accurate inspection method for facilities of nuclear power plants is required to guarantee the continuous and stable energy supply. The portion of inspection for pipes and pressure vessels is relatively big in the power plants. Conventional inspection methods using ultrasonic wave, x-ray and eddy current for nondestructive testing in nuclear power plants have been performed as the method of contact with objects to be inspected. With this reason these methods have been taken relatively much time, money and manpower. And the area to be inspected is limited by the location of probe or film. These difficulties make the inspection into a time-consuming work. We propose an optical defect detection method using phase shifting realtime holographic interferometry. This method has an advantage that the inspection can be performed at a time for relatively wide area illuminated by the laser beam, a coherent light source and can help an inspector recognize not only defects but also the high stressed areas. In this paper we show that the quantitative measurement using holographic interferometry and image processing for defect in pressure vessels is possible.

We have developed the unconventional robot arm which is composed of the two main parts, one is a ball screw and the other is a robot arm. The dynamic systems of the robot arm and ball screw are unstable systems coupled with each other. The ball screw mechanism is unstable system but controllable system. The robot arm's dynamics is quasi stable system when ball screw's angular position is zero, else, unstable system. Our system has the duality between stability and controllability at the view point of control. This duality causes difficulty to control of the robot arm using normal control law. We have investigated the location of the characteristic roots of the dynamic equation. And we have found out that the best condition for the control of the arm is quasi stable state. In this paper, we have proposed multiple control laws which are consist of three components to guarantee the stability and controllability simultaneously. The computer simulations were carried out based on VSC about the angular position control of the robot arm, and it is confirmed that the good performances could be obtained by using new controller.

Non-destructive inspection techniques using laser have been broading their application areas as well as growing their measurement skills together with the rapid development of circumferential technology like fiber optics, computer and image processing. The ESPI technique is already on the stage of on-line testing with commercial products in developed country nations. Especially, this technique is expected to be applied to the nuclear industry, automobile and aerospace because it is proper for the vibration measurement and it can be applied to objects of a high temperature. This paper describes the use of the ESPI system for measuring vibration patterns on the reflecting objects. Using this system, high-quality Jo fringes for identifying mode shapes are displayed. A bias vibration is introduced into the reference beam to shift the Jo fringes so that fringe shift algorithms can be used to determine vibration amplitude. Using this method, amplitude fields for vibrating objects were obtained directly from the time-average interferograms recorded by the ESPI system.

The equations of motion for a basic industrial robotic system which has a rigid or a flexible arm are derived by Lagrange's equation, respectively. Especially, for the deflection of the flexible arm, the assumed mode method is employed. These equations are highly nonlinear equations with nonlinear coupling between the variables of motion. In order to design the control law for the rigid-arm robot, Hunt-Su's nonlinear transformation method and Marino's feedback equivalence condition are used with linear quadratic regulator(LQR) theory. The control law for the rigid-arm robot is employed to input the desired path and to provide the required nonlinear transformations for the flexible-arm robot to follow. By using the implicit Euler method to solve the nonlinear equations, the comparison of the motions between the flexible and the rigid robots and the effect of flexibility are examined.

Effects of frictional laws on finite element solutions in metal forming were investigated in this paper. A rigid-viscoplastic finite element formulation was given with emphasis on the frictional laws. The Coulomb friction and the constant shear friction laws were compared through finite element analyses of compression of rings and cylinders with different aspect ratios, ring-gear forging, multi-stage cold extrusion and hot strip rolling under the isothermal condition. It has been shown that two laws may yield quite different results when the aspect ratio of a process and the fractional contact region are large.

본 논문에서는 전기유동유체(Electro-Rheological Fluid : ERF)를 함유하는 지능구조물의 동적 모델링 및 진동제어를 수행하였다. 먼저 실리콘 오일을 기본용매로 하여 조성된 ERF의 복소 전단모듈러스를 전장부하와 가진 주파수의 함수로 동적 회전모드 실험을 통하여 도출한 후, 이를 샌드위치 보 이론과 연계하여 동적 모델링을 실시하였다. 도출된 6차 편미분방정식 형태의 지배 방정식을 유한요소 모델로 이산화하여 전장부하에 따른 지능구조물의 동탄성 특성값인 감쇠 고유 주파수 및 모달 손실계수를 주파수 영역에서 얻었다. 그리고 ERF를 함유한 샌드위치 형태의 지능구조물을 제작한 후 실험적으로 얻은 동탄성 특성값과 모델에 의해 예측된 동탄성 특성값을 비교 고찰하여 제시된 동적 모델에 대한 타당성을 입증하였다. 또한 모델을 통해 전장부하 함수로 예측된 주파수 응답곡선 중에서 각 주파수 대역에 대해 최소 변위가 되는 응답곡선을 요구응답으로 설정한 후, 그에 해당하는 전장부하를 선정하는 논리적인 능동 진동제어 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 제어알고리즘의 유용성을 입증하기 위해 실험적으로 수행된 능동 진동제어 결과를 주파수영역과 시간영역에서 제시하였다.

환형판은 항공기, 선박, 자동차, 섬유기계 등에서 널리 사용되고 있다. 최근에는 각종기계 또는 구조물을 경량화하고 크기를 줄이기 위하여, 두께가 변화하는 환형판을 기계요소설계에 많이 응용하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 회전관성과 전단변형을 고려하여 두께가 변화($H=h_0(1-{\alpha}x^n)$, n=1, 2, 3, 4)하는 환형판의 동적 모델링을 하였다.

This paper presents an indirect cutting force measuring system, which uses the current signals from the AC servo drive units of the horizontal machining center, with its applications to the adaptive regulation of the cutting forces in various milling processes and to the on-line monitoring of tool breakage. A typical model for the feed-drive control system of a horizontal machining center is developed to analyze cutting force measurement from the drive motor. The pulsating milling forces can be measured indirectly within the bandwidth of the current feedback control loop of the feed-drive system. It is shown that the indirectly measured cutting force signals can be used in the adaptive controller for cutting force regulation. The whole scheme has been embedded in the commercial machining center and a series of cutting experiments on the face cutting processes are performed. The adaptive controller reveals reliable cutting force regulating capability against the various cutting conditions. It is also shown that the tool breakage in milling can be detected within one spindle revolution by adaptively filtering the current signals. The effect of the cutter run-out has been considered for the reliable on-line detection of tool breakage.

This paper develops a robot arm for propeller blade grinding. The grinding work requires a high stiffness robot arm to reduce deformation and vibration which are generated during machining operation. Conventional articulated robots have serial connecting links from the base to the gripper. Thus, they have very weak structure to the stiffness for grinding operation. Stewart Platform is a typical parallel robotic mechanism with very high stiffness but it has small work space and large installation space. This research proposes a new grinding robot arm by combining parallel mechanism with serial mechanism. Therefore, the robot has large range of work space as well as high stiffness. This paper introduces the automatic system for propeller grinding utilizing the robot and the design of proposed robot arm.

The effect of atmospheric gas on the surface cleanliness in the batch annealing furnace(BAF) is presented. It is very important to improve the surface cleanliness to investigate the surface defects such as carbon contamination, smudge and yellow color phenomenon on the surface of steel sheet. In order to study the occurrence of surface defects of steel sheet, the annealing operations were carried out in the H2 BAF with 75% hydrogen and conventional BAF with 4% hydrogen. The hydrogen is important factor that affect the energy saving in the entire annealing cycle and the surface cleanliness. In the conventional BAF, it shows that to protect the yellow color phenomenon the proper finish temperature is $80^{\circ}C$ and in the smudge sample the oxidized thickness has the depth of $120{\AA}$.

The measured vibration on a machine or a structure is shaped by the excitation waveform and the path transfer function. Mechanism diagnostics tends to focus on retrieving source features by minimizing the effects of the structiral path, while in structural diagnostics we are more interested in minimizing source effects and retrieving path parameters. In structural diagnostics, therefore, there are experimental issues of gathering date that are independent source effects and finding a transfer function signature that reveals structural defects. This paper describes how the transfer function can be obtained more accurately by experiment using the compatibility relationship which is newly discovered.

The paper describes the vibration characteristics of the mechanical system consisting of a uniform Timoshenko beam with a guided mass and an elastic spring support. The free end of the beam does not rotate and the spring attatched to the guided mass is elastically restrained against translation. The guided mass is assumed to be a rigid body having a finite size, but not a mass point as it has been assumed so far. The effect of magnitudes, rotary inertia and the size of the guided mass on the vibration characteristics is fully investigated by the numerical simulation using FEM and experiment. In order to verify the eigenvalue sensitivity for considered system, comparison exact solutions with FEM is conducted, and a good agreement between two solutions is also highlighted.

Errors included in solutions obtained by the boundary element method are generally larger than those by the finite element method in the case that the number of discreted elements is small. One of the reasons is supposed to be attributed to the error which will be produced in the numerical integration of the singular functions in two dimensional elastic problem. Then, treatment of analytical integration to reduce computing time and to decrease errors of boundary element method are proposed.
