The purpose of this paper is to study the basic medicine of the Gojoseon(古朝鮮) dynasty, especially 5 fields which are the theory of yin-yang(陰陽論), the theory of 5 progressive phasis(五行論), the theory of mind-body(心身論), Seon-gyo(仙敎), acupuncture(鍼術). The theory of yin-yang can be studied in the point of contents of it, not the name of it. Whan-in(桓因) is the god of sky, Woong(熊) is the god of earth. Whan-woong(桓雄), who is the son of Whan-in(桓因), came down from the sky, turned into a man. Woong(熊) lived in the cave, eating garlic and wormwood for 21days, got out of it and turned into a woman. The changes occurred by the mutual aid of Whan-woong and Woong. The theory of 5 progressive phasis can be founded in the archery. The bow and arrow is made of cucumber, horn and ligament of cow, glue made from airbladders of sciaenoid fish, which belong to mock(木). Beejeongbeepal(非丁非八) and make strong one's abdomen(腹實) belong ti soo(水), empty out one's chest(胞虛) belongs to whar(畵), thrusting(前推泰山) belongs to mock(木), shooting(發如虎尾) belongs to geom(金). Basically mind and body have no differance. Mind without body does not exist. Exocism excites the exorcist to the condition of whar(火). There are 3 parts, as treaLment, prevent, regimen, in the medicine. 2 parts as idealism and realism are in regimen. Seon-gyo(仙敎) belongs to the idealism of regimen. In China, is became Taoism(仙敎) later The art of accupunture was developed in the Gulf of pohair(渤海灣).

In the literatual study on the cerebral vascular dementia, the results were as follows : 1. Cerebral vascular dementia is so called apoplectic dementia, because it almost occurs after apoplexy, the attack rate has gradually increased by increase of life, so it exert a harmful influence to geriatric diseases. 2. The etiological factors are summarized on deficiency in the heart, kidney, liver(心, 腎, 肝虛), pathogenic wind(豊) pathogenic fire(火) phlegm(痰) and stagnated blood(瘀血) in the oriental medicine, and multiple cerebral infarction, cerebral anemia, decrease of cerebral vascular flow are etiological factors in the occidental medicine. 3. The region of infarction and attack of cerebral vascular dementia have a close connection, and generally the cerebral vascular dementia easily occur in injury of white matter of brain. 4. Symptoms of cerebral vascular dementia are dysphasia, walking disorder, hemiplegia, sensory paralysis, disturbance of memory, judgement, calculation, emotion incontinence, speech impediment, silence or talkative, lower thinking ability and depersonalization, and symptoms are aggravated by stage. 5. Therapeutic herb medicines are Palpungsan(八風散), Baepungsan(排風散), Jinsaanshinhwan(辰砂安神丸), Sabacksan(四白散), Kanghwalyupungsan(姜活愈風散), Woohwangchungshimhwan(牛黃淸心丸), and they are used to dispelling pathogenic wind(祛風), soothe the nerves(安神), dispel pathogenic heat from lung, nourish the blood(淸肺養血).

Hyang-Yack-Ku-Keup-Bang(鄕藥救急方) is our own, medical work written about the middle of the time of Korea Dynasty. I restored and researched this book because it needed to be illuminated about its medico-historic value and then I came to some conclusions as follows. 1. Hyang-Yack-Ku-Keup-Bang was published in Dae-jang-do-kam(大藏都監) of Kanghaw island(江華島) about the middle of Korea Dynasty. Choi Ja-ha(崔自河) republished it on original publication ground in Euiheung(義興) of Kyungsang-Province(慶尙道) in July, Taejong's(太宗) 17th year of Chosen Dynasty (A.D.1417) and this book was published again in Chungcheng Province(忠淸道) in Sejong's(世宗) 9th year(A.D.1427). The book published in Taejong's days was in the possession of books department of Kung-nae-cheng(宮內廳) in Japan and was the oldest medical book of existing ones. 2. Bang-Jung-Hyang-Yack-Mock-Cho-Bu(方中鄕藥目草部) of this book was originally intended to be adjusted in each division with the title of Bang-Jung-Hyang-Yack-Mock(方中鄕藥目). But Herb part(草部) only followed editing progress of Jeung-Lew-Bon-Cho(證類本草), the rest is not divided into each part and is together arranged at the below of Herb part with the title of Bang-Jung-Hyang-Yack-Mock-Cho-Bu. The Korean inscriptions on some drugstuffs in this book are different between Native Name(鄕名) of three volumes of provisions and general-spoken(俗云) of Bang-Jung-Hyang-Yack-Mock-Cho-Bu. In this, it is estimated that the publishing time and editor of tile volume of provisions and Bang-Jung-Hyang-Yack-Mock-Cho-Bu are different. I think Choi Ja-ha compiled this behind three volumes of provisions when he published. 3. This book picked some prescriptions which consisted of obtainable drugs with ease in Korea in the books of Chell-Keum-Yo-Bang(千金要方), Oi-Dae-Bi-Yo(外臺秘要), Tae-Peong-Sung-Hye-Bang(太平聖惠方), Ju-Hu-Bang(?後方), Kyung-Hum-Yang- Bang(經驗良方) Bo-Je-Bon-Sa-Bang(普濟本事方) Bi-Ye-Baik-Yo-Bang(備預百要方) and so on and got together our own prescriptions. On the whole Bi-Ye-Baik-Yo-Bang was a chief referrence book, On this, other books referred to and corrected. 4. In provisions quoted from Hyang-Yack-Jip-Sung-Bang(鄕藥集成方), there are seven provisions; leg-paralysis part, coughing part, headache part, obstetrics part, etc. don't show in this book. This is why Choi Ja-ha published only certain texts on Dae-jang-do-kam edition his own posession. So we can think the existing edition has a little misses compared with original edition. 5. This book recorded only names of drugstuffs in animal drug department like fowls, crab, goldbug, earthworm, etc. and didn't tell us ways of taking those. This is effect of Buddhist culture on medicine. This is efforts to practice 'Don't murder';one of Five Prohibition of Buddhism. 6. Beacause this book was published at the time, when our originative medicine would be set forth. This followed the Chinese ways in Theory, Treatment, Prescription and used 'Hyang Yack' in Medication out of theory of Korean medicine, which was a transitional form. So this is all important material which tell us aspects of development of 'Hyang Yack' the middle of Korea Dynasty.and this is also the beginning of originative, medical works like Dong-Eui-Bo-Kam(東醫寶鑑), Dong-Eui-Su-Bo-Won(東醫壽世保元). 7. There are few contents based on 'Byen-Jeung-Lon-Chi(辨證論治)'in this book. So we can see this book is not for doctors who study medical thoughts but for general public who suffer from diseases resulted from war. Because this book was written for a first-aid treatmeant, this is an index of medical service for the people those days. And this is also an useful datum for first-aid medicine or military medicine in these modern days. 8. Nowadays, parts of learned world of Korean medicine disregard essential theories and want to explain Korean medicine only by the theories or the methods of Western medicine. Moreover they don't adopt Chinese and Japanese theorys & thoughts about Oriental medicine in our own style and just view in there level. What was worse, there is a growing tendency for them to indulge in a trimming policy of scholarship and to take others' ideas. I think these trends to ignore our own medical thoughts involving growth of 'Hyang Yack' in the middle of Korea Dynasty, Dong-Eui-Bo-Kam and Dong-Eui-Su-Se-Bo-Won. So we, as researchers of Korean medicine, must get out of this tendency, and take over brilliant tradition and try to develop originative Korean medicine.

The physiological signals measured by Oriental Medicine instruments have been analyzed quantitatively in the view of the rule of promoting and counteracting relation of five evolutive phases theory. We tried to reduce the physiological signals measured by EAV(Elec-tro-Acupuncture according to Voll) and IR thermography to the representation of five evelutive phases. The EAV index and local skin temperature on acupuncture points of each phases measured and normalized so that the total value of five phases became unity. We assumed that the normalized EAV index and local skin temperature mean the deficiency or excess of Qi for each phases. The state of Qi distribution for each phases were approximately agree with the diagnostic pattern of O. M. doctor. Taking account of the Qi distribution state of·or the five evolutive phases, we performed a proper needle insertion on acupuncture points to induce the distinct change of Qi for each phases. We compared the measured results with the predictions of Qi variation by the rule of pro- moting and counteracting relation over the five evolutive phases. For all cases, the variation of Qi in the own phase on which a needle insertion was performed were exactly same to the theoretical prediction and partial agreement was shown for the other four phases. The same analysis was carried to the results of skin temperature measurements at accupoints. We found that the local skin temperature at accupoints of each phases shelved a finite change by the needle insertion and the behavior- of its change were strongly correlated to the rule of promoting and counteracting relation of five evolutive phases.

In the ancient times, the medical practice relied primarily upon human instincts and experiences at the same time, shaman's incantations were widely believed to cure diseases, the workings of evil spirits supposedly. For the period from the Old Chosun through Samhan(三韓), Chinese refugees brought a long medical knowledge and skills of the continent. New Chinese medicine, traditional practices and incantations were generally used at this time. In Samhan, however, the last was the most important, performed by a Chongoon(天君). Medicine and the medical system were arranged by the period of the Three Countries(三國時代). No definite record concerning Koguryo remains now. As for Paekje, however, history shows that they set up the system under the Chinese influence, assigning medical posts such as Euibaksa(醫博士, medical doctor), Chaeyaksa(採藥師, pharmacist), and Jukeumsa(呪禁師, medicine man) within Yakbu(藥部, department of medicine). Scientifically advanced, they sent experts to Japan, giving a tremendous influence on the development of the science in ancient Japan. After the unification of the three countries, Shilla(新羅) had theri own system after the model of Dang(唐). This system of the Unified Shilla was continued down to Koryo(高麗) and became the backbone of the future ones.

Through the study of successive literatures from the Han-dynasty(漢代) when
${\\ll}$ Keumkweyeuliak(金궤要略)${\gg}$ was written to modern age, we inspected many types of Onkyuatgtang(溫經湯) and prescriptions including the term of 'Okywg(溫湯)' or 'Chokyung(調經), and look into their composition and symptoms respond to administration of this medicine, The results of this study were as follows; 1. The medicine which makes up Onkyuatgtang was 38kinds from the Han-dynasty to the Ching-dynasty(淸代), and up to the present it summed into 43kinds. 2. Onkywgtang which was composed of different kinds of medicine was 10types from the Hun-dynasty to the Chung-dynasty and added 11types in modern days. Therefore it sumed up into 21types. 3. No Onkyuatgtang is seen more common than that of the same composition as in${\\ll}$ Keumkweyeuliak${\gg}$ in successive literature. The next is the same constituents as in${\\ll}$ Buinyangbangdaejeun(婦人良方大全)${\gg}$ Others were rare. 4. Onkywgtang in${\\ll}$ Keumkweyeuliak${\gg}$ was used to treat cold syndrome of the penetration and conception vessles or uterus of deficiency type(衛任 胞宮의 虛寒) and that in Buinyangbangdaejeun was for cold syndrome of the penetration and conception vessels or uterus of excess type(衛任 胞宮의 虛寒). 5. Other names of Ohylmgtang in${\\ll}$ Keumkweyeuliak${\gg}$ were Daeonrkyungtang(大溫經湯), Chokyungsan(調經散), Chokyungtang(調經湯), Chunkeumchokyungtang(千金調經湯), Chunkeumchokyungsan(千金調經散) and Soonkyungtang(小溫經湯), And the prescription in the same constitution was also called Chokyungonkyungtang(仲景溫經湯), Keumkweonkyungtang(千궤溫經湯) and Sibbionkyunghwan(十二溫經丸). 6. Onkywgtang in${\\ll}$ Buinyangbongdaejeun${\gg}$ of Yangbangonkyungtang(良方溫經湯), Jimionkyungtang(指迷溫經湯), Kyunkwionkyungtang(穹歸溫經湯) and Jinssionkyungtang(陣氏溫經湯). -
Chunggansan(淸肝散) was tested for the effects on detoxication mechanism of alcohol. Chunggansan was treated firstly into samples, and then ethanol intoxicated animal models were set with them. In vitro, the level of lipid peroxide in tissue of liver proportionally decreased with the level of concentration of extract prepared from Chunggansan. In vivo, after the extract was administered to the animal model for seven days, the level of lipid peroxide in liver dependently decreased in proportion of concentration. The glutathione percentage purposely induced acute ethanol intoxicated samples, followed by Chunggansan pre-medicating administration, increased in compare with the group treated with only ethanol. Also, the enzyme activities of ALT, AST, and
${gamma}-GTP$ in liver decreased. -
Cervus elaphus for herb-acupuncture solution (CEHAS) was tested for the effects of free radical generating enzyme and lipid peroxidation in rat's kidney. In vitro, levels of lipid peroxide in tissues of kidney were proportionally decreased to concentration of extracts prepared from CEHAS. They were much more decreased, when lipid peroxidation was induced with ferrous iron (FeII). Also, enzyme activities of xinthine oxidase were decreased. The ratio of type conversion of xanthine oxidase was lowered, two. But, it was not seen changes on enzyme activities of aldehyde oxidase. These results suggest that CEHAS decrease the activities of free radical generating enzymes such as xanthine oxidase which form lipid peroxide.

This experiment was performed in order to study the effects of Gyumsuyukgunjun on the injured tracheal tissue induced
$SO_2$ in rats. Healthy adult male rats weighting about 250g were divided into 4 groups - the Normal group, the Control group, the group of Gyumsuyukgunjun administration for 5 days after$SO_2$ gas exposure (Sample I), and the group of Gyurnsuyukgunjun administration for 10 days before and for 5 days after$SO_2$ gas exposure (Sample II). The results were obtained as follows ; 1. In the trachea Control group, the lesion of the ciliated epithelium was severe and the mucus secretion of the respiratory tract was increased significantly. 2. In the trachea of Sample I group, the lesion of the ciliated epithelium and the mucus secretion of the respiratory tract were decreased compared with Control group. 3. In the trachea of Sample II group, the lesion of the ciliated epithelium and the mucus secretion of the respiratory tract were decreased compared with Control and Sample I group. According to the above results, Gyumsuyukgnjun has significant effects on the injuried tracheal tissue caused by$SO_2$ in rats. -
This study was carried out to investigate the tracheal muscle relaxation of water extracts of three kinds of Coptis rhizoma and also compare their effects with berberine and palmatine, which are the important alkaloid components of Coptis rhizoma, in isolated rat tracheal smooth muscle. As a result Coptis chinenis showed significant tracheal muscle relaxation on KCI-induced contraction and more markedly on carbachol-induced contraction in dose-dependent manner. Coptis japoinin exhibited also tracheal muscle relaxation on both contraction with slightly weaker activities than those of Coptis chinensts. The activities of the root hair of Coptis chinensis were the most weakest in three rhizomas. Berberine and palmatine had strong tracheal muscle relaxation, especially, on carbachol-induced contraction, however, their activities on KCI-induced contraction were weaker than that of Coptis chinenis. The inhibitory effects of three kinds of Coptis rhizoma on the contraction by KCI and carbachol were investigated to explain the process of their tracheal muscle relaxation. All rhizomas inhibited the contraction by both agents, among them, Coptis japonica showed the most significant effect, so indicating that the tracheal muscle relaxation of Coptis rhizoma may be concerned with the blocking of muscarine receptor and
$Ca^{2+}$ channel. -

Coicis Semen is one of the oriental medicine that has been used for the treatment of the diseases such as pulmonary abscess, periappendicular abscess and wart since ancient times. However, the mechanism of the action of the drug is not well studied. This study was done to investigate the effects of Coicis Semen on the host defence mechanism. Effects of Coicis Semen on the immune responses were analysed by measuring the contact hypersensitivity, hemagglutinin, hemolysin and rosette formation, cytotoxicity, and reactive oxygen intermidiates production. As the results, water extract of Coicis Semen administration enhanced the antibodies (hemagglutinin and hemolysin) formation and the appearance of rosette forming cells of the spleen. Also Coicis Semen increased the allogeneic immune response in the mouse, showed cytotoxic activity against human leukemia cell line(K562) and decreased the contact hypersensitivity against dinitroflurobenzene. Also administration of Coicis Senlen slightly increased NK cell activity and enhanced the production of such reactive oxygen intermediates as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide from the macrophages in vivo and in vitro. The above results demonstrate that Coicis Semen has enhancing effects on cellular and humoral immune responses against disease.

This study are performed to reveal the origin of the Sasang constitutional theory made by Lee-jae-ma(李濟馬), confucianist as well as famous oriental doctor, who succeeded to Han- suck-jie(韓錫地)'s Anti-Neo-Confucianism. Han wrote a book na mod Myung-Suen-Lock(明善錄) which criticized Neo-Confucianism formed at times of Song dynasty in China and proposed a new doctrine i.e Anti-Neo-Confucianism. He asserted that The Sacred and Ordinary Men are all the same in nature, and that The Acatul Mind of Universe and The Actual Mind of Human also are all the same ultimately These two assertions cleary contrasted with pre-existing Neo-confucianism led Lee-jae-ma to successively organize Sasang constitutional theoy. This study is aimed to illuminate this point : How under the effects of Han's new doctrine Lee-jae-ma could find four general constitutions due to the functional variation of the four organs. At first, Lee indicated four organs as the very general basement providing human nature for all men including The Sacred. In consequence, he justified one of the Han's assertions that The Sacred and Ordinary Men are all the same in nature. Secondly, Lee indicated the Mind as the actual center which bring forth the individual spontaneity. As far as this individual spontaneity is rightly aimed, which means harmonize his own's with the actual process of the Universe, all men could be The Sacred. So he come to justify the other of Han's assertions that The Actual Mind of Universe and The Actual Mind of Human also are all the same ultimately. Therefore, it is clearly verified that the Lee-jae-ma's Sasang doctrine is the successive achievement origined from Han-suck-jie(韓錫地)'s Anti-Neo-Confucianism abundantly represented in his own book, Myung-Suen-Lock.

In order to study for the principle of the Dan-Jeon respiration and Seon meditation to be ascetic exercises for the sake of experience of Oriental medicine as practical science, they were investigated the theory of the Jeong-Gi-Shin. The results obtained were as fallows ; 1. The Dan-Jeon respiration was Mahayana of ascetic exercises to act demension of Gi to be observed two sides of material and spirit. 2. The Seon meditation was Mahayanea of exercises to experience demension of Shin to be the subject of life directly. 3. Even though Dan-Jeon respiration takes the golden mean of Shin, it belongs to the category of Jeon-Gi to correspond to appearance of material dimension. Seon meditation utilizes the Jeong-Gi in the stage of the golden mean of Shin. As results, Dan-Jeon respiration does not get out of the world of appearance centering around the Gi. But Seon meditation gets out of the world of appearance and utilizers the relativity in the free absoluteness.

$0{\sim}1$ year and$3{\sim}5$ years. 3. Seasonal distribution of IBS attack reveals the peak occurrence in autumn. 4. Duration of treatments, the most frequence is$2{\sim}3$ weeks. 5. Ansinbobitang(安神補脾湯) shows 88.5% of effective rate. -
'Nei Jing(內徑)' first defined the interrelationship of the true and tile false between evil factor affecting health(雅氣) and vital essence energy(精氣). According to 「'Nei Jing(內徑)', the above interrelationship is explained as 'If state of evil domination is considered as sthenia-syndrome(雅氣盛則實), if the consumption of healthy energy Is considered as asenia-syndrome(精氣尊則虛): 'Nei Jing(內徑)', proposed major features of the medicall treatment by 'regluate the vatal energy of asthenia and sthenia, treat the sthenia-syndrome by purgation, and treat the asenia-syndrome by therapy of invigoration(調其氣之虛實, 實則瀉之, 虛則補之): The above interrelationship was interpreted as 'treat the asthenia-syndrome of child organ by invigorating the mother organ(虛者補其母)'in the 69th of 'The Classic on Difficulty',(難經 六十九難). Go-Mu(高武) of Myung-dynasty describe therapy for invigoration and purgation of itself-meridian(自經 補瀉法), which locating acupuncture points according to the Therorr of Five Element in the five shu points of itself-meridian(自經 五유穴), based on the generation in the
${\ulcorner}$ A Synthetical Book of Acupuncture and Moxibustion(針灸聚英)${\lrcorner}$ , Sae-hyun Jang(張世賢) further extended location acupuncture points of the five shu points to the other-meridian in the${\ulcorner}$ Gyeo Jung Do Ju Nan Gyung(校正圖註難經)${\lrcorner}$ Sa-Ahm's 5 Element Acupuncture Method(舍嚴五行鍼法) was originated in 1644, the middle of the Yi-dynasty. It linked the reinforcing and reducing in acupuncture therapy which incorporated tlle asthenia-syndrome and sthenia-syndrome of the hollow organs, based on principle of the Yin Yang 5 Element Theory(陰陽五行學說), not only to the generation in the 5 element(相生關係) but also to the restriction in the 5 element(相剋關係). Furthermore it was devised for the medical treatment by comning therapy for invigoration and purgation of itself-meridian(自經 補瀉法) with that of the other-meridian. Even though many original forms(正形) of the therapy for invigoration and purgation of the Yin Yang 5 Element Theory comply with the principle of the generation and the restriction based on the principle of the Yin Yang 5 Element Theory are abailable, variational forms(變形) are also recognized by examining the nature of the Sa-Ahm's 5 Element Acupuncture Method(舍嚴五行鍼法), For this reason, it is very difficult to understand the Sa-Ahm's 5 Element Acupuncture Method(舍嚴五行鍼法) thoroughly. therefore, those variational forms are obstacles for the beginners to study the Sa-Ahm's 5 Element Acupuncture Method. In order to understand the principle of the practical clinical application of the Sa-Ahm's 5 Element Acupuncture Method, this study investigated which principle was based on the variations of the locating acupuncture points' method for the acupuncture prescription. -

The diagnostic requirements were suggested and explained regarding the systems of differentiation of syptoms and signs in the second year study of standardization and unification of the terms and conditions used for diagnosis in oriental medicine. The systems were as follows : -differential diagnosis according to condition of body fluid, differentiation of syndromes according to the state of qi and blood, differential diagnosis according to reletive excessiveness or deficiency of yin and yang(氣血陰陽津液辨證) -differentiation of diseases according to pathological changes of the viscera and their interrelation(臟腑辨證) -analysing and differentiating of febrile diseases in accordance with the theory of the six channels(傷寒辨證) The individual diagnosis pattern was arranged by the diagnostic requirements in the following odor : another name(異名), notion of diagnosis parrern(證候槪念), index of differentiation of syptoms and sings(辨證指標), the main point of diagnosis(診斷要點), analysis of diagnosis pattern(證候分析), discrimination of diagnosis pattern(證候鑑別), a wayof curing a diseases(治法), prescription(處方) , herbs in common use(常用藥物), dieases appearing the diagnosis pattern(常見疾病), documents(文獻調査). This study was carried out on the basis of the Chinese documents and references. -

The main idea of Sasang medicine is that everyone has his own unique constitution. There are four kinds of constitutions and these are Taeyang, Soyang, Teaum and Soum. Although Sasang medicine is a unique and originative medical theory with creative ideas of Korean traditional medicine, the classification of individual constitution mainly depends on the methods which may not be objectively proven and scientifically understood. This study was carried out tn establish scientific understanding of Sasang medicine by investigating the possible genetic difference among four constitutions. Sasang constitution classification was performed by Sasang medicine research group in Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine and Kyung Hee University, Genomic DNA was prepared from the blood of individuals of different constitutions and RAPD(Random amplified polymorphic DNAs) analysis was then carried out to investigate the possible difference among different constitutions on DNA level. For RAPD analysis, ten different random primers were applied to Teaum, Soyang and Soum group DNA samples and the presence of DNA markers specific for each constitution was investigated. -
${\ulcorner}$ Ilbonseogi${\lrcorner}$ (edited A.D. 720) )was studied to investagate the medical and pharmaceutical exchange among ancient Korea, China and Japan. It seemed that Korean and Chinese traditional medicine was introduced to Japan through Korea. It was also shown in${\ulcorner}$ Ilbonseogi${\lrcorner}$ that Koreans who lived in china and Japan during that time seemed to hove active medical idea exchange. From various facts indicated in${\ulcorner}$ Ilbonseogi${\lrcorner}$ , it was believed that Korean and Chinese traditional medicine was the basis for the foundation of Japanese traditional medicine. -
Herpes simplex viruses(HSV) are one of the most common infectious virus of man. Though chemotherapies and antibiotics against HSV have been developed in many countries, but anti-HSV agents were not satisfactory to mankind by their toxic reaction and side effects. In order to search for anti-HSV agents from Korean traditional prescriptions, we extended the number of specimens. Both methanol extract and boilling water extract of the Korean traditional prescriptions were screened to detect anti-HSV activities by MTT assay. Korean traditional prescriptions showing anti-HSV activities as methanl extracts were Paekyopsan, Chesupwilyungtang, Yongdamsagantang, and prescription 11. Four methanol extracts showing anti-HSV activities were freationated by hexane and their efficacies were tested. Hexane freationations of Paekyopsan, Chesupwilyungtang, and prescription 11 showed in anti-HSV activities both haxane and methanol fractionation.

I studied the oriental psychotherapy and reached the following conclusions. 1. In Oriental medicine, the internal organs considered in relation to mental reaction, and thought concerned with the mental disease. From the ancient times, treated mental disease by the theory of the Five Elements(五行) 2. The purpose of orienatal psychotherapy is the life cultivation through training of True essesse, Vital force, Sprit by disciplining body and breathing and mind. 3. The orienatal psychotherapy made body and mind relaxed, and it conduces to the precation of disease, the promotion of health, the therapy of psycosomatic disorder, neurosis, etc.

There are many factors to evoke pain, for example cold, heat, seven emotion, digestion, fatigue, venemous worms, deficiency of blood etc., and its pathogenesis is complicated. Treatments for pain in oriental medicine are as follows. 1. Pharmacotherapy is a method to treat pain by different effects of herbal medicine, for example, regulating vital energy, activating blood circulation, eliminating phlegm, and dispelling the cold evil etc. 2. Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy is a kind of external application, it has a distinct effect in relieving pain. Recently its operation method has been more developed, so new acupuncture therapies are used in clinics. There are electroacupuncture, auricular acupuncture and injection of drugs at an acupuncture points etc. 3. Oriental physiotherapy is a treatment method to stimulate acupuncture points and meridians. (1) Hot pack, Paraffin bath, Microwave, Ultrasound, Short wave, Infra-red etc. are used to treat cold syndrome by dispersing cold by warming the channels. (2) E.S.T., I.C.T., T.E.N.S., S.S.P., cupping treatment etc. are used to treat disorders of vital energy. (3) Health ion, Carbon, T.D.P., etc are used to treat conic and deficiency syndrome.

In order to improve the qualities of boiling extract the availability of standard compounds was investigated in extract of Scutellariae Radix. The standard compounds used baicalin(1), baicalein(2), and wogonin(3). The availabilities were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) on
$C_18$ column. The extract of RS-4(W/V=10g/100m1) showed the highest availabilities as 7.95% of baicalin(1), 1.04% of baicatein(2), and 0.31% of wogonin(3). -
The odor theory(氣味論) has been defined as the Nature(氣) and the Taste(味) of traditional herbal medicine to find the logic in treatment of various diseases by them. There is a strong possibility these Natures of the drug can be categorized according to yin(陰) and yang(陽). To understand the Hot and the Cold Natures of traditional herbal drugs in scientific approaches, changes in skin, rectal temperature of rats have been measured at 0, 30, 60, 90 min after a 5, 10, 20g/Kg oral administration each of Coptidis Rizoma(Ranunculaceae, Coptis chinesis,
$F_{RANCH}$ ), Aconiti Lateralis Preparata Radix(Ranunculaceae, Aconitum carmichaeli$D_{EBX}$ ). From this study, we obtained as follows. 1. We can categorize the four Natures of drug according to yin(陰) - Cool and Cold Natures and yang(陽) - Warm and Hot Natures. 2. The relation between the four Natures of drug and the changes of body temperature can be studied as the considertion of the dosage and the preparation of crude medicines. 3. Herbs containing toxicant should be studied carefully without the side effects. -
There are many theory in acupuncture mechanism, so we must know the detail contents. and then we can use the acupuncture as we know. the follow article will be helpful in this part. 1. Spinal cord are role in intermediate part in somatosensorypathway also in acupuncture stumulating tract 2. Acute pain pathway started in laminae I, V of gray colmn, next are the spinothalamic tract(trigeminal spinothalamic tract in above neck part) and then go to the specific thalamic nucleus. but chronic pain in laminae II, III, VI, VII, next are spinoreticular tract(trigeminal spinoreticular tract in the neck part) and finally to the nonspecific thalamic nucleus. 3. Thalamus is very important area in somatosensory stimuation including acupuncture stumulating sensory also as a pain control center. but except this, there are Hypothalamus, Limbic system Cerebral cortex and Cerebellum as intermediator. as we Know hypothalamus is related to the emotional analgesic system with a limbic system. 4. A
${\delta$ fiber has relationship in Acute, sharp and initial pain, contrary this C fiber is related with Chronic, dull and last pain. 5. In Acupuncture mechanism of pain analgesia, there are two theory, one is gate control theory as large fiber another is stimuation produced analgesia as small diameter fier. 6. In DNIC, the stimulation sources are mechanical, thermal, heating, pain and acupuncture stimulation etc. we call these as a Heterotopic Noxious Stimulation. 7. In DNIC, SRD(Subnucleus reticularis dorsalis)is core nucleus in pain imtermediated analgesic mechanism. 8. Takeshige insisted nonacupuncture point dependent analgesic mechanism and acupuncture point dependent analgesic mechanism. and protested that Stimulation acupuncture piing evoke blocking nomacupuncture point analgesic pathway.
