An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of silver coating on the frictional behavior of SM45C steel at sliding surfaces. Pure silver was coated the SM45C disk surfaces by a thermal evaporation method. Experiments using a pin-on-disk test-rig was performed under dry air and various humidity conditions. Friction coefficients increased to a high and unstable value after failure of coating, and friction coefficients increased with increasing the thickness of silver coated layer. But optimum coating thickness was not observed.

In order to evaluate the effect of Nb on wear properties of high speed steel by powder metallurgy(PM-HSS), niobium-alloyed PM-HSS have been prepared by adding 0%, 1%, 3% and 5%Nb to PM-HSS of 6%W-5%Mo-4%Cr-5%V-5%Co presented in the previous paper. Sliding wear test have been conducted in various sliding speed conditions under the constant pressure using a pin-on-disc type machine. The results of this study shows that the wear resistance of PM-HSS has been increased by the addition of Nb in the range of experimental sliding speed. However, the amount of Nb shows to be unimportant parameter for the improvement of the wear resistance. It may be due to the thermal stability of carbide and high temperature properties of matrix by adding Nb comparing to the case of no addition.

The stress field in the body by tangential loading of a rectangular patch on a semi-infinite solid has been solved analytically using Boussinesque's potential function. Its validity was proved by saint-venant's principle in remote region of the and in the vicinity of the surface with superposition of point loads.

헤르츠 접촉하에 있는 반무한체에서의 표면균열을 살펴보았다. 시편의 응력확대계수 K를 구하기 위해 사용되는 간단화된 방법을 이 논문에 쓰여진 모델에 적용시켰다. 기존에 알려진 결과에 비해 상당히 만족스런 결과를 얻었으며 다른 방법보다 이 방법이 훨씬 더 편리함이 입증되었다.

Numerical methods are procured for evaluating the contact stresses, the dissipation of friction energy density and the fatigue cracking emanated from the contact surface under the partial slip condition. A rounded punch is used for the indenter pressing and slipping on the elastic half plane. Plane strain condition is assumed for the present analysis. Several sample calculations are carried out to investigate the effect of the punch roundness, the shear load path, and the crack obliquity and closure on the failure. It is found that the present methods can be a useful tool for studying the physical failure of the of the contacting materials such as fretting wear and fretting fatigue cracking.

In recent years, the micro-tribological behavior of silicon has been the topic of much interest. peformance of thin film under light load is important for potential applications in MEMS. In this work under light load and various humidity, the tribological behavior of undulated surface with various width and shape was Investigated. The results show that undulated surface of linear type had good tribological properties abrasive wear occur depending on the sliding condition. Also the effect of humidity on friction and wear was not important if exist undulation. Finally, undulations on HDD were found to be effective in trapping wear particles.

As the flying height decreased, it is essential that hard disk drives perform reliable under various environmental conditions. In this paper the tribological characteristics of a head/disk interface are investigated under various temperature, relative humidity, altitude and outgas conditions. Specially, Contact-Start-Stop(CSS) tests were performed to assess the stiction, acoustic emission, slider take-off behavior, and track average amplitude(TAA). It is shown that the surface damage and head failure are accelerated by high temperature and humidity as well as low ambient pressure.

반복 응력 상태 아래서 알루미나 세라믹의 피로 표면손상 누적현상이 분석되었다. 연속 미끄럼 접촉 시에 발생하는 응력 상태를 재현하기 위해서 동시에 작용하는 수직-수평 반복 압축하중 기법이 사용되었다. 알루미나 구와 평판의 접촉면에서 알루미나 미세 결정의 피로 파손에 의한 마모 입자 형성 기구가 관찰되었고, 반복하중의 횟수와 수직-수평 하중비가 커질수록 마모량은 증가하였다. 반복 접촉하중에 의한 표면손상 누적이 접촉 수직 변위 측정으로 정량화 되었다. 두 접촉 구조물의 강성 (하중-변위 선도의 기울기) 변화가 두 재질의 탄성계수의 변화로 표현되었다.

Scanning probe Microscope(SPM) such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope(STM) and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM) was shown to be the powerful tool for nano-scale characterization of material surfaces Using this technique, surface morphology of the cyclically deformed Cu or Cu-Al single crystal was observed. The surface became proportionately rough as the number of cycles increased, but after some number of cycles no further change was observed. Slip steps with the heights of 100 to 200 nm and the widths of 1000 to 2000 nm were prevailing at the stage. The slipped distance of one slip system at the surface was not uniform. and formation of the extrusions or intrusions was assumed to occur such place. By comparing the morphological change caused by crystallographic orientation, strain amplitude, number of cycles or stacking fault energy, some interesting results which help to clarify the basic mechanism of fatigue damage were obtained. Furthermore, applicability of the scanning tunneling microscopy to fatigue damage is discussed.

Finite element equations by using fast Fourier transformation were formulated for studying temperatures resulting from frictional heating in sliding systems. The equations include the effect of velocity of moving components. The program developed by using FFT-FEM that combines Fourier transform techniques and the finite element method, was applied to the sliding bearing system. Numerical prediction obtained by FFT-FEM was in an excellent agreement of experimental temperature measurements.

Residual stress in the forged products directly affects material stability, resistance to deformation, accuracy, and fatigue life of products. It is very important to study the residual stress distributions in forged products and to monitor operating conditions for the minimum tensile or maximum compressive residual stresses. As a way to study the residual stress formation due to radial forging, a three dimensional theoretical model was developed using ANSYS finite element program. Using the developed model, residual stress distributions in forged product were calculated and selected results were compared with the published experimental data to verify the effectiveness of the developed model.

Friction characteristics of automotive friction materials according to the types of phenolic resin were investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Four different simplified friction materials bound with Bakelite
$^{TM}$ and Xylok$^{TM}$ phenolic resin were studied in this work. Two different modes of drag test(constant initial temperature test and constant interval test) were employed to analyze the effects of the binders on friction characteristics. Friction materials containing modified Xylok$^{TM}$ resin showed good heat resistance and friction stability. The results also showed that aramid fiber played important roles in improving friction stability and weard wear -
This paper was undertaken to do morphological analysis of wear particles for sliding members hydrauric rotary acuator. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the wear test device and wear specimens of the pin on disk type was rubbed in paraffinic base oil by three kinds of lubricating materials, varying applied load, sliding distance. The four shape parameters (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) are used for morphological analysis of wear particles. The results showed that the four shape parameters of wear particles depend on a kind of the lubricating materials. It was capable of presuming wear volume for three kinds of materials on driving time.

In this paper, linearized dynamic characteristics of parallel line pivoted pad thrust bearing(hereinafter refer to PLP thrust bearing) was analyzed by perturbation method with inlet pressure. Inlet pressure and excitation frequency irfluence dynamic characteristics of PLP thrust bearing at all operating condition, such as angular pivot position, mass of pad. Therefore, the characteristics is have to analyzed with inlet pressure, excitation frequency, mass of pad and thickness of pad. Otherwise, the analysis is able to estimate the characteristics over or under.

The rolling fatigue lives (RFL) of five kinds of silicon nitride balls were investigated. Four kinds of Si
$_3$ N$_4$ balls were fabricated using different raw materials, sintering aids and sintering conditions, Commercially available Si3N4 ball was also studied for comparison. All the balls were finished up to the dimensional accuracy of Grade 10 defined in KS B 2001 (Steel Balls for Ball Bearings) with a size of 9.525mm. RFL tests were then conducted under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress 6.38 GPa and the spindle speed 10,000 rpm. Gear oil was provided by oiled race as lubricant. The results of RFL test indicated the prerequisitic conditions for the long rolling life of Si$_3$ N$_4$ ball : (1) the high density, (2) mjcrostructures consisted of small uniformly distributed grains, (3) little glassy phase in grainboundary, and (4) little crystalline phase and secondary phase that induces residual thermal stress due to the differences of thermal expansion coefficient with Si$_3$ N$_4$ Phase. -
The inlet pressure build-up at the leading edge of bearings which have discontinuous lubrication surface is analyzed theoretically. The analyses of Inlet pressure build-up is obtained by means of full Navier-stokes equations. Beam-warming method is used to solve navier-stokes equations. The results show that inlet pressure is above atmosphere pressure in front of leading edge of hearing.

It is possible for a volume of fluid to become trapped in the space between two adjoining teeth ad the tips of the teeth engage in Gear Pump with involute teeth. This trapped fluid leads to several harmful results, for example fluctuating pressure and aeration of pump. In this study, hence, theoretical and experimental analyses on this 'Trapping' were accomplished as using relief port(or escape port), one of the means for avoid it. Also, the grasp and analysis on variational type of the internal pressure in parallel with above experiments are achieved so that hydrodynamic behaviors in pump were contemplated.

An experimental investigation on the leakage characteristics of a labyrinth seal, high-low seal, is studied. Pressure distribution and leakage flow rate are measured along with the shaft speed and the pressure difference between the entrance and the exit. Pressure distribution vanes almost linearly along the seal and the leakage flow rate increases as the increase of the pressure difference. Furthermore, it is found that both the shaft speed and the shaft vibration have no influence on the leakage of the labyrinth seal.

The film thickness and shape of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is measured by optical interferometer, which is the most precise method for EHL film measurement. However the interpretation of the image pattern from optical viscometer is not easy for two-dimensional shape. A newly developed method of image processing makes it possible to evaluate the film thickness and shape in every point of contact region with two dimensional aspects. In this study, we captured film shape of EHL film from the monochromatic incident light with the Image processing method, which uses phase shift method, and obtained the image analysis method for gray level image in order to qualitatively evaluate film shapes.

new bearing concept, the wave journal bearing, has been developed to improve the static and dynamic performances of an air-lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearing. This concept features waves on bearing surface. In this study, we present the solution of the compressible Reynolds equation valid for arbitrary Knudsen numbers. Straight wave journal bearing is investigated numerically. The performances of straight wave bearing are compared to the plain journal bearing over relatively wide range of bearing number and eccentricity. The wave journal bearing offers better stability than the plain journal bearing under a13 bearing numbers covered in this study. The bearing load and stability characteristics are dependent on the geometric parameters such as the amplitude and the starting point of the wave relative to the applied load. Under the condition of Knudsen number)0.01, we can not ignore the effect of slip for journal bearing.

Herringbone groove journal bearing (HGJB) is developed to improve the static and dynamic performances of hydrodynamic journal bearing. Conventional studies on HGJB were based on the Narrow Groove theory assuming that the number of grooves approaches infinity. In this study, an oil lubricated HGJB is analyzed using Finite Element Method. Load carrying capacity, attitude angle, stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained numerically for various bearing configurations especially for the inclined width ratio and asymmetric ratio and compared with the results obtained using Finite Volume Method. The bearing load and stability characteristics are dependent on geometric parameters such as inclined width ratio, asymmetric ratio, groove depth ratio, groove width ratio, groove angle.

In order to analysis contact mechanism of head/ disk interface on hard disk drive, many techniques of analysis have been developed. Acoustic Emission sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of contact at head/disk interface. This work presents a good understanding of slider characteristics in frequency domain. The results show that torsional and bending mode of slider are dominant in head/disk contact.

The present work is an attempt to calculate the steady state pressure and perturbed pressure of journal bearings that has a helical groove. A coordinate is fitted to the helical groove and governing equation is derived by applying generalized coodinate system to the divergence formulation method. This method makes it possible to deal with an arbitrary configuration of a lubricated surface. The dynamical response of shaft-bearing system is calculated using the bearing reaction force and external force.

A theoretical study of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts with both rolling and spin has been carried out. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to solve the problem. The velocity vectors resulting from combined spin and rolling/sliding motion lead to asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes. Film contours and variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses are compared with various spin-roll ratios. At high spin-roll ratios the minimum film thickness is considerably reduced, whereas the central film thickness decreases less dramatically, The present numerical scheme can be used in the analysis of general elliptical contact problems.

The antiwear performance of several organic phosphates ,such as tricrecylphosphate(TCP), tributylphosphate(TBP), diphenylhydrogenphosphate(DPHP) ,dissolved in polyol ester based oils is studied. These organic phosphates are well known for antiwear additive for lubricating oil that produce reacted surface protective film. These antiwear additives can drastically reduce wear with their concentration increasing, because the amount of additive adsorbed on metal sur(ace increases. But in the higher concentration region, the wear is increased by excessive and corrosive reaction of the metal surface with these additives. That is to say, there is an optimum concentration for minimum wear. The optimum concentration was different with the kinds of base oils and additives. Different polyolesters showed different optimum concentrations of the additive. The order of optimum concentration among the polyolesters was different with different phosphates. The order of the optimum concentration is shown that the effect of the concentration of additives on the antiwear performance. It can be explained by the interaction between additives and base oils using the solubility parameter.

A mechanical face seal is a tribe-element intended to control the leakage of working fluid at the interface of a rotating shaft and its housing. The leakage of working fluid decreases as the seal surfaces get closer each other. But a very small seal clearance results in a drastic reduction of seal life because of high wear and heat generation. Therefore, in the design of mechanical face seals the compromise between low leakage and acceptable life is important and presents a difficult design problem. And the gap geometry of seal clearance affects seal performance very much and becomes an important design variable. In this study the Reynolds equation for the sealing dam of mechanical face seals is numerically analyzed using the Galerkin Finite Element Method, which can be readily applied to various seal geometries. The film pressures of the sealing dam are analyzed, including the effects of the seal face coning and tilt. Then, opening forces, restoring moments, leakages, and dynamic coefficients are calculated.

Friction and wear test have been performed on nylon, polyacetal, and PTFE(polytetrafluoroethylene), in reciprocating dry sliding conditions against a steel disc. According to the results, polyacetal show lowest wear rates and PTFE was found to exhibit lowest friction coefficient. The prominent wear mechanism found were adhesion and abrasion.

Dynamic pressure is one of the major sources on noise emission in hydraulic axial piston pump. This paper reports an experimental study of dynamic pressure characteristics in the cylinder port of hydraulic axial piston pump. We investigated dynamic pressure with not only the effect of delivery pressure, rotational speed and temperature but also V-notches at the ends of the kidney ports in the valve plate. We experimented three valve plates with three type V-notches at the ends of the kidney ports, because V-notches of the valve plate is known of noise reduction. Finally, we hope this paper help to design of the valve plate in hydraulic axial piston pump.

One of the innovative physical methods that provide insight into the basic processes which determine friction and wear behavior of coated machine tools is acoustic emission (AE). In this study, an investigation of the relation between AE and friction signal produced during repeated sliding test is presented. The material of test specimens is CrN coated 0.2% plain carbon steel with 1 Um thickness. The obtained results demonstrate that AE signal is very related with friction, and AE signal is more sensitive than friction when CrN coated film come off the substrate.

Sliding wear test was employed to determine the effect of whisker content and orientation on the firiction and wear behavior of SiC whisker reinforced alumina. Composites containing unidirectionally oriented whiskers were prepared by a modified tape casting followed by lamination, binder removal and hot pressing in order to align the whiskers in the tape casting direction. Wear coefficients on three directions were measured; parallel and normal to the tape casting direction on the tape casting surface and normal to lamination direction on surfnce normal to the tape casting direction. In the effect of whisker orientation, the highest wear rate was obtained in the direction parallel tape casting direction and the lowest in the direction normal to lamination direction at all temperatures. Silicon oxide layer amoothing the surface was detected by energy dispersive X-ray analysis on the worn surface.

Generally quantity of supply oil for piston ring lubrication in an internal combustion engine may be insufficient to fill the entire volume formed in the clearance between piston ring and cylinder liner. Thus oil starvation condition should be considered for the analysis of piston ring lubrication. In order to reasonably estimate amount of oil left on the cylinder liner, adequate boundary condition should be adapted for the analysis of ring pack lubrication. In this analysis of ring pack lubrication of an internal combustion engine, oil starvation and open-end boundary conditions are considered at inlet and outlet of piston rings. It is revealed that piston rings are operated under oil starvation in most operating cycle and the result with these conditions are quite different from that with fully-flooded assumption.

The effect of microstructure of gray cast iron disk was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Three different rotors with different microstructures were studied in this work. They showed a pearlitic matrix, a ferritic matrix, and a martensitic structure, respectively. All of them have graphite flakes in common. Drag tests at different pressure and speed conditions were carried out to study friction stability, temperature rise during drags. The rotor containing pearlitic matrix showed lower values of friction coefficient, small amount of temperature rise, and less fading. The results showed that gray cast iron disk containing pearlitic matrix has good friction characteristics.

The effect of manufacturing parameters such as molding and curing conditions on friction characteristics of friction materials were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. The optimal manufacturing rendition for the best friction characteristics were investigated using friction materials containing 15 ingredients employing Taguchi robust design experiment. The friction characteristics were strongly affected by pressing time, pressing temperature, pressing pressure, curing time, curing temperature.

Friction characteristics of automotive friction materials containing different metallic fibers rubbing against Al-MMC and cast iron disk specimens have been studied. Friction materials containing aluminum, copper or low steel carbon fiber were tested. Friction tests were composed of three different phases to investigate the effect of temperature, pressure, speed, and drag time. The results showed that the friction material containing Al fibers has lower friction force and wear amount than the others with Cu or Steel fiber. On the other hand, the wear of friction material was severe in the case of using Al-MMC rotors. These results showed that the thermal decomposition of solid lubricants (and organic components), formation of transfer layer, and SiC particles in the AI-MMC rotor play crucial roles in determining the friction characteristics.

The effects of solid lubricants on wear and friction characteristics of friction materials were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Friction materials with four different formulations containing different relative amounts of solid lubricants(graphite, MoS
$_2$ , and Sb$_2$ S$_3$ ) were investigated. Results of this work showed that each formulation with different lubricants had unique friction characteristics. Friction material containing rich MoS$_2$ showed excellent friction stability at different friction conditions. However friction material containing rich Sb$_2$ S$_3$ revealed high wear of friction materials. -
It is the effective method to diagnosis damage process of gear system such as automobile transmission to observe wear particle in gear oil. We tested with new transmission and took out gear oil according to drive distance. 4 shape parameters of wear particles in gear oil were calculated and wear volume were presumed with the image processing system. To be applied to damage diagnosis of gear system in transmission of automobile, we discuss number of wear particles, shape characteristics and total wear volume according to driving distance.

This paper presents a parametric study and an optimal design of the ER-SFD supporting a rigid rotor system. An attempt is made to obtain the optimal design of an ER-SFD for a two degree-of-freedom rotor model. Such a simple model is used in order to get a better insight into the physics of the problem, A maximum whirl amplitude, supply pressure and voltage are considered, and a maximum whirl amplitude is minimized over a range of speeds and presented for some values of unbalance mass. The results presented in this paper provide important design information necessary to reduce a whirl amplitude of an ER-SFD.

This paper describes that the leaf spring damper(LSD) developed by authors can be controled by side clearance between side cover and leaf spring. The test rig and two prototype dampers with different side clearance were manufactured. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of side clearance on the damping of leaf spring damper. The stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained from the displacements and the reaction forces generated by rotating the eccentric shaft. All dynamic coeffficients are plotted with the excitation frequency which is adjusted by rotating speed of shaft.

This study presents a method for determining stiffness and damping coefficients of 30% U slider-air bearings by using perturbation method, and shows that this method is more accurate than steady state method according to the comparison of those with the modal analysis method. Through a generalized lubrication equation, which based on linealized Boltzmann equation, the static and dynamic pressure distributions are calculated by finite volume method.

Finite element analysis is peformed about the crack propagation in half-space due to sliding contact. The analysis is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and stress intensity factor concept. The crack location is fixed and the friction coefficient between asperity and half-space is varied to analyze the effect of surface friction on stress Intensity factor for horizontal crack. The crack propagation direction is predicted based on the maximum range of shear and tensile stress intensity factor.

The fretting wear behaviour of Zircaloy-4 tube used as the fuel rod cladding in PWR nuclear power plants has been investigated at the different test environment, in light water and in air as a function of slip amplitude, normal load, test duration and frequency. Zircaloy-4 tubes were used for both of oscillating and stationary specimens. A fretting wear tester was designed to be suitable for this fretting test. The wear volume and specific wear rate of Zircaloy-4 tube in water were greater than those in air under various slip amplitude. It was found that delaminate debris and surface cracks were observed at low slip amplitude and high load in water Experimental results showed that the light water accelerated the wear of Zircaloy-4 tube at low slip amplitude in fretting.

The fretting wear characteristics of the contact between Zircaloy-4 tube and Inconel 600 tube have investigated. Zircaloy-4 is used for fuel rod in nuclear reactor and Inconel 600 is used for tube In steam generator of nuclear power plant. A fretting wear tester was designed to be suitable for this fretting test. In this study, the number of cycles, slip amplitude and normal load were selected as main factors of fretting wear. This study shows that the wear scar length of Zircaloy-4 and Inconel 600 increases as number of cycles, normal load and slip amplitude increase and the wear scar length of Zircaloy-4 is more longer than that of Inconel 600 due to the surface hardness.

The present work is an attempt to calculate the steady state pressure and perturbed pressure of herringbone grooved journal bearings. A generalized coordinate system is introduced to handle the complex bearing geometry. The coordinates are fitted to the groove boundary and the Reynold's equation is transformed to be fitted to this coordinates system using the Gauss divergence theorem. This method makes it possible to deal with an arbitrary configuration of a lubricated surface. The characteristics of finite herringbone grooved journal are well calculated using this method.

The dynamic behavior analysis of air-lubricated tilting pad journal bearing which considers start-up, running and shutdown Process were performed. By carrying out the experiment of shaft vibration, measurement of the vibration amplitudes supported by air lubricated tilting pad bearing and analysis of the result, we found more accurate dynamic behavior of the system. There were many investigations in these bearings, but dynamic behavior of startup, shutdown and running process were lacked. By using the experimental data we found the accurate dynamic behavior of the system.

A coupled thermal-mechanical analysis has been presented for the thermal distortions of the ventilated disk brakes during IS braking operations. The FEM results show that the bendings and distortions of the disk toward the left side are decreased, but the sinusoidal distortion of the disk rubbing surface along the arc length of the vent hole is highly increased by increasing the convective air cooling effects, which is heavily related to the squeal, wear and micro-thermal crackings at the rubbing surfaces due to uneven dissipation rates of friction heatings.

In this paper, the hardness and wear characteristics of the head hardened rail, which is made by thermite and gas pressure weldings have been presented. In general, the wear rate of the gas pressure welded rail is high and uniform compared with that of thermite welded rail. The results indicate that HH 370 welded rail shows stable in hardness and low wear rate compared with other two welded rails. The hardness of head hardened rails shows uniformly distributed along the welded zone, thermally affected zone and a base matrix.

This paper presents friction and wear related results of thermite and gas pressure welded rails under various environmental contact conditions. A welded rail which is manufactured by thermite welding and gas pressure one has been tested rail full range of test conditions in a pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rates of a welded rail are heavily dependent on the contact pressures and sliding environments for two welding methods such as thermite and gas pressure weldings.

We have evaluated the performance and some physical properties of 25 automotive engine oils (21 domestic and 5 imported products) which are purchased on the market to verify the API(American Petroleum Institute) or ILSAC(International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee) certification marks attached on the products and to determine the necessity of the quality control of the engine oils on the market. 12 test items are chosen according to API engine oil specification, which are flash point, pour point, cold cranking simulator apparent viscosity, pumping viscosity, gelation index, HTHS(High Temperature High Shear viscosity), foam, high temperature foam, filterability, volatility, high temperature deposit(TEOST), phosphorus content. We have found one product which did not meet the API specification on gelation index, one on HTHS, four on foam, and one on volatility, which implies that the quality control system is in need to check the fidelity of the certification marks attached on the engine oils being marketed. In addition, this works raises the necessity of the upgrade of the present Korean engine oil specification.
