The industrial revolution in England was based on the manufacturing systems by the power of water mill and rapidly progressed by the innovation of steam engine. It is no exaggeration to say that today's civilization is realized by the development of various types of power machinery, namely fluid machinery and heat engine. The electric energy is converted mainly from thermal energy (mainly steam) of mineral oil, coal and nuclear fuel through generator connected with steam turbine which is a kind of power machinery. There are various types of power machinery as shown in Tables 1a and 1b. They are classified into two types by use. One is absorption type of fluid and/or thermal energy, for examples, windmill and heat engine. The other is provision type of the energies for examples, pump, compressor and propulsion. By flow type, they are also classified by two types, turbo type and positive-displacement type. The turbo type began from water mill and windmill and evolve to steam turbine and finally to gas turbine. The positive-displacement type started from reciprocating water pump and developed into steam engine and changed to reciprocating combustion engine. The pumps and motors used in oil hydraulic system for power control are also positive-displacement type.

Condition monitoring technique used in the military is JOAP, for which the spectroscopic analysis is applied. However it is known that the technique has some problems in economical and practical point of view. This study introduces a new technique for measuring wear in real time base and applies the technique to a high power semi-automatic transmission. The results show the feasibility by measuring the concentration of ferrous wear particles from the transmission oil.

Plasma-sprayed coatings were obtained by spray-dried $Cr_2O_3$ powder with and without Mo addition. A reciprocal type tribo-tester was employed to examine friction and wear behavior of the specimens at room temperature. The composition and the worn surface of coated specimens were observed by XRD and SEM. The results showed that friction Coefficient of the Mo added specimens were lower than one of $Cr_2O_3$ specimen. But $Cr_2O_3$ specimen had a lower wear loss. Protecting layer were observed at the worn surface of coated specimens with Mo addition.

Sliding wear test and surface characterization techniques such as micro-Raman spectroscopy were employed to determine the effect of whisker content and orientation on the friction and wear behavior of SiC whisker reinforced alumina. Composites containing unidirectionally oriented whiskers were fabricated by novel technique Addition of SiC whiskers up to 20 vol.% lowered the friction and improved wear resistance. The results of this study indicated that highly disordered graphite and size of the layer behind the whiskers were responsible for variation of wear rate and friction coefficient.

It is well known that reduction of friction loss due to the valve train system greatly affects on improvement of fuel economy in internal combustion engine. In order to investigate friction characteristics of valve train system we carried out friction force measurement using test rig developed by ourselves. From test results, we concluded that characteristics of lubrication and friction torque on the valve train system such as mixed and hydrodynamic was mainly governed the contact type between cam and tappet.

To apply the high chromium white cast irons for sliding parts of construction equipments, the wear characteristics of these alloys which have three kinds of microstructure(hypoeutectic, near-eutectic, hypereutectic) were investigated by dry sand/rubber wheel tester. Also, the effect of heat treatment was investigated for the same alloys. As result of the test, heat treatment have no effect on the wear characteristics. And, hypereutectic composition alloy has the highest wear resistance against SiO$_2$. Also after test, cracking was observed in eutectic and primary carbides of all materials tested. This phenomenon was important factor in the wear resistance.

An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of adsorbed moisture on the rolling resistance behavior of pure silver coated 52100 bearing steel. Plasma surface modifications were performed on the silver coated specimen to change the wetting characteristics. Experiments using a thrust ball beating-typed roiling test-rig were performed under vacuum, dry air and various tmmidity conditions. Results showed that the changes in the wetting characteristics influenced remarkably on the silver particle agglomeration and resulted in the different behavior of rolling resistance with humidity.

This paper presents friction and wear related results of thermite and gas pressure welded rails under various environmental contact conditions. A welded rail which is fabricated by thermite welding and gas pressure one has been tested over full range of test conditions in a pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rates of a welded rail are heavily dependent on the contact pressures and sliding environments for two welding methods such as thermite and gas pressure weldings.

Two kinds of polished and unpolished freestanding films prepared by DC plasma CVD method were impacted by SiC particles to understand erosion mechanism. Erosion damage caused by solid impact was characterized by surface profilometer, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Gradually decrease of surface roughness and sharp reduction of crystallinity for unpolished CVD films were observed with increasing erosion time. It was found that smaller grains of the diamond were removed in early stage of erosion process and larger grains were eroded with further impingement. By introduction of re-growth method on polished diamond, further understanding of erosion mechanism was achieved. Most of the surface fractures were initiated at the grain boundary.

It is very important to evaluate the friction force of valve train system in the aspect of reducing friction loss of engine. To this end, we have developed measuring system of friction force of engine valve train system. There were two major factors in the process of development of it. One was it had to accurately measure the friction force up to 3500 Crpm without any problems such as mechanical vibration, electrical noise and so on. The other was it also had to simulate real engine conditions such as Crpm, oil temperature, oil pressure and oil aeration including effect of belt drive system. In this paper we have introduced the process of development of it based on test results, and also analysis process of measured data.

Machines that normally operate under fluid film lubricated condition also experience surface damage. This is largely due to the failure of the lubricant film which leads to boundary lubrication. Thus, it is important to have a good understanding of boundary lubrication behavior. In this paper the major tribological parameters that influence the boundary lubrication properties are evaluated. It is shown that disk roughness, hardness and normal load affect the friction and wear of metals in boundary lubrication. Also, the mechanism of surface damage is attributed to abrasion and wear particle interaction.

A correlation between the low-cycle fatigue life and the scuffing-failure life is demonstrated using the plastic strain in boundary lubricated sliding. Loadings proportional to hardness with three different lubricated conditions were used to evaluate the plastic strain. As the results of scuffing tests using vacuum pump oils in nitrogen gas, plastic strain shows 0.0062, and In the mineral oils and commercial engine oils in air, plastic strain show 0.0042 and 0.00092. Those are very useful to describe quantitatively the real lubricated sliding conditions, and are very effective to find the relation between the low-cycle fatigue life and the scuffing life.

초고분자량 폴리에틸렌(Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)은 인공관절 라이너에 쓰이는 대표적 생체재료이다. 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 변형과 마모에 영향을 주는 인자에 대한 기본적 연구를 위하여 본 연구에서는 미세구조 결정상의 정도와 결정구조 방향성에 따른 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 크리프 변형 및 마모 특성의 연구를 행하였다. 압출 제작된 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌 봉(extruded UHMWPE rod)단면의 중앙(center) 부분과 원주(periphery)부분으로부터 각각 직사각형 및 원통형의 시편을 제작하여 크리프 실험과 마모 실험을 실시하였다. 원주 시편의 크리프 변형율은 중앙 시편의 크리프 변형율보다 11% 크며 (p<0.05), 마모양도 원주 시편이 중앙 시편보다 두 배나 큰 것으로(p<0.05)관측되었다. 이 결과들로부터 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 크리프 변형과 마모가 미세 결정구조 방향성에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.

Tribological investigation of ultra thin film magnetic storage disks which have two different kinds of start/stop zone of laser textured bump disk and mechanically textured disk for before CSS test and after CSS test. To measure surface roughness, height reduction before/after CSS test and obtain accurate topographies, AFM(Atomic Force Microscope) which is most powerful recently has been used. The result of statistical analysis showed that both laser textured bump height and mechanically textured zone height have been reduced about 4~7nm after 15000 cycle CSS test. Using commercial Nano-Indenter, ramping load scratch test has been performed to investigate friction characteristic for laser textured zone and mechanically textured zone before/after CSS test.

The morphological analysis of wear particle is a very effective means for machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. In order to describe morphology of various wear particle, the wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions. And fractal descriptors was applied to boundary and surface of wear particle with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze shape and surface wear particle are shape fractal dimension and surface fractal dimension. The shape fractal dimension can be derived from the boundary profile and surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. The morphology of wear particles can be effectively obtained by two fractal dimensions.

The wear characteristics and wear mechanisms of dental composite resins were investigated. Composite resins such as Metalii, Silux Plus, Heliomolar and Palfique Estelite were selected as specimens and contents of filler in specimens in order to analyze the effect of Prepolymerized Particle Fillers in friction and wear characteristics. Ball on flat wear tester was used for a wear test. Friction and wear tests are carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of Metafil was quite high relatively, and the wear resistance of Silux Plus and Palfique Estelite was better than that of Metafil and Hellomolar at the same experimental condition. The main wear mechanism is plastic flow and abrasive wear by crack propagation.

It is essential that hard disk drives perform reliable under various temperature, humidity, and ambient pressure conditions. In this paper the tribological characteristics of a head/disk interface are investigated under various environmental conditions. Specially, Contact-Start-Stop(CSS) tests were performed to assess the stiction and slider take-off behavior. It is shown that the surface damage is accelerated by high temperature and humidity as well as low ambient pressure.

Applying design methodology, new type friction tester has been developed. Functional analysis has been executed and functional structure were constructed during the conceptual design. Optimal solution has been selected and a proto model has been manufactured according to the conceptual design. Using the proto model, experiments have been carried out and the test results were proved to be satisfied and reliable.

Using a test apparatus developed Lrt the laboratory, frictional characteristics of natural rubbers have been analyzed by experimental study. Friction coefficient has been calculated from the measured normal force and friction force under various speeds, loads, and temperatures. The relations between the various operating conditions and friction coefficients have been verified. Especially, drag friction due to the visco-elastic behavior of the rubber has been observed in this analysis.

디젤 엔진의 푸쉬로드 타입의 밸브 트레인에서의 힘의 전달 과정을 기구학적 응용을 통하여 구하였다. 이러한 힘의 최종 전달 단계인 캠과 평판 종동물의 접촉에서의 작용하중과 상대 운동 속도를 계산하였고 접촉면에서의 유막 두께를 고체면의 탄성변형을 고려하여 계산하였다. 특히 탄성 유체 윤활의 해석을 하는데 있어서 안정성과 수렴성이 우수한 멀티그리드 멀티레벨 기법을 사용하였으며 동하중 상태를 고려하여 유막 두께를 계산하고 기존의 정상상태의 해석해와 비교하였다.

A theoretical analysis has been undertaken to show the influence of bearing geometry on the steady state characteristics of air lubricated spherical tilting pad bearings. The geometry variations considered are the number of pads, the eccentricity ratio, the direction of load, and the preloading.

The distribution of oil film thickness in piston were measured by induced fluorescence method. A Xe lamp was used as light source. Coumarine-6 was mixed with oil as the fluorescent dye. Fluorescent signal which is proportional to the oil film thickness was acquired by CCD camera and transmitted to the personal computer as video signal. In order to solve the problem of measurement system, irregular distribution and unstability of light intensity, as well as to know the relationship between the oil film thickness and output signal, three different calibration techniques were used. Motoring and firing tests were performed in a single cylinder research engine with transparent liner. By analyzing the oil film thickness converted from the photographed image, it was observed that each of three piston rings scrapes the oil both upward and downward and oil film thickness is not uniform horizontally at a given piston land. The amount of oil in each land was considerably affected by the engine load. It is thought that the blow-by gas blows the oil down to the crankcase.

This paper describes evaluation of oxidation stability for diesel engine oils by Hot-tube oxidation tester at high temperature. Evaluation was rated by visual inspection of lacquer in capillary glass tube and TAN determination of used oil. Air, NO$_2$-air and SO$_2$-air mixed gases were used as oxidizing gas. One oil which has low oxidation stability is selected and reformulated by addition of some additives such as antioxidant, detergent and disperant to improve oxidation stability. As a results of reformulation, antioxidant and detergent was effective for improvement of high temperture oxidation stability on diesel engine oil.

In order to investigate the effect of base oil composition on the electronic insulating oil's performances, an experimental study has been conducted using different oils. Owing to their properties, like lower pour point and gas absorbing, naphthenic base oils are used more often than paraffmic base oils for the electronic insulating oil application. Naphthenic and paraffinic base oils are significantly different in their aromatic hydrocarbon content. In this paper, PXE(para xylyl ethane), LAB(linear alkylbenzene), C13 aromatic hydrocarbon mixture and C17 aromatic hydrocarbon mixture are investigated regarding their influence on insulating oil's performances. According to present study, breakdown voltage decreased with increasing aromatic lydrocarbon content in a deep dewaxed paraffmic base oil. However, any changing in the dissipation factor was not recognizable at small treated level. Furthermore, the volume resistance was not influenced by aromatic hydrocarbon content. The gassing tendency was found as a highly sensible property, changing with treating aromatic hydrocarbons. The higher benzene ring content in the hydrocarbon, the better gassing tendency.

This paper reports on the theoretical and expetimental study of the vane and cam ring motions in a variable displacement vane pump which is already used widely in various industrial and automotive applications. Dynamic equations of vane and cam ring motion and flow continuity equations are derived and then solved simultaneously using the numerical method. Vane detachment cause the pressure tipples, noise, wear in cam ring, and decrease the volumetric efficiency. Consequently, Vane detachment occurs due to excess compression in the pumping chamber, and it can be reduced by adjustment of design parmeters.

Because the journal and bearing surface are fully separated by the oil film during the normal operation, fluid film bearings operating in the hydrodynamic lubrication region are expected to have an infinite life. However, there are many parameters that lead to interfere with the normal operation of the bearing and lead to its failure. In this paper, both the causes and countermeasures of the bearing failure are described. Also, the characteristics of wiped bearing surface are investigated through mechanical and chemical test.

ER clutch is a device using electro-rheological fluid which is one of so called intelligent materials. Power transmission behavior of an ER clutch can be controlled by electrical field applied tb the fluid. In this work, a new type of servomechanism is developed with two ER clutchs, driven by two electrical motors rotating in reverse directions. The concentric cylinder type ER clutch is operated by PID control. The system shows good angular position control characteristics with respect to sinusoidal and square inputs.

This paper presents a study of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts where lubricant entrainment coincides with the major axis of the Hertzian contact ellipse. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to analyze the problem. Film contours and pressure distributions are compared with the results for lubricant entrainment coincides with the minor axis. Variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses with the radius ratio are also examined. Therefore, the present numerical scheme can be used generally in the analysis of the EHL of elliptical contacts where the lubricant entraining vector did not coincide with either of the principal axis of the conjunction.

The processing conditions for the mass production of platelet WS$_2$ lubricant powder were optimized. The mixture of tungsten and sulfur powders was sealed in a vacuum of 10$^{-3}$ torr and heat-treated at 850$\circ$C for 2 h. The internal pressure of reaction chamber was maintained at certain level by controlling the release valve automatically. The reaction product was the platelet WS$_2$ powder with an average size of 15 $\mu$m. The synthesized WS$_2$ powder was then coated on the wiper-blade of automobiles and the commercial deep-grooved ball bearing using wet and dry coating methods, respectively. High lubricity and wear resistance of wet coated wiper-blade were confirmed by the life test of 70,000 cycles. The life-time of the ball bearing assembled after WS$_2$ coating onto each part increased 50 times compared to the non-coated ball bearing.

인공관절 라이너에 널리 사용되는 대표적 생체재료인 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌 (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)은 체내에 삽입되기 전에 멸균처리를 거쳐야 하며, 가장 보편적인 멸균 방법은 감마선을 이용한 멸균처리이다. 그러나, 감마선은 폴리에틸렌의 화학분자 결합구조에 변화를 일으키며, 따라서 물리적, 기계적 물성치에 변화를 야기 사려된다. 이는 인공관절 수명을 좌우하는 변형과 마모현상에도 결정적 영향을 줄 것으로 사려된다. 본 연구에서는 감마선 멸균처리가 UHMWPE의 크리프 변형 및 마모에 미치는 영향이 관찰되었고, 그 결과들은 감마선 멸균처리로 야기된 폴리에틸렌의 화학분자 결합구조의 변화(Crystallinity, Oxidation, Crosslinking)와 함께 분석되었다. 압출 제작된 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌 봉(extruded UHMWPE rod)으로부터 원통형의 시편을 제작하여 감마선 멸균처리를 행하고, 압축 크리프 실험과 마모 실험을 실시하여 멸균처리 하지 않은 시편의 결과와 비교하였다. 크리프 변형의 경우, 감마선 멸균처리 된 시편과 멸균처리 하지 않는 시편 사이에는 크리프 복원정도를 제외하고 거의 차이가 없었으나, 반면에 마모의 경우, 감마선 멸균처리 된 시편이 멸균처리 하지 않은 시편보다 훨씬 적은 마모량을 보였다 (p<0.05). 이것은 crosslinking 증가에 따른 마모 저항력 향상으로 볼 수 있다.

In this paper, thermite and gas pressure weldings have been used to join rails in-track and analyzed as functions of hardness and wear characteristics. The wear rate of thermite welded rail is low compared with that of gas pressure welded rail, which is tested in a pin-on-disk wear tester. The hardness of thermite welded materials is relatively high and narrow distributed between three zones, welded part, thermally affected zone, and a base matrix. Wear of a welded rail may be a major factor in railroad maintenance costs and failures at the rail-rail butt joint.

This paper presents case studies on the oil related failures in automotive engines. In this study, engine oils play an important roles as a friction reducing matehals and should be supplied to a tribological machine elements sufficiently. The starvation or depletion of a lubricant may seriously produce the tribological failures on the rubbing parts of the engine.

레이저 프린터에 사용되는 스케너 모터의 안정적인 베어링을 개발하기 위해서 함유소결 베어링과 빗살무늬 유체베어링을 개발하였다. 함유소결베어링은 9,000~20,000 rpm까지에서 매우 우수한 마찰 및 접촉특성을 나타내었으며, 빗살무늬 유체베어링에서는 35,000rpm까지 우수한 특성을 나타내었다.

Three kinds of reation-bonded SiC that reaction-bonded SiC(RBSC), RBSC reinforced by carbon fiber and RBSC reinforced by activated carbon fiber were prepared for investigating the change of erosion properties. The characteristics of microstructures and the phases have been investigated by using scanning electron microscope and XRD analysis. The hardness test, toughness test and erosion test were camed out. In the cases with no carbon fiber, those kind of specimens had the highest result of hardness test and the lowest result of toughness test. With the increase of carbon fiber content, The hardness and the weight loss were decreased but the toughness was increased in the cases with carbon fiber In the cases with activated carbon fiber those specimens had the highest result of toughness test and the lowest result of hardness test with 30% contents of activated carbon fiber.

High temperature wear behavior of plasma sprayed zirconia based coating sealing with zirconia sol were investigated for high temperature wear resistance application. The zirconia powders containing 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 mol% of MoS$_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ for plasma spray were made by spray drying method. As-sprayed coating was sealed by zirconia-sol to fill up the pore and crack in coating. wear test were performed at temperature ranges from room temperature to 600$\circ$C. The microstructural changes of before and after sealing process were examined by SEM, XRD and EPMA. After sealing process, the porosity was decreased and micro-hardness was increased. The wear properties of coating after sealing process were improved by sealing of pores and cracks. The behavior of wear amount and coefficient of friction were same tendency to before sealing process.

Chemical-Mechanical Polishing (CMP) refers to a material removal process done by rubbing a work piece against a polishing pad under load in the presence of chemically active, abrasive containing slurry. CMP process is a combination of chemical dissolution and mechanical action. The mechanical action of CMP involves tribology. The liquid slurry is trapped between the wafer(work piece) and pad(tooling) forming a lubricating film. For the first step to understand material removal rate of the CMP process, the lubricational analyses were done with commercial 100mm diameter silicon wafers to get nominal clearance of the slurry film, roll and pitch angle at the steady state. For this purpose, we calculate slurry pressure, resultant forces and moments at the steady state in the range of typical industrial polishing conditions.

In order to measure the real contact force between head and disk on hard disk drive quantitatively, many technique of measurement have been developed. Acoustic Emission Sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of head/disk contact as arms value. In this study using pencil breaking test is proposed for finding contact force using transfer function between calibrated force and real contact force. And real AE data of subambient and tripad slider shows bending and torsional mode and their energy are dominant in hard disk and head contact.

A hydraulic pin-on-disk type tribotester was developed and it's performance was investigated experimentally. The estimate of the performance was accomplished by comparing those of the pneumatic and the dead-weight loading method. The reliability to the performance was conformed. By hydraulic loading method more accra'ate friction coefficient could be got.

The effect of characteristic of surface roughness on friction and sliding wear was studied experimentally with ball-on-disk type wear tester. The test was conducted with specimens those have varying arithmetic mean value, skewness and kurtosis under the condition of different load, sliding speed and lubricant viscosity. The surface of the lower skewness in negative value or the highel kurtosis tends to have low friction for the same arithmetic mean value. There is optimum arithmetic mean value surface roughness for operating variables have load, speed, etc.

A method of calculating wear amount which is based on digitally measured surface profile was suggested. The original profile of worn out profile was estimated from its adjacent surface profile by using least squares curve fitting with Fourier series. The approximated curve was well fitted to original surface profile. With this approach, more accurate calculation of the wear amount will be possible.

This paper describes syntheses of thickener for di-urea grease using constant velocity joint. The thickeners of di-urea grease were synthesized by reaction of diisocyanate with various alkylamines, hexylamine, octylamine, stearylamine and cyclohexylamine at high temperatxire. The synthesized thickener were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy and two kinds of Mass spectroscopy (EI & FAB). Dropping point and Consistency of synthesized di-urea grease were determined.

Tappet has wear problems like scuffing or pitting because of high Hertzian contact stress by line contact type between cam and tappet. To overcome this wear problems, we developed the high wear resistant tappet. Developed tappet consists of WC base alloyed tip and steel body. These two parts were directly bonded each other at high temperature under vacuum condition. To estimate the wear resistance of tungsten carbide tappet, we perform the scuffing test and engine dynamo test. As the result, tungsten carbide tappet has better wear resistance than conventionally chilled iron tappet.

The effect of humidity on friction characteristics of friction materials were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Three different friction materials containing simplified ingredients were investigated by changing the solid lubricant, graphite, MoS$_2$, and $Sb_2S_3$. A friction material without solid lubricant was also examined to study the effect of ingredients in the matrix on humidity. Friction material containing graphite showed lower friction coefficient at high humidity level than other conditions, however, friction material containing MoS$_2$ indicated higher friction coefficient at initial stage under high humidity level. Friction materials without solid lubricant and with $Sb_2S_3$ were little affected by humidity conditions.

The friction and wear characteristics of automotive friction materials reinforced with carbon fibers were studied using a direct drive brake dynamometer. Two types of model friction materials, a low-metallic and an NAO type, were prepared and each of the materials was modified by substituting 5 vol% of carbon fibers with other reinforcing fiber used in the model formulations. Drag tests were carried out to investigate the friction properties of these materials at various braking conditions. Results showed that the modified friction materials were improved in the friction stability and the wear resistance.

임계온도가 액체질소의 비등점(77K)보다 높은 산화물 고온 초전도체가 발견된 이후 초전도체를 여러분야에 응용하고자 하는 연구가 있어왔다. 이러한 연구중 초전도체의 자기부상특성을 이용한 마그네틱 베어링에 관한 연구가 시작되었다. 특히 최근에 임계전류밀도가 높은 덩어리형 고온 초전도체가 개발되어, 큰 부하지지력을 갖고 마찰계수가 작은 초전도 마그네틱 베어링이 가능하게 되었다. 고온 초전도체를 사용한 반발식 수동형 마그네틱 베어링은 마이스너 효과(Meissner effect)뿐 아니라 자속고정효과(Flux pinning effect)에 의해 자체적으로 외란에 대한 위치안정성을 가지며, 히스테리시스 손실에 의한 에너지 소산을 통해 외란에 대해 강한 감쇠능력을 가진다는 장점을 가지고 있으며, 대중량을 지지할 수 있다. 이러한 초전도체의 특성에 관한 정량적 수치해석은 초전도 베어링의 설계에 필수적이나 아직 국내에서는 그러한 시도가 없었다. 이러한 여건을 고려하여 본 연구에서는 Bulk형 초전도체와 자석간의 부상력 변화를 축대칭 모델로 수치해석하여 기존의 실험들과 정량적인 비교를 하여 수치해석 코드의 신뢰성을 확보하고 이를 기반으로 다양한 상황을 예측할 수 있음을 보이고자 한다.

A modeling of machined geometry and cutting force was proposed for the case of round shape machining, and the effects of internally machined profile are analyzed and its realiability was verified by the experiments of roundness tester, especially in boring operation in lathe. Also, harmonic cutting force model was proposed with the parameter of specific cutting force, chip width and chip thickness, and in this study, we can see that bored workpiece profile was also mapped into cutting force signal with this model. In general, we can calculated the theoretical lobe profile with arbitrary multilobe. But in real experiments, the most frequently measured numbers are 3 and 5 lobe profile in experiments. With this results, we can predict that these results may be applied to round shape machining such as drilling, boring, ball screw and internal grinding operation with the same method.

Slot restrictor air journal bearing has high load capacitance and high stiffness. Stability characteristics of slot restrictor air journal bearing are studied theoretically to forecast and to prevent the whirl instability. As for the high speed rotating machinery, the instability called 'whirl' occurs when the rotor rotates at a speed more than twice the resonant speed. Once the whirl occurs, rubbing contact between the journal and the bearing occurs mostly and the bearing-rotor system is destroyed ultimately. Therefore, the forecasting and prevention of the occurence of whirl instability is a very important subject especially to develop highly efficient high speed machinery. The bearing with the slot restrictor that varies about circumferencial direction is used for the purpose of the prevention of whirl instability.

Lubricational characteristics at the interface between the piston ring and the cylinder liner are considered in this paper. To verify that surface shape and operating conditions of the engine can affect the state of lubrication, the changes of the minimum film thickness and friction force are calculated with various conditions. Oil starvation and open-end boundary condition are used to determine computational boundaries as reported on previous paper for lubrication analysis for the piston ring. From this analysis, it can be found that lubricational characteristics are seriously affected by degree of oil starvation, surface shape and operating conditions.

This paper reports on the measurement of the vane motion in a positive displacement small vane pump. The capacitive method using ceramic vane is proposed to measure the vane motion. This method enables us to measure only radial motion of the vane regardless of the motions of other directions. With simple experiments and solutions of simultaneous equations, the indirect compensation of measured signal was performed.
