The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors negatively affecting college life, to investigate the perception gap between housing types, and to generate preliminary data for increasing residential satisfaction of students who live in temporary housing(e.g., dormitory or one-room). The utilized research methods included a questionnaire survey and an in-depth interview. The college students, especially from other regions, experienced more financial difficulties than others. They managed their tuition and living expense/allowance by parents supports and other sources(e.g., scholarship, arbeit, work in college, loan etc.). The reasons to choose dormitory, as temporary housing, were short distance to college and low costs. In case of one room, independent life was main reason to choose. Gender differences affected to the decision, moving away from present temporary housing. For example, male students preferred an independent life and a short commuting distance, while female students preferred an independent life and a safe life. Thus, considering the origin and gender differences of residents, dormitory planning needed to develop plans allowing independent life and to choose appropriate site for the purpose. In case of planning one room apartment, concerns for safety and landscape were more important than other factors.

Due to urbanization and industrialization, the population of rural areas has sharply decreased, and the social phenomena of low fertility and aging have occurred due to many factors such as the spread of individualism and single-person households derived from urbanization and economic growth. In order to cope with the low birth rate and the aged society, the Korean government has invested 152.1 trillion won from 2006 to 2015 and to proceeded total 231 projects in 3 different areas including the low fertility(95 projects), the aged society(78 projects), and the growth momentum(58 projects). Among the social problems caused by the low birth rate and the aged society, there have been not enough studies on the closed schools which will result from the social phenomenon of decreases in the school age population. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current extent of utilizing closed schools in Korea, to derive some types based on the analysis, and to provide basic data on the use of closed schools in Korea in the future. The types of closed schools can be classified into education facilities, social welfare facilities, cultural facilities, public sports facilities, income growing facilities, and others. Based on the classification, the analyses of the characteristics of each type for the facilities are presented.

This study explores the education of historic preservation in the United States. The research examined its history and philosophical and practical approaches within the American urban context, from its historical backgrounds to evolving social perspectives. This case study is to help collegiate educators in understanding the principles of American architectural heritage conservation and why it has been developed in specific directions and, ultimately, to assist in designing preservation education programs for different local contexts. Historic preservation in the United States has been integrated into the architecture and urban planning field as a sustainable development approach incorporating physical, social, and economic matters. First, this study explored the development of the preservation profession, policies, and education since the 1930s. Second, the researchers investigated the three fundamentals of historic preservation, such as authenticity, documentation, and community engagement. Lastly, this research discussed that American preservation deals with living communities and seeks interdisciplinary approaches. The understanding of historic preservation pedagogy from these multiple perspectives would hopefully provide a guide to developing cultural heritage education programs.

The need for communication is emphasized in decision making, design methods and processes for the educational environment that contain new curricula and learning methods. In this study, we tried to find the direction and agenda of learner-centered environment restructuring through the 'user-integrated platform' in which various subjects related to school space environment understand each other's position and overcome the barriers and prejudices of each sector. The project was planned in a 'bottom-up process' method that uncovered the singularities of the previous stage and led the main contents of the next stage. The various subjects who participated in the project shared their own experiences and different positions regarding the school space. At the workshop, the topics of the participating teams were divided into two categories. The teams in the category of the 'school culture and space' insisted innovation of 'the school culture' as a premise for the restructuring of the 'school space', and proposed schools with different interpretations of 'authority and rules of school', 'the meaning of learning and play' and 'the main character of school. The teams in the category of the 'school borders and spaces' focused on 'communication' and proposed schools containing 'emotional care of students', 'borders between schools and villages', 'village community schools', and 'interspace and niche time'. After the workshop, we were able to derive the direction and architectural strategy of the school space restructuring by analyzing the works of the participants. Through this study, we confirmed the possibility of translating user's ideas into the professional domain through careful planning, preparation, facilitation, and analysis in Participatory Design.

Recently, the role of community in public design has become important. However, the design process often places only emphasis on the 'agreement' of the community. As a result, the process was forced to collect opinions from the community only passively. Also, a process that only focuses on the formation of an agreement is likely to provoke confrontations and conflicts between those who support and oppose it. In the end, persuasion by the opposing residents is more important than decision-making by the whole community. Therefore, it has recently been paying attention to 'decision-making' that values a variety of things, not 'agreement formation'. Because various values of the community are valued and process is more important than result, 'decision-making' is different from 'agreement formation'. South Korea is also paying attention to public design, where community decision-making is central. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop a methodology that can support community decision making. In Jeju, the community's decision-making support methodology was devised for urban regeneration. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of this methodology and to reveal its potential and challenge as a decision-supporting methodology.

This research aims analyze the current situation and problems of cultural heritage education, and propose the methodology of cultural heritage education and the model of the curriculum for each education subject. This study consists of three parts. First, the current status of education related to cultural heritage was examined separately by general public, university and graduate students, and practitioners. Second, we reviewed the National Competency Standard(NCS) and the UNESCO World Heritage Competency Framework(CF) as a way to solve the problem of cultural heritage education for each education subject. By examining the methodology and curriculum model of cultural heritage education, we tried to find the future direction of cultural heritage education. Third, the education model of the cultural heritage curriculum for each educational subject was proposed by reflecting the direction and the cyclical education model of sustainable cultural heritage education. In future studies, we intend to use the education model presented in this study to specifically propose basic guidelines for the cultural heritage convergence curriculum.

Interest in the school environment design is increasing as the project to restructure school space and to become common in school through smart devices. However, no research has been presented on the current status of studies on school environmental design, and the need for analysis of recent research trends in school environmental design is required. In response, this study aims to provide basic data on school environmental design by analysing the trends of domestic studies of school environmental design since 2010 and to present the direction of research on future school environmental design. A total of 312 papers related to school architecture and spatial design are set for study in the results of academic information search on school environmental design. Based on this, frequency analysis and cross-sectional analysis are conducted based on the classification table according to the year of issue, research subject, research purpose, and research method. The statistical significance of the research subjects was secured in accordance with the year of issue and subject to study, and accordingly the key research key words were derived. It is meaningful that through this study, the current status of school environmental design research over the last 10 years can be analyzed and the direction for the future school environmental design research has been suggested.

Since the introduction of the new Variation Type school, few studies have focused on students' adaptation to the changes in their learning environments at school. This paper is based on the Stage-Environment Fit theory, which asserts that a successful school life(in terms of motivation to learn) is ensured only when the school environment meets the social and emotional needs of students. Focusing on the third-grade student's adaptation to a new Variation Type school during their middle school period, the following conclusions were drawn. First, the transition to a new Variation Type school during middle school is much more difficult than adjusting to a new Variatio Type school upon admission to middle school. Second, this difficulty in adaptation is caused by socio-emotional dissatisfaction in adolescent students, for whom deconstruction of previous friendships can hinder motivation to learn. Third, third-grade students who experienced stress due to spatial changes tended to have a negative attitude towards the new Variation Type itself as they feel more tired from failing to use the space properly. Fourth, to transition successfully to a new Variation Type school, socio-emotional problems must be solved through the reduction of scale of the homebase, and the provision of various choices increasing the number of homebase.

The purpose of this study is presentation of architectural planning direction and program space of youth training center. For this goal, surveyed the characteristics of youth and local residents who the main user of the center Through this survey, it could be accommodated about the needs of youth training facilities and seek user-centered planning methodologies. To this end, this study conducted a survey of users of youth training facilities in Cheonan-si to suggest the importance of architectural planning direction and space to reflect users' needs and regional characteristics. In the process, this study conducted a consciousness survey and importance influence factors assessment focused on commonalities and differences between youth and adult groups, which are the main user groups of youth training facilities. It is believed that the results of consciousness survey and importance influence factors assessment will be used as basic data to select the scale and programs of space that reflect the needs of users when planning youth facilities and related facilities in the future.
