This study aims to suggest an evaluation method of thermal environment using CFD, not an experiment, which is usual in the field. Model train is the newly introduced Mugunghwa train. Since its compartment occupies a large space and chairs and other accessories make it a complicated structure, 3-D calculation might take too much time and effort to make evaluation itself possible. Therefore, we suggest a 2-D model to replace the original 3-D model for averaged temperature and temperature distribution in the cabin.

Global average temperature rise accelerates by global warming in the three decades of the 20th century. But now we use heating degree days which was established 20 years ago. Therefore new heating degree days for 15 district areas of korea was determined using long-term measured data. Five different base temperatures ranging from 24 to
$16^{\circ}C$ were chosen in the calculation of heating degree days. And yearly heating degree days were given in the tabular form. -
In most existing research, it is difficult to evaluate thermal comfort exactly because of reflecting individual ideal or psychological response by subjective questions. Physiological variable was selected in this study to evaluate objectively thermal comfort. MST was appeared very sensitively in indoor temperature and can express correctly thermal comfort of human body. The results of CSV are different each individual feeling sensation, so is difficult to evaluate detailedly thermal comfort unlike TSV. But the results of PP, AIx, ED, SEVR are greatly related to temperature change. So thermal comfort is evaluated more objectively by using PP, AIx, ED, SEVR on behalf of TSV, CSV. Human body was presented physiological feedback by temperature impetus and specially, tendency of heart rate agree with temperature change. Physiological reaction was showed sufficient possibility availing evaluation index of thermal comfort. In the future another one needs to review beside the selected physiological variable.

In order to protect the environment from the refrigerant pollution, the
$CO_2$ may be regarded as one of the most attractive alternative refrigerants for an automotive air-conditioning system. Control methods for a$CO_2$ system should be different because of$CO_2$ 's unique properties as a refrigerant. Especially, the high-side pressure of a$CO_2$ system should be controlled for the effective operation of the system. In this study, the high-side pressure setpoint algorithm was developed by using a neural network and a Lagrange interpolation method. These methods were compared. Simulation results showed that a Lagrange interpolation method was more effective than a neural network in the respect of its easiness of programming and shorter execution time. -
Effective Dynamic Models for the Development of Control Algorithms of a Condensing Gas Boiler SystemCondensing gas boiler units may make a big role for the reduction of energy consumption in heating industries. In order to decrease the energy consumption of a condensing gas boiler unit, the effective operations and controls of the system are necessary. In this study, mathematical models of a condensing gas boiler system were developed and programmed in order to predict dynamic behaviors of the system. These include dynamic models for a blower, a gas valve, a pump, a burner, a boiler heat exchanger, and a hot water heat exchanger. Control algorithms for the control of a gas valve, a blower, and a pump were also assumed. Simulation results showed good predictions of the dynamic phenomena of a boiler system. Therefore, the simulation program developed for this study may be effectively used for the development of control algorithms of the boiler system.

This study deals with on-line fault detection and diagnosis for heat exchanger of variable speed refrigeration system. Conventional studies about fault of heat exchanger in refrigeration system have used temperature and pressure information. The temperature and pressure are able to be used valuably for faults detection of constant speed refrigeration system. However in case of variable speed refrigeration system, the temperature and pressure are no longer useful information for fault detection due to compensation effect of feedback controller. While current information is possible to detect faults of variable speed refrigeration system. The current information was detected in an inverter, it was used after transforming rms value. The faults of variable speed refrigeration system are divided into electrical faults and mechanical faults. We performed fault detection and diagnosis about heat exchanger among mechanical faults such as condenser fouling and evaporator fan fouling through some experiments.

Tracer gas technique is widely used to measure the ventilation rates and/or ventilation effectiveness of building spaces. However, the conventional method using a single tracer gas can measure only outdoor air change rates in a single zone. This paper deals with the multi-gas tracer technique to measure air exchange rates between rooms. Interzonal air movements are important to characterize overall ventilation performance of complicated multi-zone buildings. Experiments are conducted in a simple two-room model with known airflow rates using tracer gases of SF6 and R134a. The concentration decays of two tracer gases are measured after simultaneous injections in each room. The governing equations are derived from the continuity and the mass balance of each room. The data reduction procedure are developed to obtain the inter-room airflow rates using the governing matrix inversion, and various data manipulation methods are tested, such as data shift, interpolation, smoothing, and etc, to improve the estimate and interpretation of the results.

Recently developed raised floor heating system is not only capable of basic function to reduce noise between floors, but also is a multi-functional floor heating system enabling natural ventilation. The procedure of this system for natural ventilation is to import outdoor air through bottom space of the floor heating system, circulate indoor space and discharge it out of ceiling. In winter, powerless natural ventilation is possible with buoyancy effect caused by temperature difference between outdoor and indoor. And it also allows saving of energy by importing pre-heated air in bottom space of the floor heating system. To evaluate ventilation performance of this system, on-site measurement was conducted in 2 test laboratories, and the nominal air change rate was satisfied as 0.4
$\sim$ 0.8 h-1 under the condition of outdoor temperature$5^{\circ}C{\sim}-5^{\circ}C$ , which was evaluated as highly possible to be applied as a natural ventilation system in multi-family houses. -
As the economic living standards are higher, the demands for more comfortable living space are also larger. In the response of this requirements, studies for improving indoor air environment have been conducted. In case of newly-built apartment buildings, the standard for the minimum ventilation to improve their indoor air quality was made. This study analysed the experimental results from the mock-up test of the hybrid ventilation system which is composed of natural and mechanical ventilation.

Ventilation performance in the storage hall of Janggyeongpan Jeon has maintained for more than 600 years. Janggyeongpan Jeon in Haein temple has window structure of bi-level ventilating opening which consists of upper and lower window. Also, different size and shape of windows are adopted for various locations of the hall. In the present study, to analyze effect of shape of windows on ventilation performance in the storage hall, various design alternatives were considered. Numerical analysis of ventilation in the storage hall was investigated under the same simulation condition except for the shape of windows. Through the comparison of numerical results for various window designs, it was evaluated that the current windows shape gives best ventilation performance.

Due to the construction technique (or the construction culture) growth in and out of Korea, newly-developed products have been continuously released. Furthermore, all legislation and regulation that the World follows are gradually becoming unified. (e.g. FTA(Free Trade Agreement) with the United States was contracted, and inevitable FTA contraction with EU and China ), For this reason, it is considered that Korean fire regulation on building interior materials needs to be reviewed and compared with that of international standard so that it becomes legitimate and reasonable one. Especially, this reference is going to make a description of building interior materials' Flame retardant performance standard.

Recently indoor air pollution caused by exposing hazardous chemicals (VOCs, formaldehyde) due to undiscriminated use of new construction materials and air-tightness to save energy is becoming a big issue. We have developed technologies to estimate the amounts of contaminants from constructions materials and method. We have further developed construction technologies to reduce and characterize these contaminants. The developed technologies were then refined to eliminate defects through considering field applicability.

Now, in Korea, the performances of the building service equipment relay on the individual superintendent's share for the assessment of performance, fault detection, deterioration diagnosis of the building service equipment. As the result, very different quality of the performance or the durability of equipment is being obtained with his skill and effort and it is also not easy to assess that quality. This finally lead to the waste of labor force and the operating cost due to the high-cost, low-efficiency system. How to construct the N-BMS was considered to save energy, resource and to conserve performance of building service equipment. The FEMIS, facility, energy/environmental management & information system, for building service offer management process integrated with BAS, FMS and EMS and so on.

Various thermostatic valves have been used widely in Korea for conservation of heating energy and enhancement of thermal comfort in residential buildings. But heating control performances of thermostatic valves extensively vary with the design and operational conditions of the heating system, climate condition and others. An experimental method was carried out in this study to analyze heating control characteristics by temperature sensing methods of thermostatic valves for various parameters, such as supply temperatures and flow rate of hot water, the position of room thermostats and outdoor air temperatures. As a result, the heat flow rate per day of S-Valve(
$34^{\circ}C$ -Type) of water temperature sensing method was liked that of C-Valve of indoor air temperature sensing method with stage 3.3 of room thermostat in case supply temperature of hot water was$45^{\circ}C$ , flow rate was 1.3 L/min and outdoor air temperature was$7.8^{\circ}C$ . -
A predictive pulse control strategy as a means of improving the energy efficiency of radiant floor heating systems is explored. Experiments at the apartment with floor heating system are conducted to assess and compare the energy performance of the predictive pulse control strategy with an existing conventional control strategy. The Results showed that new suggested PPCM( Predictive Pulse Control Method) was available to decrease the gap of
$1{\sim}1.5^{\circ}C$ between maximum and minimum indoor temperature of each rooms. Therefore PPCM method was favor to radiant floor heating system which have a delay time of 10-20 minutes for heat transfer by floor layers. -
This study aims to evaluate theoretically heat transfer characteristics and heat flux performance in ondol system of dried type is composed of panel of ceramics to improve of thermal conductivity and fin to expand heat. To this end, we analyzed effect of design factors(temperature of hot water, set temperature of room and thermal conductivity of finishing materials) in ondol system of dried type by heat transfer analysis. The main results of this study are summarized as follows; The deviation of heat flux and temperature was reduced by heat expansion from fin decreasing heat loss generated in air layer. The temperature and heat flux in upper finishing materials surface linearly increased according to temperature increment of hot water, but the temperature distribution in upper surface was assessed uneven. The greater heat resistance value of upper finishing materials, the deviation of maximum temperature and minimum temperature was decreased. Also, we suggested a basic design data about ondol system of dried type through an analysis of simulation results on heat transfer characteristics and heat flux performance.

For the successful design of heat exchangers, it is very important to understand local heat transfer characteristics on the circular cylinder of the cross flow heat exchangers. In this study, the heat exchanger using screen is developed to enhance heat transfer. The naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to measure the local heat transfer coefficients in the heat exchanger. The experiments are performed for single circular tube, in-line array tube bank with and without heat transfer promoter. Local Nusselt numbers of single circular tube and tube bank with heat transfer promoter are investigated and compared to those of without heat transfer promoter.

This paper presents the measuring technique for local heat transfer coefficients using a copper sensor in a rod bundle with mixing vanes. A copper sensor consists of a cartridge heater and four pieces of thermocouple. The Heater is located at the center of the copper sensor and thermocouples measure the surface temperature of the copper sensor. Unheated copper sensor and heated copper sensor are able to measure the local heat transfer coefficient at the position where the heated copper sensor is installed. However the entire region of a rod bundle is actually not heated, the decay of local heat transfer coefficients measured represents overestimated value rather than an actual value. The calibration curve for local heat transfer coefficients is presented using the correction factor calculated by CFD.

In this study, the cooling characteristics of a liquid cooler using thermoelectric module was experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted for various inner structures of liquid cooler (4 cases), hot fluid flow rates (0.15-0.25 L/min), number of T.E module (2, 4, 6 set), and the cooling water flow rates (200-600 cc/min) for both parallel and counter flow types. Among the results, better cooling performance geometry was selected. And experiment was also carried out to examine further enhancement of cooling performance by inserting coils (pitches: 0.2, 3, 6 mm) into the hot-fluid channel. Present results showed that the short serpentine type(case2) indicated the best cooling performance. In the case of coil pitch of 3 mm, the best cooling performance was shown, more than 10% increase of the inlet and outlet temperature difference, compared with the case of the cooler without coil. Consequently, the inserted coil pitch should be properly selected to improve cooling performance.

Drying characteristics are confirmed by experiment to a printing machine which use Gravure ink or metal ink for an optimum design of direct radiation drying system room using NIR. As a result, Drying is easily accomplished in short distance and low moving speed in Gravure ink, but drying is dropped in metal ink because of oil. This confirmed that the development of water metal ink had to be proceeded to accomplish a perfect drying condition.

An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of a coolant circuit arrangement on the heat transfer and air pressure drop of a fin-tube sensible heat exchanger with the corrugated fin surface. The air inlet temperature was set to
$23^{\circ}C$ ,the relative humidity to 50% and the air inlet flow rate to 20, 22,$25m^3/min$ , respectively. while the coolant temperature was set to$7^{\circ}C$ , and the coolant mass flow rate to 10, 16, 22kg/min, respectively. Experiment showed that the exchanger having a diameter of 12.7mm with parallel circuit does better performance in sensible heat transfer and air pressure drop than those three of diameter of 12.7mm with a series circuit and that with diameter of 15.88mm with a parallel circuit. -
The effect of inclination angle on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of brazed aluminum heat exchangers is experimentally investigated. Three samples having different fin pitches (1.25, 1.5 and 2.0 mm) were tested. Results show that heat transfer coefficient is not affected by the inclination angle. However, the friction factor increases as the inclination angle increases with negligible difference between the forward and backward inclination. Both the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor are the smallest at
$P_f$ =1.5mm, followed by$P_f$ =2.0mm and 1.25mm. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver layout. Comparison with existing correlations is also mad. -
Microscale heat transfer and microfluidics have become increasingly important to overcome some very complex engineering challenges. The use of very small passages to gain heat transfer enhancement is a well documented method for achieving high heat flux dissipation. As the passage size is decreased, the heat transfer performance increases but the pressure drop increases sharply when the passage size is reduced. In this study, the performance evaluation of micro plated heat exchangers under the counter flows with straight, V-shaped and Y-shaped channel are carried out.

Performance of an air-cooled plate heat exchanger (PHE) was evaluated in this study. The PHE was manufactured in two types of single-wave and double-wave plates in parallel assembly. The heat exchanger aims to substitute open-loop cooling towers with closed-loop water circulation, which guarantees cleanliness and compactness. In this study, prototype single-wave and double-wave PHEs were designed and tested in a laboratory scale experiments. From the tests, the double-wave PHE shows approximately 50% enhanced heat transfer performance compared to the single-wave PHE. However, the double-wave PHE costs 30% additional pressure drop. For the commercialization, a wide channel design for air flow would be essential for performance and reliability.

The present paper dealt with an experimental study of boiling heat transfer characteristics of
$CO_2$ . Heat transfer coefficients of the refrigerant flow inside horizontal smooth microchannel were obtained with inner tube diameter of 0.3mm and length of 300mm. The direct electric heating method was applied for supplying the heat uniformly to the refrigerant. The experiments were conducted with$CO_2$ purity of 99.99%, at saturation temperature of$10^{\circ}C$ , mass flux ranges of$300{\sim}900\;kg/m^2s$ , and heat flux ranges of$15{\sim}45\;kW/m^2$ . While heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of heat flux in the low quality region, the heat transfer coefficient decreased with the increase of quality in the high quality region. The heat transfer coefficients were compared with seven existing correlations with the Gungor-Winterton's(1986) correlation gave the best prediction. A new corelation to predict the two-phase flow heat transfer coefficient was developed based on the Chen(1966) correlation. The new correlation predicted the experimental data well with a mean deviation of 9.69% and average deviation of -3.03%. -
Because of the ozone layer depletion and global warming, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. In this study, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide flowing upward in a vertical micro-fin tube have been investigated by experiment. Before a test section, a pre-heater is installed to adjust the inlet quality of the refrigerant to a desired value. The micro-fin tube with outer diameter of 5 mm and length of 1.44 m was selected as the test section. The test was conducted at mass fluxes of 318 to
$530\;kg/m^2s$ , saturation temperature of -5 to$5^{\circ}C$ , and heat fluxes of 15 to$30\;kW/m^2$ . As the vapor quality increases, the heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide are increased, and the heat transfer coefficients increase when the heat fluxes and saturation temperatures increase, and there was not much of influence of mass flux on the heat transfer coefficients. -
The present study investigated the effect of air velocity on frost formation of slit fin-and-tube heat exchanger under frosting condition. The slit fin-and-tube heat exchanger with outer tube diameter 7.0mm and 1 row was used. Air side pressure drop, photographs of frost distribution, frost accumulation and frost thickness were presented with respect to the frosting time. In the early stage of experiment, the case with air velocity of 1.5m/s showed 403% higher for the air pressure drop than the case with the air velocity of 0.5m/s. As the frost was accumulated, the effect of air velocity on air pressure drop was decreased. In the end stage of test, air pressure drops of two cases were very close and air pressure drop for the air velocity of 0.5m/s was higher than that of 2.0m/s. It was also shown in the photographs of frost distribution, frost accumulation and frost thickness. From frost thickness, fanning friction factor was presented.

The underfloor air distribution system has been attracting to architects and building owners as one of valuable system for the renovated and newly office building. In this paper, we discussed the thermal stratification profile of pressurized plenum underfloor air distribution(UFAD) according to indoor setting temperature, diffuser number, diffuser type. For this, the space of office building(H corp.) is selected for measuring the air volume of underfloor diffuser and vertical temperature profile. As a result, the thermal stratification profile is influenced by the number and type of the underfloor diffuser and thermal storage character of the underfloor. Whereas indoor setting temperature have a lower significant impact on thermal stratification.

Dedicated outdoor air(DOA) system which conditions the outdoor air separately is superior to conventional cooling+reheating system with respect to energy consumption and indoor comfort. Since the sensible and latent load characteristics of indoor and outdoor are different, it is more efficient to treat them separately. In this study, cycle analysis and on-site performance test of DOA system have been conducted. The study shows that DOA requires 48.8% less equivalent energy that conventional system. The on-site performance test of the prototype shows that the coefficient of performance(COP) of the DOA system is 37.4% higher than the conventional system.

A system heat pump provides the benefits of comfort, energy conservation and easy maintenance. Recently, the system heat pump has been employed in small and medium-sized buildings. However, the performance data and control algorithm for system heat pump are limited in literature due to complicated system parameters and operating conditions. In the present study, the performance of a system heat pump with two indoor unit is measured by varying indoor loads, EEV opening, and compressor speed. In addition, the integral optimum regulator which includes MIMO control algorithm is proposed. The capacity modulation and optimum capacity for each indoor unit can be adjusted by utilizing the EEVs opening and compressor speed. The proposed scheme shows appropriate control performance at test conditions.

GHP system utilize national gas as a heat source. It reduces electric peak demand in summer and maintains a constant performance in winter by recovering the waste heat from the engine. Although the initial investment cost of GHP is higher than that of EHP, the overall operating cost of GHP is cheaper than of the EHP. In this study, items for dissatisfaction were summarized based on the results of user questionnaire(200 users), and field tests were made for 10 GHP installation places. The measured COP was estimated much lower than the rated COP by the manufacturer mainly due to partial load operation.

In this paper, conceptual design of scroll expander-compressor for Stirling engine utilizing solar energy as heat source has been carried out. Orbiting scroll member was designed to have a double-sided structure to reduce the overall scroll size and to cancel out the axial forces on the orbiting scroll base plate. Diameter of designed scroll base plate was about 251 mm for the expander, and it was about 218 mm for the compressor. With operating condition such as temperature range of
$400^{\circ}C/20^{\circ}C$ , pressure range of 6 MPa/2 MPa, and shaft speed of 2700 rpm, the shaft output of the designed scroll expander was calculated to be 49.8 kW, while input power for the scroll compressor was 38.6 kW, yielding 11.2 kW for the output power of the Stirling engine. Overall efficiencies of the scroll expander and compressor were 93.73% and 92.87%, respectively. -
For a hermetic reciprocating compressor, it has been known that the gas pulsation in the suction line affects the compressor performance, and suction muffler design has been focused on both of noise reduction and minimum pressure drop across the muffler. Some studies have been carried out on the mutual interaction between the gas pulsation and the cylinder pressure to investigate some supercharging effects, but their efforts were limited on rather simple geometries. In this paper, interaction of the gas pulsation in the compressor suction line with cylinder pressure via suction valve motion has been calculated; for the gas pulsation analysis, modeling of Helmholtz resonators in series was used, and for cylinder pressure calculation, energy equations was set up for the gas inside the cylinder. For demonstration of this calculation method, four different types of suction line configurations for a hermetic reciprocating compressor were compared in terms of compressor performance and gas pulsation level.

The optimization of back pressure chamber is one of the most important factors in designing scroll compressors, because it has a great influence on the efficiencies and other design parameters. The design process can be divided into 2 parts. One is obtaining the optimum pressure of the chamber and keeping it in constant value. And the other is finding out the minimum inflow rate of medium with which back pressure chamber is filled. In this study we are focused on the first step. At first we added a simple structure that could change back pressure without reassembling compressor. It makes the optimum back pressure be obtained. And then we devised an equipment that the back pressure control valve assembly could be independently tested with. A spring was redesigned to decrease stiffness variation. And sealing mechanism of back pressure control valve was improved to more effective way. As a result it was verified in a real mode test that back pressure variation could be stabilized within 2.3% when discharge pressure and operating frequency varied. And the integrated structure of back pressure control valve is expected to contribute to an effective manufacturing process.

This study was performed to construct a geothermal data base about thermal conductivity of ground heat exchanger and thermal properties of grouting material which used to refill the borehole. We have acquired geothermal data sets from 39 sites over wide area of South Korea except to Jeju island. From data analysis, the range of thermal conductivity is 1.5
$\sim$ 4.0 W/mK. It means that thermal conductivity varies with grouting material as well as regional geology and ground water system. -
Cement mortar and concrete can be used as grouts but problems regarding shrinkage and the discord of coefficients of thermal expansion between grouts and HDPE pipes has to be solved. Thermal conductivities of wet condition two times larger than those of dry condition, except for pure cement mortar. The addition of sand into the cement grouts greatly increases the thermal conductivity. The addition of bentonite into the cement grouts reduces thermal conductivity thus reducing the density. Bentonite grouting must be used only below the groundwater table since bentonite grouts possesses high shrinkage property in dry condition. The addition of sand prevents the shrinkage of bentonite grouts. Bentonite manufactured in Korea can be used since they possess similar thermal conductivities with imported products. The addition of sand into the bentonite grouts greatly increases the thermal conductivity.

The Effluent ground water overflows in deep and broad ground space building. Temperature of effluent ground water is in 12
$\sim$ 18$^{\circ}C$ annually and the quality of that water is as good as living water. Therefore if the flow rate of effluent ground water is sufficient as source of heat pump, that is good heat source and heat sink of heat pump. Effuent ground water contain the thermal energy of surrounding ground. So this is a new application of ground source heat pump. In this study open type and close type heat pump system using effluent ground water was installed and tested for a church building with large and deep ground space. The effluent flow rate of this building is 800$\sim$ 1000 ton/day. The heat pump capacity is 5RT each. The heat pump system heating COP was 3.0$\sim$ 3.3 for the open type and 3.3$\sim$ 3.8 for the close type system. The heat pump system cooling COP is 3.2$\sim$ 4.5 for the open type and 3.8$\sim$ 4.2 for close type system. This performance is up to that of BHE type ground source heat pump. -

This present study is to evaluate the cooling performance of a water-to-refrigerant ground source heat pump system(GSHP) under actually operating condition. 1 unit is selected among 10 units of the GSHP in the building to analyze the performance. The average cooling COP of the GSHP at the part load of 64% is 8.2, overall system COP is 6.19. In the GSHP system, the cooling temperature of the condenser is lower compared to the air source heat pump system. Conclusively, the cooling performance of the GSHP is higher than the air source heat pump system by 80%. -
Greenhouses should be heated during nights and cold days in order to fit growth conditions in greenhouses. Ground source heat pump(GSHP) or geothermal heat pump system(GHPs) is recognized to be outstanding heating and cooling system. Horizontal GSHP system is typically less expensive than vertical GSHP system but requires wide ground area to bury ground heat exchanger(GHE). In this study, a horizontal GSHP system with thermal storage tank was installed in greenhouse and investigated as performance characteristics. In the daytime, heating load of greenhouse is very small or needless because solar radiation increases inner air temperature. The results of study showed that the heating coefficient of performance of the heat pump (
$COP_h$ ) was 2.9 and the overall heating coefficient of performance of the system($COP_{sys}$ ) was 2.4. Heating energy cost was saved 76% using the horizontal GSHP system with thermal storage tank. -
The importance of the evaluation and verification of small-size cogeneration system has been emphasized because there is no KS-code related to the small-size cogeneration system. The evaluation method of small-size engine cogeneration system was investigated by the reference of Japan evaluation code, JIS B-8122 and international standard organization, ISO-8528. Evaluation method was introduced such as start-test, rapid-load-up and rapid-load-down, etc. The evaluation method was applied to the 300kW small-size gas engine cogeneration system newly developed. This study was conducted to calculate the LCC of a apartment complex with a type of heating system, district heating and cogeneration system. For the purpose of analyzing LCC according to size of apartment complex, 500, 1,500 and 4,000 houses of model apartment selected. This research performs design of heating system and the life cycle cost analysis including an initial cost, energy cost, maintenance and operation cost, replacement cost and renovation cost during the project period(15years). According to the calculated results, 1) Initial cost of cogeneration system with 500, 1500 and 4000 houses is higher than district heating system each of 20%, 13%, 12%. 2) In case of cogeneration system, the payback period by electric generation is 5.21, 4.92 and 4.47 years and saving cost was calculated 29 billion won, 94 billion won and 262 billion won after payback period. 3) Cogeneration system LCC was 1.12, 1.07 and 1.06 times larger than district system with the size of apartment complex. According to the case of this study district heating system is more efficient than cogeneration system in terms of the reduction of LCC. 4) Gas Engine Co-generation System is more efficient than other systems because it can collect progressive part from electric charge progressive stage system. However, the efficiency is decreasing because of raising of fuel bills(LNG) and lowering of power rate for house use. Especially the engine is foreign-made so the cost of maintenance and repair is high and the technical expert is short. 5) District heating is also affected by fuel bills so we should improve energy efficiency through recovering of waste heat(incineration heat, etc.). Also, we should supply district cooling on the pattern of heat using of let the temperature high in winter and low in summer.

The thermal reliability of the closed-type BLDC motor for the high speed axial fans is analyzed by a numerical method in this dissertation. Since the module and the motor part are combined in a closed case, the heat generated from a rotor in the motor and the electronic components in the PCB module can not be effectively removed to the outside. Therefore the module will easily fail by high temperature. The accelerated-life testing was accomplished to formulate the life equation and numerical method is used to predict the inside temperature of the PCB module, which is one of the life equation parameter according to the environment. The experiment for measuring the surface heat flux of the electronic components is carried out to apply the boundary condition of numerical study. When the environment temperature of BLDC motor is 21, 35 and
$50^{\circ}C$ , the temperature in the PCB space is predicted as 73.4, 87.5 and$102.4^{\circ}C$ . Then the life time with the temperature are calculated as 2,239, 863 and 328. -
A Study on Typical Rates of Water-use for School Facilities has been carried out in this work. Water supply system is given much weight in school facilities. Therefore, it set up a basis efficiency using of water sources to calculate typical rates of water use. The results are summarized as follows ; 1) On the whole, typical rates of water-use was founded out 15 L / stu. d in pirmary school, 10 L / stu. d in middle school and 30L / stu. d in high school smaller than the existing it. It was rate of water-use change as season and Max. Rates of water-use was July. 2) I deem that school hours are 5 hour's in primary school, 7 hour's in middle school and 8 hour's in high school. It the concept of 1 hour that is lesson time 40 minutes and resting time 10 minutes in primary school, lesson time 45 minutes and resting time 10 minutes in middle school and lesson time 50 minutes and resting time 10 minutes in high school. 3) It is desired that we calculate the volume of pump and water tank throughout this concept and the size of water tank should be 1.5 times with taking pick load into consideration by this study on typical rate of water-use. 4) The amount of using water increases in gradually and I consider the life cycle of facilities is more than 10 years. As a result, I can forecast that the size will be insufficiency but I deem that if we devise a plan about parallel pumping on water tank space, we can cope with it. Also, it is expected that we can cut back the transport energy by controlling pump volume.

A finned tube type heat transfer module has been proposed for a multi-burner water tube boiler. Fins change their geometry along the streamwise direction to maximize the performance, which makes it difficult to apply conventional bulk analysis. The design program has been improved by updating data for every row of tubes along the flow. A numerical simulation has been also performed to evaluate the effect of inlet conditions and validated with experiment. The heat transfer of the first row has been underpredicted by the conventional Zhukauskas correlation, where the acceleration of the flow due to the blockage is not fully inflected. The fin tip temperature is also underpredicted by Bessel solution, because of the interaction with neighboring fins.

The objectives of the present work is to investigate the influence of the solution cooled absorber(SCA), refrigerant drain heat exchanger(RSX), exhaust gas/solution heat exchanger(ESX) and high efficiency solution heat exchanger on COP for a double-effect series-flow absorption chiller. A simulation program has been prepared for the cycle analysis of absorption chillers. As a result, Solution heat exchangers(LSX, HSX) are a most effective element for the COP than the others. In spite of the poor contribution to COP, SCA make a rule to reduce the crystallization phenomena of LiBr solution at solution heat exchanger. And the optimum solution split ratio are varied with the relative size of RSX and LSX.

The performance of microturbine CHP system equipped with an absorption chiller was analyzed by modelling of a microturbine and an absorption chiller. The microturbine having recuperator was simulated by the Brayton cycle model. The mass flow rate and available heat energy of the exhaust gas from the microtubune were simulated, and this results were utilized as input values for the generator of the absorption chiller. The absorption chiller is a single-effect air cooled type having solution heat exchanger. When heat input to the generator increased, the heat transfer rate and UA of the heat exchangers of the absorption chiller proportionally increased. Besides, the COP of the absorption chiller increased with increase of the heat input to the generator under the sufficient size of the evaporator condition. When the capacity of the CHP system increased from 30 to 60 kW, the mass flow rate of the LiBr for the absorption chiller increased by two times, and UA values for evaporator and condenser were increased by 3.9 and 3.4 times, respectively, under the same COP condition.

The present study numerically investigated the tube geometry and arrangement on the performance of a high temperature generator (HTG) of the double effect LiBr-water absorption system. FLUENT, as a commercial code, was used to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. Key parameters were the spacing raito of circular and flattened tubes, the pitch ratio of the rib on the flattened tube, and total heat transfer area of the HTG. Temperature and velocity profiles around the tubes of the HTG were calculated to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. When the spacing ratio of circular and flattened tube is 1.11 and 0.73, the exhaust gas temperature is
$185^{\circ}C$ without rib. The exhaust gas temperature when applied the rib in flattened tubes was lower by$24^{\circ}C$ than that without the rib. Rib can reduce the HTG volume by 7%. -
Due to the recent improvement of living standard of residential buildings, the requirements of the thermal comfort and energy saving in heating system have been raised. The radiant floor heating system has been widely used as a residential heating method, which has been modernized to use hot water running into the tubes embedded in the floor structure. The uniform flow distribution is very important factor for a radiant floor heating system such as a blood vessel system in human body. The thermal performance of the air receiver filled with porous material for 5kWt dish solar collector installed in Inha University, Korea, is experimentally investigated. The diameter of the parabolic dish is 3.2 m, and its focal length is 2 m. It consists of 10 small pieces of glasses which have their own curvatures, and the effective reflecting area is 5.9 m2. The reflectivity of the glass is 0.95, and the thermal capacity of the system is about 5 kW thermal. The aperture diameter of the cylindrical-shape receiver which is made of stainless steel is 100 mm, and the height is 210 mm. A quartz window is installed at the receiver aperture to minimize the convective heat loss and prevent air leakages. In order to increase the heat transfer area, porous material (nickel-alloy) is inserted into the receiver. Air flows into the upper part of the receiver, which is the opposite side of the aperture. After the air flows through the inside receiver, that goes out of the receiver through 3 exits which are located near the aperture. The volumetric flow rates of air are varied from 600 to 1200 L/min. The thermal efficiency of the receiver ranges from 82% - 92% depending upon the flow rate. The results show that the system efficiency and receiver efficiency increase as the volume flow rate increases as expected. These results from the experiment will be useful for the applications to air heating receivers and solar reactors. -
A PIV(Particle Imaging Velocimetry) diagnostic technique for the evaluation of the flow characteristics in refrigerator is introduced. Smoke particles of which density is small enough to follow up the air flow are used for visualization of the air flows in the refrigerators. A rectangular room model is tested for the verifications of the dignostic technique. By evaluating the turbulent intensity and the deviation value of the turbulent intensity distribution that were obtained from PIV results, an optimal ventilating condition is suggested. The constructed technique is used for the diagnostics on the flow of an actual refrigerator. It has experimentally proved that the present technique is able to evaluate the ventilation conditions of refrigerators.

Pulsation is an inherent phenomenon in reciprocating compressors. It interacts with piping to cause vibrations and performance problems. Indiscriminately connecting to a compressor can be dangerous and cost money in the form of broken equipment and piping, poor performance, inaccurate metering, unwanted vibration, and sometimes noise. Piping connected to a compressor can materially affect the performance and response. To minimize these detrimental effects, reciprocating compressor system should be equipped by pulsation suppression system. This study discusses pressure pulsation phenomena occurred in a reciprocating compressor system. An experiment applied air compressor unit, as pulsating pressure generator, has been done. The compressor was connected sequentially to a snubber model and pressure tank. Sensor probes were placed on the inlet and outlet pipes of snubber. Compressor was driven by a motor controlled by a frequency regulator. The experiment was conducted by adjusting the regulator at 40Hz. General information about an internal gas flow can be achieved by numerical analysis approach. Information of the velocity, pressure and turbulence kinetic energy distribution are presented in this paper. Based on this result, the design improvement might be done.

Water meter frost in winter is a nuisance to the water administration and citizen as well. It causes stop of water supply, possibility of accident due to leakage freezing, and additional official work to change frost water meters. This study was carried out to give some basic information of water meter frost condition, to verify the effect of frost protection devices such as lagging vinyl cover, electric heater, and meter pit using subterranean heat. Nearly half of the number of the water meter frost happens in old apartment house with outer corridor, and temperature of the meter box was measured in that kind of apartment house, comparing with atmosphere temperature. The capability of three kinds of lagging vinyl cover was investigated by measuring the inside temperature of the insulated box. Also the capability of existing meter pits and new meter pits using subterranean heat was compared by measuring the inside temperature of the pits. One of the result is that the inside temperature of meter pits using subterranean heat was higher than that of the existing ones, and deeper pit causes higher inside temperature in case of using subterranean heat.

This study has been conducted to select the suitable refrigeration oil for a
$CO_2$ refrigeration system. The oil return is one of the most important characteristics for refrigeration oils. PAG and POE oils are considered as a test fluids in this study. An evaporator model is employed to simulate the evaporator of a$CO_2$ refrigeration system. Oil return characteristics has been investigated for$CO_2$ /PAG and$CO_2$ /POE mixtures in the range of oil concentration 0 to 5 weight-percent and the mixture temperature range of$0^{\circ}C$ to$15^{\circ}C$ . The results obtained indicate that oil return is decreased with an increase in the oil concentration and mixture temperature for both POE and PAG oils. It is also found that POE oil is seen to be superior than PAG oil in terms of oil return in an evaporator of a$CO_2$ refrigeration system. -
This paper is an interim report on the investigation of thermodynamic properties of
$CO_2$ /oil mixture refrigerant. First, liquid density of POE (poly-ol ester) and PAG (poly alkylene glycol) were measured and expressed as a function of temperature. Then, a solubility equation was developed which enables us to calculate the weight fraction of$CO_2$ for the mixture in a liquid state. An experimental apparatus with a cell was constructed to measure P-$\upsilon$ -T-$\chi$ data for$CO_2$ /oil mixture. The volume of the cell was determined using a certain formula considering change in volume as a function of temperature and pressure. Then, experimental data were obtained over the temperatures$40^{\circ}C$ ,$50^{\circ}C$ ,$60^{\circ}C$ ,$70^{\circ}C$ and$80^{\circ}C$ with various mole fractions. Finally, assuming a primitive model of ideal gas, the volume of$CO_2$ /oil mixture was predicted with a relatively larger error of 5.05% for$CO_2$ /PAG and 8.81% for$CO_2$ /POE. The volume of$CO_2$ /oil mixtures would be better predicted using an appropriate equation of state, of which results will be reported soon.
