With the current global need for eco-friendly energies, the large scale use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) is predicted. However, the need to frequently charge EVs to an electrical power system involves risks such as rapid increase of demand power. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a practical smart EV charging scheme considering a Time-of-Use (ToU) price to prevent the rapid increase of demand power and provide load leveling function. For a more practical analysis, we conduct simulations based on the actual distribution system and driving patterns in the Republic of Korea. Results show that the proposed method provides a proper load leveling function while preventing a rapid increase of demand power of the system.

In order to maintain customer voltages within the allowable limit($220{\pm}13V$ ) as much as possible, tap operation strategy of SVR(Step Voltage Regulator) which is located in primary feeder, is widely used for voltage control in the utilities. However, SVR in nature has operation characteristic of the delay time ranging from 30 to 150 sec, and then the compensation of BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) during the delay time is being required because the customer voltages in distribution system may violate the allowable limit during the delay time of SVR. Furthermore, interconnection of PV(Photovoltaic) system could make a difficultly to keep customer voltage within the allowable limit. Therefore, this paper presents an optimal coordination operation algorithm between BESS and SVR based on a conventional LDC (Line Drop Compensation) method which is decided by stochastic approach. Through the modeling of SVR and BESS using the PSCAD/EMTDC, it is confirmed that customer voltages in distribution system can be maintained within the allowable limit. -

False data injection attacks have recently been introduced as one of important issues related to cyber-attacks on electric power grids. These attacks aim to compromise the readings of multiple power meters in order to mislead the operation and control centers. Recent studies have shown that if a malicious attacker has complete knowledge of the power grid topology and branch admittances, s/he can adjust the false data injection attack such that the attack remains undetected and successfully passes the bad data detection tests that are used in power system state estimation. In this paper, we investigate that a practical false data injection attack is essentially a cyber-attack with uncertain information due to the attackers lack of knowledge with respect to the power grid parameters because the attacker has limited physical access to electric facilities and limited resources to compromise meters. We mathematically formulated a method of identifying the most vulnerable locations to false data injection attack. Furthermore, we suggest minimum topology changes or phasor measurement units (PMUs) installation in the given power grids for mitigating such attacks and indicate a new security metrics that can compare different power grid topologies. The proposed metrics for performance is verified in standard IEEE 30-bus system. We show that the robustness of grids can be improved dramatically with minimum topology changes and low cost. -
This paper presents a study on the state-of-charge (SOC) reference based active cell balancing in real-time. The optimal references of SOC are determined by using the proposed active cell balancing system with the bidirectional DC/DC converters via the dual active bridge (DAB) type. Then, the energies between cells can be balanced by the power flow control of DAB based bidirectional DC/DC converters. That is, it provides the effective management of battery by transferring energy from the strong cell to the weak one until the cell voltages are equalized to the same level and therefore improving the additional charging capacity of battery. In particular, the cell aging of battery and power loss caused from energy transfer are considered. The performances of proposed active cell balancing system are evaluated by an electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) simulation. Then, the experimental prototype is implemented in hardware to verify the usefulness of proposed system.

This paper proposes a novel approach to determine symmetrical components of power system by applying method of least squares in time domain. For the modern power system stability, clearance of faults on high voltage transmission lines in zero response time is crucial and important. Symmetrical components have a great attention since last century. They have been found an effective tool for the analysis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in power system. Moreover, magnitude of symmetrical components are also used as a caution about faults in system. With rapid changes in technology, Microprocessor assumed to be fastest machine of the modern era. Hence microprocessor based techniques were developed and implemented for last few decades. The proposed technique apply least square method in the computation of symmetrical components which is suitable as an application in microprocessor based monitoring and controlling power system in order to avoid cascading failures. Simulation of proposed model is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK and all results exploit the validity of model.

This paper deals with the operation strategy of reactive power in a multi-infeed HVDC (MIHVDC) system, in which several converters are connected to the same or nearby separate AC buses. The potential problems concerning a MIHVDC system when feeding a weak AC network are as follows: the need for coordination of the recovery control, the possibility of voltage instability or low quality of the area connected to the MIHVDC system, and the risk of mutual commutation failures. These problems in MIHVDC systems are similar to those in single-infeed HVDC (SIHVDC) systems, but the differences with the phenomenon of the SIHVDC system are the interactions between converters. The main reason for the potential problems of HVDC systems (MIHVDC or SIHVDC) is voltage variation; therefore, to mitigate the voltage variations, the performances of the HVDC system should be enhanced. Consequently, to mitigate the potential problems of MIHVDC systems, several solutions are suggested in this study, including installing STATCOM and installing a line arrester on the tower. The study results will be applied to a multi-infeed HVDC system in Korea.

The increasing of wind power penetration level presents challenges in classical optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) which is usually formulated as a deterministic optimization problem. This paper proposes a two-stage stochastic programming model for ORPD by considering the uncertainties of wind speed and load in a specified time interval. To avoid the excessive operation, the schedule of compensators will be determined in the first-stage while accounting for the costs of adjusting the compensators (CACs). Under uncertainty effects, on-load tap changer (OLTC) and generator in the second-stage will compensate the mismatch caused by the first-stage decision. The objective of the proposed model is to minimize the sum of CACs and the expected energy loss. The stochastic behavior is formulated by three-point estimate method (TPEM) to convert the stochastic programming into equivalent deterministic problem. A hybrid Genetic Algorithm-Interior Point Method is utilized to solve this large-scale mixed-integer nonlinear stochastic problem. Two case studies on IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus system are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. -

Considering the volatility, intermittent and random of photovoltaic (PV) generation systems, accurate forecasting of PV power output is important for the grid scheduling and energy management. In order to improve the accuracy of short-term power forecasting of PV systems, this paper proposes a prediction model based on environmental factors and support vector machine optimized by genetic algorithm (GA-SVM). In order to improve the prediction accuracy of this model, weather conditions are divided into three types, and the gray correlation coefficient algorithm is used to find out a similar day of the predicted day. To avoid parameters optimization into local optima, this paper uses genetic algorithm to optimize SVM parameters. Example verification shows that the prediction accuracy in three types of weather will remain at between 10% -15% and the short-term PV power forecasting model proposed is effective and promising. -
This paper proposes the explicit tuning rule of multi-loop PID controller for brushless direct current motors to predict the system behaviors in time and frequency domains, using properties of the convex combination method. The convex set of the proposed controllers formulates the envelope to satisfy the performances in time and frequency domains. The final control parameters are determined by solving the convex optimization problem subject to the constraints which are represented as convex set of time domain performances. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is shown in the numerical simulation, in which controller tuning algorithm and dynamics of brushless DC motor are well taken into account.

This paper presents the design of closed loop controllers operating a single-phase AC-DC three-level converter for improving power quality at AC mains. Closed loop inhibits outer voltage controller and inner current controller. Simulations of three level converter with three different voltage and current controller combinations such as PI-Hysteresis, Fuzzy-Hysteresis and Fuzzy tuned PI-Hysteresis are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink. Performance parameters such as input power factor and source current total harmonic distortion (THD) are considered for comparison of the three controller combinations. The fuzzy-tuned PI voltage controller with hysteresis current controller combination provides a better result, with a source-current THD of 0.93% and unity power factor without any source side filter for the three level converter. For load variations of 25% to 100%, a THD of less than 5% is obtained with a maximum value of only 1.67%. Finally, the fuzzy-tuned PI voltage with hysteresis controller combination is implemented in a Xilinx Spartan-6 XC6SLX25 FPGA board for experimental validation of power quality enhancement. A prototype 100 W, 0-24-48 V as output converter is considered for the testing of controller performance. A source-current THD of 1.351% is obtained in the experimental study with a power factor near unity. For load variations of 25% to 100%, the THD is found to be less than 5%, with a maximum value of only 2.698% in the experimental setup which matches with the simulation results. -

In order to meet the thermal performance analysis accuracy requirements of high density permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a method of multi physical domain coupling thermal analysis based on control circuit, electromagnetic and thermal is presented. The circuit, electromagnetic, fluid, temperature and other physical domain are integrated and the temperature rise calculation method that considers the harmonic loss on the frequency conversion control as well as the loss non-uniformly distributed and directly mapped to the temperature field is closer to the actual situation. The key is to obtain the motor parameters, the realization of the vector control circuit and the accurate calculation and mapping of the loss. Taking a 48 slots 8 poles high density PMSM as an example, the temperature rise distribution of the key components is simulated, and the experimental platform is built. The temperature of the key components of the prototype machine is tested, which is in agreement with the simulation results. The validity and accuracy of the multi physical domain coupling thermal analysis method are verified. -
This paper proposes performance improvement schemes for sensorless PMSM control drive using a four-switch three-phase inverter (so-called B4 inverter). In the proposed scheme, the back-EMF estimation-based sensorless control algorithm is used to control the brushless PMSM without position sensors. In order to have stable operation, this paper presents a gain adjustment scheme that compensates the reduction of stable sensorless operation range as long as the rotor speed increases. In B4 topology, the center point of dc-link capacitors is connected to 3-phase load, and it is prone to have the load current distortion. Hence, to mitigate this problem, a distortion compensation scheme by modifying voltage commands using measured dc-link potentials is proposed in this paper. The validity of the proposed method is evaluated by simulations and experiments.

This paper proposed a new real-time parameter tracking algorithm. Unlike the convenience algorithms, the proposed real-time parameter tracking algorithm can estimate parameters through three-phase voltage and electric current without coordination transformation, and does not need information on magnetic flux. Therefore, it can estimate parameters regardless of the change according to operation point and cross-saturation effect. In addition, as the quasi-real-time parameter tracking technique can estimate parameters through the four fundamental arithmetic operations instead of complicated algorithms such as numerical value analysis technique and observer design, it can be applied to low-performance DSP. In this paper, a new real-time parameter tracking algorithm is derived from three phase equation. The validity and usefulness of the proposed inductance estimation technique is verified by simulation and experimental results. -

Research on Maglev (Magnetic Levitation) train is currently being conducted in Korea, concerning Urban Transit (110 km/h of maximum speed), semi-high-speed (200 km/h of maximum speed), and high-speed (550 km/h of maximum speed) trains. This paper presents a research study on the levitation and guidance systems for the Korean semi-high-speed maglev train. A levitation electromagnet was designed, and the need for a separate guidance system was analyzed. A guidance electromagnet to control the lateral displacement of the train and ensure its stable operation was then also designed, and its characteristics were analyzed. The dynamic performance of the designed levitation and guidance electromagnets was modeled and analyzed, using a linearized modeling of the system equations of motion. Lastly, a test setup was prepared, including manufactured prototypes of the designed system, and the validity of the design was verified and examined with performance evaluation tests. -

This paper deals with the effects of welding, which is done to fix the stator stack, on a motor in case of fabricating a prototype motor that is manufactured in a small quantity. In the case of a small motor, the stator is designed and fabricated with the segmented core as a way to raise the fill factor of winding wire to the utmost within a limited size. In case of fabrication by welding both inside and outside of the stator in order to fix the segmented-core stator, the effects of stack are ignored, and the eddy current loss occurs. This paper performed the no-load test on an IPM-type BLDC motor for driving the suction fan of a vacuum cleaner, which was manufactured by using a segmented-core stator. As a result of the test, it was found that input power more than expected was supplied. To analyze the effects of welding by using the finite element analysis method and verify them experimentally, a stator was re-manufactured by bonding, and input power supplied during the no-load test was compared. -

This paper presents an adaptive control strategy for the speed control of a four-phase switched reluctance motor (SRM) in automotive applications. The main objective is to minimize the torque ripples, despite the unstructured uncertainties, time-varying parameters and external load disturbances. The bound of perturbations is not required to be known in the developing of the proposed adaptive-based control method. In order to achieve a smooth control effort, some properties are incorporated and the proposed control algorithm is constructed using the Lyapunov theorem where the closed-loop stability and robust tracking are ensured. The effectiveness of the proposed controller in rejecting high perturbed load torque with smooth control effort is verified with comparing of an adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) and validated with experimental results. -
This paper present a unified method of steady state performance analysis and limits characteristics of an autonomous three-phase self-excited induction generator (SEIG) driven by a wind turbine under different types of loads and speeds. The proposed method is based on a new mathematical function to solve for the real and imaginary components of the complex equation of the mathematical model. Performances limits, regulation and characteristics of different configurations will be thoroughly examined and compared. The proposed system will be modeled and simulated and the performance limits characteristics will be compared with variable speed and variable capacity.

This paper presents a new technique of reference current generator based on Kalman filter (KF) estimator for three-phase shunt active power filter (APF). The stationary reference frame (d-q algorithm) is used to transform the load currents into DC component. The harmonics of load currents are extracted and the three-phase reference currents are generated using KF estimator. The work is simulated using Matlab/Simulink platform. To validate the simulation results, an experimental test-rig have been perform using real-time control dSPACE DS1104. In addition, hysteresis current control was used to generate the switching signal for the correction of the harmonics in the system. The non-linear load were constructed with three-phase rectifier which connected in series with inductor and parallel with resistor and capacitor. The results shows that the new technique of shunt APF embedded with KF is proven to eliminate the harmonics created by the non-linear load with some improvement on the total harmonics distortion (THD). -

In the paper, a hybrid technique is proposed for detecting the location and capacity of distributed generation (DG) sources like wind and photovoltaic (PV) in power system. The novelty of the proposed method is the combined performance of both the Biography Based Optimization (BBO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) techniques. The mentioned techniques are the optimization techniques, which are used for optimizing the optimum location and capacity of the DG sources for radial distribution network. Initially, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is applied to obtain the available capacity of DG sources like wind and PV for 24 hours. The BBO algorithm requires radial distribution network voltage, real and power loss for determining the optimum location and capacity of the DG. Here, the BBO input parameters are classified into sub parameters and allowed as the PSO algorithm optimization process. The PSO synthesis the problem and develops the sub solution with the help of sub parameters. The BBO migration and mutation process is applied for the sub solution of PSO for identifying the optimum location and capacity of DG. For the analysis of the proposed method, the test case is considered. The IEEE standard bench mark 33 bus system is utilized for analyzing the effectiveness of the proposed method. Then the proposed technique is implemented in the MATLAB/simulink platform and the effectiveness is analyzed by comparing it with the BBO and PSO techniques. The comparison results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach and confirm its potential to solve the problem. -
In this paper, the bifurcation criteria for inductive power transfer (IPT) systems is suggested considering the inductive power pad losses. The bifurcation criteria for series-series (SS) and series-parallel (SP) topologies are derived in terms of the main parameters of the IPT system. For deriving precise criteria, power pad resistance is obtained by copper loss calculation and core loss analysis. Utilizing the suggested criteria, possibility of bifurcation occurrence can be predicted in the design process. In order to verify the proposed criteria, 50 W IPT laboratory prototype is fabricated and the feasibilities of the switching frequency and AC load resistance shift to escape from bifurcation are identified.

An arc eliminator allows a surge current bypass rapidly into the earth to facilitate the circuit breaking process and increase the stability of the load circuit. Thomson coil actuator (TCA) is a type of actuator that can function as an arc eliminator. The TCA has a simple structure and significantly rapid speed compared to the other types of actuators. In this paper, significant variables, which have a dominant effect on the performance of the TCA, are investigated in detail. Using these variables and an optimization algorithm, an optimal design strategy for the TCA is proposed in this research. The efficacy of the proposed optimal design strategy and the feasibility of the application of the designed TCA for a high power circuit breaker as the arc eliminators are validated through the experiment. -

This paper elaborates two novel proposed topologies (type-I and type-II) of the high step-up DC-DC converter using switched inductor and voltage multiplier cell. The advantages of these proposed topologies are the less voltage stress on semiconductor devices, low device count, high power conversion efficiency, high switch utilization factor and high diode utilization factor. We analyze the Type-II topologies operating principle and mathematical analysis in detail in continuous conduction mode. High-intensity discharge lamp for the automotive application can use the derived topologies. The proposed converters give better performance when compared to the existing types. Also, it is found that the proposed type-II converter has relatively higher voltage gain compared to the type-I converter. A 40 W, 12 V input voltage and 72 V output voltage has developed for the type-II converter and the performances are validated. -

This paper presents a novel scheme to estimate the rotor position of a single-phase hybrid switched reluctance motor (HSRM). The back-EMF generated by the permanent magnet (PM) field whose performance is motor parameter independent is adopted as an index to achieve the sensorless control. The differential value of back-EMF is calculated by hardware and processed by DSP to capture a fixed rotor position four times for every mechanical cycle. In addition, to accomplish the normal starting of HSRM, the determination method of the turn-off time position at the first electrical cycle is also proposed. In this way, a sensorless operation scheme with adjustable turn on/off angle can be achieved without substantial computation. The experimental verification using a prototype drive system is provided to demonstrate the viability of the proposed position estimation scheme. -

Wind energy conversion systems (WECS) which consist of wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and full-power converters have become widespread in the field of renewable power systems. Generally, conventional diode bridge rectifiers have used to obtain a constant DC bus voltage from output of PMSG based wind generator. In recent years, together advanced power electronics technology, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) rectifiers have used in WECS. PWM rectifiers are used in many applications thanks to their characteristics such as high power factor and low harmonic distortion. In general, L, LC and LCL-type filter configurations are used in these rectifiers. These filter configurations are not exactly compensate current and voltage harmonics. This study proposes a hybrid passive filter configuration for PWM rectifiers instead of existing filters. The performance of hybrid passive filter was tested via MATLAB/Simulink environment under various operational conditions and was compared with LCL filter structure. In addition, neuro-fuzzy controller (NFC) was preferred to increase the performance of PWM rectifier in DC bus voltage control against disturbances because of its robust and nonlinear structure. The study demonstrates that the hybrid passive filter configuration proposed in this study successfully compensates current and voltage harmonics, and improves total harmonic distortion and true power factor. -

The analysis and design process of the LCL filter with passive damping circuits for three-phase grid-connected inverter are presented based on the generalized model of LCL filter. Several types of the passive damping circuits in previous studies could be compared and analyzed by using the generalized model considering various design criteria of passive damping circuits. According to the analysis in this paper, a reasonable configuration of passive damping circuits for three-phase grid-connected inverters is proposed. The validity of the proposed design process is verified by informative simulation and experimental results. -

This paper describes the loss analysis based on load conditions of the air conditioning compressor motors using variable dc-link voltage. The losses of PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) should be analyzed by the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output of inverter. The harmonic loss by the PWM cannot consider that using the current source analysis of the inverter. In addition, when the voltage of dc-link is variable with the condition of variable speed and load conditions in motor, the losses of motor are also changeable, however it is hard to analyze those losses by only electromagnetic finite element method (FEM). Therefore, this paper proposes the analysis method considering the carrier frequency of the inverter and the varying state of the dc-link voltage through the FEM-control coupled analysis. Using proposed analysis method, additional core loss and eddy current loss of permanent magnet caused by PWM could be analyzed. Finally, the validity of the proposed analysis method is verified through the comparison the result of coupled analysis with experiment. -

When the characteristics of a linear induction motor (LIM) are analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA), it is desirable to set the voltage source as an input. If the voltage source is set as an input in FEA, the leakage inductance and primary resistance of the equivalent circuit must be entered by direct calculation, and the magnetizing inductance and secondary reaction effects are directly considered in FEA. Exact calculation is necessary because the primary winding resistance and leakage inductance directly entered will have a significant effect on the LIM output. Therefore, in this study, we accurately calculated the primary leakage inductance and analyzed the resulting LIM characteristics. We calculated the leakage inductance using an analytical equation and FEA, and we confirmed the accuracy by comparing the results with the value experimentally calculated using a manufactured model. We also analyzed the instrument performance and thrust of the LIM as a function of the difference in the leakage inductance. Finally, we present the conclusions on the precise analysis based on the calculation of the leakage inductance. -
A direct stator flux vector control scheme in discrete-time domain is proposed in this paper for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive to remove the proportional-integral (PI) controller from the direct torque control (DTC) scheme applied to IPMSM and to obtain faster dynamic response and lower torque ripple output. The output of speed outer loop is used as the desired torque angle instead of the desired torque in the proposed scheme. The desired stator flux vector in dq coordinate is calculated with a given amplitude. The state-space equations in discrete-time for IPMSM are established, the actual stator flux vector is estimated in deadbeat manner by a full-order state observer, and then the closed-loop control is achieved by the pole placement. The stator flux error vector is utilized to calculate the reference stator voltage vector. Extracting the angle position and amplitude from the estimated stator flux vector and estimating the output torque are eliminated for the direct feedback control of the stator flux vector. The proposed scheme is comparatively investigated with a PI-SVM DTC scheme by experiment results. Experimental results show the feasibility and advantages of the proposed control scheme.

Efficient operation of induction motor at light loads has been getting wide attention recently because the operating of induction motor at light loads occupies big portion of its operating regions in many applications such as environment friendly vehicle. As one of approaches to improve efficiency, Adaptive Maximum Torque Per Amp (Adaptive MTPA) control for induction motor drives has been proposed to achieve a desired torque with the minimum possible stator current. However, the Adaptive MTPA control was validated only at heavy load where, in general, control scheme tends to perform better than at light loads since the error in measurement of sensors is lower and signal to noise is better. Thus, although the performance of a control scheme is good at rated operating point, its performance at light load is somewhat in doubt in practice. This has led to considerable interest in efficiency of Adaptive MTPA control at light loads. This work experimentally demonstrates performance of Adaptive MTPA control at light loads regardless of rotor resistance variation, thus showing its good performance over all operating conditions.

This paper deals with the experimental evaluation on power loss of a double-side permanent magnet synchronous motor/generator (DPMSM/G) applied to a flywheel energy storage system (FESS). Power loss is one of the most important problems in the FESS, which supplies the electrical energy from the mechanical rotation energy, because the power loss decreases the efficiency of energy storage and conversion of capability FESS. In this paper, the power losses of coreless DPMSM/G are separated by the mechanical and rotor eddy current losses in each operating mode. Moreover, the rotor eddy current loss is calculated by the 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) method. The analysis result is validated by separating the power loss as electromagnetic loss and mechanical loss by a spin up/down test. -
This paper presents a novel concept of phase swapping to associate multiple flux weakening ranges to a non-salient PM machine without altering any hardware of the machine. The proposed concept enables a dual three-phase machine to be operated with different displacement angles between the two three-phase windings. Hence, different flux weakening ranges using winding switching can be accomplished by applying this concept. It was also demonstrated that the proposed concept can be utilized for the discrete step as well as continuous operation of the machines. Any application requiring a wide speed range operation of up to thirteen times the base speed can benefit from this proposed concept. Analytical, simulation, and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed concept.

In this paper, an improved predictive functional control (PFC) scheme for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control system is proposed, on account of the standard PFC method cannot provides a satisfying disturbance rejection performance in the case of strong disturbances. The PFC-based method is first introduced in the control design of speed loop, since the good tracking and robustness properties of the PFC heavily depend on the accuracy of the internal model of the plant. However, in orthodox design of prediction model based control method, disturbances are not considered in the prediction model as well as the control design. A minimum-order observer (MOO) is introduced to estimate the disturbances, which structure is simple and can be realized at a low computational load. This paper adopted the MOO to observe the load torque, and the observations are then fed back into PFC model to rebuild it when considering the influence of perturbation. Therefore, an improved PFC strategy with torque compensation, called the PFC+MOO method, is presented. The validity of the proposed method was tested via simulation and experiments. Excellent results were obtained with respect to the speed trajectory tracking, stability, and disturbance rejection. -

This paper introduces liquid crystal (LC) alignment and its electro-optical properties in the LC cells with silver nanowire (AgNW) networks. The AgNW network was used as an electrode of LC cell as a substitute for an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) film. LC alignment characteristics in the LC cell using AgNW networks, which have two different sheet resistances of$60{\Omega}/m^2$ and$80{\Omega}/m^2$ , were observed. The LC alignment characteristics including pretilt angle, LC alignment state, and thermal stability are similar irrespective of sheet resistance of AgNW network. However, twisted-nematic (TN)-LC cell normally operated when using AgNW network with sheet resistance of$80{\Omega}/m^2$ . Electrooptical properties of TN-LC cell exhibited competitive performance compared to those of TN-LC cell based on conventional ITO electrode, which allow new approaches to replace conventional ITO electrode in display technology. -

This paper contains results of the theoretical studies of the electrical breakdown properties in sulfur hexafluoride. Since the strong interaction of high-energy electrons with the polyatomic sulfur hexafluoride molecule causes their rapid deceleration to the lower energy of electron capture and dissociative attachment, the breakdown is only possible at relatively high field strengths. From the breakdown voltage curves, the effective yields that characterize secondary electron productions have been estimated. Values of the effective yields are found to be more consistent if they are derived from the experimentally determined values of the ionization coefficient and the breakdown voltages. In addition, simulations were performed using an one-dimensional Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision code. The obtained simulation results agree well with the available experimental data with an error margin of less than 10% over a wide range of pressures and the gap sizes. The differences between measurements and calculations can be attributed to the differences between simulation and experimental conditions. Simulation results are also compared with the theoretical predictions obtained by using expression that describes linear dependence of the breakdown voltage in sulfur hexafluoride on the pressure and the gap size product. -

$SF_6$ decomposition products can be used to detect partial discharge (PD), but the metal materials in a PD area can significantly affect$SF_6$ decomposition characteristics. Disregarding the effect of metal materials on such characteristics inevitably result in certain errors when using them to diagnose the internal insulation faults of gas-insulated switchgears. This paper investigates the influence regularity on the main stable decomposition components of$SF_6$ (namely$SO_2F_2$ and$SOF_2$ ) of the commonly metal materials uesd in GIS, such as aluminum (Al), copper (Cu) and stainless steel (SS). Firstly, an experimental platform is constructed to simulate$SF_6$ decomposition under a PD area, and the influence regularities of Al, Cu and SS on the concentration, formation rate and saturation time of$SO_2F_2$ and$SOF_2$ are obtained. Secondly, the influence mechanism of Al, Cu and SS are preliminary explored combined with the chemical activity of the metal materials. -
The ageing of XLPE cable insulation will lead to the accelerating accumulation of space charge, which will greatly affect the safe operation of the HVDC cable. In order to investigate the influence of different ageing modes on the space charge distribution of the HVDC cable, thermal stressed, electrical stressed and electro-thermal stressed endurance tests were carried out on the XLPE peelings. The tested XLPE peelings were obtained from 160kV HVDC cable insulation. The endurance tests were carried at thermal stress of 363K, electrical stress of 20kV/mm DC and a combination of both. The Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) method was used to measure the space charge distribution of the samples. The influences of ageing on the trap energy distribution were analyzed based on the isothermal relaxation theory and the decay characteristics of the space charge. The results showed that thermal ageing would help to improve the crystalline morphologies of the XLPE at the early stage. The total amount of space charge decreased compared to the ones before thermal ageing. The long term of electrical stress would result in the cleavage of polymer molecule chains which would intensify the accumulation of space charge and increase the density and depth of electron traps. With a combination of electrical and thermal stress, the injection and migration of space charge were more significant. Besides, the depth and density of electron traps increased rapidly with the increase of endurance time.

The robot proximity and tactile sensors can be categorized into two groups: grip sensors and safety sensors. They have different performance requirements. The safety sensor should have long proximity range and fast response in order to secure enough response time before colliding with ambient objects. As for the tactile sensing function, the safety sensor need to be fast and compliant to mitigate the impact from a collision. In order to meet these requirements, we proposed and demonstrated a compliant integrated safety sensor suitable to human-friendly robots. An ultrasonic proximity sensor and a piezoelectric tactile sensor made of PVDF films have been integrated in a compliant PDMS structure. The implemented sensor demonstrated the maximum proximity range of 35 cm. The directional tolerance for 30 cm detection range was about${\pm}15^{\circ}$ from the normal axis. The integrated PVDF tactile sensor was able to detect various impacts of up to 20 N in a controlled experimental setup. -

This paper presents design and specific absorption rate analysis of a 2.4 GHz wearable patch antenna on a conventional and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) ground planes, under normal and bent conditions. Wearable materials are used in the design of the antenna and EBG surfaces. A woven fabric (Zelt) is used as a conductive material and a 3 mm thicker Wash Cotton is used as a substrate. The dielectric constant and tangent loss of the substrate are 1.51 and 0.02 respectively. The volume of the proposed antenna is$113{\times}96.4{\times}3mm^3$ . The metamaterial surface is used as a high impedance surface which shields the body from the hazards of electromagnetic radiations to reduce the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). For on-body analysis a three layer model (containing skin, fats and muscles) of human arm is used. Antenna employing the EBG ground plane gives safe value of SAR (i.e. 1.77W/kg<2W/kg), when worn on human arm. This value is obtained using the safe limit of 2 W/kg, averaged over 10g of tissue, specified by the International Commission of Non Ionization Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The SAR is reduced by 83.82 % as compare to the conventional antenna (8.16 W/kg>2W/kg). The efficiency of the EBG based antenna is improved from 52 to 74 %, relative to the conventional counterpart. The proposed antenna can be used in wearable electronics and smart clothing. -
This paper discusses the near field characteristics of a dipole source located near conducting metallic walls from an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) point of view. An integral equation for a dipole source near a metallic wall is derived and solved by applying Galerkin's method of moments (MoM). The results show that in the regions outside the dipole source, total electric near fields decrease gradually in magnitude with an increasing field point from the dipole source. But in the regions inside the dipole source, total electric near fields decrease rapidly with a dipole position of
$h{\leq}0.3{\lambda}$ . For a dipole position of$h{\geq}0.7{\lambda}$ , the peaks and nulls of the total near electric field occur periodically in the regions inside the dipole source, and the fluctuation period is almost$0.5{\lambda}$ . The worst position for a receptor location is along the z-axis, and a range of a half-magnitude of the maximum near electric field in the principal H-plane is about two times broader than that of the principal E-plane. Experimental measurements are also presented to validate the theory. -
Recently, location systems using RFID technology have been studied in indoor environments. However, the existing techniques require high computational cost to compute the location of a moving object because they compare the location proximity of all reference tags and objects. In this paper, we propose an RFID based location positioning scheme using event filtering, which reduces the computation cost of calculating the locations of moving objects while maintaining the accuracy of location estimation. In addition, we propose an incremental location update policy to reduce the location update cost for moving objects. We also compare the proposed scheme with one of the localization schemes, LANDMARC using a performance evaluation. As a result, the proposed scheme outperforms LANDMARC in terms of the computational cost of location estimation. The proposed scheme also reduces the cost of location update by using the RFID-based update policy.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and Congestive heart failure (CHF) are increasingly widespread, costly, deadly diseases and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this study, we analyzed three statistical methods for automatic detection of AF and CHF based on the randomness, variability and complexity of the heart beat interval, which is RRI time series. Specifically, we used short RRI time series with 16 beats and employed the normalized root mean square of successive RR differences (RMSSD), the sample entropy and the Shannon entropy. The detection performance was analyzed using four large well documented databases, namely the MIT-BIH Atrial fibrillation (n=23), the MIT-BIH Normal Sinus Rhythm (n=18), the BIDMC Congestive Heart Failure (n=13) and the Congestive Heart Failure RRI databases (n=25). Using thresholds by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, we found that the normalized RMSSD provided the highest accuracy. The overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for AF and CHF were 0.8649, 0.9331 and 0.9104, respectively. Regarding CHF detection, the detection rate of CHF (NYHA III-IV) was 0.9113 while CHF (NYHA I-II) was 0.7312, which shows that the detection rate of CHF with higher severity is higher than that of CHF with lower severity. For the clinical 24 hour data (n=42), the overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for AF and CHF were 0.8809, 0.9406 and 0.9108, respectively, using normalized RMSSD. -

This paper presents a robust position controller for a one degree-of-freedom (DOF) mechanical system using only position measurement. In order to alleviate the performance degradation owing to various uncertainties, a two-stage design method is studied by employing a proportional integral observer (PIO). In the first stage, a baseline backstepping controller is designed for a nominal system without accounting for uncertainties. The PIO is developed for estimating both the velocity information for the backstepping controller and an equivalent input disturbance for a feedforward compensation using the estimated uncertainty. It is shown that the estimation errors with the proposed PIO can be made arbitrarily small in a finite time. If the system suffers from undesirable actuator nonlinearities, however, it might be necessary to estimate the velocity and the disturbance with different rates of convergence. The proposed method combines the predesigned backstepping controller and dual PIOs to reduce mechanical vibrations as well as steady-state errors. The performance of the proposed method is tested through comparative computer simulations and experiments using a laboratory prototype. -
This paper presents a novel face recognition algorithm based on the deep convolution neural network and key point detection jointed local binary pattern methodology to enhance the accuracy of face recognition. We firstly propose the modified face key feature point location detection method to enhance the traditional localization algorithm to better pre-process the original face images. We put forward the grey information and the color information with combination of a composite model of local information. Then, we optimize the multi-layer network structure deep learning algorithm using the Fisher criterion as reference to adjust the network structure more accurately. Furthermore, we modify the local binary pattern texture description operator and combine it with the neural network to overcome drawbacks that deep neural network could not learn to face image and the local characteristics. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm obtains stronger robustness and feasibility compared with the other state-of-the-art algorithms. The proposed algorithm also provides the novel paradigm for the application of deep learning in the field of face recognition which sets the milestone for further research.

This paper presents a voice-activity detection (VAD) method for sound sequences with various SNRs. For real-time VAD applications, it is inadequate to employ a post-processing for the removal of burst clippings from the VAD output decision. To tackle this problem, building on the bi-level hidden Markov model, for which a state layer is inserted into a typical hidden Markov model (HMM), we formulated a robust method for VAD not requiring any additional post-processing. In the method, a forward-inference-ratio test was devised to detect the speech endpoints and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) were used as the features. Our experiment results show that, regarding different SNRs, the performance of the proposed approach is more outstanding than those of the conventional methods. -
In this paper, an efficient short-time Fourier analysis method for the quasi-periodic signals is proposed via an optimal fixed-lag finite impulse response (FIR) smoother approach using a receding horizon scheme. In order to deal with time-varying Fourier coefficients (FCs) of quasi-periodic signals, a state space model including FCs as state variables is augmented with the variants of FCs. Through an optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother, FCs and their increments are estimated simultaneously and combined to produce final estimates. A lag size of the optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother is chosen to minimize the estimation error. Since the proposed estimation scheme carries out the correction process with the estimated variants of FCs, it is highly probable that the smaller estimation error is achieved compared with existing approaches not making use of such a process. It is shown through numerical simulation that the proposed scheme has better tracking ability for estimating time-varying FCs compared with existing ones.

A new digitized decoupled dual-axis micro dynamically tuned gyroscope with three equilibrium rings (TMDTG) is proposed which can eliminate the constant torque disturbance (CTD) caused by the double rotation frequency of a driving shaft with a micro dynamically tuned gyroscope with one equilibrium ring (MDTG). A mechanical and kinematic model of the TMDTG is theoretically analyzed and the structure parameters are optimized in ANSYS to demonstrate reliability. By adjusting the thickness of each equilibrium ring, the CTD can be eliminated. The digitized model of the TMDTG system is then simulated and examined using MATLAB. Finally, a digitized prototype based on FPGA is created. The gyroscope can be dynamically tuned by adjusting feedback voltage. Experimental results show the TMDTG has good performance with a scale factor of
$283LSB/^{\circ}/s$ in X-axis and$220LSB/^{\circ}/s$ in Y-axis, respectively. The scale factor non-linearity is 0.09% in X-axis and 0.13% in Y-axis. Results from analytical models, simulations, and experiments demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed TMDTG. -
In this paper, a device to analyze gait pattern was developed by using a 2-axis acceleration sensor attached to the foot. The 1st low-pass filter was adapted to limit the frequency band up to 5 Hz. An algorithm to detect the peak value exceeding the threshold voltage of an X-axis acceleration sensor and a Z-axis acceleration sensor was developed and normal and abnormal walking patterns were thus differentiated. Also, MCU and Bluetooth were combined to transfer the data to other MCUs to display on an LCD; the size of the device could then be reduced. The new algorithm and the device allowed the individual walking patterns to be easily measured at a low cost and with less restriction on activities compared to conventional multiple pressure sensors or motion camera system.

For many years, researchers in face description area have been representing and recognizing faces based on different methods that include subspace discriminant analysis, statistical learning and non-statistics based approach etc. But still automatic face recognition remains an interesting but challenging problem. This paper presents a novel and efficient face image representation method based on Optimized Local Ternary Pattern (OLTP) texture features. The face image is divided into several regions from which the OLTP texture feature distributions are extracted and concatenated into a feature vector that can act as face descriptor. The recognition is performed using nearest neighbor classification method with Chi-square distance as a similarity measure. Extensive experimental results on Yale B, ORL and AR face databases show that OLTP consistently performs much better than other well recognized texture models for face recognition.

The Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is a multi-hop wireless network consisting of mesh routers and clients, where the mesh routers have minimal mobility and form the backbone. The WMN is primarily designed to access outer network to mesh clients through backhaul gateways. As traffic converges on the gateways, traffic hotspots are likely to form in the neighborhood of the gateways. In this paper, we propose Congestion Aware Multi-path Routing (CAMR) protocol to tackle this problem. Upon congestion, CAMR divides the clients under a mesh STA into two groups and returns a different path for each group. The CAMR protocol triggers multi-path routing in such a manner that the packet reordering problem is avoided. Through simulations, we show that CAMR improves the performance of the WMN in terms of throughput, delay and packet drop ratio.

This paper proposes a new method using Wide Line Detector based statistical shape Feature (WLDF) to identify whether or not a tongue is cracked; a cracked tongue is one of the most frequently used visible features for diagnosis in traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We first detected a wide line in the tongue image, and then extracted WLDF, such as the maximum length of each detected region, and the ratio between maximum length and the area of the detected region. We trained a binary support vector machine (SVM) based on the WLDF to build a classifier for cracked tongues. We conducted an experiment based on our proposed scheme, using 196 samples of cracked tongues and 245 samples of non-cracked tongues. The results of the experiment indicate that the recognition accuracy of the proposed method is greater than 95%. In addition, we provide an analysis of the results of this experiment with different parameters, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

In this paper, we propose a novel motion field estimation algorithm for which a U-disparity map and forward-and-backward error removal are applied in a vehicular environment. Generally, a motion exists in an image obtained by a camera attached to a vehicle by vehicle movement; however, the obtained motion vector is inaccurate because of the surrounding environmental factors such as the illumination changes and vehicles shaking. It is, therefore, difficult to extract an accurate motion vector, especially on the road surface, due to the similarity of the adjacent-pixel values; therefore, the proposed algorithm first removes the road surface region in the obtained image by using a U-disparity map, and uses then the optical flow that represents the motion vector of the object in the remaining part of the image. The algorithm also uses a forward-backward error-removal technique to improve the motion-vector accuracy and a vehicle's movement is predicted through the application of the RANSAC (RANdom SAmple Consensus) to the previously obtained motion vectors, resulting in the generation of a motion field. Through experiment results, we show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to that of an existing algorithm.

A novel method of Skin lesion segmentation based on the combination of Texture and Neural Network is proposed in this paper. This paper combines the textures of different pixels in the skin images in order to increase the performance of lesion segmentation. For segmenting skin lesions, a two-step process is done. First, automatic border detection is performed to separate the lesion from the background skin. This begins by identifying the features that represent the lesion border clearly by the process of Texture analysis. In the second step, the obtained features are given as input towards the Recurrent Echo state neural networks in order to obtain the segmented skin lesion region. The proposed algorithm is trained and tested for 862 skin lesion images in order to evaluate the accuracy of segmentation. Overall accuracy of the proposed method is compared with existing algorithms. An average accuracy of 98.8% for segmenting skin lesion images has been obtained.

Nowadays, Power Line Communication (PLC) is gaining high attention from industry and electric supply companies for the services like demand response, demand side management and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The reliable services to consumers using PLC can be provided by utilizing an efficient PLC channel for which sophisticated channel modeling is very important. This paper presents characterization of a Low Voltage (LV) access network for Narrowband Power Line Communications (NB-PLC) using transmission line (TL) theory and a Simulink model. The TL theory analysis not only includes the constant parameters but frequency selectivity is also introduced in these parameters such as resistance, conductance and impedances. However, the proposed Simulink channel model offers an analysis and characterization of capacitive coupler, network impedance and channel transfer function for NB-PLC. Analysis of analytical and simulated results shows a close agreement of the channel transfer function. In the absence of a standardized NBPLC channel model, this research work can prove significant in improving the efficiency and accuracy of NB-PLC communication transceivers for Smart Grid communications.

An Electric Vehicle (EV) is operated with the electric energy of a battery in place of conventional fossil fuels. Thus, a suitable charging infrastructure must be provided to expand the use of electric vehicles. Because the battery of an EV must be charged to operate the EV, expanding the number of EVs will have a significant influence on the power supply and demand. Therefore, to maintain the balance of power supply and demand, it is important to be able to predict the numbers of charging EVs and monitor the events that occur in the distribution system. In this paper, we predict the hourly charging rate of electric vehicles using transformation matrix, which can describe all behaviors such as resting, charging, and driving of the EVs. Simulation with transformation matrix in a specific region provides statistical results using the Monte-Carlo Method. -

This paper describes a performance analysis of self-excited eddy current brake(SECB). Stator winding of SECB is connected by capacitor instead of voltage source, and SECB's braking force is generated by L-C resonance. SECB has wide range of driving and nonlinear inductance as well. Therefore, it is important to select capacitance based on the value of inductance. This paper discusses about the process of deciding capacitance and the change of resonance frequency based on the inductance change in each speed. Also the braking force was confirmed by the experimental model of SECB. -

Pantograph must be correctly attached to catenary to continuously supply stable power to railway vehicle, and the device used here is Auxiliary Air Compressor (ACM). The existing ACM used the DC motor that included commutator and brush. Since maintenance and repair by mechanical friction are essential for the DC motor, BLDC motor studies have been conducted to improve this. A three-phase BLDC motor does$120^{\circ}$ two-phase commutation through hall sensors in general. However, since hall sensor is vulnerable to heat and can run only when all three sensors work normally, sensorless control method has been studied to solve this. Using back EMF Zero Crossing Point (ZCP) detection method, this paper will introduce a stable switching sensing method that has a non-commutation area in a low speed zone. -
In this work, the current limiting and recovery characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with series connection of two coils were effectively improved by adding a third winding into the conventional flux-lock type SFCL with series connection of two coils. To confirm the contribution of the third winding to the current limiting and recovery characteristics of this type of the SFCL, short-circuit testing was carried out with consideration of the third winding, and the effect of the third winding on the current limiting and recovery characteristics was examined by comparative analysis of the amplitude of the limited fault current and the power burden of the high-TC superconducting (HTSC) element comprising the SFCL. Through the analysis of both the limiting impedance and the operational current as the main design parameter of the SFCL, the improved current limiting and recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL using the third winding could be verified.

Urban DC railways have played an important role in urban transportation, and railway operation and energy management have been emphasized to be important to achieve maximum efficiency from existing infrastructure. Fast, accurate DC railway power flow analysis is required to operate a DC railway efficiently, and this paper proposes a novel methodology to analyze the DC railway power network by implementing the participation factor (PF). The PF concept consists of a correlation between the vehicle and the substation, as explained using zones based on the position of the vehicles running on the route. Then, the DC railway powerflow is calculated using the PF concept. Finally, the usability of the proposed method was validated via case studies with actual railway operation data, and we discuss some of the advantages of the suggested methodology. -

Refineries and chemical plants with isolated power systems that have a limited power supply are more susceptible to voltage changes from disturbances compared to power systems connected with a power company. Furthermore, most loads in such cases are induction motor loads, and therefore, transient voltage characteristics when starting a high-capacity motor must be examined. In general, high-capacity motors are customized appropriately to the load performance curve by the manufacturer during the construction of an industrial plant. Subsequently, when complying with the voltage drop permitted by international standards during the design process, power supply equipment such as transformers and generators is overdesigned. Therefore, a novel analysis is necessary on standards for startup and constraint voltage drops, as well as on identifying the voltage drop limitations for starting high-capacity motors in refineries and chemical plants with isolated power systems. In this study, field tests on an industrial plant were conducted, and simulations modeled under conditions identical to those of the field test system were performed using the general-purpose program ETAP in order to compare the results.
