The Medical records (醫案) are very important materials in studying the developmental process of traditional Korean medicine. In this study, we investigated the medical records which are described in Naekyung-pyun(內景篇) of Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑), the most famous medical literature in Korean. There are 50 medical records in Naekyung-pyun and all of these records are cited from 12 Chinese medical literatures. The medical records were mainly cited from medical literatures written in Jin-Yuan(金元) and Ming(明) dynasty such as Yixuegangmu(醫學綱目) and Danxizanyao(丹溪纂要), although most records were written by medical scholars in Jin-Yuan(金元) dynasty, including Zhudanxi(朱丹溪) and Zhangzihe(張子和). Most of records were omitted and/or modified reflecting the Purpose of editors of Dongeuibogam. In addition, medical essay(醫論) was changed into medical record in some cases. The authors of the records used oral medication, acupuncture-moxa, psychological treatment and surgical manners. And in some cases of only having principal of treatment, the editors newly added the herbal prescription. The further study on medical records in Korean traditional medicinal literatures, would reveal the developmental progress of Korean medicine and inform more actual proof on medical condition.

Sasang constitution medicine is to do different treatment accordining to sasang constitution. Therefore, the constitution diagnosis in the Sasang constitution medicine is very important thing. The Process of Sasang constitution diagnosis Is difficult thing, because of consuming much time, making every effort. It is apt to be subjective tendency. So it need to make objective method. The QSCC II (Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification II ) have several problems- can't do diagnosis of Taeyangin, the accuracy rate of Sasang constitution diagnosis is not high (probably 60%), and so on. So, we need the new methods for the Sasang constitution Diagnosis. We will modify the problems of QSCC II. The First is the problems of the study execution process, not-multicenter study, a low data, the absent of Taeyangin cases. So, we have to do the multicenter study. The Second is the problems of a query and the method of statistics analysis. We will modify the problems of self-report Questionnaire. That is the problems of self-report Questionnaire, the lack of objective estimation( body type, personal appearance, etc), the absent of the estimation on typical or non-typical type constitution. We modified the problems of QSCC II. Therefore we made the new self-report Questionnaire for patients. We modified the problems of self-report Questionnaire. Therefore we made the new Constituion diagnosis Questionnaire for doctors. We develop the Questionnaire of two ways for the Sasang constitution Diagnosis. The one is the new self-report Questionnaire for patients. The other is the new Constitution diagnosis Questionnaire for doctors. We have to melt down the Questionnaire of two ways for the Sasang constitution Diagnosis.

It is over 100 years after Lee Je Ma has proposed concept of the Sasang constitutional medicine in his book DongEuiSooSeBoWon in 1894. As well known, this concept describes four constitution of Taeyang, Taeum, Soyang, and Soeum which are deals with physical body status and shape, desease and symptoms, personal characters, and organ function. In these days there are growing needs to elucidate this Sasang concept by the scientific manner, especially by biological tools. However there are no genes revealed related to the Sasang and moreover it is not easy to give a biological evidence for the Sasang constitution. Here are some considerations about the brief history of biological research on the Sasang constitution, and some prospectives of how to do to find genes of Sasang, and which to be done for what is about Sasang.

This study was written in order to help understanding of visible diagnosis of appearance(形). Visible diagnosis of appearance(形) is a very important factor of diagnosis and a first step of visible diagnosis. appearance(形) is closely connection with spirit(神), so is house of spirit(神). If we make a visible diagnosis of appearance(形), we know the prosperousness of energy and the relative seriousness of an illness. Spirit(神) is understood by appearances and movements of patient, and influenced by seasons, lands, human's relationship and the grade of age. By visible diagnosis of appearance(形), we can conclude existence or nonexistence of spirit(神), As comparing spirit(神) with appearance(形), we can decide good or bad prognoses. One man's own appearance(形) is determined by the five human type(五形人). There are very various points of changing form. As divided into principal groups, there are three main groups, that is, sky(天), earth(地) and man(人). The age and sex belong 治 the factor of sky(天), a direction and configuration of the ground(地形) belong to the factor of earth(地), the five human type(五形人) and white fatness(肥白) and black emaciation(黑瘦) belong to the factor of man(人).

The purpose of this study was to investigate the personality traits in three constitutional types, So-yang, So-eum and Tae-eum, using NEO-PI-R. The Questionnaire for QSCC II and NEO-PI-R Korean version were completed by 155 university students (108 males and 47 females), Analysis of difference among groups was conducted by ANOVA and followed by Scheffe test. Significant differences of personality among three constitutional types were revealed with respect to NEO-PI-R scales such as Extroversion and Openness in the big five factors and Anxiety, Angry ,Gregariousness, Assertiveness, Excitement Seeking, positive Emotion, Fantasy, Feeling, Action, Values, Modest and Deliberation in subtypesof the big five factors. The score of So-yang is significantly higher than that of so-eum in Extroversion, Openness, Angry, Gregariousness, Assertiveness, Excitement Seeking, Positive Emotion, Fantasy, Action and Values. The score of So-yang is significantly higher than that of Tae-eum in Extroversion, Openness, Gregariousness, Assertiveness, Excitement Seeking, Feeling, Action and Values. The score of So-eum is significantly higher than that of So-yang in Anxiety, Modest and Deliberation. The results Suggst that NEO-PI-R is helpful to determine constitution type, especially in the level of personality.

This study aims to define the relationship between brain and heart through several literatures about oriental medicine and the conclusions are as follows. Heart in oriental medicine is called as Sinmyeongjishim(神明之心) which has a close connection with Mind, Consciousness, Emotion, and Physiological instinct of Drain in modern medicine. According to Oriental medicine, Brain stores Wonsin(元神) as Heart stores mind(神). Heart is where mind rests whereas Brain is where mind reveals. The external evidences that prove the relationship of Heart and Mind are as follows: First, with ears, eyes, mouth, and nose the subject of cognition is recognized as Sinmyeongjishim(神明之心). Second, Bulin(不仁), which means decreased movement power and sensibility of limbs, proves that Sinmyeongjishim(神明之心) is involved with movement power and sensibility of limbs. The physiological evidences that prove the relationship of Heart and Mind are as follows; First, Heart as the operation of Sinmyeongjishim(神明之心) manages language. Second, Heart is related with Tongue. Third, Heart is linked to Ears through the ear hole. Fourth, Heart is a store of Mind. Fifth, the five viscera control emotional and psychological activities. The pathological evidence of the relationship of Heart and Mind is that the symptoms of heart disease which are related to Sinmyeongjishim(神明之心) are also related to the functions of Brain. Though Brain has a close connection with Heart in oriental medicine, it is recognized that there are distinctive symptoms of disease of Brain and Hyeolyookjishim(血肉之心) respectively. The relationship of Heart and Brain has been researched in this study, even though there are not enough written materials about oriental medicine. But the fact that the majority of Heart operation is deeply connected with Brain activities cannot be denied. Therefore the research of Heart should be done as well as Brain in the clinical study of Brain.

We will develop new sasang constitution diagnosis program. Therefore we need new golden standard for sasang constitution diagnosis. First, we investigated old records and journal of sasang constitutional medicine. Next, we consulted with 10 sasang constitutional experts about new golden standard for sasang constitution diagnosis. The result as follows : Golden standard for Taeyangin : It be made up 42 items(body type 6 items, external appearance 10 items, mental characteristics 16 items, physiology&pathologic symptoms 10 items). (2) Golden standard for Soyangin. It be made up 63 items(body type 7 items, external appearance 28 items, mental characteristics 17 items, physiology&pathologic symptoms 10 items). (3) Golden standard for Taeeumin : It be made up 71 items(body type 12 items, external appearance 19 items, mental characteristics 28 items, physiology&pathologic symptoms 12 items). (4) Golden standard for Soeumin : It be made up 54 items(body type 11 items, external appearance 13items, mental characteristics 21 items, physiology&pathologic symptoms 9 items).

This study carried out to develop the questionnaires that can measure objectively menstrual pain and determine pain index. First, we made questionnaires to measure menstrual pain by VAS, MVRS, VRS and question about trouble of daily life and so on. Then we investigated 1039 women's questionnaires who has the menses. Results are follow as : The questionnaires that can measure objectively menstrual apin and determine pain index was high a correlation coefficient therefore those were used Method of Menstrual Pain(here after MMP) calculation. Those were added and averaged. We examined correlation of calculated MMP and women's questionnaires who has the menses. MMP confidence was high as 99.42% comparatively so we thought MMP was appropriate as the measured method of menstrual pain.

This study was peformed to provide basic ideas as understanding and application for oriental medicinal cuisine (Yak-Sun). We investigated background, history of Yak-Sun in China. Also we conducted to investigated how to apply the theories of oriental medicine appropriately, which direction should be taken, and how it should be developed. To develop medicinal cuisine, it is necessary to grasp the theoretical system. And to develop medicinal cuisine for health enhancement, it is also required not only to consider constitutions but also to suggest the need of knowledge for moderation in terms of regimen along with the theory of oriental medicine. Also to develop medicinal cuisine according to the perspective of oriental medicinal theory, what should be taken into account is not only the understanding of the characteristics of food materials, but also the properties of them that the theory of oriental medicine. Lastly the scientific effect of the medicinal cuisine which is developed according to the oriental medicinal theory. And it is believed to be essential for the government to make effects to set a standard and laws to validate the medicinal effects and the process of assessment so that the systematic development can be encouraged, and to prepare guidance to food development for national health improvement.

To evaluate the anti-hyperlipidemic effect of Brassica rapa L. and its major compound, $\beta$-sitosterol, the present study was undertaken, hypercholesterolemia was induced in rats with poloxamer-407, Triton WR-1339, 30% corn oil high cholesterol diet. The ethanol extract of Brassica rapa L. significantly decreased total cholesterol (TC), phospholipid, triglyceride at doses of 200 mg/kg, and $\beta$-sitosterol significantly exerted anti-hyperlipidemic activity at a dose of 15 mg/kg in rats with hyperlipidemia. Taken together, Brassica rapa L. and $\beta$-sitosterol can be useful agents for the prevention or treatment of hyperlipidemia.

In order to testify the urate lowering effects of Daihwangmudan-tang(DMT), ICR mice were injected monosodium urate into the abdominal cavity and then DMT was administered on 2 and 4 days after Injection. Uric acid and triglyceride were measured as hematological indices of gout, and some genes related with this change were identified by ACP based GeneFishing PCR method and direct sequencing. From this experiment, DMT highly decreased the blood levels of uric acid and significantly suppressed and lowered the acute increment of triglyceride level. There were 11 differentially expressed genes(DEG) having relations with positive actions of DMT, and 4 major genes in the middle of DEGs were sequenced; Mfap 2, jagged 2, Hsd17b7, DkkI-1, These genes were supposed that several mechanisms through interleukin 1 and T-cell anergy, LDL cholesterol metabolism, wnt pathway would be related with the anti-inflammation effect against gout.

The purpose of this study is to examine the antioxidant activity in the germ cells of the extract of Corm fructus. The extract was studied for diphenyl-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, GC-1 cell viability by a modified MTT assay, the effects on $H_2O_2$-induced cytotoxicity by MTT assay and lipid perixidation by malondialdehyde (MDA) formation, respectively. The results showed that the extract scavenged DPPH radical with the IC50 being $200{\mu}g/mL$. The extract at concentrations of $10-500{\mu}g/ml$ showed dose-dependent in growth of GC-1 cell. $H_2O_2$-induced cytotoxicity (63.0%) was blocked by the extract (10, 50, 100, 250 and $500{\mu}g/ml$) concentration-dependently. Furthermore, the extract (50, 100 and $250{\mu}g/ml$) also displayed a dose-dependent reduction of MDA formation on $H_2O_2$-induced lipid peroxidation. In conclusion, the extract of Corm fructus has potent antioxidant activity.

This Study was designed to investigate the effects of Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Nodus (NRN) on the change of cerebral hemodynamics [regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), pial arterial diameter (PAD) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP)] in normal and cerebral ischemic rats. And, this study was designed to investigate the inhibition of lactate dehydrogenase activity in neuronal cells The results were as follows NRN significantly increased rCBF and PAD in a dose-dependent manner, and NRN increased MABP in a dose-dependent manner. This results suggested that NRN significantly increased rCBF by dilating PAD. Both rCBF and PAD were significantly and stably increased by NRN (10 mg/kg, i.p.) during the period of cerebral reperfusion, which contrasted with the findings of rapid and marked increase in control group. NRN significantly inhibited lactate dehydrogenase activity in neuronal cells. This results suggested that NRN prevented the neuronal death. It is suggested that NRN had an anti-ischemic effect through the improvement of cerebral hemodynamics and inhibitive effect on the brain damage.

Silymarin has been known to exert anti-tumoral activity in Korea. However, its molecular mechanism of action is not understood. In this study, we found that silymarin induced apoptosis in androgen-independent prostate cancer DU145 cells as confirmed by DNA fragmentation. Our data demonstrated that silymarin-induced apoptotic cell death was accompanied by activation of caspase-3 and subsequent cleavages of its substrates, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Also, silymarin-induced apoptotic mechanism of DU145 cells involved the induction of Par-4 protein expression. Taken together, these results suggest that silymarin induces the activation of caspase-3, degradation of PARP, increase of Par-4 expression, and eventually leads to apoptotic cell death.

A mechanism of hair cell damage caused by noise and ototoxic agents is mediated through generation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). It is known that most of animals have defense systems to protect against ROS, and the cochlea of inner ear in animals also has ROS defense systems including several antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione (GSH), which efficiently detoxifying ROS generated under normal condition. Steamed roots of Rehmannia glutinosa have been traditionally used in Oriental medicine for the treatment of auditory disease such as tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing loss as well as inflammatory diseases, hectic fever, night sweat, and headache. In the present study, we showed that the ethanol extract from steamed roots of R. giutinosa (ESRG) increased the antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, GPX, and GR activities and GSH level in HEI-OC1 auditory cells. This extract itself did not show any significant cytotoxicity up to $50{\mu}g/ml$. Our results further support the view that ESRG is promising sources of potential antioxidants. Future studies will be aimed at investigating the effects of ESRG on the regulation of cellular mechanisms and isolating and identifying the substances responsible for the regulation of antioxidant enzyme system from the plant extracts.

Mori Cortex Radicis is distributed in Northwestern China, northern Asia, northern Europe, North America, and Korea. This extracts drops sugar in bloods and inhibits cyclic AMP phophodiesterase. In this study, we investigated whether Mori Cortex Radicis would cause apoptotic death of A549 lung cancer cells. To examine the apoptotic effect of Mori Cortex Radicis, cytotoxicity assay, DNA fragmentation analysis, caspase-3 activity assay, and Western blotting for caspase-3, caspase-9 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and cytochrome c were performed. Treatment of cells with Mori Cortex Radicis was shown to induce cell death in a dose-dependent manner. DNA fragmentation was made in response to Mori Cortex Radicis. The active fragments of caspase-3, caspase-9 and PARP were almost completely induced and cytochrome c was released following exposure to Mori Cortex Radicis. To elucidate the apoptotic mechanisms, RT-PCR and Western blot analyses for the expression of Bcl-2, Bu and Cox-2 were carried out. Treatment with Mori Cortex Radicis was expressed the reduction of Bcl-2 and Cox-2 and the induction of Bax. Especially p21 and p53 were increased prior to untreated control, while cyclin E and cyclin D1 decreased in the cytosol. These results suggest that the effect Mori Cortex Radicis is associated with the cell cycle arrest and pro-apoptotic cell death in A549 lung cancer cells.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), such as benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P), are toxic environmental contaminants known to enhance oxidative stress, production of pro-inflammatory and inflammatory cytokines. The present study was designed in order to determine whether wild ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) protect PAH-induced oxidative stress and inflammation. B(a)P (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) treatment increased the distribution of immunoreactive cells for tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-\alpha$ and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 in peri-portal triad region and immunoreaction was shown in the cytoplasm of macrophage. Pre-treatment with wild ginseng significantly decreased immune responses in the rats treated with B(a)p. The rats given 50 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks before B(a)P treatment had 1.39-fold and 1.5-fold inhibition of $TNF-\alpha$ and COX-2 positive reaction, respectively. Wild ginseng extract alone had no effect on the distributional changes. The SOD activity as scavenger enzymes after wild ginseng administration dose-dependantly increased compared with butylated hydroxytoluene, a general radical scavenger. These data likely indicate that wild ginseng extract may act as inflammatory regulator in conjunction with inhibition of oxidant dependent metabolic activation in environmental contaminants-induced hepatic inflammation.

This study was undertaken to define the effect of DaeSiHo-Tang extract on the hypertension in spontaneous hypertensive rat and norepinephrine-induced arterial contraction in rabbit. Systolic blood pressure and blood velocity were significantly attenuated by administration of DaeSiHo-Tang extract. but blood flow and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system unaffected by DaeSiHo-Tang extract. The relaxation effect of DaeSiHo-Tang extract was dependent on the presence of endothelium, showing that DaeSiHo-Tang extract-induced relaxation was not observed in the strips without endothelium. The endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by DaeSiHo-Tang extract was decreased by the pretreatment of $N{\omega}$-nitro-L-arginine or methylene blue, but it was not observed in the strips pretreated with indomethacin or tetraethylammonium chloride. When $Ca^{2+}$ was applied, the strips which were contracted by norepinephrine in a $Ca^{2+}$-free solution, arterial contraction was increased. But pre-treatment of DaeSiHo-Tang extract inhibited contractile response to $Ca^{2+}$. These results indicate that antihypertensive effect of DaeSiHo-Tang extract is due to descend arterial resistance by the arterial relaxation through the formation of nitric oxide in the vascular endothelial cells.

Antioxidative activities of catechin from green tea extracts were examined by the methods of 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) electron donating ability, hydroxy scavenging activity and the inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase activity. The resulted demonstrated the fact that Catechin one (containing Green tea extracts plus catechin 51%) of green tea extracts product showed at 65.5% in electron donating activity on the DPPH. The electron donating ability on the DPPH of Catechin one was increased to 10% than purified catechin. Catechin one showed the activity at 64.5% in scavenging activity using hydroxy radical method. To the Catechin one provided to increase the hydroxy scavenging activity up to 3 fold. Inhibitory effects of the catechin one measured with xanthine oxidase method was 6.5%. Although the antioxidative activity of catechin (98% purified) was lower than that of Catechin one (containing Green tea extracts plus catechin 51%) in same catechin concentrations ($5{\mu}g$, respectively). Therefore, we may suggest that Catechin one can be used as a functional food additive possessing the potent antioxidative activity.

The genetic effects of restraint stress challenge on HPA axis and the therapeutic effect of Boshimgeonbi-tang on the stress were studied with cDNA microarray analyses, RT-PCR on hypothalamus using an immobilization-stress mice as an animal model. Male CD-1 mice were restrained in a tightly fitted and ventilated vinyl holder for 2hrs once a day, and this challenge was repeated for seven· consecutive days. In the change of body weight it showed that the Boshimgeonbi-tang is effected recovery on weight loss caused by the immobilization-stress. Seven days later, total RNA was extracted from the organs of the mouse, body-labeled with $CyDye^{TM}$ fluorescence dyes and then hybridized to CDNA microarray chip. Scanning and analyzing the array slides were carried out using GenePix4000 series scanner and GenePix $Pro^{TM}$ analyzing program, respectively. The expression profiles of 109 genes out of 6000 genes on the chip were significantly modulated in hypothalamus by the immobilization stress. Energy metabolism-, lipid metabolism-, apoptosis-, stress protein, transcriptional factor, and signal transduction-related genes were transcriptionally activated whereas DNA repair-, protein biosysthesis-, and structure integrity-related genes were down-regulated in hypothalamus. The 58 genes were up-regulated by the mRNA expression folds of 1.5 to 7.9. and the 51 genes were down-regulated by 1.5 - 5.5 fold. The 11 genes among them were selected to confirm the expression profiles by RT-PCR. The mRNA expression levels of Tnfrsf1a (apoptosis), Calm2 (cell cycle), Bag3 (apoptosis), Ogg1 (DNA repair), Aatk (apoptosis), Dffa (apoptosis), Fkbp5 (protein folding) were restored to the normal one by the treatment of Boshimgeonbi-tang.

Scopoletin (6-methoxy-7-hydrorycournarin) is a phenolic coumarin and a member of the phytoalexins. In this study we investigated whether scopoletin causes apoptosis in human hepatoma HepG2 cells and, if so, by what mechanisms. We report that scopoletin induced apoptosis as confirmed by a chromatin condensation. The signal cascade acivated by scopoletin included the activation of caspase-3 as evidenced by increased pretense activity. Activation of caspase-3 resulted in the cleavage of 116 kDa poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) to 85 kDa cleavage product in a dose-dependent fashion. Also, scopoletin-induced apoptotic mechanism of HepG2 cells involved the generation of hydrogen peroxide. Taken together, these results suggest that scopgletin induces hydrogen peroxide generation, which, in turn, causes activation of caspase-3, degradation of PARP, and eventually leads to apoptotic cell death in HepG2 cells.

The study was designed to investigate the effects of Leonuri herba extract (LHE) on the change of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in normal rats, and further to determine the mechanism of action of LHE. The results in normal rats were as follows, LHE significantly increased rCBF in a dose-dependent manner, and MABP did not change in a dose-dependent manner. This results were suggested that LHE significantly increased rCBF by dilating pial arterial diameter. The LHE-induced increase in rCBF was significantly inhibited by Pretreatment with indomethacin(1 mg/kg, i.p.), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, and was significantly inhibited by methylene blue($10{\mu}g/kg$, i.p.), an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase. The LHE-induced MABP did not change by pretreatment with indomethacin but was significantly inhibited by methylene blue. This results were suggested that the mechanism of LHE was mediated by cyclooxygenase.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Bopaewon-tang (BT) on allergic reaction. In the present study, we examined the effect of BT on type 1 and type tV allergic reaction. BT (500 mg/kg) did not affect the systemic anaphylaxis induced by compound 48180 and the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis induced by anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP)-IgE and DNP-human serum albumin in vivo. Also, BT did not affect the release of histamine from peritoneal mast cells in rats. In addition, BT did not affect the permeability of evans blue into peritoneal cavity, but inhibited the writhing syndrome induced by acetic acid. BT inhibited the delayed type hypersensitivity induced by SRBC and the contact dermatitis induced by dinitrofluorobenzene. These results indicate that BT may be useful for the prevention and treatment of type IV allergy related disease.

The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of Chaenomelis Fructus Herba Chelidonii Clematis Florida Thunb mixed water extract on the inflammatory edema induced by Found's complete adjuvant and on different blood volume, and then to demonstrate its efficiencies as well as its safety. We injected Chaenomelis Fructus Herba Chelidonii Clematis Florida Thunb mixed water extract on the inflammatory edema induced by Found's complete adjuvant once daily at the same time for a week, then observed the paw-edema, the counts of the blood WBC, Serum total protein, Serum total bilirrubin, SGOT and SGPT The result obtained is as follows : Inflammatory edema on the right plantar in both sample groups showed a significant reduce compared with that in the control group. The counts of WBC in both sample groups showed a significant decrease compared with that in the control group. The volume of serum total protein in the Sample A group showed a significant decrease compared with that in the control group. The volume of serum total bilirrubin, GOT and GPT in both sample groups was not changed compared with that in the control group. As a result of this experiment, it is concluded that Chaenomelis Fructus Herba Chelidonii Clematis Florida Thunb mixed water extract showed that therapeutic effect on the anti-inflammation on arthritis; otherwise it showed non-toxic effect on the liver function.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are widely implicated in the aging process and age-related diseases. The present study was carried out to investigate scavenging activities of Junglans sinensis extract and its subfraction using fluorescent probes, DCF-DA, DAF-2 and DHR 123. Jungians sinensis was washed and crushed. The crushed Junglans sinensis was extracted 3times, each time with 3 volumes of methyl alcohol at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The extract was filtered and evaporated under a reduced pressure using a rotary evaporator to yield 16 g. Scavenging activities of $ONOO^-$ was measured by Kooy' method and ROS was measured by DCFDA assay. Junglans sinensis had the marked scavenging activites of $ONOO^-$, NO and $O_2^-$. Junglans sinensis scavenged $ONOO^-$ through electron donation and dose-dependently inhibited the nitration of bovine serum albumin by $ONOO^-$. Junglans sinensis also had ROS scavenging activity. Especially, ethylacetate fraction of Junglans sinensis showed the most effective scavenging activities for ROS and RNS. These results suggest that Junglans sinensis might be developed as an effective ROS and RNS scavenger Therefore, Junglans sinensis might be used as a preventive agent for the aging and relevant to aging of illness.

This study was undertaken to define the effect of SoPung-Tang extract on hypertension in spontaneous hypertensive rat and norepinephrine- induced arterial contraction in rabbit. In order to investigate the effect of SoPung-Tang extract on contracted rabbit carotid arterial strips, transverse strips with intact or damaged endothelium were used for the experiment using organ bath. To analyze the mechanism of SoPung-Tang extract-induced relaxation, SoPung-Tang extract infused into contracted arterial strips induced by norepinephrine after treatment of indomethacin, Nu-nitro-L-arginine, methylene blue or tetraethylammonium chloride. Blood pressure was significantly decreased five days after administration of SoPung-Tang extract. SoPung-Tang extract relax arterial strip with endothelium contracted by norepinephrine, but in the strips without endothelium, SoPung-Tang extract- induced relaxation was significantly inhibited. SoPung-Tang relax arterial strip contracted by norepinephrine, but in the strips contracted by high $K^+$, SoPung-Tang extract-induced relaxation was significantly inhibited. The endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by SoPung-Tang extract was decreased by the pre-treatment of $N{\omega}$-nitro-L-arginine or methylene blue, but it was not observed in the strips pre-treated with indomethacin or tetraethylammonium chloride. When $Ca^{2+}$ was applied, the strips which were contracted by norepinephrine in a $Ca^{2+}$-free solution, arterial contraction was increased. But pre-treatment of SoPung-Tang extract inhibited contractile response to $Ca^{2+}$. We suggest that SoPung-Tang could be applied effectively for hypertension and may suppress influx of extra-cellular $Ca^{2+}$ through the formation of nitric oxide in the vascular endothelial cells.

Hyperlipidemia is caused by high dietary intake of cholesterol and saturated fats, and is known as a major risk factor for atherosclerosis. In the oriental medicine, Cheunggansoyo-san (CGSYS) has been used for supplementing hematopoietic function and for treating cardiovascular disorders. In the present study, CGSYS was administered into hyperlipidemic mice. Increases in body weight and cholesterol levels induced by hyperlipidemic diets for 6 weeks were significantly inhibited by CGSYS administration. Serum levels of glucose, triglyceride, SGOT, and SGPT values were all decreased by CGSYS treatment compared with hyperlipidemic dietary mice. Moreover, CGSYS decreased LDL-cholesterol, but increased HDL-cholesterol levels in hyperlipidemic mice. Thus, the present results suggest that CGSYS appears to De effective for down-regulating risk factors of hyperlipidemia.

To develop novel anti-leukemic medicine, we have prepared a Korean traditional medicine, named Hang-baek-Tang, which is composed of 8 kinds of anti-leukemic medicinal plants. The water extracts was examined anti-leukemic activity using the human leukemia cell line, HL-60 cells. HL-60 cells showed the growth inhibition and several apoptotic features, including DNA ladders, morphological changes, by treatment of the cells with Hang-Daek-Tang. We have observed that Hang-baek-Tang induced the activation of caspase-3, caspase-8 and caspase-9. Further molecular analysis demonstrated that Hang-baek-Tang induced cleavage of PARP and increase of hypodiploid (Sub-G1) population in flow cytometric analysis. These results indicate that Hang-baek-Tang has been considered to exert anti-leukemic activity through the procaspase-3 activation pathway.

An oriental medicinal drugs Jahageo (JHG, Hominis placenta) were examined to determine its effects on the responsiveness of central nervous system neurons after injury. We found that JHG was involved in neurite outgrowth of DRG sensory axons. JHG treatment also increased expression of axonal growth-associated protein GAP-43 in DRG sensory neurons after sciatic nerve injury and in the injured spinal cord. JHG treatment during the spinal cord injury increased induction levels of cell division cycle 2 (Cdc2) protein in DRG as well as in the spinal cord. Histochemical investigation showed that induced Cdc2 in the injured spinal cord was found in non-neuronal cells. These results suggest that JHG regulates activities of non-neuronal cells such as oligodendrocyte and astrocyte in responses to spinal cord injury and protects neuronal responsiveness after axonal damage.

Gamimahaenggamsuk-tang (GMHGST) is used for treatment of inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here, regulatory activity of GMHGST on RA-mediated inflammatory responses was investigated in cultured human fiDroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS), Levels of mRNAs encoding for inflammatory cytokines such as $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 and IL-8 and NOS-II enzyme, which had been induced by $TNF-{\alpha}$ and $IL-1{\beta}$ cotreatment, were decreased to the similar levels as those in cells treated with anti-inflammatory agent MTX. mRNA expressions of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) as well as intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM) were also downregulated by increasing doses of GMHGST in activated FLS. Moreover, GMHGST appeared to protect cells by decreasing NO levels, and inhibited cell proliferation which had been induced by inflammatory stimulation by $TNF-{\alpha}$ and IL-1. These results suggest that GMHGST is effective as an inhibitory agent for regulating inflammatory responses in activated FLS.

The effects of chloroform extract from Lepidolaena tayiorii (L. tayiorii) on antifungal activity were investigated. The crude chloroform extract of L. tayiorii inhibited the growth of the Gram positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis ATCC 19659, (5 mm inhibition zone at $150{\mu}g/disc$) and the dermatophytic fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 28185, (6 mm inhibition zone at $150{\mu}g/disc$), and cytotoxic to P388 murine leukaemia cells ATCC CCL 46 P388D1, ($IC_{50}\;405.0{\mu}g/mL\;at\;150{\mu}g$/disc) and cytotoxic to BSC monkey kidney cells (@ 5 mg/mL, $150{\mu}g/disc;$ +++: 100% activity). We suppose that this crude chloroform extract of L. tayiorii is the strong antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities.

Gamipaidok-san(GPDS) is the Hyungbangpaidok-san prescription fortified with the additional ingredients known to be effective for dermatitis. So it has been used for atopic dermatitis in the clinic work actually. In this study, we investigated the effects of GPDS on in vitro and in vivo anti-allergic effect on RBL-2H3 rat basophilic leukemia Cells and on IgE-induced passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in mice. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of GPDS in RAW 264.7 cells was investigated. GPDS potently inhibited $\beta$-hexosaminidase release from RBL-2H3 and the IgE-mediated PCA reaction in mice. GPDS inhibited LPS-induced NO and PGE2 production in a dose-dependent manner Furthermore, It also inhibited inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression in RAW 264.7 cells, and the activation of the transcription factor, NF-kB, in nuclear fraction. The antiallergic action of GPDS may originate from anti-inflammatory activities, and can improve the inflammation caused by allergies.

Oriental medicinal drugs have a broad spectrum of clinical use for the cure of nervous system diseases including brain ischemic damages or neuropathies. Yet, specific drugs or drug components used in the oriental medicine in relation to none fiber regeneration are not known. In the present study, possible growth promoting effects of oriental medicinal drugs were investigated in the injured sciatic nerve system in the rat. By immunofluorescence staining, we found that Jahageo (JHG, Hominis placenta) increased Induction levels of axonal growth associated protein GAP-43 in the rat sciatic none. Small growth promoting activity was found in Golsebo (GSB, Drynariae rhizoma) and Baikhasuo (BHSO, Polygoni multiflori radix) drugs. JHG also increased cell cycle protein Cdc2 levels in the injured area of the sciatic nerves. Immunofluorescence staining indicated that induced Cdc2 protein was mostly localized in the Schwann cells in the injury area, implying that JHG activity might be related to increased Schwann cell proliferation during axonal regeneration. Moreover, levels of phospho-extracellular signal-regulated (ERK) pathway in the injured neNes were elevated by JHG treatment while levels of total ERK were unaltered. In vivo measurement of axonal regeneration using retrograde tracer showed that JHG, GSB and BHSO significantly enhanced Dil-labeled regenerating motor neurons compared with saline control. The present data suggest that oriental medicinal drugs such as JHG, GSB, and BHSO may be a useful target for developing specific drugs of axonal regeneration.

The pulse diagnosis is an important and universal method in Oriental medicine. Nevertheless, because of characteristic that depends on subjective sense of Oriental medicine doctor (OMD), it is not recognized by objective basis. The Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine(KIOM) and Daeyo Medi. Co. Ltd. developed the 3-D Mac using arrey piezoresistive sensors and multi-axial robot. 133 healthy subjects participated in this study, 75 males and 58 females, between 20 and 70 years of age. All subjects were relaxed in a supine position on a comfortable chair for twenty minutes before the measurement was taken. The measured position is the radial artery of subject's left wrist and the position is called Chon, Kwan and Chuck in Oriental medicine. To detect floating and sinking pulse, we established coefficient of floating and sinking(CFS). CFS means relative position of maximum pulse pressure in PH curve. The lower CFS value means that the pulse has floating tendency. There was significant diffence between CFS and diagnosis of floating-sinking pulse by OMD(p=0.020). CFS value of over 40's group was significantly larger than those of 20's and 30's(p=0.000). There was no significant difference between male and female(p=0.061).

There are few topic about a pulmonary thromboembolism(PTE) especially in Korean medical research. This case report is dealt with a rare situation that a PTE and a lacunar infarction are complicated in one patient. They have a similarity in that both are caused by the thrombosis. The former is the thrombosis in lung and the latter is the cerebral infarcion within the territory of a single perforating artery Recently the attack rate of PTE somewhat grow because of the development of medicine such as the increasing use of indwelling catheters, trauma or surgery of pelvis and lower extrimity, major surgery especially in senior, the use of estrogen containing compounds, cerebrovascular disease, obesity, etc. A 70 year-old lady was stroked by the cerebral infarction and has been getting rehabilitating therapy. She had the sudden onset of dyspnea, chest pain and those symptoms looked like a myocardial infarction. But she was diagnosed as PTE by ventilation perfusion lung scan. We cured her with the integrated therapy of Korean and Western medicine.

Gastric cancer is the most common disease which is the highest genetic rate, chemotherapy is the only known way to treat, especially advanced gastric cancer. Although, it is the remedy, the harmful side-effects are an obstacle of the sustaining treatment and negative effect on immunologic ability of patients prologed. Consequently, it is surely necessary that effective control for sequele of anti-cancer treatment, and remedy which can improve the quality of patients life. 1, the writer, medicate patients, diagnose as gastric cancer in 4th stage, with Sohap-hyangwon and Chungwoolhyadamjen who complained of pain in sequele of anti-cancer treatment. The size of the metastastic liver tumor is decreasing in patients and the immunologic abilities are maintaining stable. This clinical cases are shown that the oriental medical care in long-term can improve the quality of life of the patients who has sequele of anti-cancer treatment.

We treated a 51 year-old female patient of neurogenic bladder. The patient complained of urinary incontinence, lack of urine sense, loss of right leg sense etc. The symptoms developed right after spinal stenosis surgery. The symptoms didn't show any improvement continually. But after admission and treatment in our hospital, symptoms were improved from severe to mild and the score of Assesment of Bladder function got better. We continued to prescribe the herbal medicine over 8 weeks and could observe that symptoms were improved. This result suggests that oriental medical therapy is useful enough to treat the neurogenic bladder. Therefore further study of the approach and application of this treatment for neurogenic bladder would be necessary.

In this case, it is considered that the cause of the lower limb Flaccidity-syndrome is the peripheral neuropathy accompanied with inflammation and in oriental medicine, it is understood that the factors such as lung fluid consumption caused by heat-evil, wetness-heat evil cause the lower limb Flaccidity-syndrome. Because the peripheral neuropathy is regarded as a neuropathy with a series of inflammation reaction producing inflammatory neuropeptides such as substance P, prostaglandin ect., in western medicine, nonsteroidal antiinflammation drug;NASID, lidocaine, capsaicine are prescribed to control this neuropathy. In the view of treatment of the lower limb weakness, Wooseul-tangkami is used to remove the wetness-heat evil and we had a electronic acupuncture on the Yangmyung channel(陽明經) selected in The Yellow Emperor's of internal Medicine and also on Panggwang channel(膀胱經) considered as painful lesion. We experineced a case of the lower limb Flaccidity-syndrome diagnosed as the peripheral neuropathy the patient was treated by wooseul-tangkami, a acupuncture on Yangmyung channel and also Panggwang channel and had a significant improvement in gait ability and the range of motion.

Paraquat is a nonselective contact herbicide that may induced damage to many organs poisoned with it. But there is no effective treatment modality. This report is about one case of treatment for paraquat poisoning. The patient was hospitalized of Wonkwang university Gwangju Oriental Medical Hospital at the department of Internal Medicine. For 26 days of hospitalization period, the authors supplied gamdutanggami(甘豆湯加味), which consists of Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草), Semen Glycine(黑豆), burned powder of Rhizoma rhei(大黃沙炭末), Succus phyllostachyos(竹瀝) and chinese ink(墨汁), decoction of Galla chinensis(五倍子) and Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草), and fluid. And then he showed improvement of condition and returned to a daily life. This report has a limitation for proof of oriental medicine remedial value. Because this is the only one case of a small quantity of paraquat poisoning patient less than 20cc. Actually there are a few paper regarding the Oriental medicine remedial value in paraquat poisoning patient, so we hope luther study and report ensue.

Dysphagia is Swallowing disorder characterized by difficulty in oral preparation for the swallow or in moving material from the mouth to the stomach. Dysphagia is the one of the most symptom of CVA and predisposes to medical complications such as aspiration pneumonia in poststroke patients. This study was designed to report the clinical effects of acupuncture for dysphagia on a patient with Wallenberg's syndrome. 8 acupoint were used and videofluoroscopic evaluation were performed. According to the above evaluation, 'Oral transit time' decreased within 1.5 sec and 'Coating of pharyngeal wall after swallow' were disappeared. The above results suggest that acupuncture is beneficial for dysphagia.

This is a clinical report of an aspect Soyangyangmyunghabbyung patient with acute pyelonephritis. One patient who had headache, fever, chilling sign, nausea and constipation was treat. The symptoms have relation to Soyangyangmyunghabbyung(少陽陽明合病) of Yugkyeung(六經) thee. On the basis of this thee, we performed the treatment on acute pyelonephritis. We treated her with Herbal medicine(Daeshihotanggami, Bojungikgitanggami) and acupuncture(Ganjeonggyeok). As the result of our treatment, we were experiencef an improved case of acute pyelonephritis patient.

This study was designed to report the clinical effects of oriental medical therapy on a patient of jaundice with a toxic hepatitis and liver failure. Herbal medication, acupuncture and cupping therapy were applied to the patient for 18 weeks. Symptoms were checked repeatedly, and clinicopathologic test(such as total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, AST, ALT ect.) were done to evaluate improvement. After 18 weeks treatment with oriental medical therapy, most symptoms disappeared or improved. Clinicopathologic examinations showed improvement. The above results that oriental medical therapy is beneficial for the patient with jaundice.

Delirium is a set of symptoms that includes Disturbance of consciousness, attention, cognition, sleep-wake cycle. It usually appears as a disease progresses. Also it can be considered as one of byun-jo(煩躁)'s symptoms because it shows similar symptom and progress to byun-jo(煩躁). One patient was admitted who was suffering delirium, restlessness, chest discomfort, disorientation. The patient was diagnosed as delirium and byun-jo that was caused by heat in the heart and stomach, and was treated with Chungul-san(淸鬱散). In the course of treatment, symptoms improved gradually. Resu suggest that Chungul-san(淸鬱散) is effective on delirium, byun-jo caused by heat in stomach.
