  • In this paper, we present an efficient hardware architecture for the H.263 video codec and its VLSI implementation. This architecture is based on the unified interface by which internal hardware engines and an internal RISC processor are connected one another. The unified interface enables the modular design of internal blocks, efficient hardware/software partitioning, and pipelined paralled operations. The developed VLSI supports the H.263 version 2 profile 3 @ level 10, and moreover, both the control protocol H.245 and the multiplexing protocol H.223. Therefore, it can be used for the complete ITU-T H.324 or 3GPP 3G 324M multimedia processor with the help of an external audio codec. Simultaneous encoding and decoding of QCIF format images at a rate greater than 15 frames per second is achieved at 40 MHz clock frequency.

  • The 360 VR video has a format of a stereoscopic shape such as an isometric shape or a cubic shape or a cubic shape. Although these formats have different characteristics, they have in common that the resolution is higher than that of a normal 2D video. Therefore, it takes much longer time to perform coding/decoding on 360 VR video than 2D Video, so parallel processing techniques are essential when it comes to coding 360 VR video. HEVC, the state of art 2D video codec, uses Wavefront Parallel Processing (WPP) technology as a standard for parallelization. This technique is optimized for 2D videos and does not show optimal performance when used in 3D videos. Therefore, a suitable method for WPP is required for 3D video. In this paper, we propose WPP coding/decoding method which improves WPP performance on cube map format 3D video. The experiment was applied to the HEVC reference software HM 12.0. The experimental results show that there is no significant loss of PSNR compared with the existing WPP, and the coding complexity of 15% to 20% is further reduced. The proposed method is expected to be included in the future 3D VR video codecs.

  • Tn this paper we described the process and the results of an implementation of Internet terminal using G.729.1 wideband speech codec for next generation network. For this purpose firstly we chose a high performance RISC application processor having DSP features for speech codec processing and enhanced Multimedia Accelerator(eMMA) function for video codec. In the implementation of this terminal, we used G.729.1 codec recently standardized in ITU-T which is a new scalable speech and audio codec that extends 0.729 speech coding standard. To adopt G.729.1 codec to this terminal we transformed most of the fixed point C codes which require more complexity into assembly codes so as to minimize processing time in the processor. As a result of this work we reduced the execution time of the original C codes about 80% and operated in real time on the terminal. For video we used H.263/MPEG-4 codec which is supported by the eMMA with hardware in the processor. In the SIP call processing test connected to real network we obtained under looms end-to-end delay and 3.8 MOS value measured with PESQ instrument. Besides this terminal operated well with commercial terminals.

  • In recent years, HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has attracted considerable attention as the state-of-the-art technology for video transport. HAS dynamically adjusts the quality of video streaming according to the network bandwidth and device capability of users. Content-Centric Networking (CCN) has also emerged as a future Internet architecture, which is a novel communication paradigm that integrates content delivery as a native network primitive. These trends have led to the new research issue of harmonizing HAS with the in-network caching provided by CCN routers. Previous research has shown that the performance of HAS can be improved by using the H.264/SVC(scalable video codec) in the in-network caching environments. However, the previous study did not address the misbehavior that causes video freeze when overestimating the available network bandwidth, which is attributable to the high cache hit rate. Thus, we propose a new SVC-based adaptation algorithm that utilizes a drop timer. Our approach aims to stop the downloading of additional enhancement layers that are not cached in the local CCN routers in a timely manner, thereby preventing excessive consumption of the video buffer. We implemented our algorithm in the SVC-HAS client and deployed a testbed that could run Smooth-Streaming, which is one of the most popular HAS solutions, over CCNx, which is the reference implementation of CCN. Our experimental results showed that the proposed scheme (SLA) could avoid video freeze in an effective manner, but without reducing the high hit rate on the CCN routers or affecting the high video quality on the SVC-HAS client.

  • In order to reduce the size of frame memory or bus bandwidth, frame memory compression (FMC) recompresses reconstructed or reference frames of video codecs. This paper proposes a novel FMC design based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) - set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT), which supports fine-scalable throughput and is area-efficient. In the proposed design, multi-cores with small block sizes are used in parallel instead of a single core with a large block size. In addition, an appropriate pipelining schedule is proposed. Compared to the previous design, the proposed design achieves the processing speed which is closer to the target system speed, and therefore it is more efficient in hardware utilization. In addition, a scheme in which two passes of SPIHT are merged into one pass called merged refinement pass (MRP) is proposed. As the number of shifters decreases and the bit-width of remained shifters is reduced, the size of SPIHT hardware significantly decreases. The proposed FMC encoder and decoder designs achieve the throughputs of 4,448 and 4,000 Mpixels/s, respectively, and their gate counts are 76.5K and 107.8K. When the proposed design is applied to high efficiency video codec (HEVC), it achieves 1.96% lower average BDBR and 0.05 dB higher average BDPSNR than the previous FMC design.

  • This paper describes an effective technique for coding video sequences based on JPEG2000 codec. In the proposed method, multiple frames are combined into one large picture by interleaving each pixel data. A large picture enables images to be coded more efficiently and image quality is improved. A video sequence is efficiently coded by adapting the time correlation of the video sequences to spatial correlation. We demonstrated the effectiveness of this method by encoding video sequences using JPEG2000.

  • Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new coding paradigm that enables to exploit the statistics among sources only in decoder and to achieve extremely low complex video encoding without any loss of coding efficiency. Wyner-Ziv coding, a particular implementation of DVC, reconstructs video by correcting noise on side information using channel code. Since a good quality of side information brings less noise to be removed by the channel code, generation of good side information is very important for the overall coding efficiency. However, if there are complex motions among frames, it is very hard to generate a good quality of side information without any information of original frame. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the quality of the side information using small amount of additional information of original frame in the form of hash. By decoder's informing encoder where the hash has to be transmitted, side information can be improved enormously with only small amount of hash data. Therefore, the proposed method gains considerable coding efficiency. Results of our experiment have verified average PSNR gain up to 1 dB, when compared to the well-known DVC codec, known as DISCOVER codec.

  • The growing availability of broadband multimedia applications are providing strict real-time services and enabling users to feel much interactivity as well as 'sense of presence'. In that sense, there would be increased demand for what network and system have to do to fulfill the user expectations. In this paper, we implement a real-time multimedia application which make use of real-time DXT CODEC and investigate what the challenges of networking and system are. We carry out various experiments over a research network test-bed to evaluate the performance of our proposals.

  • In this paper, we propose a compressed sensing (CS) based Wyner-Ziv (WZ) codec using motion-aligned auto regressive model (MAAR) based side information (SI) extrapolation to improve the compression performance of low-delay distributed video coding (DVC). In the CS based WZ codec, the WZ frame is divided into small blocks and CS measurements of each block are acquired at the encoder, and a specific CS reconstruction algorithm is proposed to correct errors in the SI using CS measurements at the decoder. In order to generate high quality SI, a MAAR model is introduced to improve the inaccurate motion field in auto regressive (AR) model, and the Tikhonov regularization on MAAR coefficients and overlapped block based interpolation are performed to reduce block effects and errors from over-fitting. Simulation experiments show that our proposed CS based WZ codec associated with MAAR based SI generation achieves better results compared to other SI extrapolation methods.
