  • It is well known that there exist no closed minimal surfaces in a 3-dimensional Euclidean space R$^{3}$. Myers [4] generalized the result to the case of the higher dimension and proved that there are no closed minimal hypersurfaces in an open hemisphere. The complete and non-compact version concerning Myers' theorem is recently considered by Cheng [1] and the following theorem is proved.

  • We study the Gauss map G of ruled surfaces in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^3$ with respect to the so called Cheng-Yau operator ${\Box}$ acting on the functions defined on the surfaces. As a result, we establish the classification theorem that the only ruled surfaces with Gauss map G satisfying ${\Box}G=AG$ for some $3{\times}3$ matrix A are the flat ones. Furthermore, we show that the only ruled surfaces with Gauss map G satisfying ${\Box}G=AG$ for some nonzero $3{\times}3$ matrix A are the cylindrical surfaces.

  • Chen and Ishikawa studied the surfaces of revolution of the polynomial and the rational kind of finite type in Euclidean 3-space $E^3$ [10]. Here, the pedal of revolution surfaces of the polynomial and the rational kind are discussed. Also, as a special case of general revolution surfaces, the sphere and catenoid are studied for the kind of finite type.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the hypersurface Mn in the Euclidean (n + 1)-space ℝn+1 that satisfies an equation of mean curvature type, called singular minimal hypersurface equation. Such an equation physically characterizes the surfaces in the upper half-space ℝ+3 (u) with lowest gravity center, for a fixed unit vector u ∈ ℝ3. We first state that a singular minimal cylinder Mn in ℝn+1 is either a hyperplane or a α-catenary cylinder. It is also shown that this result remains true when Mn is a translation hypersurface and u is a horizantal vector. As a further application, we prove that a singular minimal translation graph in ℝ3 of the form z = f(x) + g(y + cx), c ∈ ℝ - {0}, with respect to a certain horizantal vector u is either a plane or a α-catenary cylinder.

  • In this study, tubular surfaces that play an important role in technological designs in various branches are examined for the case of the base curve is not satisfying the fundamental theorem of the differential geometry. In order to give an alternative perspective to the researches on tubular surfaces, the modified orthogonal frame is used in this study. Firstly, the relationships between the Serret-Frenet frame and the modified orthogonal frame are summarized. Then the definitions of the tubular surfaces, some theorems, and results are given. Moreover, the fundamental forms, the mean curvature, and the Gaussian curvature of the tubular surface are calculated according to the modified orthogonal frame. Finally, the properties of parameter curves of the tubular surface with modified orthogonal frame are expressed and the tubular surface is drawn according to the Frenet frame and the modified orthogonal frame.

  • Let M be a connected n-dimensional submanifold of a Euclidean space $E^{n+k}$ equipped with the induced metric and ${\Delta}$ its Laplacian. If the position vector x of M is decomposed as a sum of three vectors $x=x_1+x_2+x_0$ where two vectors $x_1$ and $x_2$ are non-constant eigen vectors of the Laplacian, i.e., ${\Delta}x_i={\lambda}_ix_i$, i = 1, 2 (${\lambda}_i{\in}R$) and $x_0$ is a constant vector, then, M is called a 2-type submanifold. In this paper we showed that a 2-type surface M in $E^3$ satisfies ${\langle}{\Delta}x,x-x_0{\rangle}=c$ for a constant c, where ${\langle},{\rangle}$ is the usual inner product in $E^3$, then M is an open part of a circular cylinder. Also we showed that if a quadric hypersurface M in a Euclidean space satisfies ${\langle}{\Delta}x,x{\rangle}=c$ for a constant c, then it is one of a minimal quadric hypersurface, a genaralized cone, a hypersphere, and a spherical cylinder.

  • In this paper, we study surfaces of revolution without parabolic points in 3-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, satisfying the condition ${\Delta}^{II}G=f(G+C)$, where ${\Delta}^{II}$ is the Laplace operator with respect to the second fundamental form, $f$ is a smooth function on the surface and C is a constant vector. Our main results state that surfaces of revolution without parabolic points in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which satisfy the condition ${\Delta}^{II}G=fG$, coincide with surfaces of revolution with non-zero constant Gaussian curvature.

  • Triangulation is one of the fundamental problems in computational geometry and computer graphics community, and it has huge application areas such as 3D printing, computer-aided engineering, surface reconstruction, surface visualization, and so on. The Delaunay refinement algorithm is a well-known method to generate quality triangular meshes when point cloud and/or constrained edges are given in two- or three-dimensional space. In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient algorithm to triangulate Voronoi surfaces of Voronoi diagram of spheres in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. The proposed algorithm is based on the Ruppert's Delaunay refinement algorithm, and we modified the algorithm to be applied to the triangulation of Voronoi surfaces in two ways. First, a new method to deciding the location of a newly added vertex on the surface in 3-dimensional space is proposed. Second, a new efficient but effective way of estimating approximation error between Voronoi surface and triangulation. Because the proposed algorithm generates a triangular mesh for Voronoi surfaces with guaranteed quality, users can control the level of quality of the resulting triangulation that their application problems require. We have implemented and tested the proposed algorithm for random non-intersecting spheres, and the experimental result shows the proposed algorithm produces quality triangulations on Voronoi surfaces satisfying the quality criterion.
