This study was performed to investigate the effects of Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen (bamboo extract) on the changes of antioxidant enzymes and histopathological changes of liver and kidney in mice when administered in different dosages. The experimental groups were divided into four. For control group, 0.9% NaCl (0.2 ml/25 g B.W.) and for experimental groups, 5% (H1 group), 10% (H2 group), and 20%(H3 group) bamboo extract diluted with 0.9% NaCl, were administered (0.2 ml/25 g B.W.) respectively for 28 days at an interval of 48 hours. MnSOD activities were increased in H1 group (46%, P<0.05), H2 group (40%, P<0.05), and H3 group (34%, P<0.05) as compared to the control group. CuZnSOD activities were increased in H1 group (11%, P<0.05), but were decreased in H3 group (13%, P<0.05). The activities of catalase were decreased in H1 group (39%, P<0.05), H2 group (34%, P<0.05), and H3 group (31%, P<0.05) as compared to the control group. Histopathological observation revealed ballooned hepatocytes in the pericentral and periportal veins of H1 group. More ballooned and injured hepatocytes than in H1 group were observed in the H2 and H3 groups. Detachment of endothelial cells of the central vein was observed in the H2 and H3 groups. These results indicated that bamboo extract developed dose-dependent changes in antioxidant enzyme activities and developed histopathological changes of liver and kidney.
To develop a simple test for evaluation crop tolerance to acid rain disks of recently matured leaves of 12 crops(rice, corn, barley, wheat, soybean, adzuki bean, Chinese cabbage, radish, lettuce, spinach, and tomato) were soaked in simulated acid rain(SAR) solutions for 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. Changes in pH and electrical conductivity(EC) of leaf soaked solutions and changes in the color of the soaked leaves were observed. The pH and EC of leaf soaked solutions differed depending on the pH of SAR, crops, and soaking time. Among the crops differences in pH of leaf soaked solutions were most stable and significant for 1∼4 hour soaking in pH 4.0 SAR solution, but those of EC were for 1∼4 hour solaking in pH 5.0 SAR soultions. Color of leaves soaked in pH 2.0 SAR solutions was changed significantly, but not in the pH 3.0 or higher SAR solutions. Vis-ual damages of intact leaves caused by spray of pH 2.0 SAR solution in the greenhouse was posi-tively correlated with pH changes in pH 4.0 SAR solution, but not with EC changes in pH 5.0 SAR solution or color changes of leaves soaked in pH 2.0 soulution. The pH of solution was posi-tively correlated with Ca and Mg concentrations of the solutions and EC was positively correlated with K, Ca, and Mg.

The purpose of this study is the understanding to changes in the characteristic of soil structure and classification, atterberg limits, undrained shear strength and consolidation of clayey soil dependent on pH of soil pore water. A series of tests including consistency tests, uniaxial compressive tests, vane tests and oedometer tests are performed on. The test results indicated that pH changes in the soil pH resulted in changes in the soil structure and classification, stress-strain behavior. Specially, when pH is conditioned to 7, liquid limit, undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure are the largest.
The changes of chlorophylls and pH of cooked water were investigated in blanched and fermented cabbage. In blanched cabbage, pheophytins were increased markedly with heating time. This was related to the changes of pH and the effects of heat. One minute blanching accelerated the formation of chlorophyllides by the activation of chlorophyllase. In fermented cabbage, pH and chlorophylls were decreased rapidly at the beginning of fermentation. At the final of fermentation, all chlorophylls and chlorophyllides were converted to pheophytins ana pheophorbides, and the content of pheophytins was higher than the content of pheophorbides. The content of pheophorbides in fermented cabbage was higher than that in blanched cabbage.
The role of vascular NAD(P)H oxidase in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-induced vasospasm in the basilar artery was examined in a rat model. Arterial vasospasm characterized by increased wall thickness and decreased lumen size was observed at 5 to 7 days after $2^{nd}$ injection of blood into cisterna magna, and these changes were significantly ameliorated by pretreatment of diphenyleneiodonium $(DPI,\;25\;{\mu}l\;of\;100\;{\mu}M),$ an inhibitor of NAD(P)H oxidase. To determine the time course of changes in the vascular NAD(P)H oxidase activity, cerebral vasculature was isolated at different time intervals from 12 hrs to 14 days after injection of autologous blood. At 24 hrs after the second injection of blood, the NAD(P)H oxidase activity was markedly increased with an enhanced membrane translocation of p47phox, but by 48 hours both the enzyme activity and p47phox translocation regained normal values, and were remained unchanged up to 14 days after SAH. However, no significant changes in the expression of p22phox mRNA was observed throughout the experiments. These findings suggest that the activation of NAD(P)H oxidase by which assembly of the oxidase components enhanced and subsequent production of superoxide in the early stages of SAH might contribute to the delayed cerebral vasospasm in SAH rats.

Purpose: For a proper wound care, the correct evaluation of wound is very important. Usually the evaluation of wound was subjective, and as a result, wound care was empirical. There were many attempts to objectify the wound evaluation, and one of them was measurement of the wound pH. The purpose of this study is to observe the wound pH changes during wound healing phase. Methods: From 2005 to 2007, we measured the pH values of 6 acute wounds, which were split thickness skin graft donor sites. In addition, we measured the pH values of 18 chronic wounds, which were 17 pressure sores and 1 tuberculosis ulcer. After pH meter ($SkinCheck1^{(R)}$, Hanna Instruments, Italy) was calibrated, wound pH was checked. Wound was cleansed with saline gauze and dressed with polyurethane foam dressing($Medifoam^{(R)}$, Biopol, Korea). Results: In split thickness skin graft donor sites, the pH raised(mean pH value: $7.45{\rightarrow}7.62$) when the wound was on the process of healing(*p=0.027, analysis of Wilcoxon signed-rank test). If wound became re-epithelialised, the pH value dropped to that of normal skin. However, we could not find a relation between time and the pH values in chronic wound. Conclusion: We could observe the consistent wound pH changes during wound healing phase in acute wound.

In this report, we describe the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) immobilized on pH. responsive, cross-linked poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) thin films, as a potential application for pH nanosensors. The methodology is based on the variation in surface plasmon resonance of immobilized AuNPs with changing the interparticle distances, caused by the swelling/deswelling of the pH responsive P4VP polymer films. The change in optical properties of the immobilized AuNPs in response to the pH of surrounding media was investigated by a simple yet powerful tool; UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The swelling of the P4VP chains at pH 2 causes an increase in the interparticle distances of immobilized AUNPS ($\sim20nm$) and hence leads to a blue shift of 48 nm in their surface plasmon resonance band peak. On the other hand, when the surrounding media was altered from pH 2 to 10, a red shift of absorption maxima was observed. The changes were rapid, and the effect was reversible. This system could prove to be useful in fabricating nanosensors for detecting the pH or pH changes of surrounding aqueous medium.
This study was conducted to investigate changes in blood properties of high potassium (HK) phenotype Jindo dogs (15kg$\pm$2kg) after daily oral administration with water celery extracts (10 ml/kg) for 7 days. Blood samples were collected for three days in a row before administration of water celery extracts. After water celery extracts administration, blood samples were collected at 3h, 6h, 9h and then on daily basis until day 10 post administration (PA). At day 15, final sample was collected. Blood samples were analyzed on the basis of red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, mean corpuscular volume(MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC), gluthathione concentration(GSH) and met-hemoglobin(Met-Hb) concentration. The significant changes (p<0.01, p<0.05) of RBCs were shown at 3 h to day 5, and days 7 and 9 after administration. PCV values were decreased form 3 h to day 10 after administration. Mean Hb concentration showed significant increase as 3 h to day 3, and day 6 to day 9 after administration. The significant changes (p<0.05) of WBCs were shown at 9 h and day 1 after administration. The increased numbers of MCV were detected at days 6 to 9 after administration (p<0.05, p<0.01). The significant changes of MCHC were shown at 9h and day 1 after administration. The significant increases (p<0.01, p<0.05) of GSH concentration were detected at days 1, 6 and 7 after administration. In Met-Hb concentration, the significant increases (p<0.05) occurred at only 9h and day 7 after administration, The significant increases (p<0.01, p<0.05) of reticulocyte were detected at days 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Data from blood samples collected at day 15 after administration showed that all of blood analysis results returned to normal level, compared to controls.

All spectroscopic methods used in this work indicate the instability of tungstophosphates in aqueous solutions and considerable dependence on pH with regard to the dominant species present in the solution. UV spectroscopy indicates that some changes occur in the system but they cannot be specified. IR spectroscopy gives more information on the identification of the dominant species as a function the pH of the solution. NMR spectroscopy provides unique data, which can be used for more accurate interpretation of changes in the solution of various pH values. In the case of aqueous solutions of tungstophosphates, the parent anion was present only in a very acidic solution of ca. pH 1. Some differences in interpretation of the molecular species present under various experimental conditions can be ascribed to some extent to the diversity of chemical shifts of NMR. Under physiological conditions attained with the addition of NaOH, tungstophosphates was dominantly present in the form of the lacunary monovacant anion.
The stability of brass coated on steel cords with pH and applied constant potential changes in aqueous solution has been investigated by AC impedance measurements. In solutions of the constant pH, as a applied constant potential is shifted to positive potential, the coating pore resistance is reduced. The fact indicates that as a applied constant potential is shifted to positive potential, the brass coated is dissolved more in solution. The stability of brass coated on steel cords decrease in the order pH=7.1 > pH=4.0 > pH=10.0. The above results are demonstrated by the data of scanning of electronic microscopy(SEM)/energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS).
