  • There is an extensive literature on retrial queueing models. While a majority of the literature on retrial queueing models focuses on the retrial times to be exponentially distributed (so as to keep the state space to be of a reasonable size), a few papers deal with nonexponential retrial times but with some additional restrictions such as constant retrial rate, only the customer at the head of the retrial queue will attempt to capture a free server, 2-state phase type distribution, and finite retrial orbit. Generally, the retrial queueing models are analyzed as level-dependent queues and hence one has to use some type of a truncation method in performing the analysis of the model. In this paper we study a retrial queueing model with threshold-type policy for orbiting customers in the context of nonexponential retrial times. Using matrix-analytic methods we analyze the model and compare with the classical retrial queueing model through a few illustrative numerical examples. We also compare numerically our threshold retrial queueing model with a previously published retrial queueing model that uses a truncation method.

  • This study discusses the performance evaluation of queueing network methodologies as used for the planning of FMS production systems. The possibility of applications and utilities of queueing network models is investigated for FMS producton plans. Experimental results by queueing network models such as CAN-Q, MVAQ and results by detailed simulation models written in SIMAN are compared and some propositions are presented based on the results of the experiments.

  • Tandem queueing systems well suit for modeling many telecommunication systems. Recently, very general $BMAP/G/1/N/1{\to}{\bullet}/PH/1/M-1$ type tandem queues were constructively studied. In this paper we illustrate application of the obtained results for optimization of a buffer pool design.

  • Queueing models are good models for fragments of communication systems and networks, so their investigation is interesting for theory and applications. Theses queues may play an important role for the validation of different decomposition algorithms designed for investigating more general queueing networks. So, in this paper we illustrate that the batch size distribution affects the loss probability, which is the main performance measure of a finite buffer queues.

  • This paper introduces the outlines of the state-of-the-art in studying FMSs using analytical queueing network models. These include Jackson networks, reversible networks and approximate models of non-product-form networks. the focus is on identifying the major features of models as they relate to the operational characteristics of FMSs. Prescriptive models concerning the optimal design and/or operational control of FMS networks are also discussed. We notice that the presentation of materials in this paper basically follows Yao and Buzacott, On Queueing Network Models of Flexible Manufacturing Systems(FMSs), invited and published on Queueing Systems, Theory and Application 1(1986). For other analytical models of FMSs, refer to Buzacott and Yao, Flexible Manufacturing Systems : A Review of Analytical Models, Management Science 32, No.7(1986).

  • This paper proposes queueing models for a Web server system which is composed of an infinite-buffer main server and finite-buffer auxiliary server(s). The system is modeled by the level-dependent quasi-birth- death (QBD) process. Utilizing the special structure of the QBD, we convert the infinite level-dependent QBD into a finite level-independent QBD and compute the state probabilities. We then explore the operational characteristics of the proposed web-server models and draw some useful conclusions.

  • Retrial queueing models have been studied extensively in the literature. These have many practical applications, especially in service sectors. However, retrial queueing models have their own limitations. Typically, analyzing such models involve level-dependent quasi-birth-and-death processes, and hence some form of a truncation or an approximate method or simulation approach is needed to study in steady-state. Secondly, in general, the customers are not served on a first-come-first-served basis. The latter is the case when a new arrival may find a free server while prior arrivals are waiting in the retrial orbit due to the servers being busy during their arrivals. In this paper, we take a different approach to the study of multi-server retrial queues in which the signals are generated in such a way to provide a reasonably fair treatment to all the customers seeking service. Further, this approach makes the study to be level-independent quasi-birth-and-death process. This approach is different from any considered in the literature. Using matrix-analytic methods we analyze MAP/M/c-type retrial queueing models along with Poisson signals in steady-state. Illustrative numerical examples including a comparison with previously published retrial queues are presented and they show marked improvements in providing a quality of service to the customers.

  • Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is considered to be the most promising transfer technique for BISDN due to its efficiency and flexibility. Queueing theory has been playing a very important role in performance evaluation of ATM for the past few years. This paper is composed of two parts. The first part is concerned with the several basic concepts of ATM. The second part surveys queueing approaches in ATM performance evaluation. It deals with stochastic models which have been proposed for the three basic categories of traffic sources (voice, data, video), various queueing models for statistical multiplexer and switch, and priority strategies for buffer control schemes.

  • For general open queueing network models, the relationship between weak limits of queue lengths and waiting times at stations is investigated under heavy traffic situations. It is shown that under suitable normalization, weak convergence of queue lengths and arrival processes is a sufficient condition for that of waiting times, and is also necessary condition when the network is of feedforward type. Moreover, these weak limits for queue lengths and waiting times are shown to be simply related.
