The surroundings of livestock farms, including dairy farms, are known to be a major source of development and transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. To control antibioticresistant bacteria in the livestock breeding environment, farms have installed livestock wastewater treatment facilities to treat wastewater before discharging the final effluent in nearby rivers or streams. These facilities have been known to serve as hotspots for inter-bacterial antibiotic-resistance gene transfer and extensively antibiotic-resistant bacteria, owing to the accumulation of various antibiotic-resistant bacteria from the livestock breeding environment. This review discusses antibiotic usage in livestock farming, including dairy farms, livestock wastewater treatment plants as hotspots for antibiotic resistant bacteria, and nonenteric gram-negative bacteria from wastewater treatment plants, and previous findings in literature.
The prevalence of major zoonotic diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis and the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Jeonbuk province was monitored from 2004 to 2008. For tuberculosis, a total of 306 heads from 92 farms were positive during the surveillance period, which 228 heads were from 78 dairy farms and 78 heads from 14 Hanwoo farms. Based on the number of recurrent tuberculosis in 92 positive farms, 28 farms or 43.8% of the positive farms had 1-4 additional outbreaks during the surveillance. Based on brucellosis surveillance of 5,252 dairy cattle and 2,600,829 Hanwoo conducted during the same time period, 4,818 heads from 1,203 farms were positive for brucellosis, which 445 heads were from 111 dairy farms and 4,373 heads from 1,092 Hanwoo farms. Among the 1,203 positive farms, 473 farms or 39.3% of the positive farms had experienced 1-4 recurrent brucellosis during the surveillance. According to nationwide surveillance of HPAI, a total of 45 cases had been reported between 2004 and 2008. Among those outbreaks, 20 cases were reported in Jeonbuk province and 3 cases in 2006 and 17 case in 2008. For the regional distribution of 20 cases in Jeonbuk, 4 cases (48,490 chickens), 4 cases (23,066 chickens 66(1) and ducks 23,000(3)), 11 cases (183,077 chickens 63,077 (10) and quails 120,000 (1)), and 1 case (9,000 ducks) were reported in Iksan, Jeongeup, Gimje and Sunchang, respectively.

Objective: This study was conducted to provide models to accurately predict nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) excretion of dairy cows on smallholder farms in Indonesia based on readily available farm data. Methods: The generic model in this study is based on the principles of the Lucas equation, describing the relation between dry matter intake (DMI) and faecal N excretion to predict the quantity of faecal N (QFN). Excretion of urinary N and faecal P were calculated based on National Research Council recommendations for dairy cows. A farm survey was conducted to collect input parameters for the models. The data set was used to calibrate the model to predict QFN for the specific case. The model was validated by comparing the predicted quantity of faecal N with the actual quantity of faecal N (QFNACT) based on measurements, and the calibrated model was compared to the Lucas equation. The models were used to predict N and P excretion of all 144 dairy cows in the data set. Results: Our estimate of true N digestibility equalled the standard value of 92% in the original Lucas equation, whereas our estimate of metabolic faecal N was -0.60 g/100 g DMI, with the standard value being -0.61 g/100 g DMI. Results of the model validation showed that the R2 was 0.63, the MAE was 15 g/animal/d (17% from QFNACT), and the RMSE was 20 g/animal/d (22% from QFNACT). We predicted that the total N excretion of dairy cows in Indonesia was on average 197 g/animal/d, whereas P excretion was on average 56 g/animal/d. Conclusion: The proposed models can be used with reasonable accuracy to predict N and P excretion of dairy cattle on smallholder farms in Indonesia, which can contribute to improving manure management and reduce environmental issues related to nutrient losses.

This study was conducted to investigate the status of brucellosis in dairy cattle from five selected dairy farms in the Mohammadpur Beribadh area of Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study was carried out from October 2010 to March 2011 in which a total of 334 serum samples from cattle in five herds were screened by the Rose-Bengal plate-agglutination test (RBPT) and the positives were confirmed using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA). A structured questionnaire was used to collect epidemiological information describing the animals. Overall, 4.20% of the animals were RBPT positive, while subsequent confirmatory tests with I-ELISA revealed that the overall animal-level prevalence derived from the samples was 1.20%. Additionally, the prevalence was relatively higher in females than in males. A significant association was found between abortion, age of the animals, and the occurrence of brucellosis (p < 0.05). Considering the overall low prevalence of brucellosis in the selected farms in the present study, a brucellosis eradication program for dairy farms using a test-and-slaughter policy would be possible.
From January to December 1993, 3,385 bulk milk samples were collected from 293 herds in Inchon area. Standard plate counts(SPC) and somatic cell counts(SCC) were performed by the method of milk collection, the situation of raising management and monthly. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1, Annual average SPC and SCC were respectively 638,000 cfu /mm and 647,000 cells /mm. SPC showed an abrupt decrease from January-1,088,000 cfu /mm to December-279,000 cfu /mm, but SCC showed a slow change from January-1,017,000 cells /mm to December -673,000 cells /mm 2. Variation on milk quality(annual average SPC) was shown a wide difference between everyday collection-575,000 cfu /mm and every other day collection-1,243,000 cfu /mm ac-cording to frequency of milk collection from dairy farms. However, there was a little difference In SCC. 3. In the raising scale, average SPC were the lowest in 16~25mi1king cows, and average SCC were the lowest in above 25milking cows. 4. According to types of milking machine, average SPC and SCC of dairy farms that are equipped with pipeline system were respectively 361,000 cfu /mm and 591,000 cells /mm. Those of dairy farms with bucket system were 549,000 cfu /me and 559,000 cells /mm. 5. In the types of management, average SPC an SCC of dairy farms with hired herdsman were 288,000 cfu /mm and 559,000 cells /mm. Those of dairy farms with self-management were 526,000 cfu /mm and 568,000 cells /mm.
A total of 2,024 quarters of 515 dairy cattle in Kangweon area were examined for incidence of subclinical mastitis. Milk samples from cattle infected with subclinical mastitis were studied bacteriologically and the bacterial strains isolated were further examined for sensitivity to 12 antibacterial agents. And the status of carrying out the mastitis control program in 28 dairy farms was examined. The results obtained were summerized as follows ; 1. A total of 308(59.8%) of 515 cattle and 656(32.4%) of 2,024 quarters were found to be infected with subclinical mastitis. 2. The 277 strains of etiological agents were isolated from 358 subclinical quarters. These were identified as Staphylococcus aureus(14.4%), other staphylococci(36.5%), Streptoccus agalatiae(8.7%), other streptococci(30.7%), Bacillus spp.(1.8%), Corynebacterium spp.(1.4%) and coliform(0.7%). 3. The 109 strains of streptococci and 141 strains of staphylococci were examined for sensitivity to 12 antibacterial agents. All the strains of streptococci were sensitive to penicillin, ampicillin and cephalothin, and they were also sensitive to erythromycin(88.1%), clindamycin(83.5%), enrofloxacin(75.2%), trimethoprim+sulfamethoxazole(67.9%), The strains of staphylococci were sensitive to cephalothin(97.2%), gentamicin(83.0%). enroflozacin(80.9%), trimethoprim+sulfamethoxazole(78.0%), erythromycin(71.6%) and clindamycin(71.6%). But all the strains resisted to colistin. 4. In the 28 dairy farms examined, condition of udder before washing was dirty in most of the farms (89.7%). Hygiene of milking equipment was only good in the 5 farms(17.9%). Teat preparation before milking was good in the 6 farms(21.4%). The farms in which teat dipping after milking was conducted were 46.4%. Dry cow treatment for the complete herd was carried out in most of the farms(89.3%) but mastitis checking was only carried out in the 8 farms(28.6%) irregularly.
TThis survey was carried out to investigate the prevalence of the antibody for bovine paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) in dairy cattle in Seosan-Taean area. From February to August in 2009, 254 M.RT. samples were collected from 57 farms in the regions and enzyme immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted. Among 254 samples, 13 (5.1%) M.R.T. samples of 3 (5.2%) farms were positive by ELISA. In regional analysis, 1 (3.1%) of 34 farms in Seasan and 2 (8.6%) of 23 farms in Taean were positive in ELISA. According to the raising scale of dairy farms, the farm with below 30 heads showed the higher positive rate (2 out of 3 positive farms) than the farms with over 30 heads (1 out of 3 positive farms).
In order to investigate reproductive disorder in dairy cows, 312 uterine from abattroirs and 56 cows from dairy farms were examined. The ovary and uterine were collected from abattroirs and rectal palpation was carried out in the case of reproductive disorder at dairy farm. Microbiological examination was also carried out from the collected samples. 1. Out of 312 ovaria from slaughter-house, cystic ovary and endometritis were classified as 51(16%) and 134(43%), respectively. And of 56 dairy cow from farms, 43(77%) were identifies as endometritis. 2. The main cause of reproductive disorder was classified as hormonal imbalances, endometritis and cystic ovary, singly or in combination. 3. The main causative agents of endometritis was encountered as E coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus sp and Corynebacterium sp. 4. The highest susceptible antibiotics to the isolates was cephalosporin.
