  • The world-wide rate of obesity is increasing continuously, representing a serious medical threat since it is associated with a variety of diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and numerous cancers. Sophora japonicais used as a traditional herb for medicinal purposes in eastern Asia. However, the anti-obesity effects of S. japonicafruit have not been explored. The aim of this study is to investigate the inhibition of adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis by an ethanol extract of S. japonicafruit (EESF) in 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes. Our results demonstrate that EESF suppressed the terminal differentiation of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes in a dose-dependent manner, as confirmed by a decrease in lipid droplet number and lipid content through Oil Red O staining. EESF significantly reduced the accumulation of cellular triglyceride, which was associated with a significant inhibition of the levels of pro-adipogenic transcription factors, including PPARγ, C/EBPα and C/EBPβ. In addition, EESF potentially down regulated the expression levels of adipocyte-specific proteins, including aP2 and leptin. In particular, EESF treatment effectively enhanced the activation of the AMPK signaling pathway; however, the co-treatment with compound C, an inhibitor of AMPK, significantly restored the EESF-induced inhibition of pro-adipogenic transcription factors and adipocyte-specific genes. These results indicate that EESF may exert an anti-obesity effect by controlling the AMPK signaling pathway, suggesting that the fruit extract of S. japonica may be a potential anti-obesity agent.

  • The goal of this paper is to set the research and development (R&D) strategic plan of Honam Sea Grant (HSG) program which is to secure the base technologies for the success of Jeollanamdo's policy projects in the area of maritime and fisheries. HSG's mission is to support science-based sustainable management, conservation and enhancement of Honam coastal and aquatic resources through research, extension and education. Firstly, 80 cases of Jeollanam-do's policy project and 48 cases of HSG's R&D project are compiled and classified into the five areas of maritime and fisheries. Secondly, typical key words are extracted from each five areas and assessed the inherent meanings of each key words using quarterly segmented meaning allocation techniques with 'intended for practical use', 'intended for theoretical use', 'intended for future', and 'intended for current'. Then, we proposed R&D strategic plan based on the evaluation results and, it's practical use is also discussed.

  • This experiment was conducted to establish the cultural practice for reduction of lodging by the effective water management under direct seeding on flooded paddy surface as treated by the drainage times using Dongjinbyeo at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station during 1994-1995. As the increased midsummer drainage times, the field lodging were reduced by reduction of culm length and large amounts of root with favorable distribution in deep soil, indicating low canopy architecture could promote the light transmission in the plants and favorable root growth. The yield performance was high by increased drainage times which contributed to mainly percentage of ripened grain and 1, 000-grain weight. As a result, two to three times midsummer drainage as effective water management during plant growth was desirable.
