  • Researchers have suggested that students should be experienced in progress of geometric thinking set out in naive and intuitive level and deduced throughout gradual formalization rather than completed mathematics are conveyed to students for students' understanding. This study examined naive and intuitive thinking of students by investigating students' geometric problem solving without diagrams. The students showed these naive thinking: lack of recognition of relation between problem and conditions, use of intuitive judgement depending on diagrams, lacking in understanding of role of specific case, and use of unjustified assumption. This study suggests implication for instruction in geometry.

  • by A.C. Clairaut is the first geometry textbook based on the historico-genetic principle against the logico-deduction method of Euclid's This paper aims to recognize Clairaut's historico-genetic principle by inquiring into this book and to search for its applications to school mathematics. For this purpose, we induce the following five characteristics that result from his principle and give some suggestions for school geometry in relation to these characteristics respectively : 1. The appearance of geometry is due to the necessity. 2. He approaches to the geometry through solving real-world problems.- the application of mathematics 3. He adopts natural methods for beginners.-the harmony of intuition and logic 4. He makes beginners to grasp the principles. 5. The activity principle is embodied. In addition, we analyze the two useful propositions that may prove these characteristics properly.

  • One of the main objects of geometry in mathematics education is to improve students' geometric intuition capability and logical reasoning capability based on them. A visual element related to intuition plays an important role in teaching and learning of geometry. Therefore, in this research, we focus on the development of multimedia title available to dynamic operation about visual elements and verify of effect of its application. This title for the learning of "the Pythagorean theorem and its practical use" in the third grade of middle school is designed and implemented by an authoring tool, Toolbook. And it enables learners to study mathematics individually and can be applied to the educational field, too. And we taught two groups, the applied group and the compared one of the second grade of middle school and surveyed Questions and evaluated study achievement. We calculated study achievement of two groups on t-test using SPSS. As the result, we knew that the applied group is higher than the compared one in the study achievement and provision of dynamic operation possibility on visual elements make students know very high learning effect and help improvement of intelligent capability.

  • This study is on the differences of the functions of definitions between in proof geometry and in intuitional geometry. There are the functions of definitions in intuitional geometry which may connect to those in proof geometry. We assert that when we teach them, we should be careful, for the teaching of the functions of definitions in proof.

  • Middle school mathematics treats axiom as mere fact verified by experiment or observation and doesn't mention it axiom. But axiom is very important to understand the difference between empirical verification and mathematical proof, intuitive geometry and deductive geometry, proof and nonproof. This study analysed textbooks and surveyed gifted students' conception of axiom. The results showed the problem and limitation of middle school mathematics on the treatment of axiom and proof.

  • We have many problems in the teaching and learning of proof, especially in the demonstrative geometry of middle school mathematics introducing the proof for the first time. Above all, it is the serious problem that many students do not understand the meaning of proof. In this paper we intend to show that teaching the meaning of proof in terms of historic-genetic approach will be a method to improve the way of teaching proof. We investigate the development of proof which goes through three stages such as experimental, intuitional, and scientific stage as well as the development of geometry up to the completion of Euclid's Elements as Bran-ford set out, and analyze the teaching process for the purpose of looking for the way of improving the way of teaching proof through the historic-genetic approach. We conducted lessons about the angle-sum property of triangle in accordance with these three stages to the students of seventh grade. We show that the students will understand the meaning of proof meaningfully and properly through the historic-genetic approach.

  • This study provides middle school students with an opportunity to construct elementary functions with dynamic geometry based on the proportion between lengths of triangle to activate students' intuition in handling elementary algebraic functions and their geometric properties. In addition, this study emphasizes the process of justification about the choice of students' construction method to improve students' deductive reasoning ability. As a result of the pilot lesson study, this paper shows the characteristics of the students' construction process of elementary functions and the roles the teacher plays in the process.

  • The study aims to reflect the elementary school geometry education based on the Realistic Mathematics Education in the Netherlands in the light of the results from recent researches in geometry education and the direction of geometry standards for school mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in order to induce implications for improving korean geometry curriculum and textbook series. In order to attain these purposes, the present paper reflects the history of elementary school geometry education in the Netherlands, sketches the elementary school geometry education based on the Realistic Mathematics Education in the Netherlands by reflecting general goals of the mathematics education, the core goals for geometry strand of the Netherlands, and geometry and spatial orientation strand of Dutch Pluspunt textbook series for the elementary school more concretely. Under these reflections on the documents, it is analyzed what is the characteristics of geometry strand in the Netherlands as follows: emphasis on realistic spatial phenomenon, intuitive and informal approach, progressive approach from intuitive activity to spatial reasoning, intertwinement of mathematics strands and other disciplines, emphasis on interaction of the students, cyclical repetition of experiencing phase, explaining phases, and connecting phase. Finally, discussing points for improving our elementary school geometry curriculum and textbook series development are described as follows: introducing spatial orientation and emphasizing spatial visualization and spatial reasoning with respect to the instruction contents, considering balancing between approach stressing on grasping space and approach stressing on logical structure of geometry, intuitive approach, and integrating mathematics strands and other disciplines with respect to the instruction method.
