Review of the Yun, Baek-nam's Articles 「Theater and Society」(1920) (윤백남의 논설 「연극과 사회」(1920) 고찰)

  • This study is to re-read Yun, Baek-nam(1888-1954)'s editorial "Theatre and Society" from the perspective of postcolonial criticism. He was a man of the theatre who pursued practical interests in compliance with the colonial reality under the rule of the Japanese imperialism. His advocacy of theatre development work was based on the Japan-directional reformism and on Japan-friendly in following after Japan's improvement policy. His general discussion on Western theatre history had considerable errors as a result of focus on the social role and utility of the theatre. But his vindication of theatre-actor opened an era of interaction between theatre and intelligence in Korea. In addition, his enlightening view of a theatre became such as one of the cornerstones for the Shinkug Movement during Japanese colonial period in Korea.

An Inquiry on the Understanding Process of Discrete Mathematics using TI-92 Calculator - Matrix and Graph- (TI-92 계산기를 활용한 이산수학의 이해과정 탐구-「행렬과 그래프」단원을 중심으로-)

  • This paper is a study on the understanding process of「Matrix and Graph」on discrete mathematics using TI-92 calculator. For this purpose, we investigated the understanding process of two middle school students learning the concepts of matrix and graph using TI-92 calculator. In this process, we collected qualitative data using recorder and video camera. Then we categorized these data as follows: students' attitude related to using technology, understanding process of meaning, expression and operation of matrix and graph, mathematical communication, etc. From this, we have the following conclusions: First, students inquired out the meaning and role of matrix by themselves using calculator. We could see that calculator can do the role of good learning partner to them. Second, students realized their own mistakes when they used calculator on the process of learning matrix. So we found that calculator could form the self-leading learning circumstance on learning matrix. Third, calculators reinforce the mathematical communication in learning matrix and graph. That is, calculator could be a good mediator to reinforce mathematical communication between teacher and students, among students on learning matrix and graph.

  • Ball, Thames & Phelps(2008) introduced the idea of Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching(MKT) teacher. Specialized Content Knowledge(SCK) is one of six categories in MKT. SCK is a knowledge base, useful especially for math teachers to analyze errors, evaluate alternative ideas, give mathematical explanations and use mathematical representation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the elementary teacher's SCK. 29 six graders made word problems with respect to division fraction $9/10{\div}2/5$. These word problems were classified four sentence types based on Sinicrope, Mick & Kolb(2002) and then representative four sentence types were given to 10 teachers who have taught six graders. Data analysis was conducted through the teachers' evaluation of the answers(word problems) and revision of students' mathematical errors. This study showed how to know meanings of fraction division for effective teaching. Moreover, it suggested several implications to develop SCK for teaching and learning.

  • Machine translation refers to a system where a computer translates a source sentence into a target sentence. There are various subfields of machine translation. APE (Automatic Post Editing) is a subfield of machine translation that produces better translations by editing the output of machine translation systems. In other words, it means the process of correcting errors included in the translations generated by the machine translation system to make proofreading. Rather than changing the machine translation model, this is a research field to improve the translation quality by correcting the result sentence of the machine translation system. Since 2015, APE has been selected for the WMT Shaed Task. and the performance evaluation uses TER (Translation Error Rate). Due to this, various studies on the APE model have been published recently, and this paper deals with the latest research trends in the field of APE.

Pedagogical Discussion on the concept of Tangent as a Linear Approximation (선형 근사로서의 접선 개념의 교육학적 고찰)

  • In the school mathematics the concept of tangent is introduced in several steps in suitable contexts. Students are required to reflect and revise their concepts of tangent in order to apply the improved concept to wider range of contexts. In this paper we consider the tangent as the optimal linear approximation to a curve at a given point and make three discussions on pedagogical aspects of it. First, it provides a method of finding roots of real numbers which can be used as an application of tangent. This may help students improve their affective variables such as interest, attitude, motivation about the learning of tangent. Second, this concept reflects the modern point of view of tangent, the linear approximation of nonlinear problems. Third, it gives precise meaning of two tangent lines appearing two sides of a cusp point of a curve.

An Exploration of the Improvement Direction for Decimal Fractional Multiplication Unit in Textbooks (소수 곱셈 단원의 교과서 개선 방향 탐색)

  • Although the multiplication of decimal fractions is expected to be easy for students to understand because of the similarity to natural numbers multiplication in computing methods, students show many errors in the multiplication of decimal fractions. This is a result of the instruction focused more on skill mastery than conceptual understanding. This study is a basic study for effectively developing a unit of multiplication of decimal fractions. For this purpose, we analyzed the curriculums' performance standards, significance in teaching-learning and evaluation, contents and methods for teaching multiplication of decimal fractions from the 7th curriculum to the revised curriculum of 2015 and the textbooks' activities and lessons. Further, we analyzed preceding studies and introductory books to suggest effective directions for developing teaching unit. As a result of the analysis, three implications were obtained: First, a meaningful instruction for estimation is needed. Second, it is necessary to present a visual model suitable for understanding the meaning of decimal multiplication. Third, the process of formalizing an algorithms for multiplying decimal fractions needs to be diversified.

  • FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions) 질의 응답 시스템은 자주 묻는 질문과 답변을 정의하고, 사용자 질의에 대해 정의된 답변 중 가장 알맞는 답변을 추론하여 제공하는 시스템이다. 정의된 대표 질문 및 대응하는 답변을 클래스(Class)라고 했을 때, FAQ 질의 응답 시스템은 분류(Classification) 문제라고 할 수 있다. 종래의 FAQ 분류는 동일 클래스 내 동의 문장(Paraphrase)에서 나타나는 공통적인 특징을 통해 분류 문제를 학습하였으나, 이는 비슷한 단어 구성을 가지면서 한 두 개의 단어에 의해 의미가 다른 문장의 차이를 구분하지 못하며, 특히 서로 다른 클래스에 속한 학습 데이터 간에 비슷한 의미를 가지는 문장이 존재할 때 클래스 분류에 오류가 발생하기 쉬운 문제점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이 문제점을 해결하고자 서로 다른 클래스 내의 학습 데이터 문장들이 상이한 클래스임을 구분할 수 있도록 클래스 일치 여부(Class coincidence classification) 문제를 결합 학습(Jointly learning)하는 기법을 제안한다. 동일 클래스 내 학습 문장의 무작위 쌍(Pair)을 생성 및 학습하여 해당 쌍이 같은 클래스에 속한다는 것을 학습하게 하면서, 동시에 서로 다른 클래스 간 학습 문장의 무작위 쌍을 생성 및 학습하여 해당 쌍은 상이한 클래스임을 구분해 내는 능력을 함께 학습하도록 유도하였다. 실험을 위해서는 최근 발표되어 자연어 처리 분야에서 가장 좋은 성능을 보이고 있는 BERT 의 텍스트 분류 모델을 이용했으며, 제안한 기법을 적용한 모델과의 성능 비교를 위해 한국어 FAQ 데이터를 기반으로 실험을 진행했다. 실험 결과, 분류 문제만 단독으로 학습한 BERT 기본 모델보다 본 연구에서 제안한 클래스 일치 여부 결합 학습 모델이 유사한 문장들 간의 차이를 구분하며 유의미한 성능 향상을 보인다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

An Evaluation of the Use of Statistical Methods in the Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases ([결핵 및 호흡기질환] 게재 논문의 통계적 기법 활용에 대한 평가)

  • Background : The statistical analysis is an essential procedure ensuring that the results of researches are based on evidences rather than opinion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate which statistical techniques are used and whether these statistical methods are used appropriately or not in the journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases. Materials and Methods : We reviewed 185 articles reported in the journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases in 1999. We evaluated the validity of used statistical methods based upon the checklist that was developed on the basis of the guideline for statistical reporting in articles for medical journals by International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Results : Among 185 articles, original articles and case reports were 110 (59.5%) and 61 (33.0%) respectively. In 112 articles excluding case reports and reviews, statistical techniques were used in 107 articles (95.5%). In 94 articles (83.9%) descriptive and inferential methods were used, while in 13 (11.6%) articles only descriptive methods were used. With the types of inferential statistical techniques, comparison of means was most commonly used (64/94, 68.1%), followed by contingency table (43/94, 45.7%) and correlation or regression (18/94, 19.1%). Among the articles in which descriptive methods were used, 83.2% (89/107) showed inappropriate central tendency and dispersion. In the articles in which inferential methods were used, improper methods were applied in 88.8% (79/89) and the most frequent misuse of statistical methods was inappropriate use of parametric methods (35/89, 39.3%). Only 14 articles (13.1%) were satisfactory in utilization of statistical methodology. Conclusion : Most of the statistical errors found in the journal were misuses of statistical methods related to basic statistics. This study suggests that researchers should be more careful when they describe and apply statistical methods and more extensive statistical refereeing system would be needed.

  • Objective:This study was designed to investigate the difference between executive function of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) group and that of neurotics, and to investigate the developmental aspects of ADHD group's executive function. Method:Executive function between ADHD(N=87) and Neurotics(N=19) was evaluated through their performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. The results were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and t-test. Results:The results revealed group difference between ADHD and neurotics in total correct reponses, total error responses, nonperseverative errors, number of categories completed, conceptual level responses. There was no significant difference between the performance of 8-12 aged group and 13-15 aged group. But 7-8 aged group showed significantly poor performance than 8-12 aged in total responses, total error responses, perseverative responses, perseverative error responses, nonperseverative error responses. Conclusions:In comparison to the neurotics group, the children of ADHD group are suggested to be lacking the ability to correct their responses according to the external feedback and they probably respond randomly without self-control. However, as there is no difference between perseverative errors and perseverative responses, the interpretation of this finding warrants caution. It also suggests that the developmental aspects should be considered in the studies of executive functions because there are differences in the performance of executive functions by ages.

Applying Social Strategies for Breakdown Situations of Conversational Agents: A Case Study using Forewarning and Apology (대화형 에이전트의 오류 상황에서 사회적 전략 적용: 사전 양해와 사과를 이용한 사례 연구)

  • With the breakthrough of speech recognition technology, conversational agents have become pervasive through smartphones and smart speakers. The recognition accuracy of speech recognition technology has developed to the level of human beings, but it still shows limitations on understanding the underlying meaning or intention of words, or understanding long conversation. Accordingly, the users experience various errors when interacting with the conversational agents, which may negatively affect the user experience. In addition, in the case of smart speakers with a voice as the main interface, the lack of feedback on system and transparency was reported as the main issue when the users using. Therefore, there is a strong need for research on how users can better understand the capability of the conversational agents and mitigate negative emotions in error situations. In this study, we applied social strategies, "forewarning" and "apology", to conversational agent and investigated how these strategies affect users' perceptions of the agent in breakdown situations. For the study, we created a series of demo videos of a user interacting with a conversational agent. After watching the demo videos, the participants were asked to evaluate how they liked and trusted the agent through an online survey. A total of 104 respondents were analyzed and found to be contrary to our expectation based on the literature study. The result showed that forewarning gave a negative impression to the user, especially the reliability of the agent. Also, apology in a breakdown situation did not affect the users' perceptions. In the following in-depth interviews, participants explained that they perceived the smart speaker as a machine rather than a human-like object, and for this reason, the social strategies did not work. These results show that the social strategies should be applied according to the perceptions that user has toward agents.
