  • Oysters have been continuously produced from all around the world including South Korea every year. The oyster shell by-products accompanied by the oysters have caused the social and environmental problems due to the absence of any method or technique to deal with the by-products. In order to solve those problems, diverse researches and environmental friendly methods using the oyster shells are in development by now due to the possibility as cheap materials. In this review, we discuss the worldwide status of oyster shells and investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of the oyster shells. In addition, we discuss the recent trends about the sustainable methods to utilize the oyster shells.

  • In this study, we located concrete substratum covered by oyster shells in the coastal area of Gijang-gun, Busan, South Korea, and monitored changes in coverage of macroalgae for approximately a year from January 2020 to determine the potential for sea forest restoration and resourceization of the oyster shells. At the start of monitoring, we observed that macroalgae coverage of the oyster-shell-covered concrete substratum (treatment) was 10 - 80 %, whereas no macroalgae were attached to the normal concrete substratum (control). By November, macroalgae coverage of the treatment had increased by 49 % compared to that of the control. We concluded that covering oyster shell on a sea forest reef can promote macroalgae establishment and the possibility of sea forest restoration by the resourceization of oyster shells.

  • In this study, a heavy-metal stabilization treatment using stabilizing agents derived from waste resources was utilized on Incheon North Port range sediment contaminated with Pb, Zn, and Cu. Both calcined red mud (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w) and oyster shell (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w) were applied for a wet-curing duration of 15 days. From the sequential extraction results, the oxide and organic fraction of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, and Cu) were observed strongly in the contaminated sediment. However, the fraction of heavy metal in the stabilized sediment was higher than the organic and residual fraction, in comparison to the contaminated sediment. Moreover, the leaching of heavy metals was reduced in the stabilized sediment, compared with the contaminated sediment. From these results, red mud and oyster shell were shown to be potential stabilizers of heavy metals in contaminated sediment.

  • The oyster shells of about 240,000 tons have been annually produced in south coast of South Korea. However, about 25% of the oyster shells (60,000tons) was recycled as oyster seeding and fertilizer due to the limited amount of consumption for such purposes. The stored amount of oyster shell in the fertilizer manufacturing company is overfilled, and thus cannot accept any more of the waste oyster shells. As a result, landfill and illegal dumping of waste oyster shells have become an increasingly serious issue since 2011. In this research, the problems generated by the oyster shells were investigated through surveying activities. One of the possible alternative solutions that can process large amount of waste economically was found to be the application of oyster shells as a construction materials.

  • BACKGROUND: Constructed wetlands are low-cost alternatives for treating domestics sewage. However, previous study has reported that the removal of phosphorus in constructed wetlands was limited. Therefore, a new alternative was needed to extend the life of the constructed wetlands. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of total phosphorus removal by oyster shell on longevity of constructed wetlands for treating domestic sewage. METHODS AND RESULTS: The changes of total phosphorus concentration and treatment efficiency in two constructed wetlands (CWs) classified as system A (coarse sand 100%) and system B (coarse sand 90%+oyster shell 10%) were investigated for 6 years. The actual saturation time of total phosphorus in the systems A and B was estimated to be longer than that of theoretical saturation by adsorption isotherm experiment. In particular, the saturation pattern of phosphorus in system A was maintained at a certain concentration level in the initial stage of operation, and finally saturation was reached as the saturation gradually progressed from the breaking point. In system B, the saturation period of phosphorus was prolonged as compared with system A due to the addition of oyster shells. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the longevity of the constructed wetlands can be extended due to the phosphorus saturation by adding the oyster shells to the coarse sands in constructed wetlands.

  • Over the last decades, great efforts have been devoted to reuse industrial wastes and by-products from various industries as supplementary cementitious materials in order to reduce carbon dioxide(CO2) emission by reducing the use of Portland cement in construction. Oyster shell waste, originating from the fishery industry, is available in huge quantities in certain areas, and is generally discarded or landfilled. In this study, we aimed to reuse oyster shell as an alternative to limestone in limestone calcined clay cement(LC3). The oyster shell calcined clay cement(OC3) paste were produced and were characterized via X-ray diffraction, isothermal calorimetry, compressive strength tests, and thermogravimetry. The results revealed that OC3 pastes exhibited similar strength development and reactivities by pozzolanic reaction with LC3, which implies that oyster shell could be used as a substitute for limestone in LC3.

  • Mechanical properties of shell powder containing mixed recycled plastics were investigated depending on the shell content and surface modification. First, shell powder and LDPE were compounded using the twin screw extruder to manufacture 40 wt% master batch(M/B), and the M/B was blended with LDPE to produce bulk specimens with 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt% shell content. To improve the compatibility of shell powder with mixed recycled plastics matrix, surface of shell powder was chemically modified with cations or cationic surfactant. Surface modified shell was also used to prepare bulk specimens with the same shell content. Mechanical property analysis showed obvious improvement for the surface modified shell containing bulk specimens compared to unmodified ones. These results can lead to the development of new applications for the mixed recycled plastics.

  • In this paper, bending strength and permeability tests were conducted on concrete permeable blocks manufactured by recycling industrial by-products of oyster shell and blast furnace slag to measure and compare bending strength and permeability coefficient, and present experimental research results. To this end, a total of 54 specimens with a size of 200x200x60mm for surface layer and base layer were manufactured, and bending strength and permeability test were carried ourt accoridng to KS F 4419. Eighteen types of mixing designs were implemented by varying the mixing and replacement rates of oyster shells and blast furnace slag. As a result of the experiment, the higher the mixing ratio of oyster shell, the lower the bending strength and the permeability coefficient. Thereafter, a total of three permeable blocks with dimensions of 200x200x60mm were manufactured and subjected to bending strength and permeability tests according to KS F 4419. As a result of the test, the bending strength satisfies the standard of KS F 4419, and the permeability coefficient is 12 times higher than the standard of KS F 4419. It seems that the proper mixing of oyster shells and blast furnace slag increases the amount of air, and further research on durability and economic feasibility of materials used to manufacture permeable blocks is required.
