The Toyota Production System (TPS) developed by Toyota Motor Corporation is a management principle and production method to improve values added thorough elimination of waste. Since the oil shock in 1970s, the TPS has drawn the worldwide attentions as a main factor of competitiveness of Japanese manufacturing system and has been studied and implemented in many countries regardless of size and types of industry. While the principles of the TPS system are known widely, the framework and the implementation methodology are rarely discussed, especially in the domestic companies. In this paper, the framework of the TPS system are developed as a view of the domestic practitioners and researchers, with which the introduction strategy can be developed as a guideline.

Toyota Production System (TPS) has been known a new production paradigm applicable to every type of manufacturing industry, not restricted to automobile assembly system. The basic framework of TPS has been studied and presented actively; many enterprises from all over the world including some of large domestic companies, have adopted and applied. This study analyzed the cases for TPS introduction and application process of LG Electronics and SAMSUNG Electronics, Semiconductor Division. On a different areas of business items, different strategic approaches are developed and implemented on a two comparable domestic companies. Key success factors for two companies are analysed, and some issues are also discussed.

To survive in rapidly changing business environment, the enterprises of all over the world are trying to integrate their IT infra structure and are trying to automate their business process. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is being accepted as an IT standard to support efficient system integration and flexible business process automation between enterprises or departments. The material control system is required this software architecture between manufacturing company and materials supply vendors. This paper introduces concept of SOA, relevant technology about SOA such as Web Services and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and describes how to automate materials control process by designing the material control system based on SOA. The analysis of requirements is proceeded by Unified Modeling Language (UML) and SOA delivery strategy is selected the top-down strategy. And this paper describes how to derive services and operations and how to arrange services in three service layers and how to design business process.

When a company makes a decision on an investment for a new product as a source for a new program, it is not easy for them to take a proper decision-making process in this highly volatile market. There could be several ways to make an investment decision on a new program. A company needs to choose the most suitable way of investment which is reflected current corporate circumstances and potential risks. We check up the process of the engineering economic decision in a automotive part manufacturing company. We define the gap between the theory and practice on engineering economic decisions. We present advices to make a decision desirably.

Semiconductor manufacturing is one of the most complex and capital-intensive processes composed of several hundreds of operations. In today’s competitive business environments, it is more important than ever before to manage manufacturing process effectively to achieve better performances in terms of customer satisfaction and productivity than those of competitors. So, many semiconductor manufacturing companies implement advanced planning and scheduling (APS) system as a management tool for the complex semiconductor manufacturing process. In this study, we explain roles of production planning and scheduling in semiconductor manufacturing and principal factors that make the production planning and scheduling more difficult. We describe the APS system implementation project at Korean semiconductor manufacturing company in terms of key issues with realistic samples.

Success of semiconductor/LCD industry depends on its yield and quality of product. For the purpose, FDC (Fault Detection and Classification) system is used to diagnose fault state in main manufacturing processes by monitoring time series data collected by equipment sensors which represent various conditions of the equipment. The data set is segmented at the start and end of each product lot processing by a trigger event module. However, in practice, segmented sensor data usually have the features of data asynchronization such as different start points, end points, and data lengths. Due to the asynchronization problem, false alarm (type I error) and missed alarm (type II error) occur frequently. In this paper, we propose a robust process fault detection system by integrating a process event detection method and a similarity measuring method based on dynamic time warping algorithm. An experiment shows that the proposed system is able to recognize abnormal condition correctly under the asynchronous data situation.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of Identification Technologies today. Many of the large retailers in the United States and Europe have established requirements for their suppliers to use RFID technology in 2004. Recently Airbus and Boeing have announced plans to develop a single RFID specification to be used by both companies to use RFID tags to identify commercial aircraft parts. However, it does not mean the end of barcode and it may take several years before the wide adoption of the RFID. This is because a precise business process reengineering is required with technology itself to get the potential benefits of RFID. In this paper, we introduce an RFID enabled air baggage handling process which has been developed and tested recently. We believe our study would give a good guideline for further researches on RFID application in the aviation industry.

By an explosive increase of proxy driving, customers require the quick and correct services of call center. But because most call centers have an unsystematic management system, grievance of customers is continually increasing. To solve these problem, we constructed a call center system of proxy driving that is based on CTI (Computer Telephony Integration) in this paper. The proposed system is constructed using CID (Caller Identify Display) terminal, SMS (Short Message Service) and call center management program etc. Customer service level could be improved through efficient customer management by using the proposed system. Also it could be convenient and easy to implement customer management, order management, staff management, SMS and settlement of accounts.

The service industry is becoming greater importance in the current economy. The service quality has become an important competitive factor in service industry. Until now, 6 sigma method has well accomplished in manufacturing industry. 6 sigma method has been applied to the service industry to improve service quality, but it has not been reported that 6 sigma method is a successful method for service industry to improve service quality. In this paper, we suggest a MAVIC model to improve service quality. It is a model which is combined with advantages of a SERVQUAL model and 6 sigma method. We has proved its effect with applying a MAVIC model to real service techniques.

Because the coins of about 920 billion are hoarded during these ten years, the national treasury of about 35 billion wons is wasted in minting coins every year. In this paper we promote to revitalize the circulation of coins through the connection with the financial world. Firstly embedded software that is contained in the coin banking ATM is developed. Then we developed new business process model that does customer spend coins efficiently in online through this system. The system constructed in this paper can contribute to the public interest and the marketability of the nation because of reducing waste of the national treasury and improving utilization and negotiability of coins.

As the logistics management becomes more important with the enormous amount of competition at every level of apparel retailing, the Korean apparel companies are expanding logistics outsourcing for providing to consumers better service. This paper studied about apparel logistics service quality, focusing on the transport part. The results of this study showed that the apparel companies evaluated highly their logistics outsourcing service quality that provided from the logistics companies. The logistics companies were providing high quality logistics service to the apparel companies with relatively advanced service infrastructures such as transportation management system and logistics network, as well as improved service abilities such as exact transport and relationship management. Also, it was identified that the satisfaction with apparel transport service quality gave positive influence on recontract intention toward the logistics companies.

Beyond SERVQUAL-based service quality research, we develop a measurement model of public service quality that would provide researchers and practitioners in the public sector with a foundation for systematic investigation and implementation. Firstly, we explore the attributes of public service quality that lead to customer satisfaction by using the critical incident technique (CIT). We identified four dimensions of public service qualities. We also found that the critical attributes of service quality differ according to the types of customers. Secondly, to achieve a high degree of empirical confidence, we conduct statistical tests and analyses on the classification scheme and on the attributes of service quality that we derived from the CIT analysis. Through these analyses, we could remove the redundancy among attributes and group the attributes into new constructs, which are mutually exclusive and exhaustive; we built a more sophisticated measurement model of service quality.

This paper proposed the calculation method of the avoided cost for natural gas and district heating DSM programs. And the proposed method is applied to real DSM programs. The avoided cost for natural gas consists of commodity avoided cost, supply equipment avoided cost, storage equipment avoided cost, and electric power avoided cost. In case of the district heating, avoided cost consists of heat generation equipment avoided cost, heat energy avoided cost, environment avoided cost, and electric power avoided cost. This method can be used to evaluate the benefit of DSM programs quantitatively in cost. Therefore, this method can contribute to make the cost-effectiveness evaluation system and to operate the DSM programs for natural gas and district heating effectively.

Under the fast technology changes and budget constraints, the organizations related to national defense face increased demands to develop innovative strategy and methodology to maximize performance with drastically reduced cost. In this context, the management of innovation and change in the defense acquisition area is vital to the Ministry of National Defense, related organizations and industries. In this paper, we discuss three comprehensive innovation strategies and methodologies for the defense acquisition area preparing for next-generation warfare; EVMS (earned value management system), PBL (performance based logistics) and SBA (simulation based acquisition). These collaborating innovative efforts enable us to tackle defense challenges for government and industries with a flexible and optimistic approach that maximizes productivity and performance with minimum cost.

The analytic hierarchy process (AHP), a well-known and useful decision making method, has been applied to R&D project evaluation and selection. The objective of this study is to propose a new model for evaluating and selecting R&D projects of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the top manufacturer of electronic components in Korea, using the AHP. To show the validity of the new model, we strived to successively compare the final priorities for R&D projects with the priorities obtained by the existing model and the new model respectively.

Numerous countries promote business programs to revitalize local economy, increase employment, and nurture high-tech industries. Recently, a number of business incubators have been established and operated with aims to adapt to changing environment and increase economic competitiveness in Korea. To give satisfactory results of governmental policy, the requirement to develop the evaluation model to support effective operations of business incubators using the objective and rational criteria is growing. The purpose of this study is to develop evaluation model in Business Incubator using Data Mining Process. We suggested the evaluation model of business incubator, 'Score-5 RS' consists of making evaluation factor process using weighted sum and 5-grade classification and analyzing process by Decision Tree algorithm.

In the telecommunication industry, estimation of the cost of network facilities is very important since depreciation cost of the facilities accounts for a large portion of the product cost. Moreover, cost estimation in the industry becomes more difficult because of increasing indirect cost upon digital convergence, expanding multi-purpose facilities, complexity of service product, etc. Nevertheless, not much seem to have been done in improving estimation methodology of the cost of network facilities. As a result, the quality of cost information on network facilities has deteriorated, and now even decision-makers in the industry dismiss the information. Recently, two major telecommunication companies adopted a new network cost estimation method to deal with the issue. In this paper, we study the concept of new cost estimation method and the procedure to develop and apply it. We also suggest the method to carry out the cost allocation using Matlab which is more efficient and time-saving than other commercial cost calculation packages.

Owing to a real-time innovative infrastructure driven by destructive technology revolution, the business environment has been changed dramatically. In order to respond fast to a continuously and unpredictably changing business environment, the business entities, such as business process participants, customers, distributers, and partners, should have an agile paradigm which is able to acquire and share the real time information adaptively. As a 21st century business paradigm having such adaptability and responsiveness has been introduced and called the "Real-Time Enterprise (RTE)" strategy. In this paper, we investigate the various innovation cases adopting the RTE strategy. After briefly addressing the concept and the value of RTE strategy, we discuss the models and the frameworks used in outstanding international and domestic enterprises. We believe that this case study can provide a good guide to many enterprises planning to adopt a RTE strategy for building competitive advantage in today's world of global competition.

This study is to suggest the government's support direction for the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) by examining the relations among technology level, innovation factors, entrepreneur's characteristics, and start-up reasons. The management bottlenecks and the necessary fields of government's support are also investigated across the company's growth stages. Empirical analysis was conducted based on the 318 Korean SMEs' data receiving the Venture and/or Inno-biz certification. Results show that managing difficulties of the company have typical pattern according to the stage of growth. The characteristics of an entrepreneur such as age, education background and past experience affect the early stage of starting business. We also found that the technology level is closely connected with operational innovation activities and circumstances, entrepreneur's characteristics, start-up motives, and technological innovation activities.
