To investigate the water balance in a paddy rice field with the pumping station for irrigation water supply, flow measurements and analysis on various components of water balance were carried out. The investigated area is 103.7 ha, and the irrigation water was supplied for 102 days during the total irrigation period starting from June 1. It was found that the consumption rate was increased as the growing stage was progressed. The variation of evapotranspiration rate was shown same tendency as the consumption rate, while no apparent tendency was found in infiltration rate upon different growing stages. And the ground water input to the area was predominant during the early stage of growing period, while ground water output from the study area was predominant at the end of the growing stage. The range of return flow rate, the ratio of total outflow to total inflow in every decad, was 57.6 to 85.7%. These values are slightly higher than reported values from the other investigation projects.

The existing flood runoff models, Complex Hydrograph and HEC-1, have some problems which do not properly represent runoff characteristics on the Korean paddy basin and their basin slopes. In this study, FAS(Flood Analysis System) was developed in order to supplement those problems, which was built calibrating runoff curve number for paddy basin and applying basin slopes to classify 5 levels. And also the FAS can synthesize the flood hydrographs of subbasin and analyze flood routing along a stream. To verify the applicability of the FAS, the computed flood hydrographs were compared with the observed hydrographs from the four watersheds. In the small basin smaller than 10
$\textrm{km}^2$ , the results of the FAS did not completely agree with the observed ones due to concentration time delay of paddy storage effect while in the medium and large size basin showed good agreements between the observed and computed ones. Therefore, it was concluded that the FAS could be applied for the flood analysis of Korean watershed which was characterized by paddy storage effect. -

The characteristics of agricultural water rights in multi-purpose dams in Korea was examined. The river system with multi-purpose dams can be divided into national river system and WRC(Water Resources Corporation) river system according to ownership of dam use rights. While the national river system have permitted water rights, the WRC river system have vest water rights and contract water rights. The two river systems have different characteristics of agricultural water rights, and therefore the water right of two system need to be unified. It is also known that water release from multi-purpose dams against water demand does not satisfy agricultural water rights.

It is difficult to know how to restrict the amount of water supply in the drought season, because there is no objective standard rules. The purpose of the study is to present management rules to overcome the drought in the irrigation reservoir by forecasting the water level and restricting water supply according to the operation rule curve and the pattern of rotation-irrigation system. From the operation rule curve drawn up by analyzing the observed water level of reservoir, the water supply rules and rotation-irrigation patterns using WWW and GIS are suggested.

Among several indices that have been proposed and adopted in different disciplines of sciences, standardized precipitation index, SPI by McKee et al. (1993) was applied to evaluate drought severity for historical rainfall records. Monthly SPI in Seoul station was reviewed in this study, in an effort to characterize the drought intensities during 1994. The SPI drought frequency decreases inversely with monthly time scales of different spans, while the drought duration increases. March, 1994 was found to be the most severe for the three month period, and was recognized as the beginning month of the historical drought spans. Drought intensities became less severe during May and June. SPI becomes greater from July to September particularly in eastern parts of the country.

The ultrasonic pulse measurements can be used to detect the development of cracks in concrete structures and to check deterioration due to frost or chemical action. An estimate of the depth of a visible crack at the surface can be obtained by measuring the transit times that across the crack for two different arrangements of the transducers placed on the surface. In this paper, the concrete cracks that artificially introduced crack of width 1, 2mm and depth 20, 40, 60, 80mm were measured by Tc-To, Direct and Indirect Method. The test results indicate that the Tc-To Method is the most useful in measuring crack of concrete structures. And the crack depth calculated by the Direct and Indirect Method is shown bigger than artificially introduced real crack depth.

In structural analysis using FEM or BEM, pre_ and post_processor is necessary pre_ and post_processor and analyzer use same structural model. But many other tasks related to structural design, such as optimization, design of layout, etc, do not share that model in spite of their resemblance of requiring data. So, a pre_ and post_ processor was developed using a relational database managing system. Developed system uses the DBMS as a data storage and interacts with it using SQL interface. In this way, many other tasks that uses same structural data can be developed.

The most important thing to consider in cold store design are to save cooling energy consumption and to keep goods freshly. Specially there are many efforts to save energy with cold store in Korea. A building energy simulation program should be used to optimally select a cooling system to match the criteria of cooling rate and storage rate in a given cool crop storage building and HVAC system. The low maintenance costs, high degree of safety and environmental impacts are also favouring the underground solution. There are obviously a lot of possibility for cost-effective storage of cooled or frozen goods or liquids in ground water rock.

This study was performed to figure out water consumption of the twisted sweet pepper in a greenhouse. Obtained results are as follows; 1. The ambient temperature was nearly same as the normal year, while the average air temperature and the relative humidity in the green house were little bit higher than those of the outside condition. The transparency of the greenhouse roof was approximately 50%. The total amount of rainfall during the irrigation period was 1,040㎜ which is 350㎜ higher than 1997 during the same period. 2. In case of pot cultivation, as the saturation ratio was increased, the aeaf area and plant height and yield were also increased. The yield from the field cultivation was higher than the average yield from the pot cultivations which are treated by three levels of saturation ratio. 3. The variation of daily consumptive use of the twisted sweet pepper was very large in it's range. In case of the pot cultivation, as the saturation was increased, the daily and the total consumptive use were increased. 4. The daily consumptive use was strongly correlated with the ambient temperature, while it was weakly correlated with the relative humidity and solar radiation. 5. There were close correlation between plant environment; leaf area, plant height and yield, and consumptive use. As the saturation ratio was increased, the correlation between those plant factors and consumptive use was getting stronger.

Salt accumulation is frequently experienced in soils under protected cultivation. Since protected cultivation does not have rainfall and resulting infiltration, salt accumulation in the soils is inevitable. In this study, analyzed were chemical charecteristics of soils under protected cultivation to investigate the factors which may contribute the salt accumulation. Soil samples were collected from 99 protected cultivation facilities around An-sung Gun, Gyungki-Do and analyzed for electrical conductivity, pH, organic matter con-tents. The results showed that there was no significant trend of changes in electrical conductivity and pH along cultivation years. the only factor influencing salt accumulation was irrigation type. Soils in facilities using drip irrigation showed higher electrical conductivity than those using diversion-hose type irrigation.

The recent greenhouses are extremely light-weight structures and easily damaged by the strong winds due to the lack of uplift capacity of pile foundations. The uplift capacity of pile foundations are subject to the shape of the pile surface, diameter, weight, and embedded depths. etc. So, it is very important to figure out the most appropriate conditions on shape of the pile surface and it's embedding depths. to improve wind proof capability of pipe greenhouses. In this study, plane and corrugated pile surfaces were examined on their uplift capacity with 30 to 50 cm of embedding depths. The diameters of tested piles were 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm, respectively. Compaction ratio of the tested soil was 80%. Each test run was repeated three times for the respective treatment. Obtained results are as follows; In all cases, as the diameter and the embedding depth were increased, the ultimate uplift capacity of the pile was also increased. And it was clear that the ultimate uplift capacity of corrugated pile was approximately two times as big as that of plain piles under same conditions.

The south-western part of Korea is situated in an unbalance of water supply and demand relating to the Keum, Mankyung, Dongjin and Youngsan River and their estuary reservoirs. For example, the Keum River estuary reservoir is discharging the larger amount of yearly runoff into the sea due to the small storage capacity, while Saemankeum estuary reservoir which is under construction, has the smaller runoff amount comparing with its storage capacity, And the downstream area of the Youngsan River, such as Youngkwang, Youngam are deficient in water due in larger demand and smaller supply. In order to solve the above unbalanced water supply and demand and also to improve the water use efficiency, the Hierarchical Operation Model for Multi-reservoir System(HOMMS) has been developed and applied to analyze the multi-reservoir operation assuming that the above reservoirs were linked each other. The result of this study shows that 2,148MCM of annual additional water requirement for agricultural and rural water demands are required in this region at 2011 of target year, and these demands can be resolved by diverting and reusing 1,913MCM of the released water from the estuary reservoirs into the sea.

FEM numerical models have been known to provide an extensive applicability to the field of water resources development. However, some of restrictions such as requiring considerable number of input data and numerous subprocess were the problem of using such FEM numerical models. Especially, where the model is applied to the complex coastal area, difficulties will be intensified. Therefore it is necessary that the profitable user interface, data optimization, and structured system should be developed if the models could be used effectively. In this study, it is intended that development of integrated system for simulations of FEM numerical models to give better applicability in the field of water resources development. By using integrated system which was developed in this study, it would be concluded that the efforts to need some treatments for subprocesses of the FEM numerical model were decreased and GUI environment proved to be convinient for use for the on-the-job users.

In many circumstances, it is infeasible to simulate the daily water yield in every land use or soil type of the watershed or river basin. These situations can be simulated in“Soil and Water Assessment Tool”(SWAT) using a concept called“hydrologic response units”(HRU's) within a topographically-defined subbasin. Soil water balance, crop growth, nutrient cycling management, etc., are simulated for each HRU For the watershed of Bok-ha river, the effect of HRU's in SWAT has been studied in respect to water yield. The optimum number of HRU's was 23 based in data capacity and correlation coefficient.

GRASS-AGNPS model integrated with GIS was applied to rural watersheds having complex land use characteristics and evaluated for its applicability through calibration using observed data. The analyses of raster encoding accuracy and model behavior to runoff, sediment yields and nutrient loads for different cell-size showed that 150 m cell size indicated reasonable applicability of the model. Simulated runoff was in a good agreement with the observed data and simulated peak runoff rate was larger than the observed data. The sediment yield simulated by modified AGNPS model using irregular cell for forest area were less than that of the regular cell method. In predicting sediment yields, the result showed a different trend at each representative rural watershed. Nutrient loads simulated by the model were significantly different from the observed data.

Triaxial compression tests were run to study on the undrained strength characteristics of fiber mixed kaolin clay(Hadong). The influence of various test parameters such as amount and aspect ratio(ratio of length to diameter) of fiber, confining stress was also investigated. Test results showed that the increase in aspect ratio was increased in deviator stress at failure, but no effect on pore water pressure at failure. Deviator stress at failure was also increased at 0.5% mixing ratio(weight fraction of fiber to that of soil solid) of fiber but it was, thereafter, decreased and wits reached to constant after 2% mixing ratio. On the contrary, Pore water pressure at failure was increased as mixing ratio of fiber was greater than 1%. Deviator stress and pore water pressure of both clay and fiber mixed clay(FMC) at failure were increased as confining stress was increased. Deviator stress of FMC at failure was about 10% larger than that of clay, but pore water pressure of FMC at failure was almost similar to that of clay.

This study aimed at the technique for the construction control in braced excavation works. Selecting a case of Kwangju subway works, field observational values were compared with prediction using Plaxis's. Maximum observational values relevant to both horizontal and vertical proved satisfactory in that they were within the criteria. Numerical results by used Plaxis were overestimated greater than observational values, which meant the prediction were safe tendency. .It must be emphasized that displacement measurement for neighboring important structures should be carried out in order to take countermeasure charge for construction methods, in case that the risk or failure was previewed.

Considerable progress has been made in the application of time-domain reflectrometry(TDR) to measurement of soil water content. The TDR provides a means of monitoring the water content of soil over a wide range of values, in the field and in the laboratory The TDR measures the volumetric moisture content of the soil via a bureid sensor(probe). Probes can be buried and monitored remotely and an immediate result can be obtained. In addition to, the results are very reliable.

This study was carried out to analyze permeability of steel slag. Three molds with the same grading of raw steel slag were used to measure the coefficient of permeability. Darcy's law could be applied to the steel slag below 0.5 of critical hydraulic gradient because the water flow changed from laminar flow to turbulent flow above the critical hydraulic gradient. Also, the velocity of flow changed according to hydraulic gradient. The coefficient of permeability of the specimen was
$\alpha$ $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ cm/ sec. -
The deduction methods for forced displacement depths caused by sea dike construction often assumed the shape of forced displacements and heaving. To investigate the shape of forced displacements and heaving, a model tests was performed. Results of the tests are as follows; 1) The shape of forced displacements can be assumed ellipse. 2) The shape of heaving can not be assumed uniform shape like a circle and Extents of heaving was varied with the loading height and width. 3) The shape of forced displacements caused by step construction, pebble embankments and soil embankments, also investigated.

The theory of consolidation has been achieved remarkable development, but associated properties are very difficult to determine in the laboratory. The theoretical shortcomings of those consolidation theories and uncertainties of associated properties make inevitably some discrepancy between theoretical and field settlements. Field settlement measurement by settlement plate is, therefore, widely used to overcome the discrepancy. Among the various methods of ultimate settlement predictions using field settlement data, hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method are most commonly used because of their simplicity and ability to give a reasonable estimate of consolidation settlement. In this paper, the applicability of hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method has been estimated by the analysis of the laboratory consolidation test and field measured data. It is shown that both hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method are significantly affected by the direction of drainage, and Asaoka's method is better to reflect the properties of the soft foundation than hyperbolic method.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the compaction and compressive strength of polypropylene fiber reinforced soils. This study has been performed to obtain the physical properties of PFRS(polypropylene fiber reinforced soil) such as strain-stress relationships, OMC(optimum moisture contents) and
${\gamma}$ $_{dmax}$ (maximum dry unit weight), with four different concentrations(i.e., 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0% weights) of mono-filament and fibrillated polypropylene fibers. The test results indicate an appreciable increase in strength due to addition of fibers. OMC is increased with the concentration ratio of fiber, but${\gamma}$ $_{dmax}$ is decreased. From the viewpoint of strength, the fibrillated polypropylene fiber soil is more effective than the mono-filament polypropylene fiber soil.oil. -
This study was performed of the research for accurate prediction of consolidation settlement at initial consolidation time. In order to analysis the program is developed which is able to analysis behavior of settlement caused by gradual load increment, and simulated consolidation using whole measured settlement data and that from beginning of embankment to end of it. The former result agrees with measured data and the latter it overestimated 13% larger than measured data. It was found the time which takes to be eliminated effect of gradual step load. This method is compared with the results from Asaoka, Hyperbolic and Tan's hyperbolic method respectively Asaoka and Tan's hyperbolic methods we in good agreement with this method. But classical hyperbolic method overestimated about 32%.

This study performed to establish tile characteristics of constant rate of strain consolidation(CRSC) tests. The values obtained by the CRCS tests were compared with oedometer tests. From the comparision of the results of oedometer and CRSC tests for soft soil from Haenam, Korea, it was concluded that. 1. When rate of strain is 0.9mm/hr, compression curve of CRSC test was not coincided with those of tile oedometer test, then preconsolidation stress was larger than those of other rates of strain. 2. Permeabilities from CRSC tests and direct measurements were about same each other, but permeabilities from Oedometer tests were large than those from others.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of unconfined compressive strength(UCS) of dry soil which was reinforced with short polypropylene fiber(SPPF). And the results were summarized as follows: 1. As water content was increased, unconfined compressive strength and strain of dry soil with no fiber added were decreased 2. As mixing ratio of fiber was increased, unconfined compressive strength and strain at failure of dry soil reinforced with SPPF were increased. 3. When mixing ratio was larger than 0.5%, unconfined compressive strength was gradually increased. 4. The longer fiber was, the larger post peak strength was obtained and the larger strain was reached.

Dead animals amended with agricultural rersidues are utilized ai a compost to promote soil fertility and reduce environmental pollution by traditional methods of livestock mortalities. The full-scale bin composting swine mortality in roofed system with three amendments was very successful in reaching sufficient temperature above 55
$^{\circ}C$ long enough for pathogen kill. The average temperature of tile compost material in dead swine amended with corn stover increased rapidly to 64$^{\circ}C$ on the 2nd day after primary composting and dropped to near ambient temperature on the 140th day of composting. The composting temperature of corn stover and wheat straw is more efficient for swine carcass composting than that of sawdust. -
Many computer models have been used for estimating the water quality and evaluating countermeasures. The models such as QUAL2E, STREAM, WASP, CE-QUAL have been applied in the waters so far. Some modeller assumed either that the flow of the waters is steady or that the storage change of the waters is negligible. And someone excluded hydraulic part from the quality simulation. It may cause inaccurate estimations of water flow and quality, particularly when the waters have seawards boundary and more inflow than outflow, etc. In order to show the velocity vector for water quality simulation of Paldang lake in dynamic condition, RMA-2 was performed with the water quantity data in 1997.

The GLEAMS nutrient submodel was evaluated to predict nutrient losses in surface runoff following application of two rates (9 and 18 t/ha) of poultry litter and a recommended rate of commercial fertilizer on corn plots. Nutrient submodel was evaluated with calibrated runoff and sediment losses to the observed field data. Simulation of nitrogen transformation effects on nitrogen losses in surface runoff did not agree with field data. The model simulated higher NH
$_4$ -N than NO$_3$ -N losses in surface runoff, while field data showed the opposite. -
This study was initiated to investigate the applicability of sludge from water or waste water treatment on the crop cultivation. Sludge is generated in the process of water and wastewater treatment process in large quantity. The sludge can cause many environmental problems. we have a many available treatment methods of sludge However, these methods still shortcomings and are not. The composition of typical municipal sludge contains organics and inorganics. The organics components are normally burnt in high temperature and mainly inorganics components are left after thermal treatment process. For the production of artificial media, chabazite was used as additive, and the mixed material was thermally treated in the firing kiln at 800~1,10
$0^{\circ}C$ for about 10 minutes. The physical and chemical characteristics of artificial media were analyzed and it showed that the artificial media could be used as a media for plants and soil conditioner for farmland. The concentrations of the toxic heavy metals in the media were lower then those in the soil quality standard for farmland. This study illustrated that the artificial media production process, and introduced how to produce it's possible application as a media for Plant growth. -
The measures for water quality improvement have been planned to introduce for several reservoirs which were badly polluted among the sites included in the Network of Agricultural Water Quality Survey (NAWQS). Considering conditions of circumstances around reservoirs, self-purification systems such as natural ecosystem, oxidation ponds with plants, grassed waterways, weirs, and manmade plant-islands are taking into account enhancing to trap nutrients in waters running off from agricultural lands. The Pollutant Run off Ratios were analysed to predict the effects of water quality improvement for self-purification systems. The cost of water quality improvement was evaluated. The correlation equation between cost and irrigation area showing high correlation coefficient was derived.

The inflow and outflow loads of T-N and T-P from a paddy field area during the irrigation period were investigated. For the concentration of T-N and T-P, surface water in paddies showed highest among irrigation water, drainage water and percolation water. For T-N, the average concentration of drainage water is higher than that of irrigation water before middle of June but is lower since. It is shown that the L(load)-Q (discharge) equation of T-N has high correlation for irrigation water, but the L-Q equation of T-P has high correlation for drainage water.

Reaeration coefficient is the physical absorption of oxygen from the atmosphere by water. It is the most important natural means by which a stream replaces the oxygen consumed in the biodegradation of organic wastes, and the rate constant describing this process is the reaeration coefficient, It. Reaeration coefficient is the dominant parameter affecting the use of water quality model. Therefore accurate estimation of the reaeration coefficient is essential for optimum water quality management. There is several method to estimate stream reaeration coefficient. In this study, it would be concluded that SI-peak method is of practical use when applied to small stream, and CRI method is adequate to large stream.

Sampling schemes are intended for use in situations where stream-flow data are collected regularly, but concentration data are collected during only a limited number of time periods. Estimating water pollutant loading considering sampling intervals is presented, and for illustrative purposes the criterion is applied to the sampling station HS#3 of the Balan-reservoir watershed which is located at the southwest of Suwon. The stratification is employed uniformly for all sampling strategies in that the strata boundaries are defined using the actual distribution of flow values and the selected nonexceedence probabilities to minimize inaccuracy. Ratio estimator for SS, T-N, and T-P were used in order to calculate the water pollutant loading. A sampling scheme incorporating stratified sampling with real-time of the sampling characteristics is found to give the appropriate estimate of the mass load.
