Since 1990s in Korea, elementary school classrooms have been designed toward open education system in pursuit of variety of educational purpose. Also, the architectural designs of schools have been acomplished for individual school not based on the standard design code. The present paper aims to investigate the acoustic environment of existing classrooms and to compare the sound insulation capacity between the ordinary classrooms and the newly built classrooms for open education. The current acoustical situation of elementary classrooms was analyzed using field measurements and questionnaire survey. In order to this, Three elementary schools were selected which were built in 1978, 1996 and 2000 respectively. Room acoustical parameters including Reverberation time(RT), Definition(D50), Speech Intelligibility(RASTI), Transmission loss(TL) and STC were measured in a classroom in each elementary school classroom. Each measurement was undertaken with the windows and doors being open or closed. As the result, it was found that the transmission loss between rooms in open classrooms is, $5{\sim}6dB$ in average, inferior than the ordinary classrooms. The RASTI of 0.70 was measured in newly built classrooms which is better than old classrooms(0.70) and open classrooms(0.73). This was shown as same in the speech definition measurements. This results from the condition of sealing and airtightness of classrooms and floor materials. The results denote that open classrooms have poor acoustic condition in sound insulation and speech intelligibility.

Deterioration of the educational facilities built before 1985 is a serious situation. The purpose of this study is to present the efficient remodeling method of old educational facilities. This paper, part III, presents the systemic and synthetic judgment method of deterioration grade of finished materials. Evaluation of the deterioration is carried out in every eight classrooms or building elements divided by the use. And classrooms are divided by several parts for example floor, wall and ceiling etc.. The whole deterioration of the building judges the result of every part collectively.

This study is derived from a problem for the blind, how to recognize the space and how to find their way. Unlike ordinary people, the disabled people are closely related with special constructor environment using the other sense. Especially, to find his/her location, each person depends on the wayfinding ability as acquiring specific and various information,(e.g. recognizing figure by tactile sense, space size by auditory sense, direction by light from a window and regular noise, and existence of switch in a specific place.) Those senses help the person's wayfinding to his/her destination. The procedure of wayfinding are location, position, orientation, navigation, and movement. Consequently, construction for the people above mentioned can offer a design-guideline considering following factors, building arrangement considering regular noise, refurbishment, plan configuration of floor and wall-skin changed, circulation stream that maintains right angle by the regular noise in the building, enforcement location character by the inflow of the light into a crossing.

The objective of this study is to propose the architectural basic data for the planning of kindergarten attached to the elementary school. For this study, we selected and investigated 23kindergartens in Gwangju city. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The elementary school in separated style had the advantage of securing educational space and reducing interference with students of elementary school. But it had the problem in using the facilities of elementary school. So we have to consider the kindergarten to be located near by dinning room, multi-purpose hall. 2) Concentrating the entrance, it makes the inside and outside space use easily. For the actual use, we have to establish facilities for convenience in outer-space. 3) For each room, we suggest guides as follow. The classroom and the playroom have to be combined for flexibility and supervision. In the planning of toilet, it must have sliding door for confirm the inside situation and reasonable height partition to consider the student's body-size. The shape of teacher's room must be open-type for supervising children but protect the entry of children. There is consideration for the material room and the sleeping room for all-day-long class.

The Architects' design process is subjective and mysterious'. If we can reveal this process, it will be very helpful to proceed similar design projects. In the aspect of steel production, Korea is a strong country, but in the aspect of steel usage, Korea does not show its impacts as compared with other countries'. Even though steel has many merits in design as well as in structure, in Korea we have not applied it as design elements. In this situation, the demand of steel in school buildings is increasing, but steel also is used only on the basis of the structural and material meaning. So this thesis tries to find design elements of steel structure buildings, which can be applied in school buildings, through the analysis of existing steel structure buildings and the characteristics of steel.
