Hydrocyclone is widely used in industry, because of its simplicity in design, high capacity, low maintenance and operational cost. The separation action of a hydrocyclone treating particulate slurry is a consequence of the swirling flow that produces a centrifugal force on the fluid and suspended particles. In spite of hydrocyclone have many advantage, the application for treatment of urban stormwater case study were rare. We conducted a laboratory scale study on treatable potential of micro particles using hydrocyclone filter (HCF) that was a combined modified hydrocyclone with perlite filter cartridge. Since it was not easy to use actual storm water in the scaled-down hydraulic model investigations, it was necessary to reproduce ranges of particles sizes with synthetic materials. The synthesized storm runoff was made with water and addition of particles; ion exchange resin, road sediment, commercial area manhole sediment, and silica gel particles. Experimental studies have been carried out about the particle separation performance of HCF-open system and HCF-closed system. The principal structural differences of these HCFs are underflow zone structure and vortex finder. HCF was made of acryl resin with 120 mm of diameter hydrocyclone and 250 mm of diameter filter chamber and overall height of 800 mm. To determine the removal efficiency for various influent concentrations of suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), tests were performed with different operational conditions. The operated maximum of surface loading rate was about 700 $m^3/m^2$/day for HCF-open system, and 1,200 $m^3/m^2$/day for HCF-closed system. It was found that particle removal efficiency for the HCF-closed system is better than the HCF-open system under same surface loading rate. Results showed that SS removal efficiency with the HCF-closed system improved by about 8~20% compared with HCF-open system. The average removal efficiency difference for HCF-closed system between measurement and CFD particle tracking simulation was about 4%.

A two-dimensional shallow-water flow around a cavity driven by a sinusoidally oscillating external flow was studied numerically. A container model of "T" shape was constructed in the numerical computation for comparison with the experimental observation. The numerical computation shows that the aspect ratio of the cavity is not much affecting the overall flow pattern, and for the aspect ratio 2, the deep region of the cavity has a stagnant flow motion. At larger Reynolds number, the flow field is characterized by many small vortices which are not present in the flow visualization. The flow pattern in the external region is in good agreement with the experimentally recorded particle trajectories. It turns out that two large coherent vortices situated in the exterior region of the cavity are responsible for clockwise and counterclockwise drift motions, in large scale, of particles.particles.
Three dimensional unsteady numerical calculations were performed to investigate unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow in an axial compressor. The first stage of the four-stage low-speed research axial compressor was examined. Since this compressor has a relatively large tip clearance, the unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow is induced. Through the results from the unsteady calculations, the process of the induced unsteady tip leakage flow was investigated. It was shown that the leakage flow that occurred at a rotor blade tip clearance affected the pressure distribution on the pressure side near the tip of the adjacent blade, thus caused the fluctuation of the pressure difference between the pressure side and suction side. Consequently, the unsteady tip leakage flow was induced at the adjacent rotor blade. The unsteady feature of the tip leakage flow was changed as the operating point was moved. The interface between the tip leakage flow and the main flow only affected the trailing edge region at the design point whereas the interface influenced up to the leading edge at the low flow rate point. As the flow rate decreased, additionally, it was seen that the vortex size of the tip leakage flow increased and the relatively large length scale disturbance occurred. On the other hand, using frequency analysis, it was shown that the unsteadiness was not associated with the rotor speed and was about 40% of the blade passing frequency. This feature was explained in the rotor relative frame of reference, and the frequency decreased as the flow rate decreased.

This paper describes the air flow characteristics inside the throttle valve. Tow-dimensional steady incompressible Navier-Strokes equation are solved numerically with embedding the conceopt of the artificial compressibility and adopting the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. With varying the valve opening angles(the Reynolds number )such as 15$^{\circ}$(5000) , 45$^{\circ}$(3000) , 75$^{\circ}$(7000) and 90$^{\circ}$(10000), respectively. tow cases, with a valve shaft and without one, are analysed. The pressure loss between the entrance and exit is severe at 15$^{\circ}$, 100 times as larger as that of 90$^{\circ}$ case, which also depends much on the existece of the valve shaft. The counter rotating vortices are formed over the valve plate with the shaft at only 75$^{\circ}$. They are smally and very large scale in front and back of the valve shaft , respectively. The velocity profiles of 15$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ at the exit are almost symmetric to the horizontal center line, however, the symmetricity is no longer maintained at 45$^{\circ}$ and 75$^{\circ}$ , and in addition, the flow at 75$^{\circ}$ is enforced a lot below center line. The pressure distribution on the walls is largely changed near the valve shaft, and its magnitude becomes great as the valve angle decreases.

The two-phase turbulent flow past an interface-piercing circular cylinder is studied using a high-fidelity orthogonal curvilinear grid solver with a Lagrangian dynamic subgrid-scale model for large-eddy simulation and a coupled level set and volume of fluid method for air-water interface tracking. The simulations cover the sub-critical and critical and post critical regimes of the Reynolds and sub and super-critical Froude numbers in order to investigate the effect of both dimensionless parameters on the flow. Significant changes in flow features near the air-water interface were observed as the Reynolds number was increased from the sub-critical to the critical regime. The interface makes the separation point near the interface much delayed for all Reynolds numbers. The separation region at intermediate depths is remarkably reduced for the critical Reynolds number regime. The deep flow resembles the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder, but includes the effect of the free-surface and the limited span length for sub-critical Reynolds numbers. At different Froude numbers, the air-water interface exhibits significantly changed structures, including breaking bow waves with splashes and bubbles at high Froude numbers. Instantaneous and mean flow features such as interface structures, vortex shedding, Reynolds stresses, and vorticity transport are also analyzed. The results are compared with reference experimental data available in the literature. The deep flow is also compared with the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder in the similar ranges of Reynolds numbers. Discussion is provided concerning the limitations of the current simulations and available experimental data along with future research.

Nonlinear shoaling characteristics over surf zone are numerically investigated based on spatially averaged NavierStokes equation. We also test the validity of gradient model for turbulent stresses due to wave breaking using the data acquainted during SUPERTANK LABORATORY DATA COLLECTION PROJECT(Krauss et al., 1992). It turns out that the characteristics length scale of breaking induced current is not negligible, which firmly stands against ever popular gradient model, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model, but favors Large Eddy Simulation with finer grid. Based on these observations, we model the residual stress of spatially averaged NavierStokes equation after Lagrangian Dynamic Smagorinsky(Meneveau et al., 1996). We numerically integrate newly proposed wave equations using SPH with Gaussian kernel function. Severely deformed water surface profile, free falling water particle, queuing splash after landing of water particle on the free surface and wave finger due to structured vortex on rear side of wave crest(Narayanaswamy and Dalrymple, 2002) are successfully duplicated in the numerical simulation of wave propagation over uniform slope beach, which so far have been regarded very difficult features to mimic in the computational fluid mechanics.
The objective of this study is to perform hydraulic and numerical model experiments of the flows in circulation-water-pump(CWP) chambers of combined cycle power plants (CCPP) to be built and to suggest improvement plans if the flows might cause a serious problem on the operation of CWPs. Hydraulic model was constructed in a scale of 1 to 20 using acrylic sheets and a two dimensional numerical model used was RMA2. To evaluate results of Hydraulic and numerical model experiments, evaluation criteria of flow conditions in the intake canal and CWP chambers were determined. Vertical vorticities obtained from numerical simulations for the initial plan of CCPPs were qualitatively compared with results of hydraulic model experiments and the formation possibility of a large scale vortex, one of the flow evaluation criteria, was evaluated. The initial plan was found not to satisfy the flow evaluation. Nine improvement plans were devised and numerically simulated. Four alternative plans among nine improvement plans were selected and hydraulically experimented. On the ground of the results of hydraulic model experiments, a final improvement plan, one of four improvement plants, was suggested. When CWP chambers and intake canals were designed with spatial constraints, flow separating wall and guide walls were found to improve flow conditions in CWP chambers.

Wind tunnel test for a small scale electric ducted fan with a 104mm diameter was conducted to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics when it was used as a propulsion system of tilt-propeller UAV. Experimental conditions were derived from flight conditions of a sub-scaled OPPAV. Forces and moments of the ducted fan model were measured by a 6-axis balance and 3-dimensional wake vectors which could induce an aerodynamic influence in the vehicle were measured by 5-hole probes. Thrust and torque on hover and cruise conditions were measured and analyzed to drive out the operating conditions when it was applied in the sub-scaled OPPAV. On transition conditions, thrust keep its value with tilt angle variation below 40° and increase after that. But, sideforce increase constantly until 75°. The maximum axial velocity in the wake on hover and cruise conditions was around 60m/s and tangential velocity was around 12m/s. The position of the maximum axial velocity and vortex center move off the fan rotation center line as the tilt angle increases.

Residual calcium concentration is high, in general, at the effluent of the fluoride removal process in the electronics industry manufacturing semiconductor and LCD. To increase the stability of the membrane process incorporated for reuse of wastewater, the residual calcium is required to be pre-removed. Hyperkinetic Vortex Crystallization(HVC) process was installed in the electronics industry manufecturing semi conductor as a pilot scale for accelerating calcification of calcium ion. Compared to the conventional soda ash method, the 31% higher calcium removal efficiency was achieved when HVC was applied at the same sodium carbonate dosage. In order to maintain the economic calcium removal target of 70% preset by manufacturer, the dosing concentration of the soda ash was 530 mg/L based on influent flowrate. The seed concentration in the reactor was one of the critical factors and should be maintained in the range of $800\sim1,200mg$ SS/L to maximize the calcium removal efficiency. The calcite production rate was 0.30 g SS/g $Na_2CO_3$ in the average. The economic HVC passing time of the mixture was in the range of $2\sim5$ times. Relatively, stable calcium concentration was maintained in the range of $30\sim72$ mg/L(average 49 mg/L) although the calcium concentration in the feed was severely fluctuated with $74\sim359$ mg/L(average 173 mg/L). The HVC process was characterized as environment-friendly technology reducing chemical dosage and chemical sludge production and minimizing maintenance cost.
This study presents spatial characteristics of cloud using satellite image in the extreme heavy snowfall of the Yeongdong region. 3 extreme heavy snowfall events in the Yeongdong region during the recent 12 years (2001 ~ 2012) are selected for which the fresh snow cover exceed 50 cm/day. Spatial characteristics (minimum brightness temperature; Tmin, cloud size, center of cloud-cell) of cloud are analyzed by tracking main cloud-cell related with these events. These characteristics are compared with radar precipitation in the Yeongdong region to investigate relationship between cloud and precipitation. The results are summarized as follows, selected extreme heavy snowfall events are associated with the isolated, well-developed, and small-scale convective cloud which is developing over the Yeongdong region or moving from over East Korea Bay to the Yeongdong region. During the period of main precipitation, cloud-cell Tmin is low ($-40{\sim}-50^{\circ}C$) and cloud area is small (17,000 ~ 40,000 $km^2$). Precipitation area (${\geq}$ 0.5 mm/hr) from radar also shows small and isolated shape (4,000 ~ 8,000 $km^2$). The locations of the cloud and precipitation are similar, but in there centers are located closely to the coast of the Yeongdong region. In all events the extreme heavy snowfall occur in the period a developed cloud-cell was moving into the coastal waters of the Yeongdong. However, it was found that developing stage of cloud and precipitation are not well matched each other in one of 3 events. Water vapor image shows that cloud-cell is developed on the northern edge of the dry(dark) region. Therefore, at the result analyzed from cloud and precipitation, selected extreme heavy snowfall events are associated with small-scale secondary cyclone or vortex, not explosive polar low. Detection and tracking small-scale cloud-cell in the real-time forecasting of the Yeongdong extreme heavy snowfall is important.
