  • In this paper, the design of the RF system monitoring and control system of KUS (KASS: KASS Uplink Station) which constitutes KASS (Korea Augmentation Satellite System) is described. The Korean satellite calibration system is named KASS and aims to develop the SBAS system of the APV-1 level SoL service level and the CAT-1 test operation technology. Software and hardware development environment, function and algorithm of supervisory control device, structure of supervisory control device, and user interface were designed to implement KUS / RFS monitoring control device. We have secured the stability and reliability of the system by using the monitoring and control system design of the COMS (Communication Ocean & Meteorological Satellite) and the Korea Satellite 5A / 7 control system, which has already been used for the design of the surveillance control system. In addition, we have made it possible to provide the user interface according to the actual operator's request more conveniently.

  • Increased demand for military satellite communications system and due to the depletion of resources of existing satellite communications frequencies, Ka-band and EHF-band satellite communication systems is growing demand for development. As a result, the study of rain attenuation mitigation for Ka/EHF-band frequencies has been achieved. The method to compensate rain attenuation on Ka-band(20/30) using the signal power measurement function in Digital Transponder of Next Military Satellite has been proposed in this paper. This method is more effective than generally used method by Beacon and UPC(uplink power control) in giving the precise rain attenuation measurement and correction.

  • Upon introducing satellite communication system to korea, one of the important problems to copy with is the effect from the probable intentional interference i. e. jamming. In this paper, we have considered the M any PSK signal and the soft limiter type, which contains hard limiter, nonhnear satellite transponder in environments of uplink tone or noise jamming plus Gaussian noise and downlink Gaussian noise. Using the derived error rate equation, we have evaluated numerically the error performance of BPSK and QPSK system, and shown in figures in terms of upink and downink earner to jamming rater(CJR) and limiting level. From the results we have known that tone jamming effect on the error performance in BPSK and QPSK signals in nonlinear satelhie shnnel become less with increasing the uplink CNR and with decreasing the liniting level. And in a tone jamming, the limiting level affects hardly on the error performance of both BPSK and QPSK signals. When limiting leveri is zero, BPSK and QPSK signals show the best error rate performance.

  • Telecommand & telemetry control equipment is needed for the testing of the transponders during the development of satellite. This equipment must have a loopback function to perform the self testing without satellite. The fabrication of the designed system is easier and cheaper than the conventional testing system using direct modulation method. The measured results of fabricated equipment are satisfied with required specifications. A overall path loss of uplink and downlink is 47.8 dB and 42.6 dB, respectively. Also, IMD3 of uplink has measured 60.68 dBc at an output of -50 dBm.

  • Triplet Ionospheric Observatory (TRIO) CubeSatforIon, Neutral, Electron MAgneticfields (CINEMA) is a CubeSat with the weight 3 kg that will be operated in the orbit conditions of about 800 km altitude and $90^{\circ}$ inclination angle, using the S-band and ultra-high frequency (UHF)-band communication frequencies. Regarding the communication antenna loaded on the satellite, the two patch antennas has the downlink function in the S-band, whereas the two whip antennas has the function to receive the command sent by the ground station to the satellite in the UHF-band. The uplink ground station that communicates through the UHF-band with the CINEMA satellite was established at Kyung Hee University. The system is mainly composed of a terminal node controller, a transceiver, and a helical antenna. The gain of the helical antenna established at the Kyung Hee University ground station was 9.8 dBi. The output of the transceiver was set to be 5 W (6.9 dB) for the communication test. Through the far-field test of the established system, it was verified that the Roman characters, figures and symbols were converted into packets and transmitted to the satellite receiver in the communication speed of 9,600 bps.

  • Korea augmentation satellite system (KASS) integration, verification, qualification (IVQ) activity is verification of requirements for KASS system and its sub-system that were performed based on the inspection, analysis, review of design, test (IART) method from factory acceptance test (FAT) to test readiness review (TRR) after critical design review (CDR) was closed. In the FAT phase, developed equipment was installed on the test platform and we were verified interfaces between sub-systems and coupling test with the kass control station (KCS). In the site aceeptance test (SAT) phase, on-site verification was conducted by installing equipment verified by FAT such as kass reference station (KRS), kass processing station (KPS), kass uplink station (KUS), KCS. However, considering the developed plan and status, SAT was divided into 3 phases and coupling test was performed. In the TRR phase, the KASS system verification was performed through FAT's test list and additional test list using the satellite based augmentation system (SBAS) broadcast signal from geostationary earth orbit (GEO) 1.

  • We propose a timing-offset resilient OFDMA with achieving full diversity for uplink cooparative base station (BS) systems. In uplink OFDMA, timing offset (TO) among multiple users destroys subcarrier orthogonality and thus, it degrades the performance. In order to avoid this performance degradation, the accurate processing, so called 'ranging', is required to synchronize. However, in cooparative BS systems, it is difficult to perform ranging scheme. This is because if the ranging scheme is performed for a specific BS, timing offset has to occur for other BSs. Thus, the conventional ranging method cannot achieve full diversity gain in cooperative BS systems. By employing TO resilient OFDMA, so called, 'ZCZ time-spread OFDMA'. we achieve full diversity gain even with TO among multiple users. We show that the proposed scheme achieves the same performance with case of no multiple acces interference.

  • Upon introducing satellite communication system to Korea, one of the important problems to cope with is the effect from the probable intentional interference I.e. jamming. In this paper we have investigated how much the performance of ordinary PSK signal and Directed Sequence Spread Spectrum PSK signal degrade by the effect of jamming in the satellite communication system. In analysis we have consider the M ary PSK signal and the liniter type nonlinear satellite transponder in an environment of uplink tone or noise jamming plus Gaussian noise and downlink Gaussian noise. Using the derived error rate equation we have evaluated the error performance of BPSK and QPSK systems and compared this with that of DS BPSK system. Form the results, we know that the nonlinear satellite system is degraded more severely by the effect of noise jamming than tone jamming and the effect of tone jamming on the error rate performance can be reduced more remarkably by increasing the process gain in DS BPSK system rather than increasing carrier to jamming noise power ratio in conventional BPSK system.

  • High-level conceptual design analysis results of satellite communication system for Korea augmentation satellite system (KASS) satellite communication system, which is a part of KASS and consisted of KASS uplink Stations and two leased GEO is presented in this paper. We present major functions such as receiving correction and integrity message from central processing system, taking forward error correction for the message, modulating and up converting signal and conceptual design analysis for concepts for design process, GEO precise orbit determination for GEO ranging that is additional function, and clock steering for synchronization of clocks between GEO and GPS satellites. In addition to these, KASS requires 2.2 MHz for SBAS Augmentation service and 18.5 MHz for Geo-ranging service as minimum bandwidths as a results of service performance analysis of GEO ranging with respect to navigation payload(transponder) RF bandwidth is presented. These analysis results will be fed into KASS communication system design by carrying out final analysis after determining two GEOs and sites of KASS uplink stations.
