  • Purpose : This study aims to identify job stress, emotional intelligence, and exhaustion of the nurses in comprehensive nursing service units and then verify the moderating and mediating effects of emotional intelligence on the relationship between job stress and exhaustion. Methods : Participants are 118 nurses working in two general hospitals. The collected data are analyzed using the SPSS WIN 27.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs by assessing frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis and bootstrapping. Results : Exhaustion has a statistically significant positive correlation with job stress (r=.40, p <.001) and a statistically significant negative correlation with emotional intelligence (r=-.26, p =.004). A partial mediating effect of emotional intelligence is found between job stress and exhaustion, however, there is no moderating effect. Conclusion : It is expected that to reduce the exhaustion of nurses in comprehensive nursing service units, it is necessary to assess job stress and emotional intelligence, and strengthen emotional intelligence along with job stress intervention.

Results: As a result of assessing the fit of the model, it was found that 𝑥2=67.247 (df=28, p<.001), GFI=.953, AGFI=.911, TLI=0.936, CFI=0.965 and RMSEA=.074. Emotional exhaustion was found to have a direct effect on job demand (β=.26) and an indirect effect on stress response (β=.31). The total effect was β=.57. There was a positive complete indirect effect of β=.52 between emotional intelligence and emotional exhaustion. The total effect was not significant, respectively. Conclusion: Since job demands of school nurses affect emotional exhaustion, it is necessary to reconstruct their jobs and operations to alleviate their job demands.

Variables influencing job turnover intention included exploited variables (empowerment, job stress, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, exhaustion) that have been actively studied in other fields. The results showed that the empowerment of railway traffic controllers did not directly affect job stress and turnover intention, but had a direct effect on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and exhaustion. Job stress did not directly affect job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and exhaustion, and job satisfaction did not directly affect organizational commitment, burnout, and turnover intentions. Burnout has a direct effect on turnover intention, indicating that exhaustion of railroad traffic controllers has an effect on turnover intentions. In conclusion, empowerment has a direct effect on burnout and exhaustion has a direct effect on turnover intention. This study suggests that management of empowerment and exhaustion is important for the prevention of turnover of railway traffic controllers.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how certain factors-especially dietitians' general characteristics and job burnout-influence their job satisfaction and turnover intention. The survey was conducted during the period from September 7th to October 15th of 2006. A total of 91 institutions(response rate 74.6%) was analyzed by using SPSS(windows ver. 14.0). A majority of the respondents were females(97.8%) and 30 years or older(66.0%). Among the job burnout dimensions, exhaustion($2.78{\pm}0.07$) was rated higher than cynicism($2.62{\pm}0.06$), while the professional efficacy level($3.55{\pm}0.05$) was relatively high. The dietitians were more satisfied with co-workers($3.73{\pm}0.07$) and work($3.41{\pm}0.06$) than with pay($2.66{\pm}0.07$) and promotion($2.32{\pm}0.07$). The work dimension of job satisfaction was negatively correlated with exhaustion and cynicism dimensions of job burnout, and turnover intention(p<0.001), but positively correlated with professional efficacy dimension(p<0.001). The supervision dimension was negatively correlated with cynicism(p<0.05) and turnover intention(p<0.001), but positively correlated with professional efficacy dimension(p<0.01). The co-workers dimension was positively correlated with professional efficacy dimension(p<0.01). The pay dimension was negatively correlated with exhaustion(p<0.001) and cynicism(p<0.01) dimensions and turnover intention(p<0.001). The promotion dimension was negatively correlated with cynicism(p<0.01). The turnover intention was positively correlated with exhaustion and cynicism dimensions of job burnout(p<0.001). A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that i) professional efficacy was a factor to significantly increase job satisfaction, ii) cynicism to significantly decrease their job satisfaction, and iii) exhaustion to significantly increase turnover intention.

  • Background: As health care workers face a wide range of psychosocial stressors, they are at a high risk of developing burnout syndrome, which in turn may affect hospital outcomes such as the quality and safety of provided care. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the moderating effect of job control on the relationship between workload and burnout. Methods: A total of 352 hospital workers from five Italian public hospitals completed a self-administered questionnaire that was used to measure exhaustion, cynicism, job control, and workload. Data were collected in 2013. Results: In contrast to previous studies, the results of this study supported the moderation effect of job control on the relationship between workload and exhaustion. Furthermore, the results found support for the sequential link from exhaustion to cynicism. Conclusion: This study showed the importance for hospital managers to carry out management practices that promote job control and provide employees with job resources, in order to reduce the burnout risk.
