  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the elementary pre-service teachers' conceptions of 'color of gases' focusing on the survey from freshmen at a National University of Education. For the study, the views about 'color of gases' were surveyed from the pre-service teachers. And the responses were analyzed based on the patterns. The results from the study are as follows: First, the conceptions about 'color of gases' were divided into 2 top-level, 5 mid-level and 7 sub-level categories. Second, the number of students who answered 'certain gas has color' was significantly greater than those who answered 'every gas has no color'. However, only a small number of students who answered former understand the scientific meaning of color and the color of gases correctly. Third, out of 5 misconception categories, greater number of students answered with 'inaccurate scientific knowledge (Ma1)', so the category was classified again into five detailed sub-categories. Fourth, most of the students, who answered 'every gas has no color', stated "they have not seen any color gases through their lives" based on their own experience. Fifth, the distribution percentage for scientific conceptions vs misconceptions was not related with the students' gender but highly related with students' academic area and their science courses taken at high school. Sixth, the pre-service teachers have various types of misconceptions regarding the 'color of gases' and when they have to explain visibility of gases to other people they tend to pass on their misconceptions. Based on the results from the study, some educational guidelines were suggested.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the self-esteem and job-seeking efficacy of dental hygiene students in an attempt to provide some information on career guidance, counseling and the development of employment programs by colleges, as self-esteem seemed to be one of integral variables to affect job-seeking efficacy. Methods : The subjects in this study were the dental hygiene students in three different colleges in South and North Jeolla Provinces. After a self-administered survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 562 respondents were analyzed by the SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 12.0. Results : 1. The students investigated got a mean of 2.43 in self-esteem, which was not a high score. The sophomores had a better self-esteem than the freshmen and juniors, and the gaps among the respondents in each subfactor of self-esteem were significant($p^*$ <0.01, $p^{**}$ <0.05). 2. The students got a mean of 3.12 in overall job-seeking efficacy, and there were significant differences among them in each subfactor of job-seeking efficacy($p^*$ <0.01). 3. The freshmen were ahead of the sophomores and juniors in job-seeking efficacy, and the gaps between the former and the latter were significant($p^*$ <0.01). 4. There was a significant relationship between the self-perceived self-esteem and job-seeking efficacy of the students. A higher self-esteem led to a better job-seeking efficacy(p<0.01). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings illustrated that a higher self-esteem had a more positive effect on job-seeking efficacy. Therefore the development of programs geared toward boosting the self-esteem of dental hygiene students is required, and educational institutions should provide quality self-esteem programs for students to plan and prepare for their future, to make the right career choice, to improve their vocational adjustment, to keep pursuing self-development and to build the right values.

  • The reading activity of university students is the key element for the cultivation of creative human resources, and each university develops and performs the various cultural education and library program. Actually, the university libraries check the service periodically through library satisfaction surveys and the library user's actual condition survey to improve it, but the amount of reading, number of books lent and the rate of borrowers are still under expectation. Therefore, in this research, an in-depth analysis of lending books data for freshmen, as the service improvement and revitalization measures of university libraries for students, suggested the following: (1) the early education for the library users, (2) the opening of the students-participating library collections, (3) the use of the data using a library for the consulting with students (4) the establishment of the library depositary for education support, and (5) the introduction of the library CRM for individual student. Through this result, it would be substantially helpful for each university library (including two-year college), in which the number of lending books and the rate of borrowers are below expectations.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between personal traits and information behavior theoretically. Personal traits are often represented by "major type of personality found in an ethnic group or society" and measured by both degrees of affection and dependency in this study. In turn, information behavior is used to include unique features in information needs, information seeking, information source preference, and information searching pattern in library and internet. The data was collected through a survey with 162 college freshmen, and analyzed for both frequency test and Chi-square test. The major research result shows that dependency rather than affection has a statistically meaningful relation with information behavior, in particular, information needs and source preference. Also made are several methodological suggestions for further research.

  • This study is a descriptive paper addressing the relationship between test anxiety, self-esteem and the mental health levels of freshmen and third year students of Dental Hygienics. In late 2011, we received a total of 298 questionnaires from freshmen and third year Dental Hygienics students of three South Korean universities, located specifically in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The timing of this questionnaire was significant because it was one week prior to midterm examinations. The results were as follows:1. There was a statistically significant relationship between age (t=3.017, p<.001) and grade(t=2.665, p<0.05), subjective health status(t=27.513, p<.001). 2. The lower the participants' reported mental health in general, the higher their level of test anxiety (r=.565, p<.001), broken down into two subdivisions: cognitive text anxiety (r=526, p<.001) and emotional test anxiety (r=.534, p<.001). 3. When considering the factors that influence the general mental health of participants, there were age differences. For first year students, their subjeetive health status (${\ss}$=-.300, p<.001) and test anxiety (${\ss}$=.530, p<.001) were significant. For third year students, this was also true (subjective mental condition: ${\ss}$=-.242, p<.001 and test anxiety: ${\ss}$=.350, p<.001) but self-worth was also significant (${\ss}$=.377, p<.001). The results of this study suggest that the key factors that influence the mental health level of students Dental Hygienics are test anxiety, subjective appraisal of health level, and general self-worth. A systematic approach is therefore needed to improve students' mental health and reduce test anxiety. Health management programs which address and test students' physical health will also be important in improving student performance and welfare.

  • Teachers' teaching behavior is directly influenced by teachers' belief, and students' belief system is directly influenced by teachers' teaching behavior. There has been a question whether curriculum of teacher training university could help preservice teachers form positive belief system. The purpose of this study was to address this issue empirically. First, a questionnaire about mathematical belief was given to freshmen preservice teachers. They generally showed positive belief about mathematics to the degree that is not satisfactory and responded most positively in the sub-area of teaching mathematics from three sub-areas of mathematics itself, studying mathematics, and teaching mathematics. After studying a mathematical philosophy course, the freshmen preservice teachers were given the same questionnaire that they responded before studying the course. Belief about mathematics itself was changed very positively, and increase in the sub-area of mathematics itself was the largest. These results show that the mathematical philosophy course helped preservice teachers form positive belief system in mathematics.
