The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between early childhood teacher's knowledge and protective practice on safety. The study subjects were 312 early childhood teachers working at kindergartens and day care centers in Seoul, Kyung-gi area. A modified questionnaire was based on that developed by Nam(2002). Data were analysed by t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlations. The results were as follows. First, there was a small but insignificant difference for safety knowledge in the teachers' teaching experiences, and working place, but no difference in attending safety education. Second, there were differences for safety practices in teaching experiences and working place. Third, teachers' safety knowledge was highly and positively correlated with safety practices. In conclusion, enhanced early childhood teacher' safety knowledge is needed for improved safety practice.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to classify early childhood educators' perfectionism types and to identify differences in teacher self-efficacy and teachers burnout according to the types of perfectionism. Methods: The participants of this study were 309 teachers working at early childhood education centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Daejeon, Se-jong, Kim-Cheon, and Hong-Sung, South Korea. Early childhood educators were surveyed regarding perfectionism, teacher self-efficacy and teacher burnout. The collected data were analyzed using K-means cluster analyses and analysis of covariance. Results: Cluster analyses with self-oriented perfectionism and other-oriented perfectionism as cluster variables resulted in three types of perfectionism among early childhood educators; 'self-other directed perfectionism(33.0%)', 'other directed perfectionism(35.0%)' and 'non perfectionism(32.0%)'. Educators with self-other directed perfectionism reported higher teacher self-efficacy and lower teacher burnout than educators with other directed perfectionism or with non perfectionism. Conclusion/Implications: Early childhood educators' perfectionism may be a significant personality trait linked to quality of education and care in real education settings.
The purpose of this study was to suggest basic data for prevention of child abuse by examining the patterns and characteristics of child abuse observed at child-care centers. Data was collected by pre-service early childhood teachers majoring in child studies in an education practice session from May 1 to May 31, 2015 based on examined information and class discussion. This study shows that emotional abuse was performed most often, followed by neglect and physical abuse. Physical abuse was observed as a form of punishment and beating, whereas emotional abuse was observed in the form of force, sarcastic remarks, verbal attacks, and disregard. Neglect was observed as exclusion and indifference. Most crucial prevention against child abuse lies in teachers' personality education and concerns with their own mental health as well as children's rights education.
A large sample (1090) of randomly selected early childhood education professionals and government officials rated each of the 133 standards of "A Model for Institutional Accreditation for Early Childhood Education and Care"(Yang, 1999) on a scale of 1 (least important) to 5 (most important). Findings were that all kindergartens and child care centers should be evaluated for accreditation every 3 years with 3-6 months for self-study and on-site validation visits by representatives of the appropritates agencies for 1-2 days. Evaluation results are should be used by institution personnel as a guide to self-supervision, by government officials as a funding standard and by parents as criteria of program quality. Essential accreditation standards included: facilities and equipment; curriculum; nutrition, health and safety; administration and management; and support systems. Safety and teacher-child interactions were most highly rated while parent involvement was not highly rated.
This study investigated the leadership skills of directors in addition to empowerment and Job satisfaction of teachers in Child Care Centers. The participants were 446 teachers who worked in early childhood educational institutes across Jeju province. The results were as following.: Firstly, transformational leadership significantly affected empowerment. However, individual consideration and transactional leadership from transformational leadership did not significantly affect empowerment. Secondly, individual consideration and intellectual stimulation from transformational leadership had a significant effect on job satisfaction. Also, reward for performance and exceptional management from transactional leadership had a significant effect on the job itself, the relationship, the working environment, and salary package among sub-variables in job satisfaction.
This study was aimed at knowing the recognition of teachers' nutrition knowledge and nutrition education at day-care centers in Seong-nam. Teachers were all female, most of whom were in the 20, and their careers were less than 3 years. And $76.2\%$ of the teachers graduated from high school and junior college. The score of the nutrition knowledge was average $14.3\pm2.2$ (out of 20). It shows that they are lack of general information of nutrition. As the teachers had higher education, they scored higher nutrition knowledge levels (p < 0.01). It also says that there was meaningful interrelationship between the nutrition knowledge and the number of children they had (p < 0.05). $93\%$ of the teachers said that nutrition education should be given when children are three years old, at least and most of the teachers thought that nutrition education is necessary and should be taught in a separate course. $50.4\%$ of the teachers thought that nutrition education for early childhood should be taught by a nutritionist, but $35.2\%$ of them thought that the teachers themselves should be in charge of it. About $60\%$ of the teachers thought that 'Cooking Activity for Early Childhood' course should be established and it is desirable that the nutrition education should be in the area of cooking activity for childhood at day-care centers. The teachers thought that dietary habit is the most important subject in nutrition education and they got more information from the internet rather than in the class related to nutrition. Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of innovative culture in early childhood education institutions on the relationship between teachers' civic consciousness and actions for building a community in order to obtain methodological information for implementation at a time when the need to build an education community has been raised. Methods: The data were collected through 275 early childhood teachers working in kindergartens and daycare centers Then, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression were conducted. Results: All three variables civic consciousness, innovative culture, and actions for building a community showed a significant positive correlation. As a result of analyzing the mediating effect of innovation culture, it was found that the indirect effect of teachers' civic consciousness on the actions for building a community through the innovative culture was found to be statistically significant. Conclusion/Implications: This study was found that it is important to strengthen the teacher's civic consciousness and to create an innovative culture of early childhood education institutions in order to promote actions for building an educational community of teachers. This study is meaningful in that it provided implications for the direction of teacher education and formation of an innovative culture in early childhood education institutions for the purpose building an educational community.
This study reviews the current status of Korean first graders, their experience with early care and education (ECE) programs, and their participation in private and after-school education. The research also examines how school adjustment during the first grade is related to family income, types of ECE programs, and participation in private and after-school education. Using the first year data of the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) 2010, this study analyzes 752 first graders who attended only one of two types of ECE programs (child care centers or kindergartens), after which two 25% income extremes were examined. The analysis demonstrates that children from low-income households attended child care centers more often, while children from high-income households attended kindergartens more often. For both low-income and high-income groups, child care centers had a lower starting age and longer attendance periods than did kindergartens. High-income household children started attending ECE programs earlier, experienced more private and after-school education, and received a larger number of private and after-school educational lessons. For the second research purpose, children from low-income families showed better peer relations in school adjustment, while children attending child care centers showed better teacher relations than children attending kindergartens. Children with after-school education also exhibited better peer relations. These findings show the importance of government support for early learning, especially for low-income families and offer a foundation for developing private education polices for early childhood before and after school entry.
This study aimed at examining the problems in character education in early childhood education and elementary education in Korea and at providing policy implications for more effective character education. The study interviewed 20 teachers from child care centers, kindergartens and elementary schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province using the focus group interview method. The results showed teachers' level of understanding of the definition and purpose of character education. Teachers experienced difficulty because they lacked a manual as well as training for character education and because of the inconsistency between character education and the burden of academic performance. The lack of connection among character education in early childhood education and elementary school, strong needs for parent education, and partnership between the three spheres of the home, school, and community were also implied.
