  • With the increasing access to the internet, the number of designers who rely on internet to use information on design is on the rise. Therefore common dictionary of design terminology need to be formed and shared among designers. To do so, internet is very useful medium. However as relating terminology increases rapidly through interactivity among designers, it will be far from taking full advantage of features of internet to set up and provide such information unilaterally on internet. This indicates that providing data on the internet, not via traditional books, requires in-depth study on process of establishment of database structure and appropriate interface design. Thus this study will show design terms database model that harnesses internet feature that enables establishment of information spontaneously through user's interactivity, departing from a model that conveys information unilaterally. This report summarized and analyzed various models and suggested classification system in accordance with user's learning cognition. Problems on existing dictionary of design terminology were identified and new methods addressing such problems were exploited. In a word, this report is intended to propose user oriented inter-constructive database model that highlights high level of openness and interactivity by enabling changes of text in the cyber space and encouraging user to participate in making design dictionary.

  • Purpose - This study aims to investigate the current state of distribution terminology usage by retailers and consumers nationwide, and to suggest a practical improvement plan for its standardization. The Korean distribution industry is closely related to consumers' daily lives. However, in reality, there exists a gap among producers, distributors, and consumers in terms of the definition, understanding, and perception of the terminology. Therefore, standardizing this terminology is essential for more smooth communication. This paper suggests the necessity of committing overall research and survey activities to the actual conditions of using Korean distribution terminology by organizations and their respective management situations, and further, the necessity of probing the problem and its measures in line with the objective and mission of the "Fundamental Law of the Korean Language." Research design, data, and methodology - This study's scope is limited to wholesale and retail including some information systems. First, the study covers most written material including lexicons and glossary of distribution terminology, university textbooks and teaching material for national certificate of qualification, and related laws and ordinances. Second, the survey covers retailers' management situations by store format. The retailers used as the sample for the survey include department stores, discount stores, SSM, and convenience stores. Altogether, 20 specialists were interviewed in their respective sectors or retail formats. Finally, the project team surveyed a sample of 1,300 consumers nationwide on 50 distribution terms mainly used by consumers, including those about awareness, understanding, usage, and attitude. Results - In total, 1,249 terms are drawn through literature research including distribution terminology used in the related literature, glossary and lexicons, distribution terminology in textbooks, and legal terminology. A classified table comprises four large categories including general distribution, distribution marketing, distribution information, and merchandise. The results of the three-step research including literature survey, field survey of retailers, and consumer survey were advised to be screened by academia (retail associations, faculty etc.), retailers (major retail management by store format), retail specialists and consultants, consumers, and Korean linguists. In total, 1,300 questionnaires for 50 terms of the distribution terminology closely associated with consumers were distributed to subjects nationwide. Conclusions - The desired and expected results from this study are summarized from three perspectives as follows: First, from retailers' perspective, a new concept, or coinage of new terms of the distribution industry stems from advanced countries such as America and Europe. However, the original meaning and definition are diluted and distorted with changes in the language users' situations and context. This study provides basic guidelines for standardization of distribution terms used among various retail formats in most daily life situations that consumers encounter. Second, from the nation's perspective, this study suggests optimal choices of distribution terminology in the context of laws and ordinances regarding concerned Ministries. Last, from the consumers' perspective, this paper enables consumers to understand and use distribution terms properly in their daily life.

  • To write a medical record using SNOMED CT standard clinical terminologies, it is necessary to find and select an appropriate terminology from the huge volume of terminologies within short time. Using previous SNOMED CT search browsers, it is very difficult to select appropriate one from search results since they provide a simple list-up of similar candidate terminologies. This paper proposes a novel search browser which supports effect searching of clinical terminology by utilizing characteristics of SNOMED CT. The proposed system provides a simplified tree-view representing hierarchical structures of search results which enables fast selection of appropriate terminology from the search results. Design and Implementation of the system proves effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • As the networks connect the world, enterprises tend to move manufacturing activities into virtual spaces. Since different software applications use different data terminology, it becomes a problem to interoperate, interchange, and manage electronic data among heterogeneous systems. It is said that approximately one billion dollar has been being spent yearly in USA for product data exchange and interoperability. As commercial CAD systems have brought in the concept of design feature for the sake of interoperability, terminologies of design features need to be harmonized. In order to define design feature terminology for integration, knowledge about feature definitions of different CAD systems should be considered. STEP standard have attempted to solve this problem, but it defines only syntactic data representation so that semantic data integration is not possible. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating modeling features of CAD systems. We utilize the ontology concept to build a data model of design features which can be a semantic standard of feature definitions of CAD systems. Using feature ontology, we implement an integrated virtual database and a simple system which searches and edits design features in a semantic way.

  • This study focuses on wardrobes to examine how the terms have been changed by comparing traditional Korean furniture in Chosun Dynasty and contemporary furniture since the traditional furniture terms and forms have been changed like our life culture. For chests and wardrobes, approximately 26 terms were used in Chosun Dynasty. However, only five of them are currently used for top panels, hinges, drawers, mirrors, and columns. For bedroom cabinets, 27 terms are used and 4 of them are changed with the same meaning. The change of the terminology results from the life culture mostly. While the Chosun Dynasty furniture terms were mostly presented as the Korean and Chinese language, in the contemporary furniture ones Korean and Chinese together with English are used. The English terms' usage results from hardwares imported from overseas. The terms derived from the three different languages are presented not only in the wardrobes but also other pieces generally.
