  • Let C be a closed convex set in ${\mathbb{S}}^m$ or ${\mathbb{H}}^m$. Assume that ${\Sigma}$ is an n-dimensional compact minimal submanifold outside C such that ${\Sigma}$ is orthogonal to ${\partial}C$ along ${\partial}{\Sigma}{\cap}{\partial}C$ and ${\partial}{\Sigma}$ lies on a geodesic sphere centered at a fixed point $p{\in}{\partial}{\Sigma}{\cap}{\partial}C$ and that r is the distance in ${\mathbb{S}}^m$ or ${\mathbb{H}}^m$ from p. We make use of a modified volume $M_p({\Sigma})$ of ${\Sigma}$ and obtain a sharp relative isoperimetric inequality $$\frac{1}{2}n^n{\omega}_nM_p({\Sigma})^{n-1}{\leq}Vol({\partial}{\Sigma}{\sim}{\partial}C)^n$$, where ${\omega}_n$ is the volume of a unit ball in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ Equality holds if and only if ${\Sigma}$ is a totally geodesic half ball centered at p.

  • We analyze a single server bulk input queue with optional server vacations under a single vacation policy and balking phenomenon. The service times of the customers as well as the vacation times of the server have been assumed to be arbitrary (general). We further assume that not all arriving batches join the system during server's vacation periods. The supplementary variable technique is employed to obtain time-dependent probability generating functions of the queue size as well as the system size in terms of their Laplace transforms. For the steady state, we obtain probability generating functions of the queue size as well as the system size, the expected number of customers and the expected waiting time of the customers in the queue as well as the system, all in explicit and closed forms. Some special cases are discussed and some known results have been derived.

  • There exist many frame structural systems having some attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems, concentracted masses and spring supports. For free and forced vibration analyses of such a system an analytical method based on the receptance method is presented. A framed structure having attachments is considered as a combined system composed of various Timoshenko beam and bar elements and the attachments. So, the vibration characteristics of the system are calculated by synthesizing receptances and Support Displacement Transfer Ratio (SDTR) of beam and bar elements In spectral and/or closed forms, and receptances of the attachments. In forced vibration analysis, arbitrary excitation forces at a point on the structure and displacement excitations at boundaries are considered. Numerical investigations are carried out for verification of the presented method, and the results show good accuracy and very high computational efficiency.

  • Computational structural engineering is the base on which most of the achievements of engineering and physics are built. Since most of the theory underlying physical phenomena is involved differential equations for which closed forms of solution are seldom possible, the numerical approximation is necessary for a quantitative solution. Some areas where progress and research on computational mechanics are currently active are discussed. In the first part of this paper the development of the improved non-conforming elements for the analysis of plates and shells is described. Recent developments in the adaptive analysis for the structural and the wind problem and meshless method are also discussed in the second part.

  • Based on the concept of the folding, the folding in X-direction and in Y-direction are defined and denoted by the X-Folding and the Y-Folding respectively. We consider a random variable X which follows a rectangular distribution "R(a, b) distribution" with two parameters a, b. This paper aims to apply the folding on the unit area P($a{\leq}X{\leq}b$) and also to study the proposed folding in each direction for R(a, b) distribution and the generated family of the corresponding constructed rectangular probability distributions. Some main properties of this family are reviewed. According to the proposed folding, we derive and discuss some important corresponding functions in closed forms.

  • Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor differentiated from the adnexal epithelium of sebaceous glands and forms less than 1% of all cutaneous malignancies. We present a case of a 93-year-old woman with a rapidly growing mass on the right cheek. Initial histiopathologic finding was basal cell carcinoma. The mass was widely excised and superficial parotidectomy was performed while preserving the facial nerve branches. The resulting defect was covered with a transposition flap from the ipsilateral posterior auricular area and the donor site was closed primarily. However, histopathologic examination of the excised mass showed a poorly differentiated sebaceous carcinoma with a clear resection margin. The diagnosis of sebaceous carcinoma can be difficult to make at initial presentation. This report describes a rare case of a rapidly growing extraocular sebaceous carcinoma, which resulted in a good treatment outcome, and provides a review of relevant literature.

  • A geortor type pump is widely used in lubrication and actuator systems. Especially the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubrication oil and power source of automatic transmission. A gerotor is a planar mechanism consist of a pair of rotor and circular tooth of stator assembly which forms a closed space. However, related industries do not have necessary technology to design and optimize the pump and paid royalties of gerotor profile on an advanced company. Also, gerotor profiles with setting design parameter have not been sufficiently analyzed from a theoretical view. Therefore, it is very difficult for designer to decide the specifications of the gerotor profiles, and calculation and fluctuation of flow rate is not yet confirmed. In this study, theoretical analyses and optimal design of the gerotor profiles have been performed numerical method by mathematical base. An automated design system of the tooth profile has been developed through MATLAB GUI Program considering various design parameters.

  • In this paper, we propose a matrix completion algorithm for Internet of Things (IoT) localization. The proposed algorithm recovers the Gram matrix of sensors by performing optimization over the Riemannian manifold of fixed-rank positive semidefinite matrices. We compute and show the closed forms of all the differentially geometric components required for applying nonlinear conjugate gradients combined with Armijo line search method. The numerical experiments show that the performance of the proposed algorithm in solving IoT localization is outstanding compared with the state-of-the-art matrix completion algorithms both in noise and noiseless scenarios.

  • Gradient-type algorithms for adaptive IIR notch filters are very attractive in terms of both performances and computational requirements. Generally, it is quite difficult to assess their performances analytically. There have been several trials to analyze such adaptive algorithms as the sign and the plain gradient algorithms for some types of adaptive IIR notch filters, but many of them still remain unexplored. Furthermore, analysis techniques used in those trials can not be directly applied to different types of adaptive IIR notch filters. This paper presents a detailed performance analysis of the sign algorithm for a well-known adaptive IIR notch filter with constrained poles and zeros, which can not be done by just applying the related existing analysis techniques, and therefore has not been attempted yet. The steady-state estimation error and mean square error (MSE) of the algorithm are derived in closed forms. Stability bounds of the algorithm are also assessed. extensive simulations are conducted to support the analytical findings.

  • Giusti-Suzor and Fano introduced translations of the scales of Lu-Fano plots by phase renormalization in order to decouple the intra- and inter-channel couplings in multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT). Their theory was further developed by others to deal with systems involving a larger number of channels. In different directions, MQDT was reformulated into forms with a one-to-one correspondence to those in Fano's configuration mixing theory of resonance for photofragmentation processes involving one closed and many open channels. In this study, the theory was further developed to fully reveal the coupling nature, decoupling of the background and resonance scattering in physical scattering matrices as well as to further extract the dynamic parameters undiscovered by Fano and his colleagues. This theory was applied to the photoabsorption spectrum of $H_2$ observed by Herzberg's group.
