  • The purpose of this study was to find out the variables affecting the successful aging of the elderly. To achieve this purpose, a survey was conducted with 388 seniors living in the Jeonbuk area. The data were analyzed using multiple regressions and a path analysis. The major findings were as follows: First, statistically significantly different perception of successful aging was observed according to their marital status. Second, successful aging of the elderly with a spouse was influenced by personal variables, such as their own perception of economic status, gender, education level and physical condition. In contrast, successful aging of the elderly without a spouse was most influenced by social variables, such as family support. Third, the attitude towards aging directly affected successful aging. Various personal and social characteristics indirectly affected successful aging via attitudes towards aging according to the presence of a spouse.

Methods: A Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used. Thirty-four selected Q-statements from each of 38 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Results: Five types of attitudes towards the aging process from research subjects in Korean nurses were identified. Type I is a positive acceptance type, Type II is a negative acceptance type, Type III is a passive coping type, Type IV is an active coping type, and Type V is an ambiguous acceptance type. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that different approaches of educational programs for elderly care are recommended based on the five types of nurse's attitude toward the aging process.

The research subjects were 230 care-givers who work in a sanitarium for the elderly in the East of Jeollanamdo. The tool used to measure their knowledge of the elderly was FAQ1 and the semantic differential scale was used to determine the attitude. Job stress was measured by the tool which was used by sun-ju Park. The data analysis was carried out by SPSS Win 13.0. The results of this study are as follows; The care-givers' knowledge level point towards the elderly was relatively low at 44.6%. The average point of attitude toward the elderly was 3.91, which is relatively moderate. The percentages of job stress was generally low. The results showed us that there was no correlation with the knowledge level of the elderly, the attitude towards the elderly and job stress. Since the results indicated that care-givers' knowledge level for the elderly was low, we reached the conclusion that further education where care-givers can get general knowledge for the elderly and aging is necessary. Moreover, research for strengthening positive attitudes towards the elderly is also necessary.

Data were collected from 255 nursing students with clinical practice experiences in three nursing schools in B city, with the measurement of Fact on Aging Quiz Part I, Attitudes toward Caring for the Elderly and Geriatric nursing practice. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Stepwise multiple regression. Significant correlations were found among knowledge of, caring attitude towards the elderly and geriatric nursing practice. The significant factors influencing geriatric nursing practice were caring attitude towards the elderly, grade, and knowledge of the elderly, and these factors explained 27.4% of the variance. The findings suggest that effective educational strategies need to be developed and implemented to foster positive caring attitude towards and knowledge of the elderly in order to improve geriatric nursing practice in nursing students.

  • This study aimed to develop the elderly care program for seniors in rural areas and to evaluate its efficacy through pre- and post-tests. For them, this study carried out a total of 8 sessions that includes 4 aims, such as understanding rural elderly, volunteer activities, psychological help, and aids to daily living, on 36 persons over the age of 60 years in rural areas. The data was analyzed by paired t-test to 36 elderly. The results of the study are as follows. First, looking at changes in knowledge about aging, objective evaluation of knowledge showed significant differences (t=-2.22, p<.05), but evaluation of elderly's perception-change didn't show significant differences between before and after. Second, volunteer attitude didn't show significant differences between before and after, but after the training, 75% of them answered 'yes' to question that asked whether they'd like to participate in elderly's volunteer caring activity for other elderly within the town in the future, which gave us certain expectation that the attitude towards volunteer activities might change positively in the future. Third, objective evaluation of knowledge for psychological help didn't show significant differences between before and after. But elderly's subjective perception showed significant differences (t=-2.82, p<.01). Fourth, evaluating changes in knowledge for elderly's aiding daily life, both the objective evaluation and subjective evaluation didn't show significant differences between before and after. Fifth, satisfaction of the program showed high scores over 4 points: contents, education methods, education place, education time. The most helpful topics for them were counseling (27.8%) and dementia (27.8%), followed by elderly and aging (16.7%), elderly's residential environment (13.9%), elderly's dietary life (9.3%) and volunteer activities (5.6%).

  • Increasing evidence shows that ageist attitudes towards older adults develop quite early in childhood in Western culture, yet, empirical research on this topic in Korea is lacking. It has been argued that as Korea has become more youth oriented, negative views of aging have emerged and Korean children are increasingly exposured to negative stereotypes of older adults. Nuclearization of family structure and consequent reduction of intergenerational interaction is considered to be another important factor. The purpose of this study is to find out whether Korean children have ageist attitudes. Acknowledging the possibility that children tend to report in socially appropriate ways to the explicit measures of ageism, we included implicit measures of ageism. Data was collected from 570 fourth to sixth grade elementary school children selected by quota sampling. The current study used Child-Age Implicit Association Test and two other explicit measurements. The original versions were modified to be culturally applicable to the Korean context. Results indicated that when measured explicitly, children do not report preferring younger person than older person. However when measured implicitly, it was found that children at this young age already reveal negative biases toward the elderly. Contrast to the fact that the level of explicit ageism is significantly different by demographic characteristics of children, no statistical difference in the level of implicit ageism is detected. Based on the results, implications are discussed.

  • Due to the phenomenon of aging, a new consumer segment known as the "new-silver generation" is emerging. Unlike the previous silver generation, this generation possesses significant economic power and consuming willingness, attracting attention from consumer goods companies. However, both the new-silver generation and the elderly face challenges in adopting contactless or self-service technologies such as self-order kiosks, resulting in negative reactions. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the attitude and response of the newsilver generation towards kiosks, as well as the factors influencing their resistance to such technology. By applying theoretical perspectives from the innovation resistance model, technostress theory, and the value-based model, this study identifies influencing factors for innovation resistance among the new-silver generation when using contactless technologies implemented in fast-food restaurants. The findings indicate that a lower awareness of new technologies and services corresponds to decreased adoption resistance, while a higher perceived value leads to more positive behaviors and attitudes among the new-silver generation utilizing kiosks at fast-food restaurants.
