  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics for each of botanical types of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) under vinyl-and non-mulching in cultural limiting region. Ten peanut varieties pertaining to virginia-large seed, virginia-small seed, spanish, valencia, shinpung type were used in this study. Main stem length was in order of valencia, spanish, virginia-small seed, shinpung, virginia-large seed type under vinyl-and non-mulching. By vinyl-mulching, the maximum growth stage of main stem was shortened by 20 days than that of non-mulching. Number of branches per plant was distinguished among botanical types. Numbers of those were virginia-small seed 28, virginia-large seed 27, shinpung 15, spanish 13, valencia 7 under vinyl-mulching and were virginia-small seed 22, virginia-large seed 21, spanish 12, spinpung 12, valencia 5 under non-mulching. The longeset branch length was in order of valencia, spanish, spinpung, virginia-large seed, virginia-small seed type under vinyl-and non-mulching and velencia type was the longest of the botanical types.

Varietal Differences of Pod Shedding (땅콩 낙협 정도의 품종간차이)

  • This study was conducted to screen genetic stock for resistant to pod shedding. Materials used were 7 recommended varieties in Korea and 211 introduced varieties containing 94 Virginia type, 99 Spanish type and 18 Valencia type varieties. the days from seeding to first anthesis. number of mature pods per plant. 100 seeds weight and shedded pod ratio per total mature pod at harvesting were investigated. And the breaking tensile strength required to detach a pod from its gynophore was measured at a proper time for harvesting of each variety. In addition. factors related to pod shedding were discussed. The first anthesis of Spanish and Valencia types were earlier than that of Virginia type, but Korean recommended varieties which were recognized as Virginia type had relatively earlier anthesis. The varieties of Spanish type yielded more pods compared with those of Valencia and Virginia types. but Korean recom-mended varieties yielded slightly more pods than the others. Seeds weight of Korean recommended varieties was larger than not merely those of Spanish and Valencia types which were small seeds but also those of Virginia type which were large seeds. The breaking tensile strengths between pod and gynophore were various among the varieties belonging to same type. The strength was relatively strong in the Spanish type, but weak in both Virginia type and Korean recommended varieties. Therefore, pod shedding in the varieties of Spanish type was low and high in Virginia type and Korean recommended varieties. There were positive or negative correlations at the 0.1 % significan level among the days to first anthesis. number of pods per plant. seed weight, breaking tensile strength and shedding ratio. The pod shedding is considered a compound character that is affected by the factors such as breaking tensile strength between pod and gynophore, number of pods per plant and seed size.

Changes of the Physicochemical Characteristics of Korean Peanuts with Roasting and Storaging(I) (한국산 낙화생의 가열 및 저장 중 품질의 이화학적인 변화 (I))

  • This study was carried out to determine the proximate composition, amino acids and fatty acids contents and changes of physicochemical characteristics of each oil extracted from Spanish and Virginia type peanuts grown in Korea roasted at 110, 120, 130 and 14$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 minutes. 1. The moisture contents of raw Spanish and Virginia type peanuts were 6.5~6.8% respectively. The crude ash and reduced sugar contents of raw Spanish and Virginia type peanuts were 2.3% and 16.5% and the crude protein content was 27.0% in Spanish type peanuts and was aproximately 1% higher than in Virginia type peanut. The protein content was 25.7%~26.7% in Virginia type peanut roasted at 110, 120, 130 and 14$0^{\circ}C$. The crude fat content of Virginia type peanut was 46.0% which was aproximately 1% higher than that of Spanish type. But four kinds of oils content were 51.3%~51.8% in Spanish type peanut roasted at 110, 120, 130 and 14$0^{\circ}C$, which was about 2% higher than those of Virginia type. 2. Amino acids existed in peanut were glutamie acid, arginine, aspartic acid, leucine, glycine, phenylalanine, proline-lysine, tyrosine, valine and isoleucine, etc mainly. But methionine and threonine contents were very low. The content of glutamic acid was the highest in 71.6-81.7mg among amino acids. Glutamic acid content of Virginia type peanut was about 12% higher than that of Spanish type peanut. Total amino acid content was 441.8mg/g in Virginia type peanut and that was 16% higher than that of Spanish type peanut. The lysine content of Spanish and Virginia type peanuts roasted at 14$0^{\circ}C$ were 24% and 13%, these were lower than those of peanuts roasted at 11$0^{\circ}C$. 3. Main fatty acids of raw Spanish and Virginia type peanut oils were oleic(40.99-46.58%), linoleic(33.21-38.82%) and palmitic acid(9.72-11.58). Linoleic acid content of raw Virginia type peanuts was 5.6% higher than that of raw Spanish type peanut. And the oleic acid content of Spanish and Virginia type peanuts roasted at 11$0^{\circ}C$, 12$0^{\circ}C$, 13$0^{\circ}C$ and 14$0^{\circ}C$ was 50-53% and 41-43% respectively. Linoleic acid content of Spanish and Virginia type peanuts roasted at same temperatures as the former was about 28-31% and 37-38% respectively. That linoleic acid content of roasted peanuts was lower than that of raw peanuts. Linoleic acid content of raw and roasted Virginia type peanut, were higher than that of Spanish type peanuts. 4. Acid value and peroxide value of oils extracted from roasted Spanish and Virginia type peanuts were much higher than those of oils extracted from raw peanuts. The maximum AVs of oils extracted from Spanish and Virginia type roasted peanuts were samples roasted at 12$0^{\circ}C$and those AVs were 0.50 and 0.63 respectively. And the maximum POVs of oils extracted from Spanish and Virginia type roasted peanuts were samples roasted at 12$0^{\circ}C$ also and those POVs were 26.8 and 32.8 meq/kg. oil respectively. Acid value and peroxide value of oils extracted from roasted peanuts were increased with increasing the roasting temperatures from 11$0^{\circ}C$ to 12$0^{\circ}C$, then decreased, while TBA values were increased continuously with increasing the roasting temperatures.

  • The peanut, unlike other plants, has three distinct steps in the reproductive process. These are the flowers, the peg and the fruit. This research was designed in the field to determine the difference of fruiting habit for each of plant types of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in peanut culture limiting region. Eight cultivars representing four plant types, i.e., Virginia, Spanish, Valencia and Shinpung types. Number of pegs per plant produced in order of Spanish, Valencia, Virginia, Shinpung, Virginia type. The Virginia small seed type produced the most pods per plant. The shinpung type showed more percentage of matured pod than other types and early pot-set habit. Distribution of mature pods for each of branch positions to total mature pods occupied 63% on two cotyledonary branchs, 34% on 3rd to 5th branchs, 3% on over 6th branchs. Shinpung type was considered more favorable plant type than other types for breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because of early pot-set and high percentage of mature pod.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dry matter production and distribution ratio of dry matter produced for each of 5 botanical types (Virginia-Small Seed, Virginia-Large Seed, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung) of Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Peanut culture limiting region. The total dry weight increased in order of Virginia-Large seed, Virginia- Small Seed, Shinpung, Spanish, Valencia type. The maximum Crop growth rates (Cmax) were Virginia-Small seed 18.22-23.41 g/㎡/day, Virginia-Large seed 19.61-20.03 g/㎡/day, Shinpung 16.33-19.77 g/㎡/day, Spanish 13.86-16.28 g/㎡/day, Valencia 13.97-16.25g/㎡/day, respectively. LAI showed the high value at vinyl-mulching than non-mulching. In the early filling stage, distribution ratio of dry matter produced showed the highest at the shinpung type than the other types.

Novel homogeneous burnable poisons in pressurized water reactor ceramic fuel

  • Due to excess reactivity, fresh nuclear fuel often contains burnable poisons. This research looks at six different burnable poisons and their impacts on reactivity, material attractiveness, and waste management. An MCNP simulation of a PWR fuel pin was performed with a fuel burnup of 60 GWd/MTHM to determine when each burnable poison fuel type would decrease below a k of 1. For determining the plutonium material attractiveness in each burnable poison fuel type, the plutonium isotopic content of the used fuel was evaluated using Bathke's Figure of Merit formula. For the waste management analysis, the thermal output of each burnable poison fuel type was determined through ORIGEN decay simulations at 100 and 300 years after being discharged from the core. The performance of all six burnable poisons varied over the three criteria considered and no single burnable poison performed best in all three considerations.

  • To obtain the fundamental informations on the varietal improvement of peanut and to study the ecological variations of the important agronomic traits and to the relationship between the traits studied, an investigation was made on varietal classification of 489 introduced on the basis of their morphological and ecological differences at Crop Experiment Station, Suweon in 1968, and the other study conducted at some location as above in 1969 was to investigate the ecological variations of the materials in accordance with changes of seeding date using classified varietal group under 5 different seeding times from April 16 to July 7 with twenty days interval. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Peanut varieties tested were classified into Spanish, Virginia Erect, Virginia Runner, Southeast Runner. Valencia and Semirunner, on the basis of plant type, flowering time, number of grains per pod and grain size. 2. Characteristics of varietal group classified are as followings. (1) Spanish; erect, small grained and early maturing type. (2) Virginia Erect; erect, large grained and late flowering type. (3) Virginia Runner; runner, large grained and late maturing type. (4) Southeast Runner; runner, small grained and early maturing type. (5) Valencia; erect, small grained and early flowering type with 3-4 grains per pod. (6) Semi runner; semirunner, large grained and late flowering type. 3. Flowering period in respective varietal group was consistently shorted by delayed seeding date and the degree of shortening was more serious in late flowering varietal group. 4. Number of branches per plant was generally decreased in late seeding date in respective group. However, Spanish and Virginia Runner exhibited lower number of branches in the first seeding rather than the second seeding and the lowest number of branches was found in Spanish while the highest were Virginia Erect in all seeding date. 5. Shelling ratio was high in Spanish and Southeast Runner in any seeding date and decreased remarkedly by seeding after May. 6. Number of pod per plant in all varietal groups was remarkedly decreased by delayed seeding date and the degree of decreasing was more serious in large grain varietal group. 7. The higher pod weight per plant was found in second seeding date rather than first seeding and pod weight per plant was decreased obviously in all late seeding after the second. Therefore, among the cultivars tested, Southeast Runner noted the highest pod weight per plant while Virginia Runner showed the lowest. 8. Grain number per plant expressed the similar tendency as the pod weight per plant but was low in large grain group and high in small grain group in all seeding date employed. 9. 100 grain weight was heaviest in second seeding and was decreased remarkedly after the second and even the first seeding date. 10. Yield per 10a noted considerable variations in accordance with seeding date in all groups classified. However, the yield was increased in second seeding date (May 7) and decreased in the others. 11. Length of main stem and branches were exceptionally decreased in the first seeding date compare to the second in Spanish while other varieties were tend to be same between the indicated seeding date, but. these two traits were strikingly decreased in all seeding after the second. This tendency, however, strongly suggested the importance of environmental effects on peanut growth in terms of their changes due to the different seeding date. 12. Highly significant positive correlations were showed between yield and yield componets such as pod weight per plant, 100 grain weight and the number of grains per plant in all varietal groups except, Virginia Runner. However, the other characters were almost not correlated with yield and differences in correlation coefficients among the seeding dates were found. 13. Path coefficients estimated for yield components to yield was higher in number of grains per plant pod weight per plant and 100 grain weight in terms of direct effect and the other components were negligible in all varietal groups. 14. Heritabilities estimated were generally high in pod number per plant, shelling ratio, 100 grain weights and number of grains per pod and the other traits were relatively low.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the flowering habit for the botanical types of peanut (Arachis hypogaea. L) in cultural limiting region. Eight peanut varieties pertaining to virginia, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung type were used in this study. Shinpung type, a new erect type was developed at Crop Experiment Station, ORD. Appearance of the first flower of peanut plants is observed at a relatively early growing stage. Number of days to first flower were 41 days under vinyl-mulching while non-mulching culture took 55 days. Number of days to first flower were delayed in order of Valencia, Spanish, Shinpung, Virginia type. Flowering durations were distinguished among botanical types and days of those were Virginia 85-93, Spanish 101-105, Valencia 106-113, Shinpung 82-88 days, respectively. The Spanish and Valencia types produced more flowers than Virginia and Shinpung types. The maximum flowering stage of Shinpung and Virginia types reached early and ceased by one cycle, while Spanish and Valencia types came late and showed maximum stage through the early and late stage during the growth stage. By vinyl-mulching, the maximum flowering stage was shortened by 20 days than that of non-mulching. Distribution of flowers for each of branch positions to total flowers occupied 52-53% in two cotyledonary branchs, 23-27% in 3rd to 5th branchs, 20-25% in over. 6th branchs. Shinpung type was considered more favorable botanical type than the other types for the breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because of shortening of days to first flower, flowering duration and distribution of lower branch of effective flowers.

Flowering and Fruiting of Characteristics of Short Flowering Period Lines in Peanut (땅콩 단기개화성 선발 계통의 개화 및 결실 특성)

  • To breed high quality and yield peanut variety according to select the short flowering duration, fifteen germplasms (1 virginia,7 spanish,6 valencia types and var, Daekwang) were investigated the flowering habit and agronomic characteristics from 1998 to 1999. Emergence date of the selected short flowering duration germplasms (SPFGs) was earlier 1-3 days and middle or small seed than that of var, Daekwang. Main stem length was longer 57cm but the number of branches, pods, 100-seed weight, and pod weight per plant was reduced 25%, 23%, 42%, 46%, respectively, in SPFCs comparing to var, Daekwang. The flowering date in SPFGs was similar but the flowering duration was earlier 5-16 days than that of var, Daekwang (52 days). Varieties that flowered shorter duration than 50 days were 18.8% among the SPFGs. The number of total flowers in SPFGs was fewer 50% than that of var, Daekwang. The rate of flowering inhibition were 50-52% than that of var Daekwang. The frequencies of flowering duration (under 50 days) were 7.7% in virginia, 46.2% in spanish, 53.9% in valencia. The effect of shading treatment on rate of flowering inhibition were 11%, but number of branches and pods were reduced by 27-31% in valencia type compared to non-shade. Correlation coefficient was significant positively ($r=0.9314^*$ virginia, $r=0.9551^*$ spanish, $r=0.9551^*$ valencia) between the air temperature and flower number, The frequency of peg and pod number on 1st to 2nd nodes in SPFGs were more 3-12%, 21-26% than that of var. Daekwang. The rate of mature pods at 80 days after flowering were higher 12-17% than that of var, Daekwang (68%). Correlation coefficient was high significant negatively between date of first flower and flowering date, the ratio of mature pod.

Development of a multidisciplinary design optimization framework for an efficient supersonic air vehicle

  • A modular multidisciplinary analysis and optimization framework has been built with the goal of performing conceptual design of an advanced efficient supersonic air vehicle. This paper addresses the specific challenge of designing this type of aircraft for a long range, supersonic cruise mission with a payload release. The framework includes all the disciplines expected for multidisciplinary supersonic aircraft design, although it also includes disciplines specifically required by an advanced aircraft that is tailless and has embedded engines. Several disciplines have been developed at multifidelity levels. The framework can be readily adapted to the conceptual design of other supersonic aircraft. Favorable results obtained from running the analysis framework for a B-58 supersonic bomber test case are presented as a validation of the methods employed.
