A conservative pressure-based finite-volume numerical method has been developed for computing flow and heat transfer by using an unstructured grid system. The method admits arbitrary convex polyhedra. Care is taken in the discretization and solution procedures to avoid formulations that are cell-shape-specific. A collocated variable arrangement formulation is developed, i.e. all dependent variables such as pressure and velocity are stored at cell centers. Gradients required for the evaluation of diffusion fluxes and for second-order-accurate convective operators are found by a novel second-order accurate spatial discretization. Momentum interpolation is used to prevent pressure checkerboarding and the SIMPLE algorithm is used for pressure-velocity coupling. The resulting set of coupled nonlinear algebraic equations is solved by employing a segregated approach, leading to a decoupled set of linear algebraic equations fer each dependent variable, with a sparse diagonally dominant coefficient matrix. These equations are solved by an iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient solver which retains the sparsity of the coefficient matrix, thus achieving a very efficient use of computer resources.
Exter ballistics of a typical high-speed projectile is studied through a flow-visualization experiment and an unstructured grid Navier-Srokes computation. Experiment produced a schlieren photograph that adequately shows the characteristic features of this complex flow, namely two kinds of oblique cone shocks and turbulent wake developing into the downstream. A hybrid scheme of finite volume-element method is used to simulate the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stok- es solution on unstructured grids. Osher's approximate Riemann solver is used to discretize the cinvection term. Higher-order spatial accuracy is obtained by MUSCL extension and van Albada ty- pe flux limiter is used to stabilize the numerical oscillation near the solution discontinuity. Accurate Gakerkin method is used to discretize the viscous term. Explict fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used for the time-stepping, which simplifies the application of MUSCL extension. A two-layer k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent wakes accurately. Axisymmetric folw and two-dimensional flow with an angle of attack have been computed. Grid-dependency is also checked by carrying out the computation with doubled meshes. 2-D calculation shows that effect of angle of attack on the flow field is negligible. Axi-symmetric results of the computation agrees well with the flow visualization. Primary oblique shock is represented within 2-3 meshes in numerical results, and the varicose mode of the vortex shedding is clearly captured in the turbulent wake region.
An incompressible flow stover based on the unstructured finite volume method has been developed. The flow domain is discretized by triangles in 2D or tetrahedra in 3D. The convective and viscous fluxes are obtained using edge connectivities of the unstructured meshes. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm due to its computational efficiency associated with the hyperbolic nature of the resulting equations. Laminar test flow problems are computed and presented with a comparison against other numerical solutions or experimental results.
Viscous analysis on incompressible flows is performed using unstructured triangular meshes. A two-dimensional and axisymmetric incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved in time-marching form by artificial compressibility method. The governing equations are discretized by a cell-centered based finite-volume method. and a centered scheme is used for inviscid and viscous fluxes with fourth order artificial dissipation. An explicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta method is used for the time integration with local time stepping and implicit residual smoothing. Convergence properties are examined and solution accuracies are also validated with benchmark solution and experiment.
Both the bubble rising in a fully filled container and the droplet splash are simulated by a solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method (CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The present results are compared with other numerical solutions found in the literature. It is found that the present code simulate complex free surface flows such as multi phase flows due to large density difference efficiently and accurately.
A three-dimensional (3D) unstructured hydrodynamic solver for transient two-phase flows has been developed. A two-fluid three-field model was adopted for the two-phase flows. The three fields represent a continuous liquid, an entrained liquid, and a vapour field. The hydrodynamic solver is for the 3D component of a nuclear system code and the component-scale analysis tools for transient two-phase flows. The finite volume method and unstructured grid are adopted, which are useful for the flows in a complicated geometry. The semi-implicit ICE (Implicit Continuous-fluid Eulerian) numerical scheme has been adapted to the unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the numerical method and the preliminary results of the calculations. The results show that the numerical scheme is robust and predicts the phase change and the flow transitions due to boiling and flashing problems well.
The pressure-based methods are very popular in CFD because it requires less computer core memory compared to other coupled or density-based solvers. Currently structured-mesh methodology based on pressure-based algorithm is quite mature to apply to the practical problems. The unstructured mesh method needs much more computer memory than the structured-mesh method. However the pressure-based method utilizing the sequential approach does not require very large memory used for unstructured-mesh density-based solvers. The present study has developed the unstructured grid pressure-based method. Cell-centered finite volume method was selected due to robustness for imposing various boundary conditions and easy implementation of higher-order upwind scheme. The predictive capability of present method has validated against several benchmark problems.
The process of mould design in the foundry industry has been based on the intuition and experience of foundry engineers and designers. To bring the industry to a more scientific basis the design process should be integrated with scientific analysis such as heat transfer. The production by foundry techniques is influenced by the geometry configuration, which affects the solidification conditions and subsequent cooling. Numerical simulation and/or experiments make possible the selection of adequate materials, reducing cycle times and minimizing production costs. The main propose of this work is to study the heat transfer phenomena in the mould considering the phase change of the cast-part. Due to complex geometry of the mould, a block unstructured grid and a generalized curvilinear formulation engaged with the finite volume method is described and applied. Two types of boundary conditions, diffusive and Newtonian, are used and compared. The developed numerical code is tested in real case and the main results are compared with experimental data. The results showed that the solidification time is about 6 seconds for diffusive boundary conditions and 14.8 seconds for Newtonian boundary conditions. The use of the block unstructured grid in combination with a generalized curvilinear formulation works well with the finite volume method and allows the development of more efficient algorithms with better capacity to describe the part contours through a lesser number of elements.
Direct simulations of aerodynamic sound, especially sound emitted by rapidly rotating elliptic cylinder by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). Effect of pile-fabrics for noise reduction is also studied by the finite volume LBM (FVLBM) using an unstructured grid. Second order time integration and third order upwind scheme are shown to be enough for these simulations. Sound sources are detected to be doublets for both cases. For the elliptic cylinder, the doublet is generated in the interaction between the vortex and the edge. For the circular cylinders, they are generated synchronizing with the Karman vortex street, and it is also shown that the pile-fabrics covering the surface of the cylinder reduces the strength of the source.
