A modified gas tracer method was used to obtain reaeration coefficient from an artificial channel and a reach of Bokha stream, Ichon city. Propane was used as the tracer gas and Rhodamine-B dye as a dispersion and dulution tracer. Concentrations of propane in water sample were measured using a gas chromatograph and concentrationsof dye using UV-Spectrophotometer. To compare measured values with predicted values, commonly used 14 equations were selected . Results of this study suggested that the modified gas tracer method is a potentially useful procedure for th edetermination of reaeration cofficients. However, estimated reaeration coefficients from predictive equations were significantly different from that of this study. Therefore, when using predictive equations, careful selection of equation with consideration for hydraulic characteristics such as flow depth and average velocity, or use of newly derived predictive equation which is adequate for questioned stream would be needed.
Interzonal air movements are important to characterize overall ventilation performance of complicated multi-zone buildings. Tracer gas techniques are widely used to measure ventilation rates, ventilation effectiveness, and interzonal air movements. Depending on the number of gases used, they are divided into single and multi tracer gas methods. This paper deals with the comparison of the tracer gas methods in measuring air exchange rate between rooms. Experiments have been conducted in a simple two-room model with known airflow rates. In multi-gas procedure, the concentration decays of two tracer gases, i.e SF6 and R134a are measured after simultaneous injections in each room. The single tracer gas method is also applied by injecting SF6 gas with a time lag between two rooms. The data reduction procedures are developed to obtain the interzonal airflow rate using the matrix inversion, and various data manipulation methods are tested, such as data shift, interpolation, and smoothing. Uncertainty for each airflow rate is investigated depending on the parameters based on the setting values.

Tracer gas technique is widely used to measure the ventilation rates and/or ventilation effectiveness of building spaces. However, the conventional method using a single tracer gas can measure only outdoor air change rates in a single zone. This paper deals with the multi-gas tracer technique to measure air exchange rates between rooms. Interzonal air movements are important to characterize overall ventilation performance of complicated multi-zone buildings. Experiments are conducted in a simple two-room model with known airflow rates using tracer gases of SF6 and R134a. The concentration decays of two tracer gases are measured after simultaneous injections in each room. The governing equations are derived from the continuity and the mass balance of each room. The data reduction procedure are developed to obtain the inter-room airflow rates using the governing matrix inversion, and various data manipulation methods are tested, such as data shift, interpolation, smoothing, and etc, to improve the estimate and interpretation of the results.
Natural ventilation is employed in limestone mines that have been currently operated in Korea, and there has been a growing issue of a significantly weak airflow caused by the large-scale excavation. Thus, the air quality in the working area is considerably poor. In order to improve this circumstance, it is mainly required to examine ventilation performance. In this study, the examination of ventilation efficiency was conducted by using tracer gas method. The result of this work indicated detailedly the ventilation problems in research mine, in that extremely low air velocity, recirculation, and air change rate were evaluated quantitatively using tracer gas. Therefore the ventilation performance evaluation using tracer gas can be opted as a precise method to improve the working area in mines.

In this study, three different types of mechanical ventilation systems are compared based on their ventilation characteristics: tracer gas concentration decay characteristics, and ventilation effectiveness by calculating actual ventilation air flow rate. The experiments are performed by using a step-down method for measuring tracer gas. $CO_{2}$ gas, concentration in the model chamber. Application of a mixing factor, k, was used and measured values ranged from 0.68 to 0.77. The Type 2 ventilation system was found to have the highest ventilation effectiveness rather than the Types 1 and 3.

The ventilation effectiveness is evaluated as a function of air exchange rate and supply / extract locations in a simplified model chamber using a tracer gas technique of CO$_2$ gas injected into a supply duct. Ventilation systems consist of supply and extract fans, a CO$_2$gas generator, a CO$_2$gas analyzer and a test chamber. The ventilation effectiveness is evaluated using a step-down method based on ASTM Standard E741-83. The room mean age of the model chamber is decreased with increasing air exchange rate fanged from 6to 10 air changes per hour. The ventilation effectiveness of the mechanical inlet/natural extract system is better than that of the mechanical extract system.

A push pull hood system is frequently applied to control contaminants evaporated from an open surface tank. Efficiency of push pull hood system is affected by various parameters, such as, cross draft, vessel shapes, tank surface area, liquid temperature. A previous work assisted by flow visualization technique qualitatively showed that a strong cross draft blown from the pull hood to push slot could destroy a stable wall-jet on the surface of tank, resulting in the abrupt escape of smoke from the surface. In this study, the tracer gas method was applied to determine the effect of cross-draft on the capture efficiency qualitatively. A new concept of capture efficiency was introduced, that is, linear efficiency. This can be determined by measuring the mass of tracer gas in the duct of pull hood while the linear tracer source is in between push slot and pull hood. By traversing the linear tracer source from the push slot to the pull hood, it can be found where the contaminant is escaped from the tank. Total capture efficiency can be determined by averaging the linear efficiencies. Under the condition of cross-draft velocities of 0, 0.4, 0.75, 1.05 and 1.47m/s, total capture efficiencies were measured as 97.6, 95.4, 94.6, 92.7 and 70.5% respectively. The abrupt reduction of efficiency with cross-draft velocity of 1.47m/s was due to the destruction of tank surface wall-jet by the counter-current cross-draft. The same phenomenon was observed in the previous flow visualization study. As an alternative to overcome this abrupt efficiency drop, the 20% increase of hood flow rates was tested, resulting in 20% efficiency increase.
Over a period of 5 days between August 12 and 17, 2005, we performed a gas exchange experiment using the dual tracer method in a tidal coastal ocean located off the southern coast of Korea. The gas exchange rate was determined from temporal changes in the ratio of $^3He$ to $SF_6$ measured daily in the surface mixed layer. The measured gas exchange rate($k_{CO_2}$), normalized to a Schmidt number of 600 for $CO_2$ in fresh water at $20^{\circ}C$, was approximately $5.0\;cm\;h^{-1}$ at a mean wind speed of $3.9\;ms^{-1}$ during the study period. This value is significantly less than those obtained from floating chamber-based experiments performed previously in estuarine environments, but is similar in magnitude to values obtained using the dual tracer method in river and tidal coastal waters and values predicted on the basis of the relationship between the gas exchange rate and wind speed (Wanninkhof 1992), which is generally applicable to the open ocean. Our result is also consistent with the relationship of Raymond and Cole (2001), which was derived from experiments carried out in estuarine environments using $^{222}Rn$ and chlorofluorocarbons along with measurements undertaken in the Hudson River, Canada, using $SF_6$ and $^3He$. Our results indicate that tidal action in a microtidal region did not discernibly enhance the measured $k_{CO_2}$ value.
This paper aims for evaluating the wind-driven ventilation in basement parking lots of apartment. Wind tunnel tests coupled with tracer gas method were conducted, and classified by wind directions and opening types. The test results showed that, as for wind-driven ventilations, stack type openings were more successful than scuttle vent. Finally, according to Weibull distribution in Seoul, yearly averaged wind-driven ventilation rate was calculated.
