Objective: This study aimed to explore the experience and meaning of pre-service early childhood teachers who practiced health promoting activities for themselves. Methods: Research participants were 115 pre-service early childhood teachers enrolled in the health education for children course at one college in G region. The reports of activity records of their eight-week long health promotion activities were collected as qualitative data followed by content analysis being implemented. Results: First, the experience of the health promoting activities the participants took part in was categorized into 'Early phase of experience: A mix of worries and anticipation, and success and failure', 'Mid phase of experience: Being motivated by physical changes and records', and 'Late phase of experience: Continuous execution through habituation.' Second, the meaning of health promotion activities the participants took part in was categorized into 'A great opportunity for introspection', 'A meaningful start of college life', and 'A valuable chance to consider desirable roles of a teacher for early childhood health education.' Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study suggest that pre-service early childhood teachers should pay close attention to their health management, and that contents that emphasize the importance of teachers' health should be included in health education.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation and influencing factors of oral health awareness, oral health behaviors, self-esteem and OHIP-14. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 313 childcare teachers in Jeonnam from June 4 to 14, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of 3 questions of general characteristics, 4 questions of occupation, 1 question of oral health education experience, and 1 question of oral health education participation. The instrument for awareness and behavior of oral health were modified and consisted of 10 questions of awareness and 10 questions of behavior by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.718 in awareness and 0.812 in behavior. Instrument for self-esteem was modified from Rosenberg. Self-esteem questionnaire consisted fo 5 questions of positive answers and 5 questions of negative answers by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha in self esteem was 0.846 in the study. Oral Health Impact Profile-14(OHIP-14) was adapted from Slade by Likert 5 scale and consisted fo 14 questions. Cronbach's alpha was 0.934 in the study. Data were analyzed by chi square test, t-test, one way ANOVA, Scheffe multiple range test, Pearason's correlation test, and stepwise multiple regression test. Results: There were positive correlations between oral health awareness, oral health behavior(r=0.502), and self-esteem(r=0.332), but negative correlations with OHIP-14. Oral health behavior showed positive correlations with self-esteem(r=0.230). The factors on oral health awareness were high oral health behavior and self esteem, low OHIP-14, and active participation in education. Self-esteem was closely related to high with high oral health awareness. low OHIP-14, low job satisfaction. Conclusions: Childcare teachers play the very important roles in the development of oral health education program for children and continuous education.
This study aimed to provide basic data for the promotion of flourishing by analyzing whether welfare and hope mediated and double-mediated in the relationship between boss incivility and flourishing with 400 childcare teachers. The subjects of the survey were collected through offline questionnaires. The data were analysed using SPSS PC+ Win ver. 25.0 and PROCESS macro. Frequency, reliability, correlation, and double mediation effect analysis were performed. As a result of the study, first, experience of incivility from bosses showed a negative correlation with welfare, hope, and flourishing. welfare, hope and flourishing showed a positive correlation with each other. Second, welfare and hope played a double mediating role in the relationship between boss and co-worker incivility and flourishing. Welfare and hope played a role in partially offsetting the negative (-) effect of incivility on flourishing. The conclusion of this study confirmed that the promotion of flourishing can be promoted by using the dual mediating role of welfare and hope.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine whether the 'Ordinance for Guaranteeing Children's Right to Play' is has been implemented well and investigate play practice in elementary school. Methods: For this study, a survey was conducted on 319 elementary school teachers in Jeollanam-do. Results: First, elementary school teachers' perception of the enactment of the 'Ordinance on Children's Right to Play' is high. And their perception is positive about the effect of the 'Ordinance on Children's Right to Play'. Second, among the roles of the Office of Education, play-related training and club support were relatively low. The role of the elementary school director was relatively low in the analysis and disclosure of play performance. Third, the time that children mainly play in school is the middle play time. The sufficiency and safety of play spaces differed by region. Fourth, the contents to be added to the 'Ordinance' are securing play space, budget support, and mandatory play time. Conclusion/Implications: In the future, 'Ordinance on Children's Right to Play' should go through a process of improvement so that children's play is realized as a right.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how children's temperament and relationships with teachers affect their peer interaction. For this purpose, two surveys were conducted on mothers and teachers of 326 four- and five-year-old children attending four kindergartens in Gyeonggi Province. The data were analyzed by using PASW 18.0 to carry out hierarchical regression and post hocanalyses. The results showed that closeness to teachers moderated the effects of children's emotionality on their positive peer interaction. On the other hand, children's temperaments including emotionality and activity, and their relationship with teachers were directly influential on their negative peer interaction; no interaction effect was found between their temperament and relationships with teachers. It was concluded that the quality of teacher-child relationships could promote children's positive peer interaction while it could also reduce their negative interaction with peers. However, the temperament of children played limited roles in their negative peer interaction.
Objective: This study aimed to provide a systematic understanding of children's peer initiative and peer acceptance and to offer specific information to increase young children's social competence. Methods: Participants were 235 5-year-old children from six child care centers in Sejong City. The participants were interviewed to measure the peer acceptance of children attending the same class. Also, a survey was conducted on their teachers to measure children's peer initiative and the relationship with them. The collected data were analyzed by hierarchical regression using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: The results showed that significant main effects of friendly and unfriendly peer-initiatives on peer acceptance were found. The effects of teacher-child relationships and their moderating effects, however, were partial; only main influences of close relationships and the interaction effects between peer-initiatives and close relationships were significant. That is, the relationships between improper initiatives and low acceptance levels among peers were more intense when children established conflict relationships with their teacher. Conclusion/Implications: We found that close teacher-child relationships play moderating roles on the pathway from peer initiative to peer acceptance as a protective risk factor for children.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the pathway from mothers' overprotective parenting to their child's peer play interactions mediated by internalizing problems, that is, social immaturity and withdrawal. Methods: Surveys were conducted on mothers and teachers of 341 children aged three to five. SPSS 22.0 was used to analyze the data using descriptive statistics. Structural modeling analysis was also implemented to test theoretical model using AMOS 21.0. Results: Maternal overprotective parenting, which increased social immaturity of their child, indirectly reduced the child's positive interactions with peers during play. Mothers' overprotection led to a higher level of withdrawal of their child while the effect of children's withdrawal on their peer play interaction was not significant. Because overactive parenting of mothers had no direct effect on peer play interaction, the complete mediation model representing a path from maternal overprotection to children's peer play interaction via their internalizing problems was partially supported. Conclusion/Implications: This study shows that overprotective mothers hinder their child to experience confident and mature manners, and eventually lead their child to be socially unskillful and incompetent. It was suggested to explore more individual characteristics of mothers and children to help overprotective mothers to take a step back.
Objective: Social attention is paid to the issues concerning child care teachers' work multisibility and ambiguous legal status. Child care teachers are employees based on the "Labor Standards Act" and the "Child Care Act". They also play the role of kindergarten teachers based on the "Childhood Education Act" because of the Nuri curriculum. Based on the main tasks of the child care teachers who protect and nurture infants and toddlers, the Nuri curriculum education for infants is conducted. However, the duties and rights of child care teachers are disproportionate because there are many areas where teachers' professional roles do not suit their legal rights. Methods: The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers perceive their own rights through field experience using qualitative method based on interpretative epistemology. Participants were 61 child care teachers working in the metropolitan area and used protocol description and focus group interview (FGI) for data collection. The collected data were derived as a central theme according to the data analysis method proposed by Creswell (2013). Results: Participants in the study described the 'Right and autonomy of education as a professional occupation', 'Right to request for improvement on working conditions, guarantee of living and to request for welfare system' and 'Right to guarantee of a teacher's status and adjustment of grievance.' They pointed out poor working conditions and welfare benefits at daycare centers, and emphasized that education and autonomy are necessary conditions to be strengthened for quality child care activities. On the other hand, they did not realize that 'Right to guarantee of a teacher's status and adjustment of grievance' was their right. And they have endured the infringement of this right. Conclusion/Implications: This study reveals the gap between teachers' responsibilities and rights, indicating the urgency of institutional arrangements. It is discussed that the social expectation for strengthening personality and professionalism as an infant and child specialist is increased and a practical alternative for the improvement of the right of teachers working in the child care field is needed considering the change of values about work.
This study reviews recent changes in parenting support policy in Japan, and examines the roles and functions of day-nursery as the base for parenting support in the local community. The purpose of this study is to provide implications for the direction of the parenting support policy and child-care facilities for the local communities in South Korea. The analysis concentrates on the official national reports such as the Declining Birthrate White Paper and Japan's National Guidelines for Care and Education at Day Nursery by the Japanese Cabinet Office. The study finds that the Japanese government has introduced comprehensive medium and long-term policies for all the members of the community with recognizing the changes in the domestic and foreign child-rearing environments and social needs. These policies have also helped to improve the social awareness of parenting. The role of the day-care center has been raised as a significant part of the support for child-rearing in the local community due to the revision of the Child Welfare Act for nursery school teachers in 2001 and the official announcement of Japan's National Guidelines for Care and Education at Day Nursery in 2008. The study also concludes that the social responsibility of the nursery center has been strengthened by being utilized as a public resource for the community. From the findings, we can elicit the conclusions and implications that the roles and functions of child care centers as a significant base for parenting support in the local communities need to be considered. We also listen to the voices of stakeholders such as parents and staff of child care centers. Last but not least, we would understand the social role and importance of bringing up children by cooperation of the community members, and promote the role of child care centers as a central place providing and communicating information on child-rearing in the local communities.
The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects of both young children's gender and temperament and their teachers' teaching efficacy and teacher-child interactions on peer play interactions. For this purpose, the data from the 2012 Panel Study on Korean Children were analyzed using analyses of variances and correlation co-efficiencies. In addition, analyses of hierarchical regression, with young children's temperament and teacher-related factors (teaching efficacy and teacher-child interactions) as the independent variables and three sub-factors of peer play interactions (play interaction, play disruption, play disconnection) as the dependent variables, were conducted. The results showed that young children's temperament, teacher efficacy, teacher-child interactions, and peer play interactions differed by gender and significantly correlated. Young children's temperament and teacher-child interactions significantly affected young children's peer play interactions, and the effect of teacher-child interactions was larger than the effect of temperament by 2~2.5 times. The results proved the importance of early childhood teachers' roles in the development of young children's peer interactions with consideration of differences based on children's gender and temperament. With the results given, implications and suggestions for further research were discussed.
