The extracts of Carica papaya (flower), Barringtonia macrostachya (leaves), Coleus tuberosus (tuber), Mangifera indica (fruit skin) and Eugenia polyantha (leaves) showed strong in vitro anti-tumor promoting activity when assayed using Raji cells (Mooi et al., 1999). The antitumor promoting activity of the crude extracts was further analyzed by immunoblotting analysis of Raji cells carving Epstein-Barr virus genome. The expression of early antigens diffuse (EA-D) and early antigens restricted (EA-R) was determined by performing western blotting of treated Raji cells with human sera of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. All the plant extracts were shown to be able to suppress both EA-D and EA-R.

The purpose of this study was to determine the predictors of health promoting lifestyles(Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile HPLP) of Koreans in the Philippines. The sample consisted of 100 Koreans who have lived in Manila, Philippines. Data were collected for two months from Feb, 1 to March 30, 1998. Analysis of the data was done by use of percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. The range of total HPLP score was from 73 to 175 and the mean score of that was 117.23. In comparison of mean scores depending on each item of six dimensions, self-actualization dimension tended to show the hightest score(2.98) and responsibility for health dimension, the lowest score(1.83). 2. The HPLP score showed a positive correlation with age(r=.19), social support (r=.39), self-efficacy(r=.52) and perceived health status(r=.27), but a inverse correlation with perceived health care service utilization barriers(r=-.20). 3. By using stepwise multiple regression analysis it was determined that the main influencing factors on the HPLP score were self-efficacy(27.2%), social support(5.3%), age(5.3%) and perceived health status(2.9%). These variables made it possible to explain 40.7% of variance in HPLP score.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of type D personality on health status and health promoting behaviors in middle-aged women. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used with 220 middle aged women. All participants completed 3 measuring tools: a 14-item Type D Personality Scale, a 12-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire version 2, and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-version II. All were completed in November 2010. Results: The prevalence of type D personality was 34.5%. Type D women had significantly lower physical (p=.020) and mental health status (p<.001) compared with non-type D women. In addition Type D women reported significantly poorer performance of health responsibility (p=.015), physical activity (p=.001), nutrition (p=.027), spiritual growth (p<.001), interpersonal relations (p<.001) and stress management (p<.001) techniques in health behaviors than non-type D women. Conclusion: Type D personality is a vulnerability factor that affects health status and is associated with poor health promoting behaviors in middle aged women. Therefore, screening for Type D personality is important to detect women at risk for health status and quality of life in community settings in Korea.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify degrees of fatigue and influencing factors for fatigue in cancer patients. Method: Data was collected by questionnaires from 115 cancer patients at 3 hospitals in Seoul. The research instruments utilized in this study were fatigue, physical symptoms, depression, family support, and health promoting behaviors. Data was analyzed using the pearson correlation, t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Result: The mean score of fatigue for cancer patients was 12.90(range: 6-36). Fatigue for cancer patients according to age group and weight change showed a significant difference. Fatigue for cancer patients showed a significantly positive correlation to physical symptoms and depression. There was a negative correlation between family support and health promoting behaviors. The significant factors influencing fatigue for cancer patients were physical symptoms, health promoting behaviors, depression, and age group, which explained about 45.9%. Conclusion: The results suggest that symptoms and depression management, nursing interventions and practices for providing health promoting behaviors according to age are needed to manage the fatigue in cancer patients.
The role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils is important in overcoming its limitations for field application. A plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium, Serratia sp. SY5, was isolated from the rhizoplane of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) grown in petroleum and heavy-metal-contaminated soil. This isolate has shown capacities for indole acetic acid production and siderophores synthesis. Compared with a non-inoculated control, the radicular root growth of Zea mays seedlings inoculated with SY5 can be increased by 27- or 15.4-fold in the presence of 15 mg-Cd/l or 15 mg-Cu/l, respectively. The results from hydroponic cultures showed that inoculation of Serratia sp. SY5 had a favorable influence on the initial shoot growth and biomass of Zea mays under noncontaminated conditions. However, under Cd-contaminated conditions, the inoculation of SY5 significantly increased the root biomass of Zea mays. These results indicate that Serratia sp. SY5 can serve as a promising microbial inoculant for increased plant growth in heavy-metal-contaminated soils to improve the phytoremediation efficiency.
The plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Ochrobactrum lupini KUDC1013 elicited induced systemic resistance (ISR) in tobacco against soft rot disease caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum. We investigated of its factors involved in ISR elicitation. To characterize the ISR determinants, KUDC1013 cell suspension, heat-treated cells, supernatant from a culture medium, crude bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and flagella were tested for their ISR activities. Both LPS and flagella from KUDC1013 were effective in ISR elicitation. Crude cell free supernatant elicited ISR and factors with the highest ISR activity were retained in the n-butanol fraction. Analysis of the ISR-active fraction revealed the metabolites, phenylacetic acid (PAA), 1-hexadecene and linoleic acid (LA), as elicitors of ISR. Treatment of tobacco with these compounds significantly decreased the soft rot disease symptoms. This is the first report on the ISR determinants by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) KUDC1013 and identifying PAA, 1-hexadecene and LA as ISR-related compounds. This study shows that KUDC1013 has a great potential as biological control agent because of its multiple factors involved in induction of systemic resistance against phytopathogens.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing health promoting lifestyle of urban bus driver in small-sized companies. Methods: This study included 118 urban bus drivers who completed questionnaires. The data were collected from 6 small-sized bus companies located in a metropolitan city, from January to February 2015. Analyses were done using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. SPSS/Win 18.0 was used. Results: The scores of HPLP of urban bus drivers were 2.7 (on a 4-point scale). Mean of HPLP sub-scores were self-fulfillment ($3.0{\pm}0.5$), interpersonal relationship ($2.9{\pm}0.5$), physical activity ($2.9{\pm}0.7$), health responsibility ($2.7{\pm}0.5$), healthy diet ($2.6{\pm}0.6$), and stress management ($2.5{\pm}0.5$). Among independent variables, job satisfaction and presence of religion were significantly related to health promoting lifestyle (explained 39.2%). Conclusions: This study revealed that there is a need to strengthen job satisfaction for urban bus drivers' health promoting lifestyle.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the needs for developing a health promotion program for the elderly, and to compare the health promoting behaviors and perceived health status between high and low income elderly. Method: The data were collected from 80 high) income elderly and 84 low income elderly through face to face interviews. The instruments used in) this study were the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) and Perceived Health Status. Results: 1) The total score of the HPLP for the elderly was 2.29. In the subscales, the highest degree of performance' nutrition', following 'stress management', 'spiritual growth' and 'health responsibility' and the lowest degree of performance was 'physical activity'. 2) The high income level elderly had significantly higher total HPLP scores than the low income level elderly. The biggest difference was found in 'physical activity' between high) and low) income elderly. 3) The mean score of perceived health status was 8.21. The high) income elderly had significantly higher perceived health status than the low income elderly. Conclusion: The above findings indicate that it is necessary to develop a health promotion program with reinforced physical activity, health responsibility for the elderly in Korea. In particular physical activity need to be increased for the low income elderly. The low income elderly need to have positive thinking for perceived health status.
Objective: This study was conducted to compare health conditions and problems, health promoting behavior, and risky environment of industrial workers. Methods: The subjects of this study were 1,075 workers in 40 factories, located in Daegu, Korea. Survey data were collected from April 17th, 2006 to April 28th, 2006. CMI (Cornell Medical Index) Health Checklist was used to assess the health problems, Health Rating Scale for health status, HPLP II for health promoting behavior, and environmental risk assessment tool for risky environment. The data were analyzed by One-way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient using SPSS 12.0 for windows. Results: The results indicated a significant difference in health problems (F=4.70, p=.000), health conditions (F=2.47, p=.022), health promoting behavior (F=5.67, p=.000), and risky environment (F=14.75, p=.000) among these industrial workers. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that there is a need to develop customized health care programs for each company to provide differentiated health care to different types of work places. Further studies are required to assess differences in work environment among different types of work places for measures to reduce harmful factors to the environment.
