In this paper, a new scheme to calculate the weighting factor of the 2-D isotropic-dispersion finite difference time domain(ID-FDTD) is proposed. The weighting factor in [1] was formulated in free space, so that it may not be optimal in dielectric media. Therefore, the weighting factor was reformulated by considering the material properties and using the least mean square method. As a result, a minimum numerical dispersion error for any dielectric media is guaranteed.
The paper presents a generalized optimal active control algorithm for earthquake-resistant structures. The study included the weighting matrix configuration, stability, and time-delays for achieving control effectiveness and optimum solution. The sensitivity of various time-delays in the optimal solution is investigated for which the stability regions are determined. A simplified method for reducing the influence of time-delay on dynamic response is proposed. Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed optimal control algorithm is advantageous over others currently in vogue. Its feedback control law is independent of the time increment, and its weighting matrix can be flexibly selected and adjusted at any time during the operation of the control system. The examples also show that the weighting matrix based on pole placement approach is superior to other weighting matrix configurations for its self-adjustable control effectiveness. Using the time-delay correction method can significantly reduce the influence of time-delays on both structural response and required control force.

In survival analysis of observational data, the inverse probability weighting method and the Cox proportional hazards model are widely used when estimating the causal effects of multiple-valued treatment. In this paper, the two kinds of weights have been examined in the inverse probability weighting method. We explain the reason why the stabilized weight is more appropriate when an inverse probability weighting method using the generalized propensity score is applied. We also emphasize that a marginal hazard ratio and the conditional hazard ratio should be distinguished when defining the hazard ratio as a treatment effect under the Cox proportional hazards model. A simulation study based on real data is conducted to provide concrete numerical evidence.
This paper introduces an appropriate technique to estimate the weighting matrices used in the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method for active structural control. For this purpose, a parameter is defined to regulate the relationship between the structural energy and control force. The optimum value of the regulating parameter, is determined for single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems under seismic excitations. In addition, the suggested technique is generalized for multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) active control systems. Numerical examples demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method for controlled buildings under a wide range of seismic excitations.
This paper studies the problem of pole placement by an LQ controller for system having two distinct real poles. Using the so-called Pole's Moving Range (PMR) drawn in the s-plane and relational equations between closed-loop system poles and weighting matrices, we calculate the state weighting matrix to move two distinct real poles to a pair of complex poles. By numerical examples, we show that the proposed method is applied to improve system performance.
A method optimizing selection of a state weighting matrix is presented. The state weight-ing matrix is chosen so that the closed-loop system responses closely match to the ideal model responses. An algorithm is presented which determines a positive semidefinite state weighting matrix in the linear quadratic optimal control design problem and an numerical example is given to show the effect of the present algorithm.
In this paper, a research on the composition of the nesting algorithm fitness function is carried out by performing various numerical experiments to inspect how it affects the scrap efficiency, allocation characteristics, and time consumption, targeting the nesting results of ship parts. This paper specifically concentrates on a method to minimize the scrap ratio and efficiently use the well-defined remnants of a raw plate after the nesting process for the remnant nesting. Therefore, experiments for various ship parts are carried out with the weighting factor method, one of the multi-objective optimum design methods. Using various weighting factor sets, the nesting results are evaluated in accordance with the above purposes and compared with each set for each ship part groups. Consequently, it is suggested that the nesting algorithm fitness function should be constructed differently depending on the characteristics of the parts and the needs of the users.
The Element-free Galerkin Method has become a very popular tool for the simulation of mechanical problems with moving boundaries. The internally applied Moving Least Squares interpolation uses in general Gaussian or cubic weighting functions and has compact support. Due to the approximative character of this interpolation the obtained shape functions do not fulfill the interpolation conditions, which causes additional numerical effort for the application of the boundary conditions. In this paper a new weighting function is presented, which was designed for meshless shape functions to fulfill these essential conditions with very high accuracy without any additional effort. Furthermore this interpolation gives much more stable results for varying size of the influence radius and for strongly distorted nodal arrangements than existing weighting function types.
