  • In this study we developed a textbook for middle school mathematics, especially focusing on the 1st grade, based on storytelling, did experimental lessons using the developed textbook, and surveyed the responses of students to the lesson by three kinds of questionnaire and teacher interview. The results of this study can serve as basic data for other researches about storytelling-related education in school mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a mathematics basis underachiever program on a mathematics achievement and mathematics attitudes. For this investigation, twenty eight-grade students as an experimental group were trained in a mathematics basis underachiever program by trained teachers in a middle school classroom for a period of 8 weeks. Twenty eight-grade students in another middle school, serving as a control group. Both groups were given a pretest and a posttest to check the mathematics achievement inspection tool(Likert-type Mathematics Attitude Survey; LTMAS) and a mathematics attitude inspection tool(KEDI, 2001). In the analysis of data Frequencies, percentiles, t-test were used. The results of the study are summarized as follows; First, the results showed that the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher differences than the control group in the mathematics achievement components of inequality equation, figure area and the whole in a mathematical achievement(p<.05). Second the results showed that the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher differences than the control group in the mathematics attitude components of positive mathematics attitude, negative mathematics attitude and the whole in a mathematical attitude(p<.05).

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the pedagogical content knowledge of a middle school mathematics teacher manifested in his mathematics instruction by identifying the components of the pedagogical content knowledge of the teacher. For the purpose of the study, I conducted an interpretive case study by collecting qualitative data. The results showed that the pedagogical content knowledge of the teacher was characterized by: (a) knowledge of mathematics including connection among topics and various ways of solving problems; (b) knowledge of students' understanding involving students' misconceptions, common errors, difficulties, and confusions; and (c) knowledge of pedagogy consisting of his efforts to motivate his students by providing realistic applications of mathematical topics and his use of materials.

  • This study contains three themes as follows concerning the state of mathematics education and the textbooks in east and west germany before unification and in unified germany. The first subject is the investigations of the organization of the school systems and of the syllabus of mathematics in east germany in those days. Second, we analyzed the process of preparation for integration before unification, the nature of integration policies and the convention for the unification. Finally, we compare and analyze the similarities and differences in east and west german mathematics textbooks for middle school students combining those in south and north Korea, and further we suggest tasks to be studied in future research.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore how a mathematics teacher's beliefs about mathematics and teaching and learning and mathematics and how such beliefs are related to her knowledge manifested in her mathematics instruction. The study illustrates images of teaching practice of an American mathematics teacher in middle grades mathematics classrooms. Results suggest that the teacher seems consistent in teaching in terms of her beliefs about mathematics and learning and teaching mathematics in some degrees. In particular, the teacher's beliefs affected the ways in which mathematics teacher organized and structured her lessons.

  • Based on Perceptions about Mathematics Teachers (PMT) perceived by high school students, measured by 2189 students from Seoul Educational Longitudinal Study 2014 (SELS 2014), latent profile analysis (LPA) identified five distinct types of student groups (positive, partial positive, middle, negative, extreme negative). These student of positive, middle, and negative groups are positive, moderate and negative perceptions about math teachers. Partial positive group generally had a positive perception about mathematics teachers, extremely negative group was very negative about mathematics teachers. Both of these groups had peculiarly inconsistent trends and several anomalies. The Multinomial logistic regression analyses also indicated that individual factors (gender, major, self-concept, resilience, self-assessment, career maturity), school factors (friendship, relationship with school teachers) and parental factors (academic-relationship, emotional-relationship) were significant predictors of PMT profile groups. The Analysis of variance also indicated that mathematics class (attitude, satisfaction and atmosphere), Mathematics achievement were significant predictors of PMT profile groups. The profiling of perceptions about mathematics teachers resulted in enhanced understanding of the complex range of processes students employed. During mathematics class, implementation of smooth interactions and communications between students and teachers added in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

  • This research is focusing on find out the learning method for mathematics underachievers of middle school. The tested method were metacognitive activity through writing. For conducting research, I had selected mathematics underachievers of middle school. After selecting them, I made two group. One group studied using CAS calculator with paper and pencil. And another group studied using paper and pencil only. Both groups exhibited metacognitive learning activities. The analysis of result shows that the group with CAS calculator did better than the group of paper and pencil.

  • In this article the conceptual meaning of expression, equation and identity used in Korean mathematics textbooks and American mathematics textbooks is compared and discussed. For this purpose definitions and examples in several mathematics textbooks which are used in Korean elementary school, the 1st grade of middle school and American middle school are investigated. It is founded out that at first there are some parts that give rise to misunderstanding and then there are differences between the Korean terminologies and their corresponding English counterparts. The definitions of expression, equation and identity are advised to examine in the view of middle mathematics curriculum.

  • A central problem of mathematics teaching worldwide is probably the insufficient adaptive handling of tasks-especially in computational practice phases and modeling tasks. All students in a classroom must often work on the same tasks. In the process, the high-achieving students are often underchallenged, and the low-achieving ones are overchallenged. This publication uses different modeling of the tennis serve as an example to show a possible solution to the problem and develops and discusses one adaptive task each for middle school, high school, and college using three mathematical models of the tennis serve each time. From model to model within the task, the complexity of the modeling increases, the mathematical or physical demands on the students increase, and the new modeling leads to more realistic results. The proposed models offer the possibility to address heterogeneous learning groups by their arrangement in the surface structure of the so-called parallel adaptive task and to stimulate adaptive mathematics teaching on the instructional topic of mathematical modeling. Models A through C are suitable for middle school instruction, models C through E for high school, and models E through G for college. The models are classified in the specific modeling cycle and its extension by a digital tool model, and individual modeling steps are explained. The advantages of the presented models regarding teaching and learning mathematical modeling are elaborated. In addition, we report our first teaching experiences with the developed parallel adaptive tasks.

  • This study assumes alternative character of the operation of mathematical club in middle school. The case that operated the voluntary mathematics club for one year was analyzed and the educational effect was considered. First, the examination instrument for choosing the members of mathematics club was developed and used. And, diverse teaching and learning materials for improving creativity and mathematical ability of the members were used. Second, the difference of learning result between the experiment group and control one who joined the activities of mathematics club was analyzed. Finally, mathematical club activity based on mathematics history appeared to be effective in improving academic achievement and mathematics exploration activity.
