The purpose of the study were to analyze MathThematics textbooks and Korean middle school mathematics and to investigate the difference among the textbooks in the view of mathematical communication. According to the results, the textbook developers made a variety of efforts to develope students' mathematical communication ability. Students were encouraged to communicate with others about their mathematical ideas or problem solving processes in words or writing by means of discussion, oral report, presentation, journal, etc. MathThematics textbooks provided student self-assessment opportunity to improve student performance in problem solving, reasoning, and communication. In communication assessment, students can assess their use of mathematical vocabulary, notation, and symbols, the use of graphs, tables, models, diagrams and equation to solve problem and their presentation skills. The assessment activities would make a positive impact on the development of students' mathematical communication ability. MathThematics textbooks provided a variety of problem situation including history, science, sports, culture, art, and real world as a topic for communication, however, the researcher found that some of Korean textbooks depends heavily on mathematical problem situations.
Mathematics assessment doesn't mean examining in the traditional sense of written examination. Mathematics assessment has to give the various information of grade and development of students as well as teaching of teachers. To achieve this purpose of assessment, we have to search the methods of assessment. This paper is aimed to develop the open-ended problems that are the alternative to traditional test, apply them to classroom and analyze the result of assessment. 4-types open-ended problems are developed by criteria of development. It is open process problem, open result problem, problem posing problem, open decision problem. 6 grade elementary students who are picked in 2 schools participated in assessment using open-ended problems. Scoring depends on the fluency, flexibility, originality The result are as follows; The rate of fluency is 2.14, The rate of flexibility is 1.30, and The rate of originality is 0.11 Furthermore, the rate of originality is very low. Problem posing problem is the highest in the flexibility and open result problem is the highest in the flexibility. Between general mathematical problem solving ability and fluency, flexibility have the positive correlation. And Pearson correlational coefficient of between general mathematical problem solving ability and fluency is 0.437 and that of between general mathematical problem solving ability and flexibility is 0.573. So I conclude that open ended problems are useful and effective in mathematics assessment.
The purpose of this study was to analyze middle school students' problem posing types and strategies. we analyzed problems posed by 120 middle school students during mathematics class focused on problem posing activities in various aspects. Students' posed problems were classified into five types: not a problem(NP), non-math(NM), impossible(IM), insufficient(IN), sufficient(SU) and each of the posed problems. Students used three kinds of problem posing strategies such as goal manipulation(GM), assumption manipulation(AM), and condition manipulation(CM), and in posing one problem, one or more than two strategies were used. According to the prior studies, problem posing can contributes to the development of students' problem solving ability, creativity, mathematical aptitude, and a broader understanding of mathematical concepts. However, we found that some students had difficulties in posing problems or limited understandings of that. We hope the results of the study contribute to encouraging problem posing activities in mathematics instruction.
The primary purpose of the present study is to provide the sources to improve the mathematical problem solving performance by analyzing the effects of the belief systems and the misconceptions of the middle school students in solving the problems. To attain the purpose of this study, the reserch is designed to find out the belief systems of the middle school students in solving the mathematical problems, to analyze the effects of the belief systems and the attitude on the process of the problem solving, and to identify the misconceptions which are observed in the problem solving. The sample of 295 students (boys 145, girls 150) was drawn out of 9th grade students from three middle schools selected in the Kangdong district of Seoul. Three kinds of tests were administered in the present study: the tests to investigate (1) the belief systems, (2) the mathematical problem solving performance, and (3) the attitude in solving mathematical problems. The frequencies of each of the test items on belief systems and attitude, and the scores on the problem solving performance test were collected for statistical analyses. The protocals written by all subjects on the paper sheets to investigate the misconceptions were analyzed. The statistical analysis has been tabulated on the scale of 100. On the analysis of written protocals, misconception patterns has been identified. The conclusions drawn from the results obtained in the present study are as follows; First, the belief systems in solving problems is splited almost equally, 52.95% students with the belief vs 47.05% students with lack of the belief in their efforts to tackle the problems. Almost half of them lose their belief in solving the problems as soon as they given. Therefore, it is suggested that they should be motivated with the mathematical problems derived from the daily life which drew their interests, and the individual difference should be taken into account in teaching mathematical problem solving. Second. the students who readily approach the problems are full of confidence. About 56% students of all subjects told that they enjoyed them and studied hard, while about 26% students answered that they studied bard because of the importance of the mathematics. In total, 81.5% students built their confidence by studying hard. Meanwhile, the students who are poor in mathematics are lack of belief. Among are the students accounting for 59.4% who didn't remember how to solve the problems and 21.4% lost their interest in mathematics because of lack of belief. Consequently, the internal factor accounts for 80.8%. Thus, this suggests both of the cognitive and the affective objectives should be emphasized to help them build the belief on mathematical problem solving. Third, the effects of the belief systems in problem solving ability show that the students with high belief demonstrate higher ability despite the lack of the memory of the problem solving than the students who depend upon their memory. This suggests that we develop the mathematical problems which require the diverse problem solving strategies rather than depend upon the simple memory. Fourth, the analysis of the misconceptions shows that the students tend to depend upon the formula or technical computation rather than to approach the problems with efforts to fully understand them This tendency was generally observed in the processes of the problem solving. In conclusion, the students should be taught to clearly understand the mathematical concepts and the problems requiring the diverse strategies should be developed to improve the mathematical abilities.
Metacognition is defined to be 'thinking about thinking' and 'knowing what we know and what we don't know'. It was verified that the metacognitive abilities of high school students can be improved via instruction. The purpose of this article is to investigate a new method for activating the metacognitive abilities that play a key role in the Mathematical Problem Solving Process(MPSP). Hyunsung participated in the MPSP using Visual Basic Programming. He actively participated in the MPSP. There are sufficient evidences about activating the metacognitive abilities via the activity processes and interviews. In solving mathematical problems, he had basic metacognitive abilities in the stage of understanding mathematical problems; through the experiments, he further developed his metacognitive abilities and successfully transferred them to general mathematical problem solving.
During problem solving, "mathematical thought process" is a systematic sequence of thoughts triggered between logic and insight. The test questions are formulated into several areas of questioning-types which can reveal rather different result. The lower level questions are to investigate individual ability to solve multiple mathematical problems while using "mathematical thought." During problem solving, "mathematical thought process" is a systematic sequence of thoughts triggered between logic and insight. The scope of this case study is to present a desirable model in solving mathematical problems and to improve teaching methods for math teachers.
It is the aim of this paper to study the target problem solving process in reference to the base problem. We observed closely how students solve the target problem in reference to the base problem. The students couldn't solve the target problem, although they succeed to find the base problem. This comes from failing to discover the structural similarity between the target problem and the base problem. Especially it is important to cognize the proper corresponding of primary components between the base problem and target problem. And there is sometimes a part component of the target problem equivalent to the base problem and the target problem can't be solved without the insight into this fact. Consequently, finding the base problem fail to reach solving the target problem without the insight into their structural similarity. We have to make efforts to have an insight into the structural similarity between the target problem and the base problem to solve the target problem.
The mathematical thinking which transforms important mathematical content and developed into mathematical structure is a vital process in building up mathematical ability as mathematical knowledge based on structure. Such process based on students' recognition of mathematical concept. Developing mathematical thinking into mathematical structure happens when different cognitive units are connected and compressed to form schema of solution, which could happen through some guided problems. The effort of arithmetic approach in problem solving did not necessarily provide students the structure schema of solution. The using of equation to solve the problem is based on the schema of building equation, and is not necessary recognizing the structure of the solution, as the recognition of structure may be lost in the process of simplification of algebraic expressions, leaving only the final numeric answer of the problem.
In mathematical modeling tasks, where students are exposed to model-eliciting for real and open problems, students are supposed to formulate and use a variety of mathematical skills and tools at hand to achieve feasible and meaningful solutions using appropriate problem solving strategies. In contrast to problem solving activities in conventional math classes, math modeling tasks call for varieties of mathematical ability including mathematical creativity. Mathematical creativity encompasses complex and compound traits. Many researchers suggest the exhaustive list of criterions of mathematical creativity. With regard to the research considering the possibility of enhancing creativity via math modeling instruction, a quantitative scheme to scale and calibrate the creativity was investigated and the assessment of math modeling activity was suggested for practical purposes.

Previous studies indicated that students tended to hold less satisfactory beliefs about the discipline of mathematics, beliefs about themselves as learners of mathematics, and beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning. However, only a few studies had developed curricular interventions to change students' beliefs. This study aimed to examine the effect of a problem-solving curriculum (i.e., Mathematical Problem Solving for Everyone, MProSE) on Singaporean Grade 7 students' beliefs about mathematical problem solving (MPS). Four classes (n =142) were engaged in ten lessons with each comprising four stages: understand the problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan, and look back. Heuristics and metacognitive control were emphasized during students' problem solving activities. Results indicated that the MProSE curriculum enabled some students to develop more satisfactory beliefs about MPS. Further path analysis showed that students' attitudes towards the MProSE curriculum are important predictors for their beliefs.
