  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of maternal risk factors for adverse childhood experiences on children's emotional and physical abuse and neglect as well as parenting stress. Methods : This is a secondary data analysis study utilizing raw data from the 2017 National Survey of Child and Family Life Experiences. A total of 1,937 mothers with at least one adverse childhood experience were categorized into low-risk (1-3), moderate-risk (4-6), and high-risk (7 or more) groups to examine the differences in children's emotional and physical abuse and neglect and parenting stress and identify the influencing factors through regression analysis. Results : Maternal adverse childhood experiences were 50.4% in the low-risk group, 39.8% in the medium-risk group, and 9.7% in the high-risk group. Child emotional abuse was 45.0%, child physical abuse was 13.2%, child neglect was 3.5%, and parenting stress was 2.13 (±0.61) on average. Adverse childhood experiences were significantly more likely to be associated with emotional and physical abuse, neglect, and parenting stress in the medium- and high-risk groups than in the low-risk group. The regression analysis showed that the model explained 35% of child emotional abuse, 25% of child physical abuse, 19% of child neglect, and 16% of parenting stress. Conclusion : The higher the risk of adverse childhood experiences of parents, the more their children experience emotional abuse, physical abuse, child neglect, and parenting stress.

  • Background: Several previous studies have shown that commuting is a source of stress for undergraduate students. However, few studies have investigated the effect of commuting on academic stress among undergraduate students, and there has been little awareness of the environmental impact of commuting. Objectives: To evaluate the associations between commute type and/or time and academic stress among undergraduate students in South Korea, focusing on environmental sustainability. Methods: We conducted an online survey and obtained information on commute types, commute times, and academic stress from 510 undergraduate students aged ≥19 years. Academic stress was comprised of five sub-categories of stress, and total academic stress ranged from 5 to 25 points. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the associations between commute type and commute time and academic stress. Furthermore, the students were grouped into 21 categories based on their transportation mode for commuting. CO2 emission factors per each commuting category were calculated using the transportation type's CO2 emission data from previous studies. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to confirm the correlation between CO2 emission factors and total academic stress. Results: Students using home-to-school transportation without transfers (vs. walking) showed a significantly higher total academic stress of 2.19 points (95% CI: 0.58, 3.80). In contrast, students using school-to-home transportation without transfers (vs. walking) showed a significantly lower total academic stress of 1.96 points (95% CI: -3.55, -0.38). Moreover, students using transportation with lower CO2 emission factors had lower academic stress scores (home-to-school: correlation coefficient = 0.507, p<0.001; school-to-home: correlation coefficient = 0.491, p<0.001). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that both commute type and time are significantly associated with academic stress among South Korean undergraduate students. When students select environmentally-friendly transportation, they may not only improve their mental health but also improve climate resilience.

  • This study undertook an empirical analysis to examine the impact of various factors on entrepreneurial intention among young people, with a particular focus on the role of startup mentoring. Employing a survey distributed nationwide, data from 250 valid respondents were subjected to structural equation modeling to investigate these dynamics. The analysis uncovered that workplace stress, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control positively influence the entrepreneurial intentions of youth. Meanwhile, technological constraints negatively affected these intentions. The study did not explore the potential effects of future uncertainty and the burden of failure. Significantly, it was found that startup mentoring plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative impacts that may deter young individuals from pursuing entrepreneurship. Mentoring was instrumental in reducing negative influences, thereby fostering a more conducive environment for entrepreneurial ambition. By integrating the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) and Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) models, this research not only validates these frameworks within the context of youth entrepreneurship but also underscores the essential function of startup mentoring in enhancing entrepreneurial intentions. The insights from this study highlight the importance of mentoring programs in nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit among the youth, suggesting that targeted mentoring support can play a pivotal role in overcoming barriers to entrepreneurship.

  • This study empirically analyzed the effectiveness of government financial support policies for venture enterprises in the Daejeon region, using raw data obtained from the Small and Medium Venture Business Administration's survey results from 2016 to 2021. Daejeon, considering its economic significance, has a significant proportion of venture enterprises in its economy compared to the national average, with a focus on technological development. Conducting regression analysis yielded several key findings. Firstly, loan and guarantee support is effective for improving sales and market share, while R&D support is effective for technological development. Second, R&D and loan support have the most significant impact on sales in the fourth stage (maturity), while guarantee support is most influential in the third stage. Third, in industry analysis, the coefficients representing the effects of financial support were larger across all performance indicators compared to firm level data analysis. Based on these empirical analysis results, the study proposes several policy implications as follows. First, the government should actively provide funding support to venture companies rather than leaving investments to the capital market. Second, the methods and targets of funding support should vary according to the purpose of the support. Third, it is necessary to establish a platform that connects venture companies with private investors to commercialize developed technologies. Fourth, the funding support of venture capital for technology-intensive venture companies should be expanded.

  • Species distribution model (SDM) is used to preserve biodiversity and climate change impact. To evaluate biodiversity, various studies are being conducted to utilize and apply SDM. However, there is insufficient research to provide useful information by identifying the current status and recent trends of SDM research and discussing implications for future research. This study analyzed the trends and flow of academic papers, in the use of SDM, published in academic journals in South Korea and provides basic information that can be used for related research in the future. The current state and trends of SDM research were presented using philological methods and text-mining. The papers on SDM have been published 148 times between 1998 and 2023 with 115 (77.7%) papers published since 2015. MaxEnt model was the most widely used, and plant was the main target species. Most of the publications were related to species distribution and evaluation, and climate change. In text mining, the term 'Climate change' emerged as the most frequent keyword and most studies seem to consider biodiversity changes caused by climate change as a topic. In the future, the use of SDM requires several considerations such as selecting the models that are most suitable for various conditions, ensemble models, development of quantitative input variables, and improving the collection system of field survey data. Promoting these methods could help SDM serve as valuable scientific tools for addressing national policy issues like biodiversity conservation and climate change.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in smoking rates and smoking cessation plans before and after the cigarette price increases in 2015. Therefore, based on the National Health and Nutrition Survey, this study analyzes the correlation of the change in smoking rate and cessation plans with sociological variables (gender, age, income quintile, occupation, education level, hypertension, diabetes) and health behaviors (drinking, stress perception, obesity) in 2013 before the cigarette price increases and in 2015 and then in 2017. Results indicated that the smoking rate in 2013 was 23.3%, the smoking rate in 2015 was 20.5%, and the smoking rate in 2017 was 21.0%, indicating that the smoking rate decreased compared to before the cigarette price was raised. Among the sociological variables, the cigarette price increases showed a difference in the smoking rate of income, occupation, and education level, and health behavior was found to have no significant effect on smoking rate. In addition, the cigarette price increases showed a temporary effect on the increase in the smoking cessation plan, but the increase in the smoking cessation plan did not necessarily lead to decrease the smoking rate. Therefore, in the future, efforts will be needed at the national level to provide customized smoking cessation programs by gender, age, and social factors so that the smoking cessation plan can lead to decrease the smoking rate. In addition, Research on health behaviors that were not identifited in this study should also be conducted. We hope that this study will help the prediction of the impact of smoking rate in case the price increases policies are considered or implemented.

  • Recently, countries such as Japan and France are actively using three-dimensional development of land to secure available land. In Korea, too, the lack of available land within cities is a major problem, and in particular, the problem of decline due to disconnection due to division due to the railroad is emerging. As a solution to this, interest in three-dimensional development is increasing day by day, but the application or legal effectiveness of the concept is still lacking. Therefore, in this study, assuming that the Gyeongbu Line railway in Busan is underground, we attempted to apply the type of multi-dimensional development appropriate for each region to the land that would be created, and to predict how much it would contribute to urban competitiveness by arranging the necessary facilities for each part. To this end, we have developed an urban competitiveness index that can evaluate the layout of facilities by region, and since the range of the region is different from the existing evaluation indicator, it is judged that the three-dimensional development of the railway facility site can have a positive impact on the competitiveness of the city as a result of the prediction through a subjective survey.
