Infrared Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (IR-SNOM) Below the Diffraction Limit

  • Infrared Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (IR-SNOM) is an extremely powerful analytical instrument since it combines IR spectroscopy's high chemical specificity with SNOM's high spatial resolution. In order to do this in the infrared, specialty chalcogenide glass fibers were fabricated and their ends tapered to generate SNOM probes. The fiber tips were installed in a modified near field microscope and both inorganic and biological samples illuminated with the tunable output from a free-electron laser located at Vanderbilt University. Both topographical and IR spectral images were simultaneously recorded with a resolution of ${\sim}50\;nm$ and ${\sim}100\;nm$, respectively. Unique spectroscopic features were identified in all samples, with spectral images exhibiting resolutions of up to ${\lambda}/60$, or at least 30 times better than the diffraction limited lens-based microscopes. We believe that IR-SNOM can provide a very powerful insight into some of the most important bio-medical research topics.

중적외선 광 파라메트릭 발진기를 이용한 중적외선 분광기 성능 평가 (Performance Evaluation of Mid-IR Spectrometers by Using a Mid-IR Tunable Optical Parametric Oscillator)

  • 기존에 개발되었던 광 파라메트릭 발진기를 이용해 중적외선 분광기의 성능 평가 장치를 구축하였다. 사용된 중적외선 광 파라메트릭 발진기는 파장 1064 nm의 연속파 레이저로 펌핑되는 fan-out형 MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) 비선형 결정을 사용하여 파장가변 영역이$ 2.5{\sim}3.6{\mu}m$인 공중심 공진기 구조를 가지고 있다. 이 광 파라메트릭 발진기에 중적외선용 적분구 및 푸리에 변환 적외선 광 스펙트럼 분석기를 결합하여 중적외선 분광기 성능평가 장치를 구축하였다. 구축된 평가장치를 국내에서 개발한 중적외선용 분광기에 적용, 성능 평가를 진행함으로써 본 평가 장치를 분광기의 파장 분해능, 신호대잡음비, 분광 떠돌이광 등의 성능을 평가하는데 활용할 수 있음을 보였다.

  • Micromachining using the DPSS 3rd Harmonic Laser (355nm) has outstanding advantages as a UV source in comparison with Excimer lasers in various aspects such as maintenance cost, maskless machining, high repetition rate and so on. It also has the greater absorptivity of many materials in contrast to other IR sources. In this paper, the process for micro-drilling of blind hole in Cu/PI/Cu substrate with the DPSS UV laser and the scanning device is investigated by the experimental methods. It is known that there is a large gap between the ablation threshold of copper and that of PI. We use the Archimedes spiral path for the blind hole with different energy densities to ablate the different material. Finally, the blind via hole of diameter 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 50$\mu\textrm{m}$ was drilled.

In the laser welding, performing real-time monitoring system of the welding quality is very important in enhancing the efficiency of welding. In this study, the plasma and molten metal which are generated during laser welding were measured using the UV sensor and IR sensors. The results of laser welding were classified into five categories such as optimal heat input, little low heat input, low heat input, partial joining due to gap mismatch, and nozzle deviation. Also, a system was formulated which uses the measured signals with a fuzzy pattern recognition method which is used to perform real-time evaluation of the welding quality and the defects which can occur in laser welding.

In this study, the plasma and molten metal which are generated during laser welding were measured using the UV sensor and IR sensor. The results of laser welding were classified into five categories such as optimal heat input, little low heat input, low heat input, focus off, and nozzle change. Also, a system was formulated which uses the measured signals with a fuzzy pattern recognition method which is used to perform real-time evaluation of the welding quality and the defects which can occur in laser welding. Weld quality prediction program was developed using previous weld results and statistical program which could show the trend of weld quality and signal was developed.

UV레이저를 이용한 마이크로 히터 트리밍 (Micro Heater Trimming using UV Laser)

  • In this paper, a new method of laser trimming of thick film heater is studied. Various laser waves (IR, Green, UV) are used to ablation the heater and the process parameters are also presented. For given initial printed resisters, the cutting length should be prepared to obtain the target resister value in advance. Therefore, the cutting model is very important. The well-known model was tested and proven that it is valid only within a certain range of cutting length. A new model is proposed for a wide range of resister laser trimming. The cutting lengths and resister variation was obtained and formulated. To verify the presented method, the cutting lengths of each resister are calculated for various target resister value and laser trimming using UV is conducted.

Nd:YAG 레이저를 이용한 금속유물에 코팅된 아크릴수지의 제거 및 표면 특성 연구 (Experimental Study of Nd:YAG Laser Cleaning System for Removing Acrylic Resin and Surface Characteristic)

  • Laser cleaning have been found to be a useful cleaning tool to remove contaminants without inducing damage to the substrate and making secondary pollutant. In this study, the effect of Nd:YAG laser cleaning system, emitting at 1064 nm and 532 nm, on acrylic resin applied onto copper coupons and pieces of bronze was investigated. The samples after laser cleaning tests were examined using microscopy, FT-IR, SEM-EDS. As a result, the acrylic resin could be removed from most of the samples at low laser energy density. Laser wavelength 532 nm was more effective than 1064 nm because of using lower laser energy density, which could reduce heat damage to substrates. Although the acrylic resin was easily removed, it revealed melted surfaces and removed bronze patina which must remain. The problems should be solved by future studies using different laser system or laser wavelengths.

적외선 광학계통 성능평가를 위한 간섭계 개발 (Development of Interferometer for Performance Assessment of IR Optical System)

  • 적외선 광원으로 $CO_2$ 레이저를 사용하였고 광속을 2.5 cm의 직경으로 확대하여 Twyman-Green 간섭계를 구성하였다. 각종 렌즈는 Ge 렌즈로, 광속분리기는 ZnSe 평행판으로 택하였다. Pyro-electric vidicon camera에 의해 CRT monitor에 간섭무늬를 제시하며 image card에 의해 digitize되고 PC로 강도분포가 입력되어 data처리된다. 여기서, 적외선 간섭무늬는 thermal paper 상에 기록하였다. 가시영역에서는 He-Nefp이저를 광원으로 하고 CCD 카메라로 검출하여 CRT monitor에 제시하였다. 파면수차함수, PSF, OTF가 계산되어 3차원 그래프로 제시되며 프린트 된다.

Photophysical and Photochemical Property of ATX-S10

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment using laser and photosensitizing drug taken up to destroy cancer cells. Singlet oxygen ($^1$0$_2$) generation is strongly related to this treatment. We have built a direct detection system monitoring feeble luminescence, in the near IR region, from $^1$0$_2$, We have comparatively studied the photophysical and photochemical properties in solution of a newly developed drug ATX-S10 and Photofrin already investigated clinically. We demonstrdted that ATX-S10 was capable of efficiently yielding $^1$0$_2$, which may lead to highly efficient PDT treatment. Successive laser excitation photobleached ATX -S10 readily in a dose-dependent manner. This result shows that ATX -S10 is useful in setting up suitable medical treatment conditions to minimize side effects.
