  • For the reduction of electromagnetic biological effects from cellular phones, the electrical field radiation from cellular phone antenna is reduced by using partial ferrite material added on the phone case as ground plane. On the given properties (permittivity, permeability and conductivity) of ferrite material, the characteristics of monopole antenna is analysed depending on the variation of ferrite added configuration(thickness and shape). According to this analysis, the design method and direction to minimize the biological effects to human head is proposed in 1.7 GHz band PCS phones. For the exact analysis involving the permittivity, per-meability and conductivity of ferrite material, FDTD numerical method is used.

  • The stability condition and wideband characteristics of 3D ID-FDTD algorithm which has low dispersion error with isotropic dispersion are presented in this paper. 3D ID-FDTD method was proposed to improve the defect of the Yee FDTD such as the anisotropy and large dispersion error. The published paper calculated the stability condition of 3D ID-FDTD algorithm by using numerical method, however, it is thought that the examples were not sufficient to verify the stability condition. Thus, in this paper, various simulations are included in order to hold reliability under the conditions that the plane wave propagation is assumed with a single frequency and a wideband frequency. Also, the 3D ID-FDTD algorithm is compared to those that have the similar FDTD algorithm with ID-FDTD such as Forgy's method and non-standard FDTD method in a wideband. Finally, the radar cross section(RCS) for the large sphere with high dielectric constant is calculated.

  • In this paper, the higher order FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used to obtain the frequency response characteristics of the cylindrical metamaterial slab. FDTD method is one of strongest electromagnetic numerical method which is widely used to analyze the metamaterial structure because of its simplicity and the dispersive FDTD equation which has the dispersive effective dielectric constant and permeability are derived to analyze the metamaterials. This derived dispersive FDTD equation has no errors in analyzing the dielectric materials but there are some time and frequency errors in case of analyzing the metamaterials. We used the higher order FDTD method to obtain the accurate frequency response of the metamaterials. Comparisons between the dispersive FDTD method and the higher order FDTD method are performed in this paper also. From the results, we concluded that more accurate frequency response for various metamaterials applications can be obtained using the proposed method in this paper.

  • A two dimensional(2-D) finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method based on a novel finite difference scheme is developed to eliminate the numerical dispersion errors. In this paper, numerical dispersion and stability analysis of the new scheme are given, which show that the proposed method is nearly dispersionless, and stable for a larger time step than the standard FDTD method.

  • In this paper, we developed a numerical analysis model by using ADI-FDTD method to analyze three-dimensional interconnect structure. We discretized maxwell's curl equation by using ADI-FDTD. We introduced PML(Perfectly Matched Layer) absorbing boundary condition to solve the effect of the reflected wave at the interface. Evaluating the numerical model of PML and ADI-FDTD, we simulated the electric field distribution in time domain. We compare standard FDTD with ADI-FDTD, and analysis the result.

  • The Crank-Nicolson isotropic-dispersion finite difference time domain(CN ID-FDTD) scheme is proposed based on isotropic-dispersion finite difference(ID-FD) $equation^{[1],[2]}$. The dispersion relation of CN ID-FDTD is derived for lossy media by solving the eigenvalue problem of iteration matrix in spatial spectral domain, in addition, the weighting factors and scaling factors of the CN ID-FDTD scheme are presented for low dispersion error. The CN ID-FDTD scheme makes the dispersion error drastically reduced and shows accurate numerical results compared to the conventional Crank-Nicolson FDTD method.

  • The surface wave launcher from the dielectric coated coaxial cable to dielectric slab is investigated. FDTD method using local subcell and contour-path model is applied to determine the fine geometrical features. The reflection coefficient in coaxial cable region is found using extract algorithm. In this paper, two structures are presented as coaxial slot surface wave launcher. One structure has a vertical launching angle, and the other has an arbitrary launching angle. The numerical results show that a certain launching angle is minimized the reflection coefficient.

  • In this paper, updating schemes for the alternating-direction implicit finite-difference time-domain method(ADI-FDTD) are studied, which method has the potential to considerably reduce the number of time iterations especially in case where the fine spatial lattice relative to the wavelength is used to resolve fine geometrical features. In numerical simulations for microwave structure using ADI-FDTD, time marching scheme comprises of two sub-iterations. Two different updating equation sets for ADI-FDTD simulations are presented. In order to discuss the characteristics of those schemes especially in view of applying boundary conditions, we solved two complementary 2-D problems.

  • Scattering coefficients of randomly rough lossy dielectric surfaces were computed by using the FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method and the Monte Carlo method in this paper. The FDTD method was applied to compute electromagnetic wave scattering characteristics at any incident angles, any linear polarizations by dividing the computation region into the total-field region and the scattered-field region. The radar cross sections(RCS) of conducting cylinders have been computed and compared with theoretical results, measurement data and the results from the method of moment(MoM) to verify the FDTD algorithm. Then, to apply the algorithm to compute scattering coefficients of distributed targets, a two-dimensionally rough surface was generated numerically for given roughness characteristics. The far-zone scattered fields of 50 statistically independent dielectric rough surfaces were computed and the scattering coefficient of the surface was calculated from the scattered fields by using the Monte Carlo method. It was found that these scattering coefficients agree well with the SPM(Small Pertubation Method) model in its validity region.

  • In this paper, we developed a numerical analysis model by using ADI-FDTD method to analyze three-dimensional interconnect structure. We discretized maxwell's curl equation by using ADI-FDTD. Using ADI-FDTD method, a sampler circuit designed from 3.3 V CMOS technology is simplified to 3-metal line structure. Using this simplified structure, the time delay and signal distortion of complex interconnects are investigated. As results of simulation, 5∼10 ps of delay time and 0.1∼0.2 V of signal distortion are measured. As demonstrated in this paper, the full-wave analysis using ADI-FDTD exhibits a promise for accurate modeling of electromagnetic phenomena in high-speed VLSI interconnect.
