Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the protective factors that influence suicide probability in religious male high school students. Methods: The data was collected from Nov. 5 to Dec. 10, 2009. Data were collected by self-report questionnaire from 255 students selected from 2 religious male high schools in B city. The instruments for this study were the Suicide Probability Scale for Adolescence (SPS-A), Inventory Parents Peer Attachment-Revision (IPPA-R), Spiritual Well-being Scale (SWBS), and Ego-identity Scale. The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS 14.0 program. Results: The protective factors of suicide probability in religious male high school students were identified as existential spiritual well-being (${\beta}$= -.46, p<.001), self-identity (${\beta}$= -.30, p<.001), and mother attachment (${\beta}$= -.21, p<.001). These three factors explained 61.5% of the variance in suicide probability. Conclusions: The results suggest that improvement in spirituality, ego-identity, and mother attachment for religious male high school students is important to reduce the probability of suicide.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of spiritual well-being and meaning in life for adolescents with leukemia. Methods: Participants were 102 adolescents (11-21 years) recruited at C university hospital from June to August in 2014. The eligible participants were diagnosed with leukemia and are on follow-up care at the outpatient clinic. Participants were assessed for spiritual well-being, meaning in life, self-esteem, and social support. Results: Levels of spiritual well-being and meaning in life for these adolescents with leukemia were 3.69 out of 6 and 3.10 out of 4, respectively. Self-esteem and social support from family were factors affecting spiritual well-being. Self-esteem, existential well-being and social support from family and friends were predictive for meaning in life and accounted for 68% of total variance. Conclusion: The results show that there are several factors affecting spiritual well-being and meaning in life in adolescents with leukemia. Therefore, nursing intervention programs for adolescents with leukemia should include strengthening self-esteem and social support as well as considering the spiritual aspect of life in order to find meaning in life beyond leukemia.

This study aims to investigate how religious orientation of college students and the religious fundamentalism are related to their subjective well-being, and the interaction of religious orientations and the religious fundamentalism on their well-being. The participants were 374 college students who studies at an university located in Seoul, whose average of age were 22.54 (SD=4.79). The psychological tests used in this research included the following: I/E-R, the Religious Fundamentalism Scale, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Emotion Frequency Test, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Subjective Happiness Scale, Life Satisfaction Motivation Scale, and Life Satisfaction Expectancy Scale. Although religious students experienced more religious well-being than non-religious students, their subjective well-being were not higher than those of non-religious students. Results reveal that religious orientations were positively related to subjective well-being such as life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and positive emotions, as well as spiritual well-being. However, those covariance was approximately 4~6% only. Religious fundamentalism was also positively related to spiritual well-being and life satisfaction, it was negatively related to the motivation to live though. On the other hand, moderate effects of the religious fundamentalism on the relations of religious orientations to most of subjective well-being variables. Results of simple main effect analyses indicated that the students who were strongly oriented toward religion with higher religious fundamentalism showed significantly higher existential well-being, positive emotions, life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and especially their motivation and expectation for future life, whereas there were no significant differences in subjective well-being of students with lower religious fundamentalism by religious orientation. This finding suggests that some religiosity variables could affect human well-being with interactions
Purpose: All nurses should provide spiritual care for their clients. It is especially important to care spiritually for cancer patients facing the crisis of life. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of spirituality which is one of the basic concepts for spiritual care in cancer patients. Method: The subjects of this study were 8 cancer patients; 2 Christians,3 Buddhists, and 3 persons who did not have any religion. The data was collected and analyzed by Hybrid Model. Result: The results of this study were as follows: Dimensions of spirituality(vertical dimension connected with the absolute being, horizontal dimension related to others, existential dimension related to seeking of meaning), attributes of spirituality(dynamic process strengthened in suffering due to struggle with cancer, connectedness with the absolute being or will and belief in oneself, transcendence of reality, meaning and purpose of life, future oriented), outcomes of spirituality(intrinsic, behavioral). Conclusion: The spirituality of cancer patients is manifested differently by his(her) religion, age, past experiences and burden of family, and is able to be strengthened with cancer. Therefore, nurses should recognize that diagnosis and deterioration of cancer is not only a spiritual crisis but can be a good chance for spiritual growth, as well.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to assess spiritual health of HIV/AIDS patients and devise spiritual nursing mediation plans in practical nursing work by examining the levels of spiritual wellbeing (SWB) and spiritual needs of HIV/AIDS patients'. Methods: A correlation survey study was conducted on HIV/AIDS patients age ranging from 20 to 70 years to investigate the relationship between their SWB and spiritual needs. Results: 1. Average scores of HIV/AIDS patients' related to SWB were found to be higher than the intermediate level: 54.59 in SWB; more specifically, 27.78 in existential well-being and 26.80 in religious well-being. 2. Average score of for HIV/AIDS patients' spiritual needs was 108.67: More specifically, 37.80 in the needs of love and interest, 42.35 in the needs of seeking meanings and purposes, and 28.51 in the needs of wanting to be forgiven. 3. Concerning the correlation between SWB and spiritual needs, the total SWB and total spiritual needs of HIV/AIDS patients' showed a weak positive correlation (r=0.344, P=0.013). Conclusion: The result of the study showed that SWB and spiritual needs of HIV/AIDS patients' are higher than the average scores, and these two parameters have a weak positive correlation, indicating that HIV/AIDS patients have strong spiritual needs of seeking meanings and purposes. Therefore, more studies on the spiritual nursing mediation plans are needed in order to raise their spiritual well-being levels and meet their spiritual needs through precise assessment.
The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the mental health and spiritual wellbeing of the wives of pastors by analyzing the influence of both negative and positive elements of mental health (depression and psychological wellbeing) and spiritual wellness. The findings of conducted survey and the analysis of its result on the 236 subjects to measure their psychological wellbeing, depression, and spiritual wellbeing are as follows: First, the verified result of the differences between depression, psychological wellness, and spiritual wellness depending on the demographic variables revealed that the satisfaction level of ministry uniquely showed a 5% level of significance. Second, depression showed a negative correlation with spiritual wellbeing, and a positive correlation with psychological wellbeing, which proves that rather than depression, psychological wellbeing possesses a greater influence on spiritual wellness. Third, a one-level increase of depression and psychological wellbeing had an influence on spiritual wellbeing by - 0.282 and 0.668 respectively. Lastly, the study categorized the subjects into two groups -- those who are satisfied with their ministry and those who are not -- to analyze the influence of the sub-factors of depression and psychological wellbeing on the sub-factors of spiritual wellness. As a result, both groups showed that depression had significant influence only on the existential wellbeing, while psychological wellbeing had an influence on both religious and existential wellbeing, and rather than depression, a negative state of mental health, a psychological wellbeing which is a positive state of mental health had a greater influence. The study also revealed that depression and psychological wellbeing had a greater influence on the group that is dissatisfied with their ministry than the group that is satisfied.
Background: This study assessed the mental health, in order to determine the effect of the subject's spiritual well-being on anxiety depression and quality of life in active old people, and to verify whether or not spiritual well-being is a new factor for comprehensive health in old people. Materials and Methods: This study selected 184 old people aged over 65 years. The subject's spiritual well-being was assessed by the Korean Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWS) that was composed of the Religious Well-being Scale (RWS) and Existential Well-being Scale (EWS). The quality of life was assessed using Quality of Life Scale, which was composed of the subjective feeling about life and the subject's satisfaction of their whole life. Results: Among the psychosocial factors, the educational level and physical health, showed significant discriminative score in the SWS. A prior medical history was associated with a significantly low SWS score. Satisfaction with life was associated with a significantly high SWS score. These factors a showed significant discriminative EWS score rather than a RWS. Among the religion factors, the satisfaction with their religion showed significant difference in the SWS. The SWS score especially the EWS affected the anxiety and depression of the Korean Combined Anxiety and Depression Scale (CADS). The subjective feeling of life score was associated with a significantly EWS low score and the subject's satisfaction with their whole life score was associated with a significantly high EWS score. Conclusion: Spiritual well being has significantly effects on anxiety depression and the quality of life in active old age people, and the subject;s spiritual well-being might be a new factor for assessing health in old age.
Modern architecture's optical mechanism focused on Ocuularcentrism neglects the tactility of vision and tends to eliminate the optical and tactile dualism of traditional spaces by representing spaces and surfaces that are abstract and cold-hearted. In other words, all sensory experiences, except for visual experiences, are eliminated to make it impossible to create the substantial core of architecture that combines time, image, and surface textures. The fast-changing social trends, the emergence of new materials and technologies, and the corresponding development of various types of media since the Industrial Revolution have changed the paradigm of human perception and representation. With the development of media, other sensory experiences besides visual experience have been stressed and human perception has converted from single perspective to complex perspective. In result, new sensory items, such as visual tactility, have replaced the traditional vision-centered hierarchy. The composition of architectural surfaces has represented the functional and commercial needs of technology, structure, as well as the socio-cultural needs of the community. In contemporary times, it is being changed and developed by the new tactility and the corresponding expression of modern architecture. Based on the visual representation of tactility of architectural surface, this study used a composition of surface that combines various events, meanings, and senses to examine how architecture can mediate and reproduce viewers' visual experiences and discover the existential relationship between architecture and men.
Purpose: This study was conducted to test the effects of a spiritual care empowerment (SCE) program on the psychological empowerment for nursing students. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants were 80 nursing students (41 in the experimental and 39 in the control group) recruited from the D and S universities. The SCE program used in this study was developed based on the Zimmerman's Psychological Empowerment Model. The experimental group attended 9 sessions of a SCE program. Sessions were 90 minutes each, held twice per week for 5 weeks. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, and t-test using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Intrapersonal (self esteem and existential well-being), interactional (empathy), and behavioral (spiritual care competence) components were significantly improved in the experimental group after the intervention compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results show that the SCE program could be effective in improving the psychological empowerment of nursing students. Accordingly, the SCE program would be applied to the nursing curriculum that enhances students' psychological empowerment.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a deeper understanding of the experience of mothers caring for children with epilepsy. Methods: Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews and observation from 12 mothers of children with epilepsy. Data were collected from December, 2014 to February, 2015 and analyzed using van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological methodology to identify essential themes of their experience. Results: The essential themes that fit into the context of the 4-existential grounds of time, body, other people, and space were: Lived time-ongoing influence of the past, living in insecure present, fearful future with no answer; Lived body-bonded body, burned out state; Lived other-burden but also support, shrunken down; Lived space-narrowed range of activity, widened horizon. Conclusion: The findings in this study show in-depth understanding of the hardships of mothers who are caring for children with epilepsy. The beauty and greatness of these mothers are revealed through the analysis of various phenomenological materials such as literary and artistic work reflecting socio-cultural context, as well as vivid care experiences of mothers of children with epilepsy. This will be helpful in increasing understanding of the nature of caregivers' experience for medical professionals dealing with patients and caregivers. Also it helps to improve the understanding of the disease among the general public, followed by a more warming and caring attitude towards patients and family members. Finally, it will enhance psychological well-being and overall quality of life of the epileptic children and their families.
