The influences of the thickness and microstructure of Fe layer on the electrochemical performances of Fe/Si multilayer thin film anodes were investigated. The Fe/Si multilayer films were prepared by electron beam evaporation, in which Fe layer was deposited with/without simultaneous bombardment of Ar ion. The kinetics of Li insertion/extraction reactions in the early stage are slowed down with increasing the thickness of Fe layer, but such a slowdown seems to be negligible for thin Fe layers less than about $500{\AA}$. When the Fe layer was deposited with ion bombardment, even the $300{\AA}$ thick Fe layer significantly suppress Li diffusion through the Fe layer. This is attributed to the dense microstructure of Fe layer, induced by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). It appears that the Fe/Si multilayer films prepared with IBAD show good cyclability compared to the film deposited without IBAD.
We develop a new nonwoven composite separator for a safer lithium-ion battery, which is based on coating of silica ($SiO_2$) colloidal particles/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) binder to a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nonwoven support. The $SiO_2$ particles are interconnected by the SBR binder and closely packed in the nonwoven composite separator, which thus allows for the development of unusual porous structure, i.e. highly-connected interstitial voids formed between the $SiO_2$ particles. The PET nonwoven serves as a mechanical support that contributes to suppressing thermal shrinkage of the nonwoven composite separator. The $SiO_2$/SBR content in the nonwoven composite separators plays an important role in determining their separator properties. Porous structure, air permeability, and electrolyte wettability of the nonwoven composite separators, in comparison to a commercialized polyethylene (PE) separator, are elucidated as a function of the $SiO_2$/SBR content. Based on this understanding of the nonwoven composite separators, the effect of $SiO_2$/SBR content on the electrochemical performances such as self-discharge, discharge capacity, and discharge C-rate capability of cells assembled with the nonwoven composite separators is investigated.
The electrochemical and thermal stability of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.16}Al_{0.04}O_2$ were studied before and after $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ coating. Different to conventional coating material such as $ZrO_2$ or AlPO4, the coating layer was not detected clearly by TEM analysis, indicating that the $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticles effectively reacted with surface impurities such as $Li_2CO_3$. The coated sample showed similar capacity at a low C rate condition. However, the rate capability was significantly improved by the coating effect. It is associated with a decrease of impedance after coating because impedance can act as a major barrier for overall cell performances in high C rate cycling. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, exothermic peaks were shifted to high temperatures and heat generation was reduced after coating, indicating the thermal reaction between electrode and electrolyte was sucessfully suppressed by $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticle coating.
The effect of $LaF_3$ coating on the structural and electrochemical properties of $Li[Ni_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}]O_{2}$ cathodes was investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, and a cycler. The coating layer consisted of nano-sized particles attached nonuniformly to the surface of pristine powder. Despite the surface coating treatment, phase difference by $LaF_3$ coating was not detected. The discharge capacities of coated electrodes were a little lower than that of pristine sample at a 1 C rate. However, as the C rate increases, the capacity retention of the coated sample becomes obviously superior to that of the pristine sample. The cyclic performances of the electrodes in the voltage range of 4.8 $\sim$ 3.0 V were also improved by the surface coating. Such enhancement is attributed to the presence of the $LaF_3$ coating layer, which effectively suppressd the reaction between electrodes and electrolytes on the surface of the $Li[Ni_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}]O_{2}$ electrode.

The oxidation treatment of several carbon materials with a sodium chlorate and 70 wt.% of nitric acid, combined with heat treatment, were attempted to achieve an electrochemical active material with a larger capacitance. Among pitch, needle coke, calcinated needle coke and natural graphite, the structure of needle coke and calacinated needle coke were changed to the graphite oxide structure with the expansion of the inter-layer. On the other hand, the calcinated needle coke after oxidation and heating at $200^{\circ}C$ has exhibited largest capacitance per weight and volume of 29.5 F/g and 24.5 F/ml at the two-electrode system in the potential range of 0 to 2.5 V. The electrochemical performance of the calcinated needle coke was discussed with the phenomenon of the electric field activation and the formation of new pores between the expanded inter-layer at first charge.
In this research, applicability of electrochemical technology in removing nitrogenous compounds from solid waste landfill leachate was examined. Novel cathode material was developed at laboratory by introducing a Cu layer on Al substrate (Cu/Al). Al and mild steel (MS) anodes were investigated for the efficiency in removing nitrogenous compounds from actual leachate samples collected from two open dump sites. Al anode showed better performances due to the effect of better electrocoagulation at Al surface compared to that at MS anode surface. Efficiency studies were carried out at a current density of $20mA/cm^2$ and at reaction duration of 6 h. Efficiency of removing nitrate-N using Al anode and developed Cu/Al cathode was around 90%. However, for raw leachate, total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency was only around 30%. This is due to low ammonium-N removal as a result of low oxidation ability of Al. In addition to the removal of nitrogenous compounds, reactor showed about 30% removal of total organic carbon. Subsequently, raw leachate was diluted four times, to simulate pre-treated leachate. The diluted leachate was treated and around 88% removal of TN was achieved. Therefore, it can be said that the reactor would be good as a secondary or tertiary treatment step in a leachate treatment plant.

The lithium ion battery has applied to various fields of energy storage systems such as electric vehicle and potable electronic devices in terms of high energy density and long-life cycle. Despite of various research on the electrode and electrolyte materials, there is a lack of research for investigating of the binding materials to replace polymer based binder. In this study, we have investigated petroleum pitch/polymer composite with various ratios between petroleum pitch and polymer in order to optimize the electrochemical and physical performance of the lithium-ion battery based on petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder. The electrochemical and physical performances of the petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder based lithium-ion battery were evaluated by using a charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and universal testing machine (UTM). As a result, the petroleum pitch(MP-50)/polymer(PVDF) composite (5:5 wt % ratio) binder based lithium-ion battery showed 1.29 gf mm-1 of adhesion strength with 144 mAh g-1 of specific dis-charge capacity and 93.1 % of initial coulombic efficiency(ICE) value.
In this work, we prepared the carbons from synthesized styrene-acrylonitrile carbon precursor. The prepared carbons were chemically activated, and then the activated SAN-based carbons were named as A-SANs. The activations were carried out at different temperatures to investigate the effect of activation temperature on the surface and electrochemical properties of the activated SAN-based carbons for using as an electrode of electric double layer capacitors (EDLC). The characteristics of A-SAN were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface area and pore size analysis. Also, the electrochemical behaviors were observed by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge method. From the results, the A-SAN 700 showed excellent electrochemical property and the highest specific capacitance, but these properties decreased when the activation temperature was above $700^{\circ}C$. This is due to the fact that the activation at a temperature over $700^{\circ}C$ causes deformation of micropore structures.
In this work, we prepared the activated graphite nanofibers (A-GNFs) via chemical activation with KOH/GNFs ratios in a range of 0 to 5. The effect of KOH activation was studied in the surface and pore properties of the samples for electrochemical performance. The surface properties of A-GNFs were characterized by XRD and SEM measurements. The textural properties of the A-GNFs were investigated by $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation. Their electrochemical behaviors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge performance. From the results, electrochemical performances of the A-GNFs were improved with increasing the ratio of KOH reagent. It was found that specific surface area and total pore volume of the A-GNFs were increased by KOH activation.
Nanomaterial electrodes are used to improve the analytical performances of electrochemical measurements in biological and chemical field. Frequently used methods for fabricating metal nanostructures are solution processing and electrodeposition. In the solution process, it is possible to control the characteristics (e.g., direction) of metal growth by using capping agents, thereby fabricating nanoparticles of specific structures. In the electrodeposition, the electrode surface and the deposited metal atoms are in direct contact. Each process has its own limitation as well, and many studies are conducted to overcome such limitation. In this paper, we report an integration of the two fabrication methods and the characteristics, such as structural and electrochemical properties, of the fabricated electrodes. Lastly, we discuss the possibility of using the fabricated nanostructured electrode as a sensor.
