Air abrasion technology can prepare enamel and dentin for bonding, similar to etching by acidic gels and solutions. Longer treatment can excavate pit and fissures, preparing the tooth for immediate placement of bonded resin materials. Although not appropriate for every clinical situation, the air abrasive technology minimizes heat, vibration and bone-conducted noise associated with conventional means of caries removal since the cutting is accomplished by air pressure. Also, patients treated with the air-abrasion technology rarely request anesthesia. Air abrasion technology was more effective in treating early carious lesions and stains compared to lesions where caries had already progressed to produce soft dentin and the strong air stream and noise caused by the evacuation system was a major discomfort to pediatric patients, and the experience and skillfulness of clinician should be required for accurate and proper tooth preparation.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the general characteristics of students in dental technology departments; the correlations among their immersion in learning, class satisfaction, and academic achievement; factors influencing online learning experience; ways to improve students' class satisfaction; and basic data for designing effective online courses. Methods: A total of 300 questionnaires were produced and distributed to dental technology students from September 29 through October 8, 2020. The outcome was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 25.0. A significance level of α=0.05 was used for reliable verification. Results: Immersion in learning, class satisfaction, and academic achievement were relatively high among students who studied on a regular basis, and class satisfaction and academic achievement were relatively high among students who studied with almost no interruption. Concerning the correlations between academic achievement, immersion in learning, and class satisfaction in online learning, the correlation between academic achievement and class satisfaction was the highest at r=0.862. Class satisfaction was the largest factor that influenced academic achievement, and the higher students' immersion in learning and class satisfaction were, the higher their academic achievement was. Conclusion: The research is a case study that investigated the general characteristics of dental technology department students and the correlations among their immersion in learning, class satisfaction, and academic achievement. The study outcome could be used in determining factors that influence online learning and designing effective online courses that improve learner satisfaction.
Purpose: The objectives of this study is to collect the opinions of experts in the field of dental lab technology, and to present a plan for reforming the curriculum for producing clinical-based dental technicians. Methods: 71 experts were selected for this study. Experts were grouped into clinicians, educators, and policy-makers. First of all, the purpose and method of this study were explained to experts. After receiving the consent to participate in the research, their opinions were investigated. The survey was conducted through a questionnaire created based on their opinions and opinions collected. Results: The results showed that they were relatively satisfied with the curriculum. In addition, it was found that they hope to increase the proportion of mandatory education of digital dentistry and clinical practice. Emphasis was placed on expanding opportunities for on-the-job training as well as on time for hands-on training. As for admission capacity, the highest opinion was to keep it as it is, followed by the need for reduction. Conclusion: It seems necessary to minimize the difference between the curriculum and the clinical field in order to produce field-oriented dental technicians. To this end, it is necessary to reorganize the operation of field-oriented subjects and to increase the practice time to improve practical skills.
Purpose: The study aims to analyze differences in the satisfaction level of dental technology students regarding in-person and online classes. It also aims to provide fundamental resources for the improvement of major subject class methods that will improve students' self-directed learning abilities, thereby affecting their class satisfaction. Methods: In this study, a self-administered questionnaire was conducted from November 8 to November 30, 2021, for 256 dental technology students. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 21.0 statistical program. Frequency and percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, post-hoc test, correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis were performed to analyze the data. Results: In the self-directed learning abilities, the attitude of the learners was shown to have the highest positive (+) correlation in both in-person and online classes, with a statistically significant effect (p<0.001) on class satisfaction in major subject classes. Moreover, the explanatory power of the model was 52.2% and 39.7%, respectively. Conclusion: We concluded from the study that there is a need for professors to improve teaching methods to increase learners' self-directed learning competence, through problem-based learning, discussion learning, team-based collaborative learning, and mentor-mentee learning, thereby enabling learners to lead classes themselves.
Purpose: This study aimed to employ a Q-methodological approach that can understand the characteristics of each type according to the subjective structures of humans, to help understand type-specific characteristics and to provide a basis for creating the image of dental technicians among dental technology students based on the characteristics of each type. Methods: The Q-methodology was used for this study. 120 Q-statements were obtained from a qualitative survey of 120 students of the department of dental technology. To select the Q-sample, the Q-population was categorized by taking several repeated readings. The selected statements were reviewed and revised by experts and 33 Q-samples were finally selected. The data were then analyzed using the PQ method program. Results: Among 42 P specimens, 22 were classified into type 1, 9 types 2, and 11 types 3. "Type 1" recognizes the image of dental technicians positively and optimistically (Z=1.29) (Z=1.74), but it is named "self-development oriented" in the sense that steady self-development must be underpinned (Z=1.37). "Type 2" agreed strongly that they could work for a lifetime without age or gender discrimination (Z=2.09). This type was referred to as "professional-oriented" because the recognition of dental technicians is more focused on "professional." "Type 3" was tagged "pride-oriented," showing the strongest agreement that they can be proud of their job as healthcare workers (Z=1.08). Conclusion: Many studies on such an image should be carried out to determine the importance of occupational images and establish desirable status for dental technicians to continue developing.
Purpose: This study studied and investigated the oral health behavior of students in the Department of Dental Technology at D College at D City. Methods: A self-administrated survey was conducted by students currently enrolled at the Department of Dental Laboratory Technology at D College (June 4, 2015 ~ June 12, 2015), and 320 copies that were available for statistical processing were statistically analyzed by using the SPSS 19.0 Program. Results: Among the survey respondents, 91.6% had experience of dental treatment. The highest response regarding the frequency of tooth brushing appeared to be 'twice' with 44.7%. The responses regarding the time of tooth brushing appeared to be highest for 'before sleeping' with 65.3%, which was followed by 'after breakfast' with 60.6%. To the question asking which areas are brushed during tooth brushing, the response of 'teeth, gum, and tongue' appeared to be highest with 44.4%. Among the respondents, 64.7% experienced scaling, however, the experience rate for scaling appeared to increase in proportion with the increase of class year (p< .001). Regarding the subjective feel for the importance of oral health and necessity of tooth brushing, the scores appeared to be both 4.56. However, the score appeared to be 3.27 regarding one's subjective perception of one's own oral health condition. Regarding one's subjective oral health knowledge level depending on gender, female students showed a meaningfully lower rate (3.12 points) compared to male students (3.29 points) (p< .05), and depending on class, the knowledge level appeared to be meaningfully higher along with the increase in class year (p< .001). The experience of receiving oral health education appeared to be 78.4%, and 88.8% of the respondents responded that there is need for oral health education, however, the intent to participate in an oral health education program appeared to be 56.6%. Conclusion: As a result of the study, it could be concluded that oral health management behaviors and awareness of the students at the Department of Dental Technology at D University to prevent oral diseases were rather poor.
Objectives : Currently, it is being reported that new health technology (HT) is introduced and spread throughout Korea at a very fast rate. However, the current status of new HT related to dentistry has not been known or studied. Therefore, this study aims to understand the present state and awareness on dentistry-related domestic new HT via surveys and research, and thus apply this as a reference to construct an effective new HT-related system in the field of dentistry. Methods : The assessment status of New Health Technology Assessment (nHTA) committee was searched on the website for any updates on new HT5). The cases were searched in the range between Jan 1 2012 and Jul 31 2016 by submission date and were analyzed by year, division of technology, progress and major operating practitioner. Among those, technologies utilized by dentists were additionally analyzed. The survey result was obtained by combining responses of 25 participants from the workshop for new HT application and 11 members of Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (KAOMS). The workshop was co-hosted by KAOMS and Clinical Translational Research Center for Dental Science (CTRC) under Seoul National University Dental Hospital (SNUDH). Results : Most of the respondents to the survey have heard of new health technology but were unaware of the application procedure. 'Safety and effectiveness' was selected the most for things to consider when introducing new HT, followed by 'scientific evidence of the technology.' For new dental HT status, submissions between 2012 and Jul 31 2016 were analyzed by major operating practitioner, including cases where there are multiple practitioners. Yet, only 19 cases (17 %) of dentists were reported. Among 385 cases approved by nHTA, only 2 cases included dentists. Conclusions : Active publicity by the government on new HT and its application procedure, and continued interest and research in the dental and medical community is likely to be required for the development of dentistry.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to reduce the remake rate of dental prosthesis. We examined remake cause and major factor of dental prosthesis to determine methods for raising dental prosthesis satisfaction. Methods: Subjects included dental technicians in the metropolitan areas of the cities of Daegu and Gyeong-buk. Surveys were filled out by consenting dental technicians. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 19.0 for Windows. We determined frequencies and percentage, calculating means, and standard deviations, and determining statistical significance using t-tests, analysis of variance. Results: Impression or material transform is high among remake cause and margin is high among remake major factor. Crown class showed differences in General characteristics associated with age, number of employees, and number of connection dental. Porcelain class showed differences in General characteristics associated with age, number of employees, and number of connection dental. Denture class showed differences in General characteristics associated with age, monthly salaray, and career. Implant class showed differences in General characteristics associated with age, education, and career. Conclusion: In order to reduce remake rate of dental prosthesis, communication of dentist, dental technician, and the patient are require and correct information of patient and dental prosthesis are need.
Purpose: The purpose of this study aims to improve self-confidence, satisfaction and self fulfillment of dental technology students through practical skills competitions to meet the levels required by the industry. Method: The questionnaire was composed of 12 general characteristics, 23 self-efficacy, 25 practice satisfaction, 5 self-satisfaction, 12 self fulfillment out of 77 questions. The reliability of the surveys showed Cronbach' ${\alpha}=0.893$ on the self-efficacy, Cronbach' ${\alpha}=0.871$ on the practice satisfaction, Cronbach' ${\alpha}=0.857$ on self-satisfaction and Cronbach' ${\alpha}=0.941$ on self fulfillment. Results: Before and after the test result comparison showed a statistically significant difference for both men and women according to the general characteristics. Women's progress was higher than for men. The thought about dental technicians has changed for the better and showed a statistically significant difference. Subjects who have 3.1~3.5 school record showed the highest score on job skills, self-efficacy, practice satisfaction, self-satisfaction and self fulfillment according to the the general characteristics, and 3.6 ~ 4.0, 3.0 or less and 4.1 ~ 4.5 in order. Conclusion: This study was conducted with dental technology students who participated in practical skills competitions after 10 week 40 hours training in D college, and the results were as follows. Practical training improved the job performance, self-efficacy, practice satisfaction, self-satisfaction and self fulfillment improved significantly.
Purpose: This study aimed to verify whether blended learning is worth alternating with traditional face-to-face learning for some dental technology students in practice teaching. Methods: A total of 68 students were included in this study. They were divided into two groups to compare blended learning and traditional face-to-face learning. The experiment had been carried out over 15 weeks. The following tests were performed: test of instructional quality, test of learning satisfaction, test of perceived usefulness, and test of learning flow. The IBM SPSS software was used to analyze the data. Results: The learning satisfaction and the perceived useful of blended learning by students appeared to be higher than that of traditional face-to-face learning. However, there was no significant difference in the variables of traditional face-to-face learning and those of blended learning (p<0.05). Conclusion: Blended learning is an alternative to traditional face-to-face learning for some dental technology students in practice teaching.
