  • This study sought to provide an explanation of university students' concept understanding on the infinity and infinite process and utilized a psychological constructivist perspective to examine the differences in transitions that students make from static concept of limit to actualized infinity stage in context of problems. Open-ended questions were used to gather data that were used to develop an explanation concerning student understanding. 47 university students answered individually and were asked to solve 16 tasks developed by Petty(1996). Microgenetic method with two cases from the expert-novice perspective were used to develop and substantiate an explanation regarding students' transitions from static concept of limit to actualized infinity stage. The protocols were analyzed to document student conceptions. Cifarelli(1988)'s levels of reflective abstraction and Robert(1982) and Sierpinska(1985)'s three-stage concept development model of infinity and infinite process provided a framework for this explanation. Students who completed a transition to actualized infinity operated higher levels of reflective abstraction than students who was unable to complete such a transition. Developing this ability was found to be critical in achieving about understanding the concept of infinity and infinite process.

  • In this study, we have investigated the meaning and mechanism of the 'construction' in the operational constructivism and the social constructivism. According to Piaget, a mathematical concept is the operational sch me, which is constructed through the reflective abstraction from a general coordination of activities and operations. The process of the reflective abstraction consists of 'reflechissement'and 'reflexion'. The reflechissement starting from 'intriorisation' concludes with 'thematisation', and the reflexion consists in the 'equilibration' of the result of reflechissement. The 'construction' in the social constructivism includes two process. One is the process from the individual, subjective knowledge of mathematics to the social, objective knowledge of mathematics, and the other is vice versa. The emphases is placed on the 'social interaction' and the 'representation' in this two processes. In this context, if we want to apply the social constructivism, we should clarify the meaning of 'society', and consider the difference between the society of mathematicians and the society of students.

  • Mathematical modeling has been observed in the way of a possibility to contribute in improving students' problem solving abilities. One of the important views of real life problem context could be described such as a useful ways to interpret the real life leading to children's abstraction process. The problem contexts for the grade 6 with mathematical modeling perspectives were developed by reviewing the current 7th National Mathematics Curriculum of Korea. Those include the 5 content areas such as number & operation, geometry, measurement, probability & statistics, and pattern & problem solving. One of problem contexts, "Space", specially designed for pattern & problem solving area, was applied to the grade 6 students and analyzed in detail to understand student's mathematical modeling progress.

  • This study aims to design an integral instruction method that follows the Abstraction in Context (AiC) framework proposed by Hershkowitz, Schwarz, and Dreyfus to help students in acquiring in-depth understanding of the relationship between indefinite integrals and definite integrals and to analyze how the students' understanding improved as a result. To this end, we implemented lessons according to the integral instruction method designed for eight 11th grade students in a science high school. We recorded and analyzed data from graded student worksheets and transcripts of classroom recordings. Results show that students comprehend three knowledge elements regarding relationship between indefinite integral and definite integral: the instantaneous rate of change of accumulation function, the calculation of a definite integral through an indefinite integral, and The determination of indefinite integral by the accumulation function. The findings suggest that the AiC framework is useful for designing didactical activities for conceptual learning, and the accumulation function can serve as a basis for teaching the three knowledge elements regarding relationship between indefinite integral and definite integral.

  • Unlike a single value from a sensor device, a massive data set has characteristics for various processing aspects; input data may be formed in a different format, the size of input data varies, and the processing time of analyzing input data is not predictable. Therefore, context aware systems may contain complex modules, and these modules can be implemented and used in different ways. In order to solve these problems, we propose a method to handle context information from the result of analyzing massive data. The proposed method considers analysis work as a different type of abstracting context and suggests the way of representing context information. In experiment, we demonstrate how the context processing engine works properly in a couple of steps with healthcare services.

  • Recent robot software platform research focuses on providing intelligent service via abstraction of robot devices. Context-aware techniques are necessary for intelligent robot services, which are based on the perception of environmental information obtained from heterogeneous sensors in IoT environment. Robot Operating System (ROS) provides protocols to operate robot devices. ROS includes functions for abstracting heterogeneous sensors themselves in order to control the robot, however, it lacks the ability to provide context information that the robot can perceive based on environmental information through consistent collection methods. In this paper, we propose a relay system for ROS to provide context-aware robot service. The proposed system makes it possible for ROS to control and provide context-aware robot services with relay of an external context-aware system and ROS. In experiments, we demonstrate procedures that robot services abstracted from ROS and an external context-aware system works together based on the proposed system.

  • This study examines how open-ended tasks can be implemented with the support of redefined learning goals and teaching practices from a student-centered perspective. In order to apply open-ended tasks, learning goals should be adopted by individual student's cognitive levels in the classroom context rather than by designated goals from curriculum. Equitable opportunities to share children's mathematical ideas are also attainable through flexible management of lesson-time. Eventually, students can foster their meta-cognition in the process of abstraction of what they've learned through discussions facilitated by teachers. A pedagogical implication for professional development is that teachers need to improve additional teaching practices such as how to tailor tasks relevant to their classroom context and how to set norms for students to appreciate peer's mathematical ideas in the discussions.

  • In this paper we propose wear-UCAM, which is a toolkit for context-aware application model in wearable computing. As the rapid developments of mobile technologies and relevant technologies, the interests in wearable computer also become indispensible in both academic and industrial fields. However, there are few research activities on the application framework or toolkit for wearable computing. Hence, we suggest wear-UCAM as the development toolkit for wearable computing applications, where we focus on how to collect relevant user context, manage it, and provide services based on the recognized context. The proposed wear-UCAM includes the abstraction of context processing as well as independence among sensors and services with other components. For the sake of rapid prototyping of the proposed toolkit, we utilize PDA with wireless LAN as a wearable computer. The detail explanation of the implementation and its discussion are presented in this paper.

  • This study focused on the body modification in fashion illustration based on 'Corps sans Organes' of Deleuze. An argument about the changes of ideal body to define the aesthetic consciousness of times has lasted for a long time. Therefore, analyzing body modification in fashion illustration to express the ideal beauty could be effective motives to understand the changes of ideal bodies related with socio-cultural meanings, and be helpful to understand the overall trends of modern fashion illustration. To classify the types of body modification, the concept of 'Corps sans Organes' of Deleuze was used as an analyzing tool. As the final result, the characteristics of body modification could be divided into three groups; the fragmentation of bodies, the pastiche of bodies, and the abstraction of bodies. First, in the fragmentation of bodies, which is related with flexibility, pluralism, and subjective views on body, the bodies were separated as molecules. Second, the elements of pastiche of bodies could be subdivided into five sub-groups; sex, plants, animals, texts and figure, and machines. The pastiche of bodies was used to extend the limitation of human capabilities and to reinterpret the human identities. Last, the abstraction of bodies based on contingency, indeterminacy, and subjective associations could be related with the nomadic and indefinite body images. The body modification could be considered as the context of nomadism, indeterminacy, and virtuality of modern-times, and it would be the basic data to understand the body modification in fashion illustrations.
