  • This exploratory study focuses on analyzing three mathematics textbooks in Germany, Singapore and South Korea to reveal similarities and differences in their introductions of fraction concepts. Findings reveal that all three countries' textbooks introduce fraction concepts predominantly by using pictorial representations such as area models, but the introductions of multiple fraction constructs vary. The Singaporean and South Korean textbooks predominantly used a part-whole construct to introduce fractional concepts while the German textbook introduced various constructs sequentially in the first pages using several scenarios from different real-life situations. The findings were represented using visual representations, which we called textbook signatures. The textbook signatures provided configurations of the textbook features across the three countries. At the end of paper, we share insights and limitations about the use of textbook signatures in the research on textbook analysis.

  • This study aims to explore the direction of high school statistics education in Korea through a comparative analysis between the revised 2022 Korea mathematics curriculum and the IBDP Mathematics: Application & Interpretation Standard Level (IBDP AI SL) Curriculum and textbooks. The study seeks to investigate the Statistics unit of the two curricula, compare chapter structures and content elements of textbooks, and explore exercises on modeling and utilization of technology tools. The results are as follows: First, the IBDP AI SL statistics covered a broader range of topics. Second, exercises in Korean high school textbooks typically inquire about one or two questions in each topic, whereas the IBDP AI SL textbook's exercises present a real-life scenario on all relevant topics through sub-questions. Third, the Korean textbook guides the utilization of technology tools only in exercises presented after completing the entire chapter or where the calculation is complex. Also, there were only a handful of modeling exercises in the Korean textbook in contrast to most of the lessons and exercises were modeling exercises in the IBDP AI SL textbook. If these findings can be integrated into teaching practices in Korea, it will provide a direction for statistics education in Korean high schools.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide implications for improvement of mathematics textbook based on discursive approach to textbook analysis that complementarily combines a communicational approach to cognition and social semiotics. For this purpose, we reconstructed an analytic framework for discursive approach to written discourses of Korean textbook and CMP, and applied it to our analysis. Results show that several characteristics in meanings were developed by the use of words and visual mediators. First, in the case of ideational meaning, there were qualitative and quantitative differences between vocabularies used and between information addressed by visual mediators. Second, in the case of structural meaning, an offer and application of procedure was emphasized in a Korean textbook, whereas expectation and selection experiences of diverse possibilities for problem solving was underlined in CMP. In the case interpersonal meaning of student-author, imperative instructions were paid attentions in a Korean textbook. In contrast, students' interdependence and active participation were stressed in CMP. Therefore, this study addressed ideas about how to analyze mathematics textbooks based on integrated meanings developed by the use of words and visual mediators. In addition, it distributes implications for improvements of Korean mathematics textbooks through the analytic framework of both mathematical meanings and interpersonal meanings of student-author.

  • This study is to examine different views of teachers, students, parents and experts on existing mathematics textbook and ideas and alternatives for developing new textbooks. We interviewed deeply with 18 teachers, 18 students, 9 parents, and 4 experts and analyzed two analysis frame categories; Strengths and weaknesses of current textbooks and directions of mathematics textbooks that will be revised. We found that among teacher, student, parent and expert, there are some differences of meaning about mathematics textbooks, based on interview questions. The directions of new textbooks are as follows. First, 'the definitions of mathematics textbook concepts' shared and sympathized by teachers, students, parents, and experts should be considered in developing the textbooks. Second, the textbooks should be much usable in classrooms and be matched to the goals of mathematics subjects. Third, the contents and levels of difficulty of the textbooks should be based on the specific objectives and the analysis of curriculum and its contents. Fourth, understanding students should be presupposed as the external side of contents and the textbooks themselves should be associated with the image of joyful and fun mathematics. Fifth, the mathematics textbooks should reflect real daily life to their contents and be linked to other subjects.

  • In this study, we analyzed what STEAM-related subject contents, except mathematical knowledge, are contained in 2009 revised elementary mathematics 6th grade textbooks and teacher's manuals. The STEAM-related subject contents in the textbooks and the teacher's manuals were examined by unit, by semester, and by strand of the content in the elementary school mathematics curriculum. The results are the following: First, in each unit and in each strand of mathematics, the most frequent STEAM-related subject content is storytelling, followed by the STEAM-related subject contents of technology and engineering, natural science, and social studies in order. On the other hand, the number of culture, physical education, music and fine arts contents is very small. Second, the number of STEAM-related subject contents in the textbook for the second semester(textbook 6-2) of the 6th grade year is 61 more than that in the textbook for the first semester(textbook 6-1). The number of non-storytelling STEAM-related subject contents in textbook 6-2 is 107, 2.7 times more than that in textbook 6-1. Third, the teacher's manual for textbook 6-1 is insufficient in complementing the textbook units which lack in STEAM-related subject contents, while the teacher's manual for textbook 6-2 is comparatively good in its complementing role. Therefore, it is recommended that we develop different STEAM materials for our 6th grade mathematics classes.

  • As the informal graph was introduced newly in the area of function in middle school mathematics curriculum revised in 2015, ten publishing company became to have a concern on how to represent the graph content uniquely and newly. At this time, it may be meaningful and useful to compare and analyze the content of the graph unit shown on each textbook published by publishing companies. To accomplish this, on fundamentally the basis of diverse prior researches this study tried to select the elements of expression and interpretation of the graph and establish an analytic frameworks of expression and interpretation of the graph respectively. This study executed the frequency analysis and cross analysis by textbook system, textbook, and the number of the graph drawn on a coordinate plane on the representation and interpretation of the graph. As a result, the textbook contains more items on interpretation than the representation of the graph, and students showed a learning effect on the graph unit but showed a neutral response to the impact of learning. This basic and essential paper shed light on developing the practical and more creative textbook which has diversity and characteristic respectively, while adjusting the scope of the elements of the graph's representations and interpretations and providing proper level and quality content.

  • One of major goals of mathematics education is to cultivate human resources which equip creative problem-solving ability. Thus, the enhancement of creative and converging ideas has been emphasized in the national curriculum since the 2009 revised curriculum. In the current study, we analyzed authorized textbook series to examine how each curriculum material addresses the creativity convergence competency. The foci of the analysis were creativity (originality, fluency, flexibility, elaboration) and convergence (intrinsic connection, extrinsic connection). In addition, we analyzed the national textbook which was based on the 2015 revised curriculum to investigate the transition between the national textbook and the authorized textbooks. We found the tasks that focused on fluency were the most frequent type regarding creativity and the tasks that connected with everyday life situations (extrinsic connection) were prevalent across the three textbook series. We provided suggestions about the development of mathematics textbooks and their implementation.
